Max Scherzer
Max Scherzer Stumbles in sixth loss
Wed, Aug 19, 2026, 9:44 PM
Scherzer (1-6) took the loss against the Rays on Wednesday, allowing seven runs on five hits and three walks in four innings. He struck out one.
Analysis: Jesus Sanchez misplayed a ball in left field that was popped up by Richie Palacios, which helped plate a pair of runs in the fourth inning, but it was still a discouraging outing by Scherzer. The seven runs allowed tied a season worst for the 42-year-old right-hander, who had pitched at least five innings while yielding three runs or fewer in his prior three starts. Scherzer will take a career-worst 7.40 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 32:20 K:BB across 45 innings into his next scheduled start at home against the Royals.
Brett Bateman
Brett Bateman Pulled with hamstring tightness
Wed, Aug 19, 2026, 7:35 PM
Bateman was removed from Wednesday's game against the Rays due to right hamstring tightness.
Analysis: Bateman went 0-for-2 before his hamstring forced him out of the game in the fifth inning. The severity of his injury remains unknown, but Myles Straw could be in line to start in center field if Bateman needs to miss any amount of time.
Spencer Arrighetti
Spencer Arrighetti Option to start Friday
Wed, Aug 19, 2026, 3:38 PM
Arrighetti (foot) could be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Friday's game against the Yankees, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: Arrighetti threw 3.2 innings and 50 pitches in a rehab start with Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday, so if he does come back Friday he would be facing workload limitations. The right-hander is dealing with Morton's neuroma in his right foot, and the expectation is that he will have to pitch through some discomfort down the stretch for the Blue Jays.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Targeting return Saturday
Wed, Aug 19, 2026, 3:35 PM
Guerrero (concussion) will go through a full workout Wednesday and is targeting a return to the Blue Jays' active roster Saturday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet reports.
Analysis: Guerrero landed on the 7-day concussion injured list last weekend but is on track for activation when first eligible. He went through a light workout Tuesday and will ramp up the intensity with a full workout Wednesday. Guerrero could play a rehab game with Single-A Dunedin on Thursday or Friday before returning Saturday, assuming all checks out well.
Ernie Clement
Ernie Clement Taking seat Wednesday due to illness
Wed, Aug 19, 2026, 2:56 PM
Clement is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Rays due to an illness, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: Clement picked up three hits in Tuesday's win over the Rays but then woke up Wednesday feeling under the weather. The Blue Jays will give Clement a day off as a result, paving the way for Josh Smith to start at second base. Consider Clement day-to-day.
George Springer
George Springer Exiting starting nine
Wed, Aug 19, 2026, 2:53 PM
Springer is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Rays.
Analysis: Springer is coming off his second three-hit game of the season, but he will begin Wednesday's festivities on the bench. Alejandro Kirk will fill the designated hitter spot for the Blue Jays, and Brandon Valenzuela will grab a start at catcher.
Promoted to big leagues
Wed, Aug 19, 2026, 2:18 PM
The Blue Jays selected Cellucci's contract from Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday.
Analysis: The 28-year-old left-hander was a 12th-round pick in 2019 by the Red Sox but was released by Boston last season. After spending time in independent ball and the Puerto Rican winter league, Cellucci signed with Toronto earlier this year. Across 40 games out of the bullpen at Double-A and Triple-A, he's posted a 3.55 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 48:22 K:BB spanning 45.2 innings.
Matt Waldron
Matt Waldron DFA'd by Toronto
Wed, Aug 19, 2026, 2:12 PM
The Blue Jays designated Waldron for assignment Wednesday.
Analysis: Waldron has been jettisoned from the 26-man and 40-man rosters for Brendan Cellucci, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move. Waldron was claimed off waivers from the Padres on Aug. 5 and pitched in four games out of the Toronto bullpen, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts across 4.1 frames.
Jose Soriano
Jose Soriano Collects 10th win of 2026
Tue, Aug 18, 2026, 9:13 PM
Soriano (10-6) picked up the win against the Rays on Tuesday, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out two across 5.2 innings. He did not issue a walk.
Analysis: The nine hits Soriano gave up Tuesday were his most of the season. However, the damage was limited to three runs thanks to double plays that the Blue Jays turned in both the third and fifth innings, the former of which came when the Rays had the bases loaded. Through three starts with Toronto, Soriano has a 2.76 ERA and 1.35 WHIP over 16.1 innings, and his next start is line up for this weekend on the road against the Yankees.
Josh Smith
Josh Smith Goes long against Tampa Bay
Tue, Aug 18, 2026, 8:59 PM
Smith went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer during the Blue Jays' 10-5 win over the Rays on Tuesday.
Analysis: Smith got the Blue Jays to double-digit runs with a two-run homer in the seventh inning. He hit just one home run over 45 appearances for Texas before being traded to Toronto, where he has two long balls over 13 games with his new team while going 6-for-25 (.240).
Kazuma Okamoto
Kazuma Okamoto Makes franchise history Tuesday
Tue, Aug 18, 2026, 8:55 PM
Okamoto went 1-for-5 with a solo homer during the Blue Jays' 10-5 win over the Rays on Tuesday.
Analysis: Okamoto extended the Blue Jays' lead to 7-3 with a solo homer off Steven Matz in the fifth inning. It was the 25th long ball of the season for Okamoto, setting the Blue Jays' rookie home run record. He's provided a much-needed boost to Toronto's offense this season, especially with Addison Barger (elbow) missing most of the year and Vladimir Guerrero's (concussion) power struggles. Okamoto has a .731 OPS with one steal, 72 RBI and 43 extra-base hits across 498 plate appearances.
Alejandro Kirk
Alejandro Kirk Strong night at Tropicana Field
Tue, Aug 18, 2026, 8:49 PM
Kirk went 3-for-6 with a double, a home run, three RBI and an additional run scored during the Blue Jays' 10-5 win over the Rays on Tuesday.
Analysis: Kirk extended his hitting streak to seven games with a double in the first inning. He proceeded to extend the Blue Jays' lead to 4-0 with a two-run homer in the third -- his sixth long ball of the year -- before driving in another run in the fourth, en route to setting a season high in RBI. Through 15 games in August, Kirk has gone 20-for-51 (.392) with three home runs and 13 RBI.
Trey Yesavage
Trey Yesavage Resumes throwing
Tue, Aug 18, 2026, 4:50 PM
Yesavage (knee) resumed throwing from flat ground Tuesday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: It's a positive step in Yesavage's recovery from a meniscus injury that he underwent surgery for last week. There's a chance that the 23-year-old returns toward the tail end of the 2026 season, though that will ultimately depend on how he responds to an increased workload as he progresses in his rehab program. Yesavage posted a 5-5 record across 18 starts prior to his recent knee injury, boasting a 3.65 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 91:46 K:BB over 93.2 innings.
Jameson Taillon
Jameson Taillon Resumes throwing program
Tue, Aug 18, 2026, 3:15 PM
Taillon (forearm) resumed a throwing program with some flat-ground work Tuesday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: Taillon just landed on the 15-day injured list one week ago with right forearm tendinitis, so it's a good sign that he's already feeling well enough to throw. He has a chance to be back at the end of August when first eligible, though Taillon's role once reinstated looks uncertain.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Participating in on-field workout
Tue, Aug 18, 2026, 2:58 PM
Guerrero (concussion) participated in a light on-field workout Tuesday that included activation drills, jogging and higher-intensity running, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: It's unclear where exactly Guerrero stands in his recovery from a concussion, but the workout Tuesday is an indication that he's making at least some progress. The 27-year-old landed on the 7-day injured list Saturday and will be eligible to return this weekend versus the Yankees, though it's unclear if he's expected to be fully cleared by that time.
Lenyn Sosa
Lenyn Sosa Activated and outrighted
Tue, Aug 18, 2026, 2:37 PM
The Blue Jays activated Sosa (wrist) from the 60-day injured list Tuesday and outrighted him to Triple-A Buffalo.
Analysis: Sosa no longer possesses a spot on the Blue Jays' 40-man roster, but he'll remain in the organization at Buffalo. The 26-year-old infielder last played for the Blue Jays in late May, as he's been working his way back from a right wrist contusion.
Lazaro Estrada
Lazaro Estrada Sent outright to Triple-A
Mon, Aug 17, 2026, 1:10 PM
The Blue Jays outrighted Estrada to Triple-A Buffalo on Monday.
Analysis: He's no longer on the 40-man roster, but Estrada will remain in the organization after passing through waivers. The 27-year-old righty holds a 6.64 ERA and 19:11 K:BB across 20.1 frames in parts of two seasons for Toronto.
Andres Gimenez
Andres Gimenez Keeps running in August
Mon, Aug 17, 2026, 11:32 AM
Gimenez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in Sunday's loss to the Yankees.
Analysis: The steal was Gimenez's 17th of the season, and five of them have come in August -- a month in which he's produced a .296/.361/.407 slash line with one homer, eight runs and eight RBI in 16 contests. The veteran infielder is still batting in the lower part of the order, but if he stays hot he could get some looks in a more fantasy-friendly spot as the Jays search for offense while Vladimir Guerrero (concussion) is on the shelf.
Spencer Arrighetti
Spencer Arrighetti Will need at least one more rehab start
Mon, Aug 17, 2026, 11:26 AM
Arrighetti (foot) threw 3.2 innings for Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk. He struck out three.
Analysis: The right-hander built up to 50 pitches (35 strikes) and blanked Worcester for three frames before serving up a two-run homer to Mikey Romero in the fourth. Arrighetti doesn't seem quite ready to make his Blue Jays debut, however. Per Keegan Matheson of MLB.com, Arrighetti's fastball averaged just 90.5 mph, well down from the 92.4 mph he averaged this season in the majors with Houston, and he'll likely need to build up his workload a little further before being entrusted with even a bulk relief role. If he hits the organization's goals on those fronts in his next rehab start, however, he could be activated from the IL before the end of the month.
Charles McAdoo
Charles McAdoo Filling in for Guerrero at first base
Sun, Aug 16, 2026, 10:56 AM
McAdoo will start at first base and bat second in Sunday's game against the Yankees.
Analysis: McAdoo will remain in the lineup for the sixth time in seven games, covering first base for the second day in a row after splitting time between third base and left field in his prior four starts. With the Blue Jays placing Vladimir Guerrero (concussion) on the 7-day injured list Saturday, McAdoo could have an extended runway at first base, though Kazuma Okamoto could also move across the diamond to help fill in. Since being recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Monday, McAdoo has gone 5-for-16 with a home run, a double, three walks and four RBI.
