Matt Svanson
Matt Svanson Handling opener role Tuesday
Tue, Jul 7, 2026, 10:48 AM
Svanson will serve as the Cardinals' opening pitcher for the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Brewers, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Analysis: Svanson will be making his first MLB start and his first at any level in the professional ranks since 2022, but he's unlikely to cover more than an inning or two before exiting the game. Once Svanson's day is done, left-hander Bruce Zimmermann appears likely to work in bulk relief for St. Louis.
Blaze Jordan
Blaze Jordan Breather in first game
Tue, Jul 7, 2026, 10:46 AM
Jordan is absent from the lineup for the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Brewers.
Analysis: Jordan will likely be back in the lineup for the second game of the twin bill, but he'll begin the first contest on the bench. Jose Fermin is covering third base for the Cardinals in the matinee.
Masyn Winn
Masyn Winn Sitting out first game
Tue, Jul 7, 2026, 10:44 AM
Winn is not in the lineup for the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Brewers.
Analysis: JJ Wetherholt will slide over to make a start at shortstop, and Bryan Torres will cover second base. Winn should be back in the lineup for the nightcap.
Michael McGreevy
Michael McGreevy Getting extra rest
Tue, Jul 7, 2026, 10:43 AM
McGreevy won't start during Tuesday's doubleheader against the Brewers in order to get some extra rest, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: The right-hander was lined up to start in Tuesday's twin bill, but St. Louis will instead have Matt Svanson as the opener and Bruce Zimmermann as the bulk reliever in Game 1 while Hunter Dobbins starts the nightcap. There's been no indication of an injury for McGreevy, who given up just two runs across 12 innings over his past two starts. He'll presumably take the ball later in the series versus Milwaukee.
Max Rajcic
Max Rajcic Shifted to 60-day injured list
Tue, Jul 7, 2026, 10:29 AM
The Cardinals transferred Rajcic (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday.
Analysis: The transaction clears space on the 40-man roster for the addition of Bruce Zimmermann. Per Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat, Rajcic will travel to Dallas for a second opinion with Dr. Keith Meister, and there's "real concern" the reliever has a serious elbow injury.
Hunter Dobbins
Hunter Dobbins Added to roster as 27th man
Tue, Jul 7, 2026, 10:25 AM
The Cardinals recalled Dobbins from Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday.
Analysis: Dobbins is serving as the 27th man during Tuesday's doubleheader against the Brewers and is slated to start the second game. The right-hander has posted a 3.63 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 19:7 K:BB over 17.1 innings during his time with the big club this season. Dobbins is likely to be sent back down after his spot start.
Ryan Fernandez
Ryan Fernandez Dispatched to minors
Tue, Jul 7, 2026, 10:17 AM
The Cardinals optioned Fernandez to Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday.
Analysis: Fernandez took the loss in Monday's game versus the Brewers, getting charged with three runs (two earned) without recording an out. He's pitched well this season with a 2.70 ERA and 20:7 K:BB over 13.1 frames, but the Cardinals are desperate for fresh bullpen arms. Fernandez should be back in the big leagues soon enough.
Bruce Zimmermann
Bruce Zimmermann Added to roster for twin bill
Tue, Jul 7, 2026, 10:13 AM
The Cardinals selected Zimmermann's contract from Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday.
Analysis: Zimmermann is slated to work in bulk relief in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Brewers. The left-hander has had a solid season in Memphis' rotation, turning in a 3.78 ERA and 84:21 K:BB over 78.2 innings. His stay in the majors is likely to be brief.
Justin Bruihl
Justin Bruihl Expects to be 'fine'
Tue, Jul 7, 2026, 9:14 AM
Bruihl said that he expects to be "fine" after exiting Monday's appearance versus the Brewers with a right ankle sprain, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Bruihl rolled his ankle while fielding an infield single. The left-hander had thrown 23 pitches over 1.1 innings before being pulled, so there's a good chance he'll be unavailable for Tuesday's doubleheader regardless, but Bruihl should be able to avoid a stint on the injured list.
Poised for promotion
Tue, Jul 7, 2026, 8:15 AM
The Cardinals are slated to call up Gastelum from Triple-A Memphis, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Analysis: He's expected to be promoted either in between games during Tuesday's doubleheader or before Wednesday's contest. Gastelum has been on a roll at Memphis, turning in 18 consecutive scoreless appearances. Overall, the changeup artist has collected a 2.27 ERA and 49:17 K:BB over 43.2 innings this season. The Cardinals will need to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Gastelum.
Dustin May
Dustin May Fans seven in no-decision
Tue, Jul 7, 2026, 2:32 AM
May did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing four hits and no walks over 4.2 scoreless innings against the Brewers. He struck out seven.
Analysis: After exiting his previous start Thursday due to a right ankle injury, May kept the Milwaukee offense quiet before being removed after 81 pitches (55 strikes) as St. Louis planned to limit his workload Monday. It was a positive step in the right direction for the right-hander, who had surrendered a combined 11 runs across 2.2 innings in his previous two starts. On the year, the 28-year-old owns a 5-6 record with a 4.55 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 85:24 K:BB across 89 innings (17 starts). May is tentatively scheduled to make his next start Saturday against Atlanta.
Justin Bruihl
Justin Bruihl Suffers ankle sprain
Mon, Jul 6, 2026, 9:15 PM
Bruihl left Monday's game against Milwaukee with a left ankle sprain, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. He allowed one run on one hit and one walk over 1.1 innings.
Analysis: Bruihl appeared to tweak his ankle while fielding an infield dribbler, and he exited the game immediately after the play. He'll presumably be sent for additional testing to determine whether a trip to the injured list is warranted.
Hunter Dobbins
Hunter Dobbins Spot start on tap Tuesday
Mon, Jul 6, 2026, 4:16 PM
Manager Oliver Marmol confirmed that Dobbins will be recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday to start one game of the Cardinals' doubleheader with the Brewers in St. Louis, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Analysis: The doubleheader will force the Cardinals to temporarily expand their rotation to six men, so Dobbins is expected to make just one start before St. Louis presumably sends him back to the minors following the twin bill. The 26-year-old righty has previously made four appearances (two starts) for the Cardinals this season, going 0-1 while turning in a 3.63 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 19:7 K:BB over 17.1 innings.
Dustin May
Dustin May Will have limited workload Monday
Mon, Jul 6, 2026, 3:40 PM
May will be held to around 65 pitches during Monday's start against the Brewers, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Analysis: May made a quick recovery from a right ankle injury that forced him from last Thursday's start in Atlanta. However, the right-hander will be pitching on three days' rest Monday, and he has not thrown more than 44 pitches in a start in three weeks. The Cardinals will be cautious with May versus the Brewers, but assuming he comes out of Monday's outing with no setbacks, May should be ready for a normal workload this weekend against Atlanta.
Gordon Graceffo
Gordon Graceffo Rejoins big-league bullpen
Mon, Jul 6, 2026, 3:10 PM
The Cardinals recalled Graceffo from Triple-A Memphis on Monday, Dani Wexelman of Cardinals.tv reports.
Analysis: Graceffo was just optioned to Memphis last Friday and did not make an appearance during his brief stint with the team's top minor-league affiliate. The righty will provide a fresh bullpen arm as the Cardinals open up a five-game series against the rival Brewers on Monday.
Max Rajcic
Max Rajcic Shelved by elbow injury
Mon, Jul 6, 2026, 3:07 PM
The Cardinals placed Rajcic on the 15-day injured list Monday with a right elbow injury.
Analysis: Manager Oliver Marmol revealed that Rajcic felt elbow soreness after his last appearance Friday, and he's being sent for a second opinion before a more specific diagnosis is revealed, per Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat. The rookie reliever has yielded five runs with an 8:6 K:BB over nine innings out of the Cardinals' bullpen since being called up last month.
Lars Nootbaar
Lars Nootbaar Out of lineup against lefty
Mon, Jul 6, 2026, 2:59 PM
Nootbaar is absent from the lineup for Monday's contest versus the Brewers.
Analysis: The lefty-swinging Nootbaar will grab a seat as the Brewers use southpaw Shane Drohan in the series opener. Nelson Velazquez will patrol left field and hit cleanup for the Cardinals.
Alec Burleson
Alec Burleson Sitting versus southpaw
Mon, Jul 6, 2026, 2:55 PM
Burleson is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Brewers.
Analysis: The left-handed-hitting Burleson is slashing only .188/.215/.238 versus lefty hurlers, so the Cardinals will give him some rest as the Brewers send southpaw Shane Drohan to the hill. Blaze Jordan will slide across the diamond to first base, and Jose Fermin will occupy the hot corner.
Re-emerging as prospect in 2026
Mon, Jul 6, 2026, 9:47 AM
Cho has launched seven home runs in 10 games since being promoted to Double-A Springfield.
Analysis: Cho fell off the prospect radar after putting up a sub-.700 OPS over the last two seasons, but he's bounced back in a major way in 2026, slashing .271/.388/.546 with 15 home runs and 23 stolen bases between High-A Peoria and Springfield. The 15 long balls for Cho more than double his previous career high of seven. Cho -- who turns 23 in August -- has split time between all three outfield spots this season but profiles best in a corner.
Matthew Liberatore
Matthew Liberatore Wild in sixth loss
Sun, Jul 5, 2026, 6:29 PM
Liberatore (4-6) took the loss Sunday against the Cubs, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks in five-plus innings. He struck out three.
Analysis: Liberatore couldn't get through the sixth inning Sunday, but he was at least able to toss four scoreless frames in between the sixth inning and a two-run first frame by the Cubs. The 26-year-old southpaw was especially wild, landing just 44 of his 78 pitches for strikes while also plunking a trio of batters, so he might have been fortunate to complete five innings. Liberatore has an uninspiring 5.34 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 82:35 K:BB over 87.2 innings, and he's given up at least three runs in five of his last six outings.
