Nick Castellanos
Nick Castellanos Connects for first Padre homer
Wed, Apr 29, 2026, 11:00 PM
Castellanos went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run, a walk and an additional run scored in Wednesday's 5-4 loss to the Cubs.
Analysis: Castellanos delivered a key swing, launching a two-run homer to tie the game in the fifth inning for his first home run as a member of San Diego. The veteran outfielder had been off to a slow start, entering the game batting just .151 with seven RBI across 56 plate appearances. While the overall numbers remain underwhelming, the homer offers a potential sign that Castellanos is beginning to find his timing at the plate after a difficult start.
Matt Waldron
Matt Waldron Allows three runs in no-decision
Wed, Apr 29, 2026, 10:49 PM
Waldron did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Cubs, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out one over five innings.
Analysis: Waldron labored early, throwing 41 pitches over the first two innings and allowing five baserunners, though he limited the damage to one run on an RBI single from Miguel Amaya. The right-hander later gave up a two-run homer to Pete Crow-Armstrong in the fourth but overall turned in a more stable outing compared to his first two starts, in which he allowed six earned runs in each. While it was a step forward for the knuckleballer, his season numbers remain inflated, as he now holds a 9.88 ERA, 1.98 WHIP and an 8:5 K:BB across 13.2 innings. Waldron could be in line for a more favorable outing next time against a Giants lineup that has struggled to score runs this season.
Griffin Canning
Griffin Canning Will make another rehab start
Wed, Apr 29, 2026, 2:30 PM
Canning (Achilles) will make at least one more rehab start with Triple-A El Paso, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Analysis: Canning's last rehab start was his best, as he struck out four while allowing one one unearned run over five innings Tuesday. The right-hander threw 68 pitches in that outing and will continue to get stretched out before joining the Padres' rotation. Canning is coming back from Achilles surgery.
Luis Campusano
Luis Campusano Playing time trending up
Wed, Apr 29, 2026, 1:58 PM
Campusano will start at catcher and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Cubs.
Analysis: Campusano will stick behind the plate for the third time in four games while Freddy Fermin sits. Though Fermin has operated as the Padres' No. 1 catcher for much of the season, Campusano may be starting to turn the position into more of a timeshare arrangement due to his hot hitting. Since the calendar flipped to April, Campusano has hit .385 with three home runs, seven doubles, 10 RBI and eight runs over 13 games.
Freddy Fermin
Freddy Fermin Yielding to Campusano again
Wed, Apr 29, 2026, 12:09 PM
Fermin is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Cubs.
Analysis: Luis Campusano started Tuesday night at catcher and will be back behind the plate for Wednesday's matinee. It's been a nearly even split in playing time at catcher this season between Fermin (16 starts) and Campusano (14 starts).
Gavin Sheets
Gavin Sheets Taking seat Wednesday
Wed, Apr 29, 2026, 12:05 PM
Sheets is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs.
Analysis: Right-hander Jameson Taillon is toeing the slab for the Cubs, and this marks just the second time this season that the left-handed-swinging Sheets is out of the lineup versus a righty. Manny Machado is getting a start at designated hitter, and Ty France will be at first base for the Padres in Wednesday's rubber match.
Ramon Laureano
Ramon Laureano Day off amid slump
Wed, Apr 29, 2026, 12:00 PM
Laureano is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Cubs.
Analysis: Laureano is in a funk at the plate, having posted a .515 OPS and a 39.6 percent strikeout rate across his last 10 contests. He'll get a day to regroup Wednesday while Nick Castellanos patrols left field for the Padres.
Manny Machado
Manny Machado Back in lineup at designated hitter
Wed, Apr 29, 2026, 11:56 AM
Machado (leg) will start at designated hitter and bat third in Wednesday's game against the Cubs.
Analysis: Machado didn't play Tuesday after exiting Monday's contest when he tweaked his leg. He's feeling well enough to DH in Wednesday's series finale and could return to third base this weekend. Miguel Andujar will play the hot corner Wednesday for the Padres.
Putting up good numbers in Double-A
Tue, Apr 28, 2026, 9:39 PM
Through 16 games with Double-A San Antonio, Salas is slashing .296/.377/.481 with two home runs, four doubles, seven runs, nine RBI and three stolen bases.
Analysis: Salas lost some of his prospect shine last season when injuries limited to him to only 10 games (all with San Antonio), during which he batted just .188 with no long balls. However, he's turned things around at the plate to begin the 2026 campaign and is coming off a big week -- from April 18 to 25, he put up a 1.278 OPS with two homers, six RBI and a stolen base over six contests. Salas won't turn 20 until June 1, and he still ranks as one of San Diego's top prospects.
Miguel Andujar
Miguel Andujar Idle Tuesday
Tue, Apr 28, 2026, 4:33 PM
Andujar isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cubs.
Analysis: Andujar has hit safely in each of his last four starts but will grab a seat on the bench to begin Tuesday's contest. Gavin Sheets will work as San Diego's designated hitter instead, and Ty France will get the nod at first base.
Manny Machado
Manny Machado Out of Tuesday's lineup
Tue, Apr 28, 2026, 4:30 PM
Machado (leg) isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cubs.
Analysis: Machado made an early exit from Monday's game due to a leg injury, and although manager Craig Stammen said after the game that the 33-year-old third baseman is fine, the Padres will keep him on the bench Tuesday as a precaution. Jake Cronenworth will make his first career start at the hot corner as a result, moving Fernando Tatis to second base and giving Bryce Johnson a start in right field.
Freddy Fermin
Freddy Fermin Taking seat Tuesday
Tue, Apr 28, 2026, 4:26 PM
Fermin isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cubs.
Analysis: Fermin will step out of the lineup Tuesday after going 1-for-11 with an RBI and a run scored across his last three starts. Luis Campusano will handle catching duties instead and bat seventh.
Gavin Sheets
Gavin Sheets Goes deep Monday
Tue, Apr 28, 2026, 1:26 PM
Sheets slugged a solo home run in his only plate appearance during Monday's 9-7 win against the Cubs.
Analysis: Sheets began the game on the bench but entered in the seventh inning after Manny Machado was lifted as a precaution due to concern about an unspecified injury. Sheets made the most of his lone plate appearance, slugging a solo homer to right field in the bottom of the eighth frame. The long ball extended his modest hitting streak to four games, and Sheets has gone 4-for-11 with a pair of homers, three runs and six RBI during that span.
Manny Machado
Manny Machado Exits as precaution
Tue, Apr 28, 2026, 12:53 PM
Manager Craig Stammen said after Monday's game against the Cubs that Machado is "fine" and was removed from the contest as a precautionary move, Marty Caswell of Foul Territyory reports.
Analysis: The veteran third baseman came out of the batter's box awkwardly and wasn't moving well down the line in the sixth inning Monday, so the Padres elected to lift him from the contest after he went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored. Stammen didn't mention a specific injury but indicated Machado's lower half wasn't feeling great after a couple of slides into second base. He should be considered day-to-day heading into Tuesday's matchup with Chicago.
David Morgan
David Morgan Hammered by D-backs on Sunday
Mon, Apr 27, 2026, 10:42 AM
Morgan retired only one batter and gave up four runs on four hits in a relief outing Sunday versus Arizona.
Analysis: Michael King started and pitched six strong frames for the Padres before turning the ball over to Morgan in the seventh. That didn't go well for San Diego, as Morgan yielded four straight one-out hits -- three singles and a grand slam -- to allow Arizona to cut its deficit from five runs to one. The Diamondbacks ended up scoring twice more in the inning to take a lead they never relinquished. Morgan began the campaign well with 10.1 consecutive scoreless frames despite a 10:7 K:BB over his first seven outings, but he's since given up at least two runs in each of his past three appearances. That's pushed his season numbers to a 5.68 ERA and 2.05 WHIP through 12.2 innings.
Sung-Mun Song
Sung-Mun Song Sent back to minors
Mon, Apr 27, 2026, 8:35 AM
The Padres optioned Song to Triple-A El Paso on Monday.
Analysis: Song was up as the 27th man during the Mexico City Series against the Diamondbacks. He made his major-league debut as a pinch runner Sunday but did not receive a plate appearance. Song returns to El Paso, where he's slashed .293/.369/.320 in 20 games.
Luis Campusano
Luis Campusano Tallies two extra-base hits
Sun, Apr 26, 2026, 8:42 PM
Campusano went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a double and an additional RBI in Sunday's loss to the Diamondbacks.
Analysis: Campusano drew the start behind the plate to wrap up the weekend in Mexico City, doubling and homering Sunday after slugging two doubles and a homer in his previous start Wednesday against the Rockies. After going hitless in 10 games at the big-league level in 2025, the 27-year-old has been on fire to begin 2026, slashing .350/.395/.750 with three homers, nine RBI and eight runs through 14 games. Freddy Fermin is the lead catcher and is more well regarded on the defensive side, but Campusano's continued success should earn him opportunities in the lineup.
Manny Machado
Manny Machado Blasts two homers in loss
Sun, Apr 26, 2026, 8:27 PM
Machado went 2-for-5 with two homers and five RBI in Sunday's 12-7 loss to the Diamondbacks.
Analysis: Machado took advantage of the hitter-friendly backdrop at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu, launching a two-run homer in the third inning before adding a three-run shot in the fifth frame, both off Ryne Nelson. Although the Padres ultimately lost, it was a much-needed offensive outburst for the third baseman, who entered Sunday's contest with a .615 OPS. The 33-year-old is now slashing .209/.327/.363 with four homers, 16 RBI and 15 runs through 26 games in 2026.
Michael King
Michael King Strong showing in no-decision
Sun, Apr 26, 2026, 8:09 PM
King did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk over six innings against the Diamondbacks. He struck out eight.
Analysis: King was mostly excellent, striking out a season-high eight batters while maintaining strong command, with the only damage coming on solo homers by Jose Fernandez and Ildemaro Vargas in the fifth and sixth innings. A bullpen collapse prevented King from earning his fourth win of the season, but it was another strong outing for the right-hander, who owns a 2.41 ERA and 1.04 WHIP with a 34:15 K:BB across 33.2 innings (six starts). His next start is projected for Saturday against the White Sox.
German Marquez
German Marquez Overcomes tough frame for win
Sat, Apr 25, 2026, 8:49 PM
Marquez (3-1) earned the win against the Diamondbacks on Saturday, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk with two strikeouts over six innings.
Analysis: Marquez surrendered four runs in the second inning but rebounded with four scoreless frames to finish strong. Through five starts, the 31-year-old has alternated between three four-run outings and two scoreless efforts. Overall, he owns a 4.38 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 17:7 K:BB across 24.2 innings and lines up for a home matchup against the White Sox next weekend.
