Ramon Laureano
Ramon Laureano Absent from starting lineup
Mon, Aug 11, 2025, 4:49 PM
Laureano is not in the Padres' starting lineup against the Giants on Monday.
Analysis: With Laureano on the bench, Gavin Sheets will get the start in left field and bat seventh. In nine games since being acquired by the Padres, Laureano has gone 10-for-37 (.270) with two triples, one home run and eight RBI.
Dylan Cease
Dylan Cease Wins again
Sun, Aug 10, 2025, 9:08 PM
Cease (5-10) picked up the win Sunday against Boston, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks across six innings. He struck out seven.
Analysis: Cease notched his first quality start in his last eight appearances, shutting down the Red Sox en route to a victory. The 29-year-old has now taken the win in back-to-back starts for the first time in 2025. In 24 outings this season, Cease has a 4.52 ERA and a 169:50 K:BB over 129.1 innings. He's tentatively scheduled to face the Dodgers next time out.
Fernando Tatis Jr.
Fernando Tatis Jr. Scores twice in win
Sun, Aug 10, 2025, 9:08 PM
Tatis went 2-for-3 with an RBI single and two runs scored during Sunday's 6-2 win over the Red Sox.
Analysis: Tatis recorded a second straight multi-hit game, and he reached in three of his four plate appearances Sunday. The 26-year-old came into the contest 4-for-31 (.129) with four runs scored and two stolen bases in August. He's slashing .262/.365/.431 on the year.
Jose Iglesias
Jose Iglesias Losing out on playing time
Sun, Aug 10, 2025, 2:56 PM
Iglesias is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox.
Analysis: Iglesias has predictably seen his playing time fall by the wayside since the July 31 trade deadline, when the Padres added three everyday players to the mix in catcher Freddy Fermin, first baseman/designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn and outfielder Ramon Laureano. Since the three new arrivals were all available to play for the Padres beginning Aug. 2, Iglesias has started in just two of eight games.
Sean Reynolds
Sean Reynolds Sent down to El Paso
Sat, Aug 9, 2025, 2:15 PM
The Padres optioned Reynolds to Triple-A El Paso on Saturday.
Analysis: The 27-year-old righty will lose his place on the big-league pitching staff due to Michael King (shoulder) returning from the injured list Saturday. Reynolds carries a 5.55 ERA and 1.32 WHIP through 24.1 innings in the majors this season but remains an option to return to San Diego down the stretch whenever the Friars need a fresh bullpen arm.
Michael King
Michael King Activated ahead of start
Sat, Aug 9, 2025, 2:13 PM
The Padres reinstated King (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list prior to his start Saturday against the Red Sox.
Analysis: King landed on the injured list in late May with a right shoulder thoracic nerve impingement. He resumed pitching in minor-league games last weekend but was met with struggles, coughing up six earned runs on four hits, a walk and an HBP while striking out five batters over 3.1 innings. Despite his poor results, the Padres liked what they saw from him enough to feel comfortable activating him after just one rehab outing. He'll now be welcomed back to the majors by a Red Sox offense that has posted a .734 OPS since the All-Star break. Sean Reynolds was optioned to Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move.
Nick Pivetta
Nick Pivetta Steamrolled by former club
Sat, Aug 9, 2025, 9:13 AM
Pivetta (11-4) took the loss Friday, giving up five runs on five hits and three walks over six innings as the Padres were routed 10-2 by the Red Sox. He struck out three.
Analysis: Facing the team he spent the last four-plus seasons with prior to signing with San Diego this past winter, Pivetta kept Boston off the board through three innings before the wheels began to come off in the fourth. Despite the stumble, the veteran right-hander still lasted at least six innings for the fifth straight outing and the sixth time in seven starts since the beginning of July, a stretch in which he's delivered a 1.78 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 48:11 K:BB through 50.2 innings. Pivetta will look to bounce back in his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in San Francisco.
Michael King
Michael King Set to rejoin rotation Saturday
Thu, Aug 7, 2025, 8:57 AM
King (shoulder) is slated to return from the 60-day injured list to start Saturday's game versus the Red Sox at Petco Park, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: King hasn't pitched for the Padres since May 18 following a lengthy recovery from a right shoulder thoracic nerve impingement, but he looks poised to come off the IL after making just one rehab start. In that outing this past Sunday with Triple-A El Paso, King struck out five and allowed six earned runs on four hits and one walk over 3.1 innings, but more importantly, he built up to 61 pitches and came out of the rehab appearance feeling healthy. Per Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune, Padres manager Mike Shildt hinted Tuesday that King could rejoin the big-league rotation this weekend, and San Diego seems to have signed off on the righty's return after he completed a between-starts bullpen session without issue. King is set to take over the rotation spot that previously belonged to trade-deadline pickup JP Sears, who was optioned to Triple-A on Tuesday.
Ryan O'Hearn
Ryan O'Hearn Belts clutch homer Wednesday
Thu, Aug 7, 2025, 2:27 AM
O'Hearn went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a 3-2 win against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
Analysis: O'Hearn was hitless in his first three at-bats, but he made up for that in a big way in his final plate appearance, belting a solo homer in the ninth inning to tie the score 2-2. The long ball was his first -- and just his second hit overall in 13 at-bats -- since he joined the Padres at the trade deadline. O'Hearn looks like he may not be given an everyday role with his new club, as he's started in just three of San Diego's six contests since getting dealt.
Xander Bogaerts
Xander Bogaerts Goes deep again Wednesday
Thu, Aug 7, 2025, 2:23 AM
Bogaerts went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, an additional run and a double in Wednesday's 3-2 victory versus Arizona.
Analysis: Bogaerts put the Padres on the board for the first time with a 421-foot solo shot to left field in the seventh inning. The long ball was his second in his past two games and fourth through 19 contests since the All-Star break after he went deep just five times across 95 games in the first half. Bogaerts has five multi-hit performances over his past 12 contests and is batting an even .300 (15-for-50) during that span.
Mason Miller
Mason Miller Gets first save as Padre
Thu, Aug 7, 2025, 2:06 AM
Miller earned a save against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, striking out three batters and walking one over one hitless and scoreless inning.
Analysis: The Padres rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth frame to take their first lead, and Miller got the call to protect a one-run lead in the bottom of the inning. He issued a two-out walk but overpowered the other three batters he faced, striking them out on a combined nine pitches. Miller's first two outings with the Padres weren't great -- he allowed two runs on three hits over two frames -- but his dominance Wednesday emphasizes what a tremendous impact he could make on the team's already great bullpen. That said, Miller's fantasy value actually took a hit with his move to San Diego, as he probably isn't going to be the full-time closer given the presence of All-Star Robert Suarez. Though Miller closed Wednesday, that may have been at least partly due to Suarez tossing 1.2 frames one day earlier.
Fernando Tatis Jr.
Fernando Tatis Jr. Not starting Wednesday
Wed, Aug 6, 2025, 6:30 PM
Tatis isn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks.
Analysis: Tatis will get a rare off day Wednesday after going just 2-for-21 with an RBI and three runs scored through the first five games of August. While he regroups, Ryan O'Hearn will cover right field and bat fifth.
Tyler Wade
Tyler Wade Outrighted to Triple-A
Wed, Aug 6, 2025, 3:41 PM
The Padres outrighted Wade to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.
Analysis: Wade has the ability to decline the outright assignment and elect free agency, but it's not clear whether he'll exercise that right or remain in the organization. The utility player has slashed .206/.309/.252 through 127 plate appearances in the big leagues this season.
Freddy Fermin
Freddy Fermin Day off Tuesday
Tue, Aug 5, 2025, 5:56 PM
Fermin isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game versus Arizona.
Analysis: After going 3-for-9 with two RBI and a run scored through his first three games as a Padre, Fermin will get a breather Tuesday while Elias Diaz starts behind the plate and bats ninth.
Ryan O'Hearn
Ryan O'Hearn Idle Tuesday
Tue, Aug 5, 2025, 5:55 PM
O'Hearn isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks.
Analysis: O'Hearn will retreat to the bench for a second consecutive game Tuesday, even with right-hander Ryne Nelson set to start on the bump for Arizona. Luis Arraez will start at first base for the Friars while O'Hearn sits, and Manny Machado will serve as the DH with Jose Iglesias at third.
JP Sears
JP Sears Optioned after rough outing
Tue, Aug 5, 2025, 5:43 PM
The Padres optioned Sears to Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday.
Analysis: Sears did not impress for his new team in Monday's loss versus the Diamondbacks, in which he surrendered five runs across five innings. With the starter's demotion Tuesday, the Padres recalled reliever Sean Reynolds.
Sean Reynolds
Sean Reynolds Recalled again
Tue, Aug 5, 2025, 5:34 PM
The Padres recalled Reynolds from Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday.
Analysis: JP Sears was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday in a corresponding move. Reynolds made three appearances with Triple-A El Paso after being optioned June 30. He allowed no runs with a 4:2 K:BB across 2.2 innings, and he also earned a save in his last game Aug. 2.
Nestor Cortes
Nestor Cortes Debuting Wednesday
Tue, Aug 5, 2025, 9:36 AM
Cortes (elbow) is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field.
Analysis: San Diego reinstated Cortes from the 60-day injured list Sunday, but he'll end up waiting a few days before entering the rotation as a replacement for Randy Vasquez, who was optioned to Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move. Acquired from the Brewers this past Thursday, Cortes made just two starts at the big-league level before landing on the IL on April 6 due to a left elbow strain. Before being traded, Cortes proved his health over the course of a four-start rehab assignment in July, during which he turned in a 1.00 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 18:3 K:BB in 18 innings. After building up to 93 pitches in his final rehab outing July 24, Cortes isn't expected to face a workload restriction Wednesday in his Padres debut.
Trenton Brooks
Trenton Brooks Outrighted to Triple-A
Mon, Aug 4, 2025, 5:40 PM
Brooks was outrighted to Triple-A El Paso on Monday after clearing waivers.
Analysis: Brooks lost his spot on the 40-man roster after the Padres acquired Ramon Laureano and Ryan O'Hearn from the Orioles on Thursday. Brooks will remain in San Diego in Triple-A, where he's slashing .313/.415/.585 with two steals, 13 home runs na d53 RBI in 265 plate appearances this season.
Ryan O'Hearn
Ryan O'Hearn Sitting Monday
Mon, Aug 4, 2025, 5:22 PM
O'Hearn is not in the Padres' starting lineup against the Diamondbacks on Monday.
Analysis: Even with the Diamondbacks sending right-hander Brandon Pfaadt to the mound, the left-hitting O'Hearn will begin Monday's game on the bench, with Luis Arraez starting at first base and Gavin Sheets serving as the designated hitter. O'Hearn has gone 1-for-8 in his first three games with the Padres.
