Sonny Gray
Sonny Gray Yields four runs in loss
Wed, Jul 2, 2025, 10:35 PM
Gray (8-3) took the loss against the Pirates on Wednesday, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six across 6.1 innings.
Analysis: Though he gave up a run in the second, Gray was dominant through his first six frames, at one point retiring 14 straight batters. However, things fell apart for the Cardinals' ace in the seventh, when he allowed three of the four hitters he faced on base and was tagged for three more runs. He now sits at a 3.51 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 100 innings this season, and his 107 strikeouts is tied with Nick Pivetta for 13th most in the National League. Gray is projected to start against the Nationals at home next week, which may be his final turn in the rotation before the All-Star break.
Willson Contreras
Willson Contreras Idle with bruised wrist
Wed, Jul 2, 2025, 8:28 AM
Contreras (wrist) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: As anticipated, Contreras will be held out of the lineup for Wednesday's series finale after he was forced out of Tuesday's 1-0 loss due to a left wrist contusion, which he sustained when he was hit by a 99-mile-per-hour Paul Skenes fastball. With a team off day looming Thursday, Contreras will get two full days to heal before potentially rejoining the lineup in Friday's series opener with the Cubs. Alec Burleson will cover first base Wednesday in Contreras' stead.
Nolan Arenado
Nolan Arenado Remaining on bench Wednesday
Wed, Jul 2, 2025, 8:25 AM
Arenado (finger) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: After spraining his right index finger in Sunday's win over the Guardians, Arenado went 0-for-3 as the Cardinals' designated hitter in Monday's 7-0 loss to the Pirates. The injury was still bothering him enough coming out of that game for the Cardinals to hold him out for Tuesday's 1-0 loss, and the veteran third baseman will get another day off to heal Wednesday. Thomas Saggese will cover the hot corner in place of Arenado, who will benefit from a team off day Thursday before potentially returning to the lineup for this weekend's series versus the Cubs.
Andre Pallante
Andre Pallante Blanks Bucs in no-decision
Wed, Jul 2, 2025, 8:17 AM
Pallante came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 1-0 loss to the Pirates, scattering one hit and two walks over seven scoreless innings. He struck out three.
Analysis: The righty was brilliant in his seventh quality start of the season, not even allowing a Pittsburgh runner to get into scoring position, but the St. Louis offense couldn't solve Paul Skenes and the Bucs bullpen. Pallante has given up three earned runs or fewer in five straight trips to the mound, posting a 2.22 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 19:8 K:BB in 28.1 innings over that span, but he has just a 1-1 record to show for it. He'll look for more run support in his next outing, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Nationals.
Willson Contreras
Willson Contreras Avoids structural damage
Tue, Jul 1, 2025, 7:24 PM
Contreras (hand) underwent X-rays, which came back negative, after exiting Tuesday's contest in Pittsburgh, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Contreras is considered day-to-day as he avoided any structural damage after being struck in the left hand by a fastball from Paul Skenes in the fourth inning Tuesday. With the Cardinals set to finish their series against the Pirates on Wednesday prior to an off day Thursday, it's possible that the 33-year-old could be held out until Friday's series opener at Wrigley Field.
Willson Contreras
Willson Contreras Exits early Tuesday
Tue, Jul 1, 2025, 6:50 PM
Contreras (hand/wrist) exited Tuesday's contest against the Pirates in the bottom of the fourth inning, Danny Demilio of PittsburghBaseballNow.com reports.
Analysis: Contreras was struck in the left hand/wrist by a 99.3 mph fastball from Paul Skenes to open the top of the fourth, ultimately remaining in the game for the rest of the Cardinals' time at-bat. The 33-year-old was replaced at first base by Alec Burleson while Garrett Hampson entered the game in right field. More information on the status of Contreras will likely come in the near future.
Jordan Walker
Jordan Walker Needs rehab assignment
Tue, Jul 1, 2025, 5:54 PM
Walker (appendix) is rejoining the team this week in Pittsburgh to meet with training staff before heading out on a rehab assignment, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: The 23-year-old has apparently recovered well from appendicitis, but he won't return from the 10-day injured list when first eligible Friday. Walker may only need a couple rehab games in the minors and could be back with the Cardinals early next week.
Nolan Arenado
Nolan Arenado Battling sprained finger
Tue, Jul 1, 2025, 4:35 PM
Arenado was diagnosed with a right index finger sprain Tuesday, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Arenado initially injured himself Sunday and worked as a DH on Monday, but his diagnosis will cause him to miss the starting nine entirely Tuesday while Nolan Gorman starts at the hot corner. X-rays on Arenado's finger came back negative, so he's being considered day-to-day for now.
Nolan Arenado
Nolan Arenado Out of St. Louis lineup
Tue, Jul 1, 2025, 2:36 PM
Arenado is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game in Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Arenado was lifted from Sunday's game in Cleveland with a jammed right index finger and was used at designated hitter Monday. It's not clear whether his absence from Tuesday's lineup is related to that injury or is simply a day of rest. Nolan Gorman will be at third base and bat fifth for the Cardinals.
Lars Nootbaar
Lars Nootbaar Returns to lineup Tuesday
Tue, Jul 1, 2025, 2:34 PM
Nootbaar (intercostal) will start in left field and bat seventh in Tuesday's game against the Pirates.
Analysis: Nootbaar missed each of the last two contests after aggravating a left intercostal injury, but he took batting practice Monday and is feeling well enough to give it a go in the second game of the series. The outfielder is slashing .227/.334/.381 with 11 home runs in 78 contests this season.
Lars Nootbaar
Lars Nootbaar IL decision could come Tuesday
Tue, Jul 1, 2025, 10:00 AM
Nootbaar (intercostal) was slated to take batting practice Monday to determine whether he'd be available to play Tuesday or require a longer absence, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Nootbaar was given a pain-killing shot last week to combat a left intercostal issue and he hasn't played since aggravating the injury on a check swing in Saturday's game versus the Guardians. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol noted Monday before Nootbaar was slated to take batting practice that the outfielder "said it's feeling a little better." If it's determined Tuesday that Nootbaar isn't ready to play, the Cardinals could place him on the 10-day injured list. Brendan Donovan has been in left field and Thomas Saggese has handled second base the last two games with Nootbaar unavailable.
Erick Fedde
Erick Fedde Clobbered again in loss
Mon, Jun 30, 2025, 9:29 PM
Fedde (3-8) took the loss Monday at Pittsburgh, allowing seven runs on 10 hits and three walks over five innings with no strikeouts.
Analysis: Fedde conceded a leadoff homer to Spencer Horwitz in the first, and it was all downhill from there. The Pirates lineup peppered the St. Louis right-hander for 10 hits, matching Fedde's season-worst mark achieved when he also allowed seven runs against Milwaukee on April 27. With this disaster, the 32-year-old coughed up seven earned runs for the second consecutive start, as he failed to tally a K for the first time this season. Fedde is slated to carry a 4.56 ERA through 92.2 total innings into a difficult road matchup against the Cubs this weekend.
Nolan Arenado
Nolan Arenado Good to go Monday
Mon, Jun 30, 2025, 1:43 PM
Arenado (finger) will start at designated hitter and bat fifth in Monday's game against the Pirates.
Analysis: After jamming his right index finger early in Sunday's 7-0 win over the Guardians, Arenado initially stayed in the game before he was lifted for a pinch hitter in the eighth inning. The Cardinals described Arenado's early exit as precautionary, and his inclusion in the lineup a day later seemingly supports that notion. While the veteran third baseman is on pace for a second straight season with a sub-.400 slugging percentage, he's at least gotten his batting average back on track in June, hitting .283 through his first 26 games of the month.
Lars Nootbaar
Lars Nootbaar Likely out until Tuesday
Mon, Jun 30, 2025, 10:03 AM
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that Nootbaar will likely remain out of the lineup until at least Tuesday while the outfielder manages a left intercostal injury, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Nootbaar has been in and out of the lineup over the past week due to the injury, which he appeared to aggravate during a check swing in Saturday's 9-6 win over the Guardians. The left-handed-hitting outfielder sat out Sunday's 7-0 victory while Cleveland sent lefty Logan Allen to the bump, and it makes sense for the Cardinals to hold him out again Monday versus the Pirates while southpaw Andrew Heaney takes the hill for Pittsburgh. While the Cardinals seem hopeful that Nootbaar will be ready to go Tuesday, a stint on the 10-day injured list can't be ruled out, given the nature of the injury.
Jordan Walker
Jordan Walker Tracking toward Friday return
Mon, Jun 30, 2025, 9:55 AM
Walker (appendix) appears on track to be activated from the 10-day injured list prior to Friday's game against the Cubs, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Coming back from appendicitis, Walker has played two rehab games at Triple-A Memphis -- one as the designated hitter and one as the right fielder -- and seems to have come out of those contests feeling good. He will remain with Memphis for a few more days before likely returning to the active roster this weekend. Walker had been seeing his playing time versus right-handed pitching dip prior to his injury, but it's possible he'll see an uptick in starts if Lars Nootbaar's intercostal issue lingers.
Victor Scott II
Victor Scott II Homers in win
Mon, Jun 30, 2025, 8:02 AM
Scott went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Sunday's 7-0 win over the Guardians.
Analysis: Scott extended St. Louis' lead to 5-0 in the seventh inning with a 401-foot blast off Hunter Gaddis, his fourth homer of the year. Scott's gone 4-for-8 with a pair of extra-base hits over his last two games after going just 5-for-30 (.167) in his previous 10 contests. Overall, he's slashing .244/.330/.339 with 37 runs scored, 28 RBI and 22 stolen bases across 280 plate appearances this season.
Nolan Gorman
Nolan Gorman Smacks seventh homer
Mon, Jun 30, 2025, 7:52 AM
Gorman went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer, a stolen base and a second run scored in Sunday's 7-0 win over the Guardians.
Analysis: Gorman got the scoring started early, launching a 428-foot homer with two outs in the first inning off lefty Logan Allen. The 25-year-old Gorman has taken advantage of a regular starting role since Ivan Herrera (hamstring) landed on the IL, going 8-for-27 (.296) with three homers, seven RBI and a .951 OPS in his last seven games. Overall, Gorman's slashing .224/.314/.412 with seven homers, 25 runs scored and 25 RBI across 191 plate appearances this season.
Matthew Liberatore
Matthew Liberatore Blanks Cleveland for sixth win
Sun, Jun 29, 2025, 4:08 PM
Liberatore (6-6) earned the win Sunday over the Guardians, allowing three hits and five walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out five.
Analysis: Liberatore struggled with his command a bit, issuing a season-high five walks, though he was able to keep Cleveland off the board en route to a third straight win and quality start. The 25-year-old Liberatore lowered his ERA to 3.70 on the season with a 1.16 WHIP and 76:17 K:BB across 16 starts (92.1 innings). The left-hander is currently scheduled to face the division-leading Cubs on the road in his next outing.
Nolan Arenado
Nolan Arenado Makes precautionary exit Sunday
Sun, Jun 29, 2025, 2:11 PM
Arenado said after Sunday's 7-0 win over the Guardians that his removal from the contest was due to a jammed right index finger, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Arenado went 2-for-3 with a double before he was lifted for a pinch hitter as a precautionary measure in the top of the eighth inning. The Cardinals were up 5-0 at the time of Arenado's departure, which adds credence to the idea that the third baseman's removal was precautionary. Even so, fantasy managers will want to keep close tabs on Arenado's status heading into Monday's series opener in Pittsburgh.
Lars Nootbaar
Lars Nootbaar May be nursing rib injury
Sun, Jun 29, 2025, 10:51 AM
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that he had no medical update available on Nootbaar, who is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians after he appeared to tweak his rib on a check swing Saturday, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Nootbaar's absence from the lineup Sunday could have more to do with the fact that the Guardians are starting a lefty (Logan Allen) rather than an injury, but the outfielder's fantasy managers will nonetheless want to keep an eye on his status. Nootbaar, who had been nursing rib pain coming into Saturday, was able to finish out that contest.
