Dylan Cease
Dylan Cease Falters late in loss
Mon, Apr 27, 2026, 10:11 PM
Cease (1-1) took the loss against Boston on Monday, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five batters over 5.2 innings.
Analysis: Cease got through three scoreless frames before things unraveled for him. He gave up a run in the fourth, two more in fifth and another in the sixth before being pulled. The veteran righty induced a decent 13 whiffs, but his five punchouts were his fewest in a start so far this season. Cease still ranks second in MLB with 49 punchouts and has a 2.87 ERA through 31.1 innings, so the beginning of his Toronto tenure has been successful overall. His next start is projected to be a road tilt in Minnesota.
Eric Lauer
Eric Lauer Could get another shot in rotation
Mon, Apr 27, 2026, 4:00 PM
Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Monday that Lauer is an option to start Wednesday's game versus the Red Sox in placed of the injured Max Scherzer (forearm/ankle), Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: The Blue Jays announced over the weekend that Lauer would shift to the bullpen to accommodate the return of Trey Yesavage (shoulder). Lauer appears poised for a reprieve as he slides into Scherzer's spot, though it could be short-lived with Jose Berrios (elbow) nearing a return. The left-handed Lauer owns a 6.75 ERA and 1.54 WHIP alongside a 19:12 K:BB across 22.2 innings this season.
George Springer
George Springer Will not need rehab assignment
Mon, Apr 27, 2026, 3:51 PM
Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Monday that Springer (toe) is nearing a return and will not require a rehab assignment, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Springer ran the bases and hit on the field Monday at Rogers Centre and will do the same thing Tuesday. As long as he comes out of that workout with no setbacks, his activation from the 10-day injured list will be imminent. Springer has been sidelined for the last two-plus weeks with a fractured left big toe.
Andres Gimenez
Andres Gimenez 'Banged up,' but available Monday
Mon, Apr 27, 2026, 3:42 PM
Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Gimenez is "banged up," but the infielder will be available off the bench for Monday's game against the Red Sox, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: Gimenez is out of the lineup for the second straight game, and though Schneider didn't offer any specifics on what's ailing the 27-year-old, the issue appears to be a minor concern. The Blue Jays are facing a left-handed starting pitcher (Ranger Suarez) on Monday, which may have factored into the decision to hold the left-handed-hitting Gimenez out of the lineup. Ernie Clement will slide over from his usual spot at second base to cover shortstop in Gimenez's stead.
Daulton Varsho
Daulton Varsho Idle against southpaw
Mon, Apr 27, 2026, 3:21 PM
Varsho is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Red Sox.
Analysis: The left-handed-hitting Varsho doesn't always sit against left-handed pitching, but he'll hit the bench for the series opener while the Red Sox send southpaw Ranger Suarez to the bump. Myles Straw will fill in for Varsho in center field and will bat leadoff.
Andres Gimenez
Andres Gimenez Remaining on bench Monday
Mon, Apr 27, 2026, 3:19 PM
Gimenez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Red Sox.
Analysis: The Blue Jays opted to rest Gimenez for Sunday's game against the Guardians and right-hander Slade Cecconi, but the infielder's absence from the lineup Monday appears to be more matchup-related with southpaw Ranger Suarez taking the hill for Boston. The left-handed-hitting Gimenez owns a modest 89 wRC+ for his career versus same-handed pitching and is slashing .182/.250/.182 in 25 plate appearances against them this season.
George Springer
George Springer Runs bases Monday
Mon, Apr 27, 2026, 2:12 PM
Springer (toe) ran the bases at Rogers Centre on Monday, Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: It's likely to be the final step before Springer returns to game action. The bigger question is whether those initial games will come as part of a rehab assignment, or whether the Blue Jays will have Springer skip a rehab stint and immediately stick him back onto the active roster. Springer has been shelved for the last two-plus weeks with a fractured left big toe.
Chase Lee
Chase Lee Receives first call-up of 2026
Mon, Apr 27, 2026, 1:43 PM
The Blue Jays recalled Lee from Triple-A Buffalo on Monday.
Analysis: Lee will join the Blue Jays for the first time this season after failing to win a spot in the Toronto bullpen coming out of spring training. Over nine appearances at Triple-A this season, the right-hander permitted just two earned runs over 13.2 innings, though he dealt with plenty of traffic on the bases (11 hits, nine walks).
Max Scherzer
Max Scherzer Hits shelf with pair of injuries
Mon, Apr 27, 2026, 1:40 PM
The Blue Jays placed Scherzer on the 15-day injured list Monday due to right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation.
Analysis: Scherzer's move to the IL comes three days after he was lit up for seven runs in just 2.1 innings in a loss to the Guardians, which brought his ERA up to 9.64 over five starts on the season. Toronto had been listing Scherzer as its starter for Wednesday's game in Boston, but with the team opting to shelve the veteran rigth-hander, a spot in the rotation could be reopened for lefty Eric Lauer, who was recently moved to the bullpen. Scherzer will be eligible for activation May 10, but the Blue Jays haven't indicated whether he'll be ready to return at this time. For his part, Scherzer doesn't believe he's in line for a long-term absence, as he told Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca that he expects to take the next 5-to-7 days to rest up and heal before resuming a regular throwing program.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Three more hits Sunday
Mon, Apr 27, 2026, 10:09 AM
Guerrero went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI in Sunday's win over the Guardians.
Analysis: It's the third three-hit performance in the last seven games for Guerrero, although only three of his 11 knocks during that span (two doubles and a homer) have gone for extra bases. The first baseman isn't supplying his usual power yet this season with just two home runs and 14 RBI in 27 contests, but his .340 batting average is second in the American League behind Yordan Alvarez's .358 mark, and Guerrero's .426 OBP is third behind Alvarez and Ben Rice.
Jesus Sanchez
Jesus Sanchez Homers, drives in three
Mon, Apr 27, 2026, 7:00 AM
Sanchez went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly in Sunday's 4-2 victory over the Guardians.
Analysis: After driving in a run with a sac fly in the first inning, Sanchez put the Jays ahead for good in the sixth inning with his two-run shot off Slade Cecconi, his fourth long ball this year. Sanchez has been swinging the bat well of late, logging at least one hit in four of his last five games -- he's gone 4-for-13 (.308) with a pair of homers in that span. The 28-year-old outfielder is batting .266 with a .771 OPS and 15 RBI through 26 games this season.
Patrick Corbin
Patrick Corbin Goes 4.2 innings Sunday
Sun, Apr 26, 2026, 8:14 PM
Corbin did not factor into the decision Sunday against the Guardians, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out four.
Analysis: Corbin was solid early, holding Cleveland scoreless through four innings, but he'd run into trouble in the fifth, where he'd allow four hits before he was pulled with two outs in the frame. Since stepping into Toronto's injury-plagued rotation, Corbin's posted a 3.72 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP and 16:6 K:BB across four outings (19.1 innings). He's tentatively lined up to face the Twins on the road in his next outing.
Yohendrick Pinango
Yohendrick Pinango Singles in debut
Sun, Apr 26, 2026, 8:08 PM
Pinango went 1-for-2 in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Guardians.
Analysis: After flying out in his first at-bat, Pinango laced a two-out single off Slade Cecconi in the fourth inning for his first big-league hit. Myles Straw would later pinch hit for PInango in the sixth inning against lefty Tim Herrin. The 23-year-old Pinango got off to a nice start with Triple-A Buffalo this year, slashing .288/.370/.488 with three homers in his first 22 games. He should see regular at-bats against right-handed pitching while Addison Barger (ankle) and Nathan Lukes (hamstring) are sidelined.
Louis Varland
Louis Varland Notches third save
Sun, Apr 26, 2026, 7:48 PM
Varland earned the save in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Guardians, allowing one hit while striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning.
Analysis: Varland gave up a leadoff single to Chase DeLauter to start the ninth before rebounding to set down the next three Guardians, including back-to-back strikeouts of Steven Kwan and Angel Martinez. Varland looks to have earned the primary closing job in Toronto, as he's converted three straight save chances for the Jays. The right-hander has certainly earned the opportunity, posting a sparkling 0.60 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP and 23:4 K:BB through his first 15 innings this season.
Yohendrick Pinango
Yohendrick Pinango Set for MLB debut Sunday
Sun, Apr 26, 2026, 9:53 AM
Pinango is starting in left field and batting seventh against Cleveland on Sunday.
Analysis: Pinango got off to a nice start with Triple-A Buffalo this season, posting an .858 OPS with three homers, 13 RBI and two stolen bases over his first 22 games. He was summoned to the big-league club for the first time Saturday after Nathan Lukes (hamstring) was placed on the injured list. Pinango will get his first chance to show off his skill set with the Blue Jays against Cleveland starter Slade Cecconi.
Andres Gimenez
Andres Gimenez Getting rest Sunday
Sun, Apr 26, 2026, 9:45 AM
Gimenez isn't in the starting lineup Sunday versus the Guardians.
Analysis: Gimenez started Toronto's previous four contests, going 6-for-16 with three doubles and four RBI during that span. However, he'll begin Sunday on the bench. Ernie Clement is sliding over to start at shortstop, while Davis Schneider is starting at second base for Toronto.
Kazuma Okamoto
Kazuma Okamoto Goes yard again Saturday
Sat, Apr 25, 2026, 6:51 PM
Okamoto went 2-for-3 with a walk, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Guardians.
Analysis: His fourth-inning solo shot off Joey Cantillo got Toronto on the board, and gave Okamoto his second homer in as many days and his third in the last six games. The 29-year-old has five multi-hit performances in the last 11 contests, batting .282 (11-for-39) over that stretch with eight runs and eight RBI.
Louis Varland
Louis Varland Shaky in second save
Sat, Apr 25, 2026, 6:48 PM
Varland recorded his second save of the season in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Guardians, allowing one run on three hits and a walk in the ninth inning. He struck out two.
Analysis: Getting his first save chance after Toronto manager John Schneider officially announced that Jeff Hoffman would no longer be viewed as the team's primary closer, Varland seemed to buckle under the pressure, throwing 19 of 30 pitches for strikes as he gave up his first earned run of 2026. The right-hander kept his focus, however, and fanned Bo Naylor and Brayan Rocchio to end the threat. Varland still sports a 0.64 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 21:4 K:BB through 14 innings, but a repeat of Saturday's performance might encourage Schneider to give other relievers a look in the ninth.
Kevin Gausman
Kevin Gausman Snags second win
Sat, Apr 25, 2026, 6:41 PM
Gausman (2-1) picked up the win Saturday, allowing two runs on six hits over 6.2 innings in a 5-3 victory over the Guardians. He struck out three without walking a batter.
Analysis: The veteran righty tossed 63 of 91 pitches for strikes en route to his fourth quality start of the season in six trips to the mound. Gausman's three Ks were a season low, however, and after racking up a stunning 21:0 K:BB through his first two starts, he's managed just a 17:7 K:BB in 23 frames over his last four. He's been effective either way and will take a 2.57 ERA and 0.94 WHIP into his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in Minnesota.
Eric Lauer
Eric Lauer Relegated to bullpen
Sat, Apr 25, 2026, 11:50 AM
Manager John Schneider said Saturday that Lauer will pitch out of the bullpen going forward, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Trey Yesavage (shoulder) is set to make his return from the injured list Tuesday and start against Boston, which will squeeze Lauer out of the rotation and back into a long-relief role. The 30-year-old southpaw has struggled through his first five appearances of the season, turning in a 6.75 ERA and 1.54 WHIP alongside a 19:12 K:BB across 22.2 innings.
