Report: Wizards re-signing Anthony Gill
Thu, Jul 25, 2024, 7:06 AM
Tim Bontemps on Twitter
According to a report from ESPN's Tim Bontemps, Washington is re-signing after four seasons with the team.
Analysis: Gill averaged 3.8 points and 1.9 rebounds per game last season and isn't likely to play a significant role in 2024-25 given the Wizards' influx of young talent.

Carlton Carrington grabs 15 rebounds vs. Bucks
Sat, Jul 20, 2024, 11:47 AM
Carlton Carrington finished Saturday's 91-79 win over Milwaukee with 13 points (5-of-14 FGs, 2-of-2 FTs), 15 rebounds, five assists, two steals, and one 3-pointer in 35 minutes.
Analysis: Despite Saturday's game being Washington's of summer league, the Wizards had their first-round pick shoulder a full workload. Bub played 35 of a possible 40 minutes and was highly active on the boards, grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds while accumulating 13 points and five assists. Washington added Malcolm Brogdon via the Deni Avdija trade, and he should serve as a quality mentor to Carrington as he gets used to the NBA game. While he will not be an elite fantasy option immediately, Washington being in rebuild mode makes Carrington one of the more attractive rookies in fantasy basketball.

Carlton Carrington finishes with 9/5/3/1/2 line
Thu, Jul 18, 2024, 3:20 PM
Carlton Carrington struggled with his shot on Thursday and contributed nine points (2-of-10 FGs), five rebounds, three assists, one steal, two blocks and two triples against the Kings.
Analysis: Bub hasn't shot the ball well this summer, but this was the first game that he really struggled. He has been a consistent contributor of assists so far, but he finished with less than five dimes for the first time this summer in this game. Carrington is going to get the chance to work through mistakes during his rookie season, even if his shot isn't falling. That may not play well for managers that are trying to be competitive in the field goal percentage category, but he should put up some fun numbers during his rookie year.

Kyshawn George stuffs stat sheet in win over Kings
Thu, Jul 18, 2024, 3:16 PM
Kyshawn George posted a full line on Thursday with 11 points (2-of-7 FGs), two rebounds, two assists, one steal, two blocks and one triple against the Kings.
Analysis: George's strongest skill entering the draft was his 3-point shooting, and he has been an effective deep-range threat thus far this summer. He only added one 3-pointer in this game, and he is now averaging 1.8 triples through four games. He was able to contribute three “stocks” in this game, which was encouraging to see. He should see plenty of minutes as a rookie on a tanking team, but it's unlikely that he contributes much in fantasy in year one, especially in category leagues.

Alex Sarr turns in 2/9/3/1/2 line vs. Kings
Thu, Jul 18, 2024, 3:11 PM
Alex Sarr struggled with his shot once again on Thursday and finished with two points (1-of-6 FGs), nine rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block in a 71-69 win over Sacramento.
Analysis: After shooting 0-of-15 in their last game, Sarr was at least able to knock down a shot in this one. However, it only ended up being one make. While the scoring production hasn't been there for Sarr often this summer, he has been able to contribute in other ways. He was drafted as a long-term project on offense that could make an impact defensively immediately, which has been the case this summer. He has plenty of upside to contribute in fantasy as a rookie, but he needs to start shooting the ball more efficiently for that to happen.

Alexandre Sarr scores eight points vs. Rockets
Sun, Jul 14, 2024, 2:31 PM
Alexandre Sarr shot 4-of-14 from the field in Sunday's loss to Houston, scoring eight points with four rebounds, two assists, and two blocked shots in 29 minutes.
Analysis: Sunday's matchup wasn't the easiest for Sarr, especially after the Rockets inserted veteran center Orlando Robinson into the lineup. The rookie missed all five of his 3-point attempts and did not attempt a free throw; his physicality will need to improve, but that should happen as Sarr adds muscle to his lithe frame. If anything, Sarr's play shows why the Wizards signed Jonas Valanciunas in free agency. The veteran's presence will help the rookie acclimate to the NBA without having too much responsibility immediately thrown his way.

Kyshawn George hits three triples, scores 14 PTS
Sun, Jul 14, 2024, 2:27 PM
Kyshawn George shot 5-of-6 from the field and 1-of-3 from the foul line in Sunday's loss to the Rockets, amassing 14 points, three rebounds, one assist, one steal, one block, and three 3-pointers in 25 minutes.
Analysis: George's perimeter shooting ability was one of the reasons why his name was called during the first round of last month's draft. That attribute was displayed on Sunday afternoon, with the rookie shooting 3-of-4 from deep and 5-of-6 from the field overall. George does need to become more consistent as a defender, but the shooting ability is there. And in Washington, he'll have opportunities to play because the franchise is in rebuilding mode.

Carlton Carrington tallies 18 points, five assists
Sun, Jul 14, 2024, 2:21 PM
Carlton Carrington finished Sunday's 109-91 loss to the Rockets with 18 points (5-of-16 FGs, 4-of-6 FTs), four rebounds, five assists, and four 3-pointers in 34 minutes.
Analysis: Carrington is a smooth point guard with range well beyond the 3-point line, and those skills were on display on Sunday. Unfortunately, the struggles finishing around the basket were as well. Bub shot 1-of-6 from two on the day, and that's where he'll need to make his most significant strides as a pro. The opportunity to learn from Malcolm Brogdon will help Carrington as he develops into potentially being Washington's point guard of the future.
Saddiq Bey
Saddiq Bey agrees to three-year deal with Wizards
Wed, Jul 10, 2024, 3:30 PM
Adrian Wojnarowski on X
Saddiq Bey has agreed to a three-year, $20 million deal with the Wizards, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Analysis: Atlanta didn't make Bey a restricted free agent, which means that they won't have a chance to match this offer. Bey will likely miss a lot of time to start next season, but he should be a solid depth forward once he's back in the rotation. However, it's difficult to imagine him providing much fantasy value without being in a starting role.
Landry Shamet
Woj: WAS declining Landry Shamet's player option
Sat, Jul 6, 2024, 8:14 AM
Adrian Wojnarowski on Twitter
According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Wizards are declining Shamet's $11 million option ahead of the 2024-25 season.
Analysis: Shamet didn't shoot the ball well from deep with the Wizards but is a career 38.4% three-point shooter and provided plenty of spark when Washington needed him to play a larger role. Long-range shooting is his best attribute, but he's only averaged more than 10.0 points per game once in his seven-year career.
Tristan Vukcevic
Wizards sign Tristan Vukcevic to two-way contract
Wed, Jul 3, 2024, 6:58 AM
Michael Scotto on X
Washington has signed Tristan Vukcevic to a two-way contract.
Analysis: Vukcevic will be back with the Wizards after closing out last season with them. He may spend a lot of time to start the year in the G-League, with Jonas Valanciunas, Richaun Holmes and Marvin Bagley filling most of the center minutes. He has a ton of upside, and he is worth stashing in dynasty formats.
Jonas Valanciunas
Jonas Valanciunas inks 3-year deal with Wizards
Sun, Jun 30, 2024, 2:55 PM
Adrian Wojnarowski on Twitter
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Jonas Valanciunas has agreed to a three-year, $30 million deal with the Wizards.
Analysis: It's a bit of a surprising move for both sides as Valanciunas opts to sign with a rebuilding team, and Washington adds another center to a frontcourt that includes Richaun Holmes and Marvin Bagley III and just drafted Alex Sarr with the No. 2 pick in the draft. Valanciunas' minutes were cut in his last season with New Orleans, and his production suffered because of it. It's unclear what kind of role he'll have in Washington, but all of the abovementioned players likely get a ding in fantasy value. New Orleans lost Larry Nance Jr. to the Hawks in the Dejounte Murray trade, so the Pelicans may be forced to give big minutes to rookie center Yves Missi right away.
Richaun Holmes
Shams: Richaun Holmes signing extesnion with WAS
Sat, Jun 29, 2024, 1:10 PM
According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, Wizards big man Richaun Holmes is signing a two-year, $25.9 million extension.
Analysis: Holmes declined a one-year, $12.9 million player option before agreeing to his extension. It's unclear how large his role will be, though, as Alexandre Sarr and Marvin Bagley are set to be in the mix as well from the start of 2024-25.

Kyshawn George selected by NYK, dealt to WAS
Wed, Jun 26, 2024, 9:46 PM
Shams Charania on Twitter
Kyshawn George was selected with the No. 24 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft and subsequently traded to Washington in exchange for picks 26 and 51.
Analysis: A native of Switzerland, George played one season at Miami (FL) before deciding to forego his remaining college eligibility and turn pro. Listed at 6-foot-7, 209 pounds, the 20-year-old wing didn't offer much above-the-rim athleticism, but he was an efficient scorer in catch-and-shoot situations. The percentages from three (40.8% on 4.2 attempts per game) and the foul line (77.8%) suggest that George can develop into an effective shooter at the NBA level. And while he wasn't a disruptive defender, the former Hurricane was rarely out of position within the team's scheme. George may not project to be an elite 3-and-D wing, but he has the potential to be an effective contributor. The putrid Wizards could use all the help they can get, particularly at forward. George may see some meaningful run in his first NBA season.

Washington adds Carlton Carrington with 14th pick
Wed, Jun 26, 2024, 8:34 PM
Washington has selected Carlton Carrington with the No. 14 pick in the draft.
Analysis: The 6-foot-3 3/4 guard from Baltimore played very well during his lone season at Pitt, earning ACC All-Rookie Team honors. In 33 games, Carrington averaged 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 0.6 steals, and 2.0 3-pointers, shooting 41.2% from the field and 78.5% from the foul line. While the field-goal percentage suggests some inefficiency on the part of Carrington, he finished the season with a relatively low turnover percentage (13.0) and a respectable offensive rating of 111.5. A little over half of his shot attempts were from beyond the arc, and Carrington struggled finishing around the basket. He didn't test well athletically at the combine, but the ability to both run an offense and hit perimeter shots is why “Bub” was expected to land in the first round. Washington traded for this pick earlier in the day in the deal that sent Deni Avdija for Portland. Bub will get to learn from Malcolm Brogdon in year one and play alongside Jordan Poole in the backcourt. This is an excellent landing spot for him to make some noise in year one.

Wizards add Alexandre Sarr with No. 2 pick
Wed, Jun 26, 2024, 7:19 PM
The Washington Wizards have selected Alexandre Sarr with the No. 2 pick in the draft.
Analysis: The 7'1” center from France has been widely touted as one of the top prospects in this draft class, but that isn't because of what he provided statistically. In 30 games for Perth (NBL) this past season, he averaged just 9.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 18.0 minutes per game. Those numbers don't jump off the page, but his athleticism on film certainly does. Not only did he showcase the ability to lock down the paint and block shots, but he was also able to switch onto perimeter players and still be effective, which is a vital skill in today's NBA. When Perth matched up against the G League Ignite in September, Sarr had 26 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks while facing off against multiple other top prospects. He has the makings of an elite defender that can also have success as the roll man on offense, and he has also showcased upside as a shooter. Washington has cleared the way for Sarr in his rookie season by trading away Deni Avdija ahead of the draft. Sarr should play a ton of minutes during his rookie season and should be in the conversation for Rookie of the Year.
Malcolm Brogdon
Woj: WAS to acquire Malcolm Brogdon, draft picks
Wed, Jun 26, 2024, 5:54 PM
Adrian Wojnarowski on Twitter
According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Wizards plan to acquire Malcolm Brogdon, the 14th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, a future 2029 first-round pick, and 2028 and 2030 second-round picks from the Trail Blazers in exchange for Deni Avdija.
Analysis: Traded to Portland as part of the Jrue Holiday deal, Brogdon's career timeline did not appear to mesh with that of the Trail Blazers, who are rebuilding. That didn't prevent the team from holding onto him last season, but he is now moving to another rebuilding team. If Brogdon stays in D.C. and the Wizards lose Tyus Jones in free agency, he would undoubtedly have fantasy relevance. However, Washington could also move Brogdon to a contender in exchange for additional draft capital. The Wizards' decision to trade Avdija also frees up further opportunities for Bilal Coulibaly, the team's lottery pick last summer.

Woj: Wizards to hire Brian Keefe as head coach
Wed, May 29, 2024, 11:21 AM
Adrian Wojnarowski on Twitter
According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Wizards will remove coach Brian Keefe's interim tag.
Analysis: This was the expected outcome, with Keefe taking over the head coach duties after Wes Unseld Jr. was relieved of his position in late January. The Wizards went 8-31 under Keefe, finishing the season with an overall record of 15-67. While Washington led the NBA in pace, they were a bottom-five team in offensive and defensive rating. Keefe will have his work cut out for him in the nation's capital, with Kyle Kuzma, Jordan Poole, and Bilal Coulibaly being names for fantasy managers to be mindful of this offseason.
Jared Butler
Jared Butler drops career-best 22 points in loss
Sun, Apr 14, 2024, 9:34 AM
Jared Butler accumulated 22 points, two rebounds, seven assists, a steal, a block and a pair of triples across 31 minutes in Sunday's loss to Boston.
Analysis: Butler finished his third NBA season with averages of 6.3 points, 1.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists across 14.1 minutes in 40 appearances. It wasn't a phenomenal season from a statistical standpoint, but Butler's strong play down the stretch earned him a three-year deal with Washington. He averaged 9.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.2 steals across 22.7 minutes over the final 16 games of the season, and the 22 points are a new career high.
Eugene Omoruyi
Eugene Omoruyi scores career-high 26 points
Sun, Apr 14, 2024, 9:32 AM
Eugene Omoruyi finished Sunday's loss to Boston with 26 points, two rebounds, five assists and four three-pointers.
Analysis: Omoruyi averaged just 8.8 minutes per game across 42 appearances before Sunday's eruption, and he topped out at 16 points on February 4. The third-year man out of Oregon nearly matched his season high in the first half with 15 points, and he cruised past it through the final two quarters of the game. Omoruyi's 23 minutes were second-fewest on the team, though he finished second in shot attempts and came away with an efficient 11-of-17 mark from the field. The 26 points are a new career-high for Omoruyi, who finished behind only former Ducks teammate Payton Pritchard (38) for game-high in the scoring department.
