Gregory Santos
Gregory Santos Could return Saturday
Fri, Jul 26, 2024, 6:11 PM
Mariners manager Scott Servais said Friday that the results of Santos' MRI on his right knee "came back OK," Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: It's not as promising as hearing that the MRI came back clean, but it appears Santos will avoid a stint on the IL and could be available as soon as Saturday. Santos was removed in the eighth inning of Wednesday's game against the Angels after being called for a balk. Before exiting Wednesday, he allowed two runs on two hits while striking out one over 0.2 innings.
Yimi Garcia
Yimi Garcia Headed to Seattle
Fri, Jul 26, 2024, 3:49 PM
The Mariners acquired Garcia from the Blue Jays on Friday in exchange for Jonatan Clase and Jacob Sharp, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Garcia has been one of the better relievers in baseball this season, posting a 2.70 ERA and 42:8 K:BB K:BB over 30 innings while recording five saves. He will be part of the late-inning picture in Seattle but should be behind Andres Munoz in the saves pecking order.
Randy Arozarena
Randy Arozarena Expected to report Saturday
Fri, Jul 26, 2024, 10:19 AM
Arozarena is expected to report to the Mariners on Saturday ahead of their game against the White Sox, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: The trade sending Arozarena to Seattle was made official earlier Friday, but the logistics of joining his new team won't allow him to suit up immediately. Arozarena will likely see most of his action with the Mariners in left field, although he is capable of handling all three outfield spots.
Luke Raley
Luke Raley Records seventh steal in loss
Thu, Jul 25, 2024, 11:35 AM
Raley went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in a loss to the Angels on Wednesday.
Analysis: Raley's hit was only his second over the last nine games, a nightmarish stretch of 29 plate appearances during which the outfielder has posted a 27.6 percent strikeout rate. Raley's steal was also his seventh of the season, putting him halfway to the career-best 14 he recorded with the Rays in 2023. The 29-year-old's recent struggles notwithstanding, Raley doesn't appear to be in danger of losing his grip on an everyday role with the Mariners now down both Dominic Canzone (thigh) and Julio Rodriguez (ankle) in the outfield.
Victor Robles
Victor Robles Another stolen base Wednesday
Thu, Jul 25, 2024, 11:27 AM
Robles went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in a loss to the Angels on Wednesday.
Analysis: Robles reached safely for the eighth straight game, continuing to serve as one of the few consistent bats in a struggling and now injury-hampered Mariners lineup. The veteran outfielder is also evolving into a consistently effective threat on the basepaths, with Wednesday's steal his sixth in the last seven contests. Robles' blistering bat since joining Seattle was already starting to carve him out additional playing time, but injuries to Dominic Canzone (thigh) and Julio Rodriguez (ankle) have essentially locked Robles into an everyday role for the foreseeable future.
Jorge Polanco
Jorge Polanco Reaches twice in loss
Thu, Jul 25, 2024, 11:20 AM
Polanco went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk in a loss to the Angels on Wednesday.
Analysis: Polanco was productive on yet another night of anemic play by the Mariners offense as a whole, snapping a brief 0-for-8 skid that had encompassed the previous two games. Polanco has now hit safely in five of the last seven contests overall, and the .231 average he's mustered in that span actually represents significant improvement over his body of work for the majority of the season.
Mitch Haniger
Mitch Haniger Goes deep in loss
Wed, Jul 24, 2024, 10:46 PM
Haniger went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk Wednesday in a loss to the Angels.
Analysis: Haniger accounted for Seattle's only run with a second-inning solo blast to center field. He'd been struggling coming into the contest, batting a meager .130 through 10 contests in July and an even more meager .098 over his previous 18 games overall. Still. Haniger has consistently been in the Mariners' lineup of late due in part to injuries to Julio Rodriguez (ankle) and Dominic Canzone (thigh).
Luis Castillo
Luis Castillo Tosses six scoreless frames
Wed, Jul 24, 2024, 10:35 PM
Castillo allowed five hits and issued two walks while striking out seven batters over six scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Angels on Wednesday.
Analysis: Castillo induced a modest nine whiffs, but he still managed to tally a healthy seven punchouts. The veteran hurler has tossed exactly six scoreless frames in two of his past three outings, and he's recorded a quality start in four straight appearances. Castillo's strikeout numbers are down this season -- he's on pace to record fewer punchouts than innings pitched for just the second time in his career -- but he's otherwise been reliable, posting a 3.38 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 126:37 K:BB over 130.1 innings.
Gregory Santos
Gregory Santos Exits early Wednesday
Wed, Jul 24, 2024, 5:14 PM
Santos was removed from Wednesday's game against the Angels due to an apparent injury, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports.
Analysis: Santos was called for a balk in the eighth inning and looked to be in pain immediately afterward, prompting a visit from a trainer. It wasn't immediately apparent what was bothering him.
Matt Brash
Matt Brash Set to begin throwing next month
Wed, Jul 24, 2024, 1:30 PM
Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said Wednesday that Brash (elbow) will begin a throwing program in mid-August, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Brash underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery May 8 but looks to be progressing well in the early stages of his rehab. He shed a protective brace on his elbow a little over a month ago and will take the first meaningful step forward in his recovery when he begins throwing in a few weeks. If he continues to experience no setbacks with his throwing program late in the season and throughout the offseason, Brash could be ready to face hitters by the end of spring training, but he'll still almost certainly open the 2025 campaign on the injured list.
Julio Rodriguez
Julio Rodriguez Unlikely to return in minimum time
Wed, Jul 24, 2024, 1:22 PM
Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said Wednesday that Rodriguez (ankle) will be re-evaluated around Aug. 1, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports.
Analysis: Rodriguez will be eligible to return from the 10-day injured list Aug. 1, but the Mariners are off that day before starting a three-game series with the Phillies on Aug. 2. Based on Hollander's comments, Rodriguez doesn't sound like he'll be able to take part in baseball activities over the next 10 days before he's re-evaluated, so the 23-year-old would seem to be unlikely to be cleared for the series with the Phillies. Rodriguez was diagnosed with a right high-ankle sprain after suffering the injury while leaping into the outfield wall in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Astros. Victor Robles has drawn three straight starts in center field in Rodriguez's stead.
J.P. Crawford
J.P. Crawford Likely to miss 4-to-6 weeks
Wed, Jul 24, 2024, 1:21 PM
Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said Wednesday that Crawford (finger) is expected to be sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports.
Analysis: Crawford fractured his right pinkie finger when he was hit by a pitch in Monday's game against the Angels. According to Jen Mueller of Root Sports Northwest, Crawford won't require surgery, but he'll need to wear a protective brace over his injured hand for the next couple of weeks and will need significant down time while the finger heals. The Mariners have used Dylan Moore at shortstop in both of their two games without Crawford, and Moore should continue to hold down the position for the next several weeks.
Dominic Canzone
Dominic Canzone Trending toward mid-August return
Wed, Jul 24, 2024, 1:15 PM
Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said Wednesday that Canzone (adductor) is expected to return from the 10-day injured list around the middle of August, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports.
Analysis: The target return date Hollander offered up more or less aligns with comments from manager Scott Servais over the weekend, when the skipper said Canzone was a couple weeks away from starting a rehab assignment. Canzone has been on the shelf since July 10 with a right adductor strain, an injury he sustained three days earlier while making a diving catch against the Blue Jays. Victor Robles had been seeing reps in right field following Canzone's placement on the shelf, but with Robles likely to be needed in center field more frequently after Julio Rodriguez (ankle) landed on the IL on Tuesday, Mitch Haniger and Cade Marlowe look to be the main candidates to pick up starts in right.
Mitch Haniger
Mitch Haniger Playing time increasing
Wed, Jul 24, 2024, 12:08 PM
Haniger will start in right field and bat fifth in Wednesday's game against the Angels.
Analysis: Haniger will pick up his fourth start in five games, with two coming against lefties and two coming against righties. The 33-year-old has gone 1-for-7 with five strikeouts and two walks since the All-Star break and is holding down a career-worst .615 OPS on the season, but he could nonetheless be in store for an uptick in playing time while the Mariners are down three regulars due to injury (Julio Rodriguez, J.P. Crawford and Dominic Canzone) in addition to recently moving struggling everyday first baseman Ty France off the 40-man roster.
Dylan Moore
Dylan Moore Settling in at shortstop
Wed, Jul 24, 2024, 12:04 PM
Moore will start at shortstop and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Angels.
Analysis: Moore will make a fifth consecutive start and his second straight at shortstop, which will likely be his primary home for the foreseeable future while J.P. Crawford is on the shelf with a fractured hand. Though his 28.7 percent strikeout rate has played a major part in suppressing his batting average (.206), Moore brings an intriguing blend of pop and speed to the table. Despite not being a full-time player throughout the season, Moore has already tallied eight home runs and 17 stolen bases over his 286 plate appearances.
Mitch Garver
Mitch Garver Losing playing time
Wed, Jul 24, 2024, 11:56 AM
Garver is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Angels.
Analysis: Garver is in the midst of a rough stretch at the plate, having gone hitless with eight strikeouts in his last five starts and 2-for-29 with a 32.4 percent strikeout rate over his past eight games. The ongoing slump looks to have cost him a regular spot in the lineup, as Garver will miss out Wednesday on the Mariners' third straight matchup with a right-handed pitcher (Griffin Canning). Jason Vosler will get a second straight start at designated hitter and may have overtaken Garver as the Mariners' preferred option for the time being.
Jason Vosler
Jason Vosler Productive in team debut
Wed, Jul 24, 2024, 10:24 AM
Vosler started at designated hitter in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Angels and went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run.
Analysis: The new arrival delivered the only extra-base hit for the Mariners on another anemic night for the team's offense. Vosler, along with fellow Triple-A callups Tyler Locklear and Cade Marlowe, was one of three new faces in Seattle's lineup Tuesday, and it remains to be seen if he'll be able to carve out a regular role for the short term while the team deals with the absences of Julio Rodriguez (ankle) and J.P. Crawford (finger).
Cade Marlowe
Cade Marlowe Reaches twice in '24 debut
Wed, Jul 24, 2024, 10:20 AM
Marlowe, called up from Triple-A Tacoma earlier in the day, went 1-for-2 with a walk in a loss to the Angels on Tuesday.
Analysis: Marlowe was making his 2024 big-league debut and started in right field as part of the domino effect of Julio Rodriguez's (ankle) placement on the injured list. The 27-year-old Marlowe posted a respectable .239/.330/.420 slash line across his first 100 major-league plate appearances a season ago, and he'd been having a decent campaign with Tacoma from an OBP perspective (.341) while also dazzling to the tune of 43 stolen bases. However, strikeouts have been a fairly persistent issue for Marlowe throughout his pro career, so it remains to be seen if that will continue to serve as a drag on his overall numbers against the highest level of competition.
Tyler Locklear
Tyler Locklear Singles in majors return
Wed, Jul 24, 2024, 10:15 AM
Locklear, summoned from Triple-A Tacoma earlier in the day, went 1-for-4 in a loss to the Angels on Tuesday.
Analysis: Locklear is expected to be given an extended look at first base after Ty Francewas jettisoned from the roster, and Locklear was able to get on safely in his first big-league plate appearance since June 20. Consistent contact was an Achilles' heel for Locklear -- as it is for many rookies -- during his first tenure with the Mariners this season, so the fact he struck out in two of his other three plate appearances Tuesday is a reminder he still has plenty of work to do in that regard.
Logan Gilbert
Logan Gilbert Hurt by five-run fifth inning
Wed, Jul 24, 2024, 8:57 AM
Gilbert (6-6) took the loss to the Angels on Tuesday, allowing five runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out eight over 6.2 innings.
Analysis: Gilbert retired the first 12 batters he faced before things completely unraveled in the fifth. He allowed three base hits in the inning, and two throwing errors played a part in the Angels tacking on all five of their runs in the frame. Still, it was his third straight start of more than six innings, a span during which he's compiled a 24:2 K:BB in 21.1 innings. Gilbert only has one win over his last five starts despite posting four quality starts over that timeframe. He now has a 2.72 ERA (fifth lowest in MLB) and an 0.86 WHIP (lowest in MLB) to complement a 132:26 K:BB in 139 innings and lines up to face the Red Sox on the road to begin next week.
