Randy Vasquez
Randy Vasquez Stumbles vs. Mets
Thu, Sep 18, 2025, 4:16 PM
Vasquez (5-7) took the loss Thursday against the Mets, allowing four runs on four hits and a walk across 2.1 innings. He struck out three.
Analysis: After turning in back-to-back quality starts in his previous two outings, Vasquez struggled Thursday, giving up a solo homer to Pete Alonso in the first inning before allowing another three runs before departing in the third. Through 125.2 innings this year, Vasquez sports a 3.94 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP and 74:50 K:BB. He'll look to get back on track in his next start, tentatively scheduled for next week at home against the Brewers.
Ramon Laureano
Ramon Laureano Belts 24th long ball
Thu, Sep 18, 2025, 9:43 AM
Laureano went 2-for-4 with a solo home run Wednesday in a 7-4 win against the Mets.
Analysis: Laureano capped the scoring in the contest with a solo shot to left field in the ninth inning. The veteran outfielder had been slumping coming into Wednesday with a .103 batting average (3-for-29) over his previous eight games. Laureano has still been very good overall since joining the Padres at the trade deadline, though, posting an .869 OPS with nine homers, 30 RBI, 24 runs and two stolen bases over 43 games.
Robert Suarez
Robert Suarez Earns save No. 39
Thu, Sep 18, 2025, 7:12 AM
Suarez earned the save in Wednesday's 7-4 win over the Mets, allowing a hit and a walk in a scoreless ninth inning.
Analysis: Tasked with protecting a three-run lead, Suarez worked around a leadoff single to Brett Baty and a two-out walk to Francisco Lindor, but he held firm to lock down the win for San Diego. The right-hander has been reliable in September, posting a 2.61 ERA, 0.68 WHIP and 12:2 K:BB across 10.1 innings, converting four consecutive saves in that stretch. The 34-year-old is now just one save away from becoming the fifth Padres closer ever to reach the 40-save milestone, and he sits only one behind Carlos Estevez for the MLB lead.
Ryan O'Hearn
Ryan O'Hearn Resting Wednesday
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 4:11 PM
O'Hearn is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets.
Analysis: O'Hearn will get a breather after he went just 3-for-26 (.115 average) while starting in each of the Padres' last seven games. With O'Hearn on the bench, Luis Arraez will slide over from second base to cover first base.
Freddy Fermin
Freddy Fermin Resting Wednesday
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 4:09 PM
Fermin is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets.
Analysis: He'll receive a breather after starting behind the dish the past two games while going 3-for-7 with a home run and two RBI. Elias Diaz will fill in for Fermin at catcher Wednesday.
Eguy Rosario
Eguy Rosario Moves past sports hernia
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 4:07 PM
Rosario (sports hernia) went 5-for-21 with two home runs, two walks, one stolen base, four RBI and four runs in five games for Double-A San Antonio after being activated from the 60-day injured list Sept. 9.
Analysis: After a rough start to the season at Triple-A El Paso, Rosario was assigned to the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on May 19. He had been playing regularly in the ACL for about two weeks before being shut down when he required surgery in June to address a sports hernia. Rosario was cleared to begin a rehab assignment at High-A Fort Wayne on Aug. 19 and then linked up with San Antonio for the tail end of the Texas League season.
Xander Bogaerts
Xander Bogaerts Could return this weekend
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 12:27 PM
Padres manager Mike Shildt said Tuesday that Bogaerts (foot) took part in workouts at the team's facility in Arizona over the previous two days and could return from the 10-day injured list for this weekend's series in Chicago versus the White Sox, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Analysis: Bogaerts was involved in a full range of baseball activities, as he did some running, fielded grounders at shortstop and hit against live pitching. Completing a running progression appears to be the final hurdle that Bogaerts will need to clear before being activated, with Shildt noting that the 32-year-old is sprinting at about 80-to-85 percent intensity at this point. Bogaerts has been on the IL since Aug. 29 due to a non-displaced fracture in his left foot.
Joe Musgrove
Joe Musgrove Completes 'up-down' bullpen session
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 12:22 PM
Musgrove (elbow) threw an "up-down" bullpen session at Citi Field on Tuesday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Analysis: Musgrove essentially completed a two-inning simulated game, albeit without facing hitters. He threw approximately 15 pitches, then rested for a bit before tossing another 15 pitches. The right-hander -- who underwent Tommy John surgery Oct. 11, 2024 -- remains hopeful that he'll be able to contribute out of the San Diego bullpen in the playoffs, though he's not on pace to be ready to go for the wild-card round. With that in mind, the Padres may need to make a deep postseason run for Musgrove to achieve his goal, and even in that scenario, he may not be trusted with pitching high-leverage innings coming off a major injury. The Padres' main focus remains in ensuring that Musgrove enters spring training at full health and is able to break camp as a member of the Opening Day rotation.
Nestor Cortes
Nestor Cortes Set to face hitters this weekend
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 12:14 PM
Cortes (biceps) is scheduled to face live hitters Friday at the Padres' facility in Arizona, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Analysis: Cortes has thrown multiple bullpen sessions since landing on the injured list Sept. 5 due to left biceps tendinitis and is now ready to take the next step in the recovery process by facing hitters. Assuming Friday's workout goes well, Cortes will likely be activated from the IL for the final week of the regular season. Cortes doesn't tentatively line up for a start next week, but with the likelihood that the Padres' playoff positioning will be solidified ahead of their final series next weekend versus the Diamondbacks, Acee speculates that Nick Pivetta won't be asked to start against Arizona. As a result, the Padres could turn to Cortes to make a 3-to-4-inning start or bulk-relief appearance at some point during the series.
Jackson Merrill
Jackson Merrill Homers in loss
Tue, Sep 16, 2025, 9:15 PM
Merrill went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double in Tuesday's loss to the Mets.
Analysis: Merrill continued his hot streak with a solo shot in the second inning Tuesday. It was his third straight game with a home run and fifth over his last nine contests, giving him 14 on the year. It's been a disappointing sophomore campaign for Merrill, who posted a .579 OPS from May 13 through the end of July. He's battled through multiple injuries this season, but the recent success has pushed his season OPS back up to .766 through 438 plate appearances.
Michael King
Michael King Crushed by Mets
Tue, Sep 16, 2025, 9:04 PM
King (4-3) yielded eight runs on 10 hits over three-plus innings Tuesday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Mets.
Analysis: King was cursed by the long ball Tuesday; he gave up four home runs in the short outing, including Brett Baty's two-run blast to cap off the Mets' five-run first inning. King gave up six total homers in his first 11 starts this season, but has now been taken deep six times in two appearances since returning from the injured list. He has not finished six innings in a start since May 6, and his season ERA climbed to 3.84 with a 69:20 K:BB over 65.2 innings. King is currently lined up for a road start against the White Sox this weekend.
Luis Arraez
Luis Arraez Back in action Tuesday
Tue, Sep 16, 2025, 3:01 PM
Arraez (head) is starting at second base and batting second Tuesday against the Mets.
Analysis: Arraez was held out of Sunday's starting nine after being struck in the head by an errant warmup throw Saturday, but he's good to go after Monday's team off day. The infielder has a .333/.375/.400 slash line through 12 games in September and has gone 7-for-17 over his past four contests.
Jason Adam
Jason Adam Out at least six months post-surgery
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 1:19 PM
Adam is expected to face a recovery timeline of 6-to-9 months after he underwent surgery Sept. 3 to address a ruptured left quadriceps tendon, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Adam sustained the season-ending injury during his relief appearance against the Orioles on Sept. 1, when he felt the quad pop while he tried to make a defensive play. Though his surgery seems to have gone off without a hitch, Adam's estimated recovery timeline suggests that he won't be ready to go for the start of spring training in February, and his availability for Opening Day could also be in question. The 34-year-old right-hander, who is under club control through 2026, was a first-time All-Star this season and accrued a 1.93 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 70:25 K:BB to go with eight wins and 30 holds over 65.1 innings before rupturing his quad.
Joe Musgrove
Joe Musgrove Holding out hope for 2025 return
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 1:10 PM
Musgrove (elbow) has continued to throw regular bullpen sessions since early August and remains hopeful to pitch for the Padres as a reliever during the postseason if San Diego makes a deep playoff run,
Analysis: Musgrove, who has been on the shelf all season while completing his recovery from Oct. 11, 2024 Tommy John surgery, had previously held the goal of pitching in a rehab game before the end of the minor-league season, but he's not far along in his throwing program for that to be a reality. A return during the postseason may not be realistic either, given that he has yet to resume facing hitters at this point in his rehab. On a positive note, Musgrove seems to have avoided any setbacks up to this point in the recovery process, so he should be ready to enter spring training with few restrictions, if any.
Nestor Cortes
Nestor Cortes Resumes mound work
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 1:02 PM
Cortes (biceps) was cleared to throw off a mound Saturday, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Cortes was moved to the injured list Sept. 5 after he experienced left biceps tendinitis coming out of his start two days earlier, but he's already begun to start throwing again following a brief shutdown period. The southpaw isn't on track to return from the IL later this week when first eligible, but he's holding out hope to contribute for the Padres at some point in the final week of the regular season. Cortes had been serving as the Padres' No. 5 starter prior to landing on the shelf, but it's unclear if he would immediately slot back into the rotation if he's activated next week.
Xander Bogaerts
Xander Bogaerts Gearing up for return in final week
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 12:59 PM
Manager Mike Shildt said that Bogaerts (foot) took ground balls, tracked live pitches and took swings in the batting cage during a workout Saturday and could continue his rehab program at the Padres' facility in Arizona during the upcoming week, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The Padres placed Bogaerts on the 10-day injured list Aug. 29 due to a non-displaced fracture in his left foot, but the veteran infielder is progressing well in his recovery and is targeting a return to the lineup during the final week of the regular season. While Bogaerts has been shelved, the Padres have prioritized offense over defense of late, as Jake Cronenworth and Luis Arraez (head) have been seeing more starts at shortstop and second base, respectively, in order to open up a regular spot in the lineup at designated hitter for Gavin Sheets.
Fernando Tatis Jr.
Fernando Tatis Jr. Reaches 30-steal mark
Sun, Sep 14, 2025, 6:40 PM
Tatis went 3-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base and three runs scored in Sunday's 9-6 win over the Rockies.
Analysis: Tatis did his part in setting the table with one of the Padres' five multi-hit efforts in this contest. He's also been using his speed more lately, logging three steals over his last seven games. That helped him set a new career high with 30 thefts on 36 attempts this season. The outfielder has added a strong .264/.367/.438 slash line with 22 home runs, 65 RBI and 102 runs scored across 146 games.
Jackson Merrill
Jackson Merrill Goes yard again Sunday
Sun, Sep 14, 2025, 6:39 PM
Merrill went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run and a second run scored in Sunday's 9-6 win over the Rockies.
Analysis: Merrill stretched the Padres' lead to 6-0 with his blast in the second inning. He homered in three of four games versus the Rockies during this weekend series and is up to 13 long balls on the year. The 22-year-old outfielder has added a .259/.314/.439 slash line, 60 RBI, 50 runs scored and a stolen base over 104 contests. Merrill will look to carry his momentum on the road as the Padres face the Mets for a three-game series beginning Tuesday.
Robert Suarez
Robert Suarez Converts 38th save
Sun, Sep 14, 2025, 6:36 PM
Suarez struck out three without allowing a hit or a walk in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Sunday's 9-6 win over the Rockies.
Analysis: One batter reached on an error, but Suarez was able to overcome that to log his 38th save of the year. The right-hander has posted an 11:1 K:BB over 8.1 innings in September, though he has allowed three runs, including two home runs in that span. Suarez is now at a 3.06 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 70:15 K:BB through 64.2 innings this season and remains firmly in control of the closer role for the Padres.
Yu Darvish
Yu Darvish Collects fourth win
Sun, Sep 14, 2025, 6:34 PM
Darvish (4-5) allowed three runs on four hits and struck out five without walking a batter over five-plus innings to earn the win over the Rockies on Sunday.
Analysis: Darvish had a sharp start through five frames, but he put on a pair of runners in the sixth, and Jeremiah Estrada wasn't able to prevent them from scoring. It was still a positive, as Darvish earned his first win since Aug. 22 versus the Dodgers, though he's allowed at least three runs in five of his last six outings. Darvish is at a 5.63 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 60:17 K:BB through 62.1 innings across 13 starts this season. His next outing is projected to be a road start versus the White Sox.
