Andruw Monasterio
Andruw Monasterio Slides in at shortstop
Sun, May 17, 2026, 9:57 PM
Monasterio started at shortstop and went 1-for-4 in Sunday's 8-1 loss to Atlanta.
Analysis: Monasterio has made two consecutive starts at shortstop, as Trevor Story (groin) was added to the injured list and could face surgery. It's unclear if Monasterio will become the everyday fill-in at shortstop, but interim manager Chad Tracy put him in the starting lineup against right-handers Saturday and Sunday. Other than Monasterio, the Red Sox have a host of options on the 26-man roster that can play shortstop, including Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Nick Sogard and Marcelo Mayer.
Justin Foscue
Justin Foscue Makes third straight start
Sun, May 17, 2026, 9:45 PM
Foscue started at second base and went 0-for-4 in Sunday's 8-0 win over Houston.
Analysis: Foscue, who is benefitting from an injury to Josh Smith (thigh/wrist/illness), made a third consecutive start at second base. Ezequiel Duran had been filling in for Smith, but he's now needed to cover shortstop for the injured Corey Seager. Foscue has gone 2-for-11 in his three starts and is batting .182 over nine games since being recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on May 5.
J.P. Crawford
J.P. Crawford Dealing with contusion
Sun, May 17, 2026, 9:44 PM
Crawford suffered a right triceps in Sunday night's 8-3 loss to the Padres, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports.
Analysis: Crawford sustained the injury when he was hit by a 91.6 mph fastball from San Diego's starter Lucas Giolito in the third frame. The shortstop remained in the contest for the following inning, but he was struggling to extend his arm due to inflammation, according to manager Dan Wilson. The Mariners are set to begin a three-game series at home against the White Sox on Monday, and Crawford's availability will likely hinge on if the inflammation has gone down.
Ezequiel Duran
Ezequiel Duran Moves to shortstop
Sun, May 17, 2026, 9:25 PM
Duran started at shortstop and went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Sunday's 8-0 win over the Astros.
Analysis: Duran, who had been filling in for injured second baseman Josh Smith (thigh/wrist/illness), has been shifted to shortstop the last three games with Corey Seager (back) unavailable. Seager is headed back to Texas for an MRI, and Duran should be in the lineup most days with the Rangers' middle infield sidelined.
Steven Kwan
Steven Kwan Dropped in order
Sun, May 17, 2026, 9:15 PM
Kwan batted sixth for a second straight game and went 0-for-2 with two walks and a run scored in Sunday's 10-3 win over the Reds.
Analysis: It was 2022 the last time Kwan batted somewhere other than leadoff before this weekend's games against the Reds. He's responded to the move with a hit, four walks and three runs scored while the Guardians' offense erupted for 17 runs in wins over Cincinnati. A few weeks ago, Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt chalked up Kwan's slow start this season to a tough month, per Cade Cracas of SI.com, but three weeks later, the leadoff batter was slashing .201/.308/.258 and Vogt made the move. Daniel Schneemann took over the top spot in the order.
Anthony Volpe
Anthony Volpe Caps busy weekend with three RBI
Sun, May 17, 2026, 9:09 PM
Volpe went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI, two walks and a run scored in Sunday's 7-6 extra-inning loss to the Mets.
Analysis: Volpe gave Mets pitching fits throughout this weekend's Subway Series, drawing multiple walks in all three contests. The two hits and RBI were both the shortstop's first of the season through four games so far, and he's swiftly putting together a case for more action even once Jose Caballero (finger) comes back from the injured list. In any event, Volpe should remain the Yankees' everyday shortstop until Caballero is cleared to return.
David Bednar
David Bednar Serves up three-run homer
Sun, May 17, 2026, 8:58 PM
Bednar blew the save Sunday against the Mets, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk in the ninth inning. He struck out one.
Analysis: Called upon to protect a 6-3 lead in the ninth inning, Bednar was taken deep by Tyrone Taylor for a three-run home run for his second blown save of the campaign. The right-hander has been shaky for most of the season as the Yankees' closer, logging a 4.95 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 23:7 K:BB with 10 saves over 20 frames. Bednar figures to remain the club's top choice for ninth-inning work going forward, but it's worth noting Camilo Doval is a possible alternative with plenty of closing experience from his time with the Giants.
Shawn Armstrong
Shawn Armstrong Throws in rehab game
Sun, May 17, 2026, 8:51 PM
Armstrong (groin) allowed one hit and struck out one over a scoreless inning for Double-A Akron on Friday, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: This was the second rehab outing for Armstrong, who also threw an inning Wednesday. The Guardians are determining the next step for the right-hander.
Elmer Rodriguez
Elmer Rodriguez Serviceable in no-decision
Sun, May 17, 2026, 8:49 PM
Rodriguez didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Mets, allowing one run on five hits and one walk in 4.1 innings. He struck out one.
Analysis: Recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for a spot start, Rodriguez gave the Yankees 4.1 quality frames Sunday. The 22-year-old right-hander has not yet pitched at least five innings in any of his first three major-league starts, but he's at least managed to keep the ball in the yard entirely en route to posting a troublesome 4.15 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and 6:9 K:BB over 13 innings. Rodriguez is next tentatively slated to take the hill against the division-rival Rays, but the expectation is that Gerrit Cole (elbow) will retake his place in New York's rotation after making one more rehab appearance.
Will Benson
Will Benson Leads off again
Sun, May 17, 2026, 8:40 PM
Benson batted leadoff for the third time in the last five games and went 0-for-3 in Sunday's 10-3 loss to Cleveland.
Analysis: The struggles of TJ Friedl (.182 average) has forced Cincinnati manager Terry Francona to seek other solutions at leadoff. Either Benson or Dane Myers has hit atop the order the last five games. Benson's .176 doesn't scream leadoff batter, but his ability to get on base (17.4 BB%) makes him a better option than Friedl at this time. Benson has just one hit over his last 19 at-bats.
Freddy Peralta
Freddy Peralta Lacks command in no-decision
Sun, May 17, 2026, 8:40 PM
Peralta didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Yankees, allowing three runs on two hits and six walks in five innings. He struck out four.
Analysis: Peralta really labored Sunday, tossing just 44 of his 96 pitches for strikes while tying a career worst in walks allowed. Control has proven to be a persistent problem for the 29-year-old right-hander, who has issued multiple free passes in eight of his 10 starts on the year. Peralta has yet to work into the seventh inning this year, but he's pitched at least five frames in nine outings en route to producing a steady 3.31 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 54:25 K:BB over 54.1 innings. He's set to face the division-rival Marlins his next time out.
TJ Friedl
TJ Friedl Returns to lineup
Sun, May 17, 2026, 8:29 PM
Friedl started in center field and batted eighth in Sunday's 10-3 loss to the Guardians. He went 0-for-2 and was pinch hit for in the seventh inning.
Analysis: Friedl's playing time has taken a dramatic hit, as Sunday's start was his first in four games. When a leadoff batter is hitting .184 two months into the season, that forces a manager to seek other solutions in the field and at leadoff. Will Benson batted leadoff Sunday, and he's been sharing that role with Dane Myers the last five contests. For now, Friedl appears to be in a platoon, getting starts against righties, but either Benson or JJ Bleday could serve that role if Friedl doesn't improve. He's gone 2-for-25 over the last eight games.
Jose Fernandez
Jose Fernandez Snags fifth steal
Sun, May 17, 2026, 8:28 PM
Fernandez went 1-for-3 with one RBI and one stolen base in Sunday's 8-6 win over the Rockies.
Analysis: Fernandez started all three games of this weekend series against the Rockies, going 4-for-12 with two RBI and two steals. Two of those starts came against right-handed pitchers, though Ketel Marte serving as designated hitter Saturday before resting Sunday likely factored into Fernandez's usage in the field. Through 127 plate appearances this year, Fernandez is hitting .275 with a .693 OPS, three home runs, five steals, 14 RBI and 20 runs scored. He'll play regularly against left-handed pitchers, but it doesn't look like he'll be strictly platooned when his hitting is good.
Gabriel Moreno
Gabriel Moreno Gets on base four times
Sun, May 17, 2026, 8:23 PM
Moreno went 3-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored in Sunday's 8-6 win over the Rockies.
Analysis: Moreno logged his third multi-hit effort in a row, a span that also includes his two steals this season. His bat looks to be coming around -- prior to this hot stretch, he went 0-for-16 over a six-game span. The catcher is hitting .253 with a .677 OPS, one home run, 12 RBI, 11 runs scored and seven doubles across 92 plate appearances this season.
Paul Sewald
Paul Sewald Secures 10th save
Sun, May 17, 2026, 8:21 PM
Sewald walked one and struck out none in a scoreless and hitless inning to earn the save in Sunday's 8-6 win over Rockies.
Analysis: Sewald took his first blown save of the season Wednesday versus the Rangers, and he didn't pitch for three days after that. He bounced back well Sunday, throwing 11 of 16 pitches for strikes to pick up his 10th save in 11 chances this year. Aside from Wednesday, Sewald has mostly taken care of business when closing, but his struggles have been more prevalent when in non-save situations. He's at a 4.41 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 19:6 K:BB across 16.1 innings this season, though he's also allowed three home runs.
Michael Soroka
Michael Soroka Strikes out eight in win
Sun, May 17, 2026, 8:17 PM
Soroka (6-2) allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight over 5.2 innings to earn the win over the Rockies on Sunday.
Analysis: Soroka escaped a Coors Field start without allowing a homer, and the eight strikeouts were his most in any of his last six outings. He's now allowed two runs or less in seven of his nine starts this season, including each of his last three, though he came up an out short of a quality start. For the season, he has a 3.49 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 55:14 K:BB through 49 innings. Soroka is projected to make his next start at home in a rematch with the Rockies.
Michael Lorenzen
Michael Lorenzen Loses fourth straight start
Sun, May 17, 2026, 8:13 PM
Lorenzen (2-6) allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and three walks while striking out five over 4.2 innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Diamondbacks.
Analysis: This was Lorenzen's fourth straight loss, and he's allowed 20 runs (19 earned) over 20 innings in that span. This is the third time in five home outings he's been on the hook for at least six earned runs. Overall, he has a 7.03 ERA, 1.91 WHIP and 36:17 K:BB across 48.2 innings over 11 appearances (10 starts). Lorenzen's next start is projected to be a rematch with the Diamondbacks in Arizona.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Clouts first homer in win
Sun, May 17, 2026, 8:04 PM
Gurriel went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in Sunday's 8-6 win over Colorado.
Analysis: Gurriel had a run-producing single in the third inning and then belted a solo home run in the fifth. It was the first homer of the season for Gurriel, who's had a slow start since being activated off the 60-day injured list in April; however, the bat has showed recent life. He's delivered runs in four of the last five games and is 6-for-20 with three extra base hits and five RBI during that span.
Corbin Carroll
Corbin Carroll Big day in win
Sun, May 17, 2026, 7:46 PM
Carroll went 3-for-4 with a walk, two home runs, three RBI and an additional run scored in Sunday's 8-6 win over the Rockies.
Analysis: Carroll homered on consecutive at-bats to record his ninth multi-homer game. The outfielder is up to seven home runs over 43 games, slightly off last season's pace when Carroll had 31 HRs over 143 contests.
J.P. Crawford
J.P. Crawford Exits early Sunday
Sun, May 17, 2026, 7:26 PM
Crawford exited Sunday night's contest versus the Padres in the fifth inning after being hit by a pitch on his right arm earlier in the contest, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Crawford took a 91.6 mph fastball from Lucas Giolito off his right triceps in the bottom of the third inning, and he ultimately exited the contest before the top of the fifth frame. The fact that he was able to remain in the game for an additional inning after being hit is a positive sign, but more information on his status will likely come in the near future. Leo Rivas replaced Crawford at shortstop, batting atop Seattle's lineup against San Diego.
