Cole Young
Cole Young Remains favorite for 2B job
Thu, Feb 5, 2026, 1:26 PM
Young "would have to struggle mightily to lose his grip on the second-base job," Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: New acquisition Brendan Donovan's primary position has been second base, but he will enter spring training slated to see most of his action in 2026 at third base. Young put up just a .607 OPS in 257 plate appearances during his rookie season, but he is only 22 and the Mariners remain high on his long-term potential. If Young stumbles, Seattle could consider shifting Donovan over to second base and installing Colt Emerson at the hot corner.
Brendan Donovan
Brendan Donovan Likely to play third base
Thu, Feb 5, 2026, 1:20 PM
The Mariners tentatively plan for Donovan to be their primary third baseman in 2026 but will move him around the diamond based on matchups, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Cole Young is the favorite to start at second base, though if Colt Emerson outplays him in spring training, the Mariners could go with Emerson at third base and Donovan at second. Donovan is also expected to bat leadoff against both righties and lefties. Acquired from the Cardinals in a trade earlier this week, Donovan sported a .287/.353/.422 batting line with 10 home runs and 32 doubles over 118 contests last season.
Emerson Hancock
Emerson Hancock Entering spring as starting pitcher
Mon, Feb 2, 2026, 4:39 PM
Hancock will enter spring training as a starting pitcher, Adam Jude of the Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Hancock was moved to the bullpen last August, but with Logan Evans (elbow) out for the season, the Mariners want to have Hancock available to start, if needed. If the Mariners' rotation is healthy on Opening Day, Hancock will likely shift back to a relief role. He allowed four runs (two earned) with a 4:1 K:BB over 8.2 innings as a reliever in 2025.
Brendan Donovan
Brendan Donovan Bound for Seattle
Mon, Feb 2, 2026, 4:01 PM
The Mariners acquired Donovan from the Cardinals on Monday as part of a three-team deal involving the Rays, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The Cardinals will receive Jurrangelo Cijntje and Tai Peete from the Mariners and Colton Ledbetter and a compensatory draft pick from the Rays. Ben Williamson will go to Tampa Bay. Second base is Donovan's primary position, but he is also an option to see playing time at third base for Seattle and is a good bet to bat leadoff. Donovan slashed .287/.353/.422 with 10 homers over 118 contests for the Cardinals in 2025 and is under team control through the 2027 campaign.
Luke Raley
Luke Raley Expected to start versus righties
Mon, Feb 2, 2026, 3:46 PM
Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said Sunday that he expects Raley to start against most right-hander this season, Adam Jude of the Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Hollander does not anticipate a "hardcore platoon" in right field and designated hitter, but as a "baseline," he expects left-handed hitters Raley and Dominic Canzone to play against most righties and right-handed hitters Victor Robles and Rob Refsnyder to start versus most lefties. Raley collected a disappointing .202/.319/.311 batting line during the 2025 regular season, but he slashed .242/.333/.453 versus right-handers.
Victor Robles
Victor Robles Likely stuck in short-side platoon
Mon, Feb 2, 2026, 3:33 PM
Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said Sunday that, "as a baseline," he expects Luke Raley and Dominic Canzone to start against right-handers and Rob Refsnyder and Robles to start versus lefties, Adam Jude of the Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Hollander does not believe the team will employ a "hardcore platoon" in right field and at designated hitter, but as a general rule, the left-handed hitting Raley and Canzone will start most days versus righties and the left-handed hitting Refsnyder and Robles will be in there against southpaws. Robles missed much of the 2025 season with a dislocated shoulder, and when healthy, he had just an 84 wRC+ in the regular season versus righties.
Logan Evans
Logan Evans Out for season after UCL surgery
Fri, Jan 30, 2026, 3:34 PM
Evans underwent UCL reconstruction surgery with an internal brace Jan. 23 on his right elbow.
Analysis: Evans missed several weeks during the second half of last season with right elbow inflammation, so it's possible he had UCL damage for a while that was only recently discovered. He will miss the entire 2026 season and, given the timing of the procedure, could get a late start to the 2027 campaign, as well. Evans had been likely to open the upcoming season at Triple-A Tacoma, but his absence is a blow to the Mariners' pitching depth. The 24-year-old posted a 4.32 ERA and 59:31 K:BB over 81.1 innings covering 15 starts and one relief outing last season.
Jhonathan Diaz
Jhonathan Diaz Outrighted to Triple-A
Wed, Jan 28, 2026, 2:47 PM
The Mariners outrighted Diaz to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday.
Analysis: Diaz was removed from the Mariners' 40-man roster last week but will remain in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. The left-hander has collected a 4.66 ERA and 33:27 K:BB over 46.1 frames covering parts of five seasons at the major-league level.
Jackson Kowar
Jackson Kowar Removed from 40-man
Tue, Jan 27, 2026, 6:34 PM
The Mariners designated Kowar (shoulder) for assignment Tuesday.
Analysis: The 29-year-old righty will give up his place on Seattle's 40-man roster for Jhonny Pereda, who was acquired from the Twins on Tuesday. Kowar made 15 regular-season appearances for the Mariners in 2025 and finished the year with a 4.24 ERA and 1.24 WHIP through 17 frames before a right shoulder impingement ended his season in mid-August.
Jhonny Pereda
Jhonny Pereda Traded to Seattle
Tue, Jan 27, 2026, 6:27 PM
The Twins traded Pereda to the Mariners on Tuesday in exchange for cash.
Analysis: The Twins DFA'd Pereda on Friday after signing Victor Caratini, but the former will reclaim a 40-man roster spot now that he's been dealt to the M's. He won't take playing time away from Cal Raleigh, but Pereda could provide some quality organizational depth after slashing .308/.422/.465 across 192 Triple-A plate appearances last year.
Bryce Miller
Bryce Miller Adds 12 pounds over offseason
Mon, Jan 26, 2026, 4:19 PM
Miller has added 12 pounds over the offseason and touched 98.3 mph during a recent throwing session, he posted on his X account Jan. 16.
Analysis: Miller missed time on two separate occasions during the 2025 season due to a bone spur in his right elbow, though he returned to pitch down the stretch of the regular season and playoffs. The righty received a platelet-rich plasma injection for his elbow in June and was reportedly considering getting another injection this offseason, though it's unclear whether he wound up receiving one. Either way, Miller appears poised to enter spring training without restrictions, but he will be a health risk in 2026 and is coming off a 2025 campaign that saw him collect a 5.68 ERA and 74:34 K:BB over 90.1 regular-season innings.
Jhonathan Diaz
Jhonathan Diaz Booted from 40-man roster
Fri, Jan 23, 2026, 5:44 PM
The Mariners designated Diaz for assignment Friday, Adam Jude of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: With Cooper Criswell coming over from the Mets in a trade, Diaz will give up his place on the Mariners' 40-man roster. The 29-year-old southpaw made just one appearance with the Mariners near the start of the 2025 regular season, during which he gave up one hit and struck out one batter over 1.1 innings. He spent the rest of the season at Triple-A Tacoma and turned in a 4.15 ERA and 1.32 WHIP across 138.2 frames.
Cooper Criswell
Cooper Criswell Bound for Seattle
Fri, Jan 23, 2026, 5:01 PM
The Mets traded Criswell to the Mariners on Friday in exchange for cash, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The 29-year-old was DFA'd by the Mets on Wednesday following the team's acquisition of Freddy Peralta and Tobias Myers, but Criswell will recapture a 40-man spot upon moving to Seattle. He posted a 3.57 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 17.2 regular-season innings with the Red Sox in 2025 and will compete for a spot in the Mariners' bullpen during spring training.
Dane Dunning
Dane Dunning Nets MiLB deal with Mariners
Thu, Jan 22, 2026, 4:02 PM
The Mariners signed Dunning to a minor-league contract Thursday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Dunning had to settle for a minor-league deal after posting a 6.97 ERA and 21:7 K:BB over 20.2 innings between Texas and Atlanta in 2025. The 31-year-old could be useful swingman depth for Seattle at Triple-A Tacoma.
Bryce Miller
Bryce Miller Avoids arbitration with Seattle
Tue, Jan 20, 2026, 3:42 PM
The Mariners and Miller avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.4375 million contract Tuesday. The deal includes a $6.075 million club option for 2027.
Analysis: The two sides were unable to come to an agreement prior to arbitration figures being exchanged earlier this month, but they've now reached a deal to avoid a hearing. Miller posted a 5.68 ERA and 74:34 K:BB over 90.1 regular-season innings in 2025 and missed time with elbow issues on two occasions. The righty returned to pitch down the stretch of the regular season and playoffs, collecting a 2.51 ERA and 9:5 K:BB over 14.1 frames covering three postseason starts. Miller appears poised to enter spring training with a clean bill of health.
Samad Taylor
Samad Taylor Loses rosters spot
Thu, Jan 15, 2026, 10:40 PM
Taylor was designated for assignment by the Mariners on Thursday.
Analysis: The Mariners acquired Yosver Zulueta from the Reds on Thursday, which created a need for a spot on the 40-man roster. Taylor became the odd man out. Taylor has primarily been stuck at Triple-A for the last four seasons, though he has picked up 83 plate appearances in the majors in that span.
Yosver Zulueta
Yosver Zulueta Headed to Seattle
Thu, Jan 15, 2026, 5:46 PM
The Reds traded Zulueta to the Mariners on Thursday, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.
Analysis: After being DFA'd by the Reds earlier in the day, Zulueta will recapture a 40-man roster spot upon joining his new club. The 27-year-old righty allowed five earned runs in just 7.1 regular-season innings with the Reds during 2025 but finished with a 3.28 ERA and 1.15 WHIP through 60.1 frames in Triple-A. He's likely ticketed to begin the 2026 campaign at Triple-A Tacoma.
Gabe Speier
Gabe Speier Reaches deal
Thu, Jan 8, 2026, 7:48 PM
Speier signed a one-year contract with the Mariners to avoid arbitration Thursday,Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Terms of the deal aren't yet known, though Speier earned $845,000 in 2025 -- his first year of arbitration eligibility. He's coming off of an excellent season, maintaining a 2.61 ERA and 0.87 WHIP across 62.0 frames while also earning 24 holds.
Luke Raley
Luke Raley Agrees to terms with Mariners
Thu, Jan 8, 2026, 7:40 PM
Raley signed a one-year contract with the Mariners on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: This marked Raley's first year of arbitration eligibility. He took a significant step back in 2025, logging only a .630 OSP across 219 plate appearances while also dealing with oblique and back injuries. Raley projects to serve in a bench role to begin 2026.
Logan Gilbert
Logan Gilbert Gets nearly $11 million
Thu, Jan 8, 2026, 7:31 PM
Gilbert and the Mariners agreed to a one-year, $10.9 million contract to avoid arbitration Thursday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: This marked Gilbert's third year of arbitration eligibility and he's set to earn about a $3.4 million raise from 2025. He turned in another very strong season, maintaining a 3.44 ERA and 1.03 WHIP across 131 frames during the regular season.
