Yohendrick Pinango
Yohendrick Pinango Belts first big-league homer
Sat, May 16, 2026, 5:32 PM
Pinango went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 2-1 extra-inning win over the Tigers.
Analysis: The rookie outfielder took Kyle Finnegan deep in the seventh inning to get the Blue Jays on the board, and give Pinango his first career homer in the majors. He's seeing regular playing time against right-handed pitching with Addison Barger (elbow) back on the IL, and through his first 15 games with Toronto he's slashing .364/.404/.477 with two doubles, three runs and seven RBI.
Louis Varland
Louis Varland Nabs win in extras
Sat, May 16, 2026, 5:28 PM
Varland (2-1) picked up the win in Saturday's 2-1 extra-inning victory over the Tigers, allowing two hits and striking out two over two scoreless innings.
Analysis: Entering a tie game in the ninth inning, Varland gave up a couple singles but prevented Detroit from walking it off, then the right-hander remained on the mound after Toronto pushed across a run in the top of the 10th. Varland has reeled off nine straight appearances without giving up an earned run, and on the season he sports a dazzling 0.38 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 34:9 K:BB over 23.2 innings while converting all five of his save chances since taking over as the Jays' closer.
Spencer Miles
Spencer Miles Strong showing in bulk relief
Sat, May 16, 2026, 5:22 PM
Miles didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 2-1 extra-inning win over the Tigers, allowing two hits and two walks over 3.2 scoreless innings of relief. He struck out five.
Analysis: Entering the game as the bulk reliever following opener Mason Fluharty, Miles fired an efficient 56 pitches (36 strikes) in his longest outing in the majors so far. The rookie Rule 5 pick set a new career high in strikeouts as well, as the Blue Jays continue to stretch him out to fill a hole in their rotation. Miles will take a 2.55 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 23:7 K:BB through 24.2 innings into his next outing, which lines up to be a tough test on the road next week in Yankee Stadium.
Jose Berrios
Jose Berrios Slated for surgery
Sat, May 16, 2026, 10:53 AM
Berrios will undergo surgery to repair his right elbow Wednesday, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports.
Analysis: The primary focus of the procedure will be to repair the stress fracture in his elbow, though there is also concern about possible ligament damage. More will be known regarding his return timeline following the procedure, though ligament repair would likely rule him out for the remainder of the season.
Ernie Clement
Ernie Clement Resting Saturday
Sat, May 16, 2026, 9:52 AM
Clement isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Tigers.
Analysis: Clement went 0-for-2 with a walk and a run during Friday's series opener, and he'll now step out of the lineup to give Lenyn Sosa a start at the keystone Saturday.
Brandon Valenzuela
Brandon Valenzuela Idle Saturday
Sat, May 16, 2026, 9:49 AM
Valenzuela isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Tigers.
Analysis: Valenzuela will get a chance to rest Saturday after going 1-for-2 with a walk during Friday's series opener. Tyler Heineman will pick up a start behind the plate in Valenzuela's stead and bat ninth.
Trey Yesavage
Trey Yesavage Quality start in no-decision Friday
Sat, May 16, 2026, 9:10 AM
Yesavage didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Tigers, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out six.
Analysis: The 22-year-old right-hander delivered his first quality start of the season on 88 pitches (54 strikes) while racking up 19 swinging strikes. Yesavage has looked sharp since his belated season debut due to a shoulder impingement, and over four starts and 19.1 innings he sports a 1.40 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 21:8 K:BB. He faces a tough test in his next outing, which is set to come on the road next week in Yankee Stadium.
Spencer Miles
Spencer Miles Slated for bulk relief Saturday
Sat, May 16, 2026, 8:29 AM
Miles is expected to pitch in bulk relief behind opening pitcher Mason Fluharty during Saturday's game in Detroit, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Toronto has a spot available in its rotation until the team gets one of its injured starters back from the shelf, and Miles looks to be the choice to fill the opening for the time being. When the fifth spot in the rotation last came up Sunday against the Angels, Miles made his first MLB start but was deployed as more of an opener in front of southpaw Eric Lauer, who covered five innings out of the bullpen. With Lauer having since been designated for assignment, Miles will be on tap to cover the bulk of the innings for Toronto while Fluharty likely work the first inning or two as an opener. Expect Miles to build on his workload from last Sunday, when he tossed 38 pitches over three shutout innings.
Mason Fluharty
Mason Fluharty Draws opening assignment
Fri, May 15, 2026, 9:08 PM
Fluharty will open Saturday's game against the Tigers, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Fluharty has already worked as an opener once this season, though it resulted in him allowing one run on two hits and a walk against the White Sox on April 4. Now sporting a 5.40 ERA and 1.40 WHIP through 15 innings on the season, the Jays will trust him to handle the first inning of Saturday's contest before sending in Spencer Miles for bulk-relief duties.
Nathan Lukes
Nathan Lukes Will begin rehab assignment Monday
Fri, May 15, 2026, 3:20 PM
Lukes (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment with the rookie-level Florida Complex League on Monday, Ben Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.careports.
Analysis: Lukes has been sidelined since April 24 with a left hamstring strain, but he's been running the bases and will do so again this weekend before heading out on his rehab stint. Yohendrick Pinango has been seeing extensive playing time in the Toronto outfield with both Lukes and Addison Barger (elbow) missing action.
Jose Berrios
Jose Berrios Could require elbow surgery
Fri, May 15, 2026, 3:15 PM
Manager John Schneider said Friday that "surgery is on the table" for Berrios (elbow), Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: Berrios was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his pitching elbow ahead of the start of the regular season and suffered a setback 10 days ago following his fourth rehab start. It sounds like the veteran could need some sort of procedure, which would obviously knock him out even longer after Berrios had been ramping up to join the Blue Jays' pitching staff this month.
Daulton Varsho
Daulton Varsho Blasts walk-off grand slam
Thu, May 14, 2026, 6:44 AM
Varsho went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Wednesday's 5-3 win over Tampa Bay.
Analysis: After the Rays scored twice to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the 10th inning, Varsho came up with the bases loaded with one out in the bottom half of the frame and launched an opposite-field grand slam off a two-strike pitch from Aaron Brooks, sending Toronto home with a win. It's the fifth homer of the year for Varsho, who's gone 7-for-21 (.333) with an .840 OPS in his last five games. Overall, he's slashing .250/.321/.403 with 13 RBI, 19 runs scored and three steals across 159 plate appearances this season.
Dylan Cease
Dylan Cease Sharp again in no-decision
Wed, May 13, 2026, 10:33 PM
Cease did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Rays, allowing a run on three hits and three walks over seven innings. He struck out nine.
Analysis: While Toronto failed to take the lead until the 10th inning, leaving Cease with a no-decision, it was another excellent outing from the right-hander, who's now gone seven innings in each of his last three starts. Cease's ERA is down to 2.41 across nine starts (52.1 innings) with a 1.18 WHIP and 75 strikeouts, good for second-most in the majors. He'll look to keep rolling his next time out, tentatively lined up for next week on the road against the Yankees.
Brandon Valenzuela
Brandon Valenzuela Resting up Wednesday
Wed, May 13, 2026, 2:53 PM
Valenzuela is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays.
Analysis: Valenzuela will be getting a routine day off for the series finale after he had started in both of the Blue Jays' previous two contests. Tyler Heineman will handle catching duties for Toronto on Wednesday.
Andres Gimenez
Andres Gimenez Out of Tuesday's lineup
Tue, May 12, 2026, 4:53 PM
Gimenez is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rays.
Analysis: Gimenez will occasionally sit versus left-handed starting pitchers, and that'll be the case Tuesday with Tampa Bay sending out southpaw Shane McClanahan. Ernie Clement is getting the nod at shortstop in Gimenez's place, opening up the keystone for Lenyn Sosa.
Jake Bloss
Jake Bloss Kicks off rehab assignment
Tue, May 12, 2026, 1:05 PM
Bloss (elbow) struck out four over 2.1 scoreless innings Tuesday in his first rehab start with the Blue Jays' Florida Complex League affiliate, Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: It's the first game action for Bloss since he underwent UCL surgery last May. Acquired from the Astros in the Yusei Kikuchi trade in July 2024, Bloss will continue to be brought along slowly as he ramps things back up. The right-hander could become an option for the Toronto rotation sometime around midseason.
Andres Gimenez
Andres Gimenez Goes deep twice in defeat
Tue, May 12, 2026, 2:39 AM
Gimenez went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and five RBI in a loss to the Rays on Monday.
Analysis: Gimenez produced all five of Toronto's runs Monday, stroking a three-run homer in the second inning and a two-run shot in the seventh. The pair of long balls ended a 21-game homerless stretch for the veteran infielder, who produced a meager .511 OPS during that power drought. Gimenez has five homers through 38 games this season, and he hasn't reached double-digit long balls in a campaign since 2023, when he swatted 15 home runs over 153 regular-season contests with Cleveland.
Kevin Gausman
Kevin Gausman Lit up early by Rays
Tue, May 12, 2026, 2:28 AM
Gausman (2-3) allowed seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits and no walks while striking out five batters over 4.2 innings in a loss to Tampa Bay on Monday.
Analysis: Gausman got off to a poor start, allowing three runs on four hits in the first inning. He yielded another pair of runs in the second and had tossed 100 pitches by the time he exited with one out in the fifth frame. Gausman had completed at least five frames in all eight of his starts coming into Monday, and the six earned runs he allowed against the Rays marked a season high. As a result of the outing, the veteran hurler's ERA jumped from 3.09 to 3.86. He'll look to bounce back in his next start, which is slated to be a road tilt in Detroit.
Nathan Lukes
Nathan Lukes Nearing rehab assignment
Mon, May 11, 2026, 3:44 PM
Lukes (hamstring) is scheduled to resume running the bases before the end of this week, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: Lukes has been ramping up his running progression and could be cleared for a rehab assignment at Single-A Dunedin later this week. He's been sidelined since late April with a left hamstring strain.
Max Scherzer
Max Scherzer Thumb issue resurfaces
Mon, May 11, 2026, 3:40 PM
Scherzer (forearm) will receive a cortisone injection after experiencing a recurrence of right thumb discomfort, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: Scherzer battled a nagging thumb issue last season and the injury has reared its ugly head again. The 41-year-old hurler had already been in the midst of a shutdown period after being administered a cortisone shot in his right forearm last Thursday. Scherzer has been shelved since late April, and his absence could be further extended following a second injection.
