JJ Wetherholt
JJ Wetherholt Held out again Friday
Fri, Jun 5, 2026, 3:27 PM
Wetherholt (lower body) remains out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Reds.
Analysis: Wetherholt sat out Wednesday's game with lower-body soreness. It was expected that he would return to action Friday following the Cardinals' team off day Thursday, but the rookie infielder needs a bit more time. Bryan Torres will start at second base for St. Louis.
Matt Svanson
Matt Svanson Getting another look in majors
Fri, Jun 5, 2026, 3:18 PM
The Cardinals recalled Svanson from Triple-A Memphis on Friday.
Analysis: Svanson was sent down last month after posting a disappointing 8.77 ERA and 26:15 K:BB over 25.2 innings. He seemed to get back on track at Memphis, tossing 5.2 scoreless frames with an 8:1 K:BB. Svanson will be used in middle relief.
Ryan Fernandez
Ryan Fernandez Goes on IL with back pain
Fri, Jun 5, 2026, 3:16 PM
The Cardinals placed Fernandez on the 15-day injured list Friday with lower-back pain.
Analysis: Fernandez hadn't pitched in nearly a week, so it could be an injury that's nagged at him for a while. Matt Svanson will take his spot in the St. Louis bullpen.
Thomas Saggese
Thomas Saggese Optioned to Triple-A
Fri, Jun 5, 2026, 3:14 PM
The Cardinals optioned Saggese to Triple-A Memphis on Friday.
Analysis: Saggese boasts a 1.078 OPS over his last nine games, but he hasn't played much and would've been due for a further downturn in reps as the Cardinals roster gets healthier. He'll play regularly at Memphis while bouncing around to multiple positions.
Lars Nootbaar
Lars Nootbaar Activated ahead of season debut
Fri, Jun 5, 2026, 3:09 PM
The Cardinals activated Nootbaar (heels) from the 60-day injured list Friday.
Analysis: Noobaar is ready to make his season debut after recovering from offseason surgery to correct deformities in both heels. He looked good during a 12-game rehab stint, slashing .257/.409/.543 with three home runs and a 9:6 BB:K. The Cardinals will likely mix in some extra off days initially so they don't overload Nootbaar, but he's poised to be the team's everyday left fielder. Nootbaar is batting leadoff in Friday's game versus the Reds.
Authors best start of season
Fri, Jun 5, 2026, 11:26 AM
Mathews struck out nine while yielding just one hit and one walk over six shutout innings in a start for Triple-A Memphis on Thursday.
Analysis: It's the best start of the season for Mathews, who faced just one over the minimum and induced 16 whiffs on 80 pitches. Mathews' major control problems have persisted this season at Memphis with a 17 percent walk rate, but he's also sporting a 30.5 percent strikeout rate and has been able to hold his velocity deep into outings. He could reach St. Louis at some point in the second half if he can get the walks down to an acceptable level.
Cooper Hjerpe
Cooper Hjerpe Kicking off rehab assignment
Fri, Jun 5, 2026, 10:53 AM
Hjerpe (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment at the Cardinals' Florida Complex League affiliate Friday.
Analysis: It will be Hjerpe's first game action since he underwent Tommy John surgery last April. The left-hander will knock off some rust in the FCL before eventually moving up either to Double-A Springfield or Triple-A Memphis. Hjerpe is on the Cardinals' 40-man roster and could push to debut at some point in the second half. The 2022 first-round pick collected a 3.27 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 76:28 K:BB in 52.1 innings at Springfield in 2024.
JJ Wetherholt
JJ Wetherholt Playing through lower-half soreness
Thu, Jun 4, 2026, 9:01 AM
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Wednesday that Wetherholt has been playing with some lower-half soreness but is expected back in the lineup for Friday's game against the Reds, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Wetherholt didn't play in Wednesday's win over the Rangers in part so that he could have consecutive days of rest when combined with Thursday's team off day. Barring something unforeseen, the rookie second baseman will be back in the leadoff spot for the Cardinals in Friday's series opener versus Cincinnati.
Jordan Walker
Jordan Walker Records three hits Wednesday
Thu, Jun 4, 2026, 8:58 AM
Walker went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a stolen base in Wednesday's win over the Rangers.
Analysis: Walker extended his home-run drought to nine games, a stretch in which he's hitting .229 with a .479 OPS, but Wednesday's productive performance should serve as a confidence boost. Despite the slump, Walker remains one of the most dangerous hitters in the Cardinals lineup. He's hitting .291 with an .892 OPS through 59 games.
Riley O'Brien
Riley O'Brien Nabs 15th save of season
Thu, Jun 4, 2026, 8:54 AM
O'Brien recorded his 15th save of the season in Wednesday's win over the Rangers. He tossed a scoreless ninth inning with one walk.
Analysis: O'Brien walked Kyle Higashioka to start the ninth inning, but he retired Michael Helman, Joc Pederson and Josh Jung to close out the door on a potential Rangers comeback. O'Brien is now 15-for-19 in save chances in 2026 while posting a 3.95 ERA and 29:6 K:BB across 27.1 innings in 27 appearances. He should continue to operate as St. Louis' go-to option in the ninth inning until further notice.
Andre Pallante
Andre Pallante One out shy of quality start
Thu, Jun 4, 2026, 8:51 AM
Pallante (6-4) earned the win Wednesday against the Rangers after allowing one run on three hits and two walks across 5.2 innings. He struck out five while also hitting a batter and tossing a wild pitch.
Analysis: Pallante was just one out away from recording what would've been his third quality start over his last four appearances. The 27-year-old right-hander had some command issues, as evidenced by his third wild pitch of the season, but he continues to deliver results. Over his last four starts, Pallante owns a 2.95 ERA with a 1.17 WHIP across 21.1 innings. He's scheduled to make his next start on the road against the Mets next week.
JJ Wetherholt
JJ Wetherholt Getting breather Wednesday
Wed, Jun 3, 2026, 3:30 PM
Wetherholt is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rangers.
Analysis: It's a rare off day for Wetherholt, who has now started 57 of 60 games for the Cardinals this season. Thomas Saggese will fill in at second base, and Masyn Winn will be elevated to the leadoff spot as St. Louis tries to avoid a series sweep.
Ramon Urias
Ramon Urias Nearing rehab assignment
Wed, Jun 3, 2026, 9:04 AM
Urias (elbow) is expected to begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Memphis as soon as this weekend, Derrick Goold and Amber Winkler of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch report.
Analysis: Urias is nearly ready for game action after being sidelined for the past month with right elbow lateral epicondylitis. The veteran infielder should be ready to rejoin the Cardinals' roster by mid-June, and Urias might see an uptick in playing time, given Nolan Gorman's struggles.
Nathan Church
Nathan Church Slated for rehab games
Wed, Jun 3, 2026, 8:59 AM
Church (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Thursday, Derrick Goold and Amber Winkler of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch report.
Analysis: Church has been upping his activity level of late and now a rehab stint has been scheduled. He's missed less than two weeks with a left shoulder strain, so Church's rehab assignment should not be a lengthy one.
Dustin May
Dustin May Racks up nine K's vs. Rangers
Tue, Jun 2, 2026, 10:43 PM
May did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Rangers, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out nine over 5.2 innings.
Analysis: After carrying a no-hitter into the eighth inning in his last start, May came out dominant again Tuesday -- piling up eight strikeouts through the first four innings. The right-hander was one out away from another quality start before Alejandro Osuna delivered a go-ahead RBI knock in the sixth inning, forcing his exit. May has still not recorded a win since April 21 and he now owns a 4.59 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 60:19 K:BB across 66.2 innings. He's slated to face the Mets in his next start.
Tink Hence
Tink Hence Returning to Triple-A
Tue, Jun 2, 2026, 6:27 PM
Hence returned to Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Analysis: Hence was sent out to the Cardinals' complex in Florida in late April to work on his mechanics after allowing eight earned runs in just 8.1 innings to begin the year at Triple-A. Although he never played a game in the FCL, the Cardinals are seemingly pleased with his progress and will now rejoin the Redbirds. The 23-year-old righty owns a 40-man roster spot, so if he bounces back nicely at Memphis, he could be called up for his MLB debut at some point this season.
Ramon Urias
Ramon Urias Taking batting practice, throwing
Tue, Jun 2, 2026, 8:52 AM
Urias (elbow) has resumed taking batting practice and is going through a throwing program, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Urias has been shelved for nearly a month with tennis elbow, but he's making some strides in his recovery. There's no word yet on when he might be ready for a rehab assignment, but it shouldn't be far off.
Nathan Church
Nathan Church Begins throwing, taking BP
Tue, Jun 2, 2026, 8:49 AM
Church (shoulder) has begun a throwing program and has been taking batting practice, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Church has been sidelined for nearly two weeks while dealing with a left shoulder strain. He will likely need a rehab assignment before activation from the 10-day injured list and appears close to being game-ready. With Lars Nootbaar (heels) expected to return before him, Church's best chance at playing time once he makes it back could be unseating Victor Scott in center field.
Michael McGreevy
Michael McGreevy Hurls quality start but takes loss
Mon, Jun 1, 2026, 11:12 PM
McGreevy (3-5) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out one batter over six innings in a loss to Texas on Monday.
Analysis: McGreevy began by tossing three scoreless innings before the Rangers scored one run in each of the fourth and fifth frames. Those were enough to hold up, as the Cardinals' offense managed just one run of support. As usual, McGreevy didn't miss many bats -- he had just six whiffs and one punchout -- but he nonetheless managed his seventh quality start of the campaign. Despite a paltry 6.0 K/9 and 3-5 record, the right-hander is having a solid season, posting a 2.98 ERA and 1.10 WHIP through 66.1 innings spanning 12 starts.
Lars Nootbaar
Lars Nootbaar Lined up for activation Friday
Mon, Jun 1, 2026, 8:49 AM
Nootbaar (heels) "appears targeted" to be activated from the 60-day injured list before the start of Friday's series against the Reds, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Analysis: A previous report indicated that the Cardinals were aiming for June 1 for Nootbaar's season debut, but it seems he will remain on his rehab assignment a bit longer. The 28-year-old has looked good in his first 10 rehab games spread across three affiliates, slashing .259/.412/.519 with two home runs and a 7:4 BB:K. Nootbaar is working his way back from offseason double heel surgery.
