Jason Adam
Jason Adam Tracking toward avoiding IL stint
Fri, Feb 20, 2026, 11:41 AM
Adam (quadriceps) "remains on track to potentially be ready" for Opening Day, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Analysis: Adam's declaration last week on 97.3 The Fan that he thought he could be ready for the opener seemed more like overzealous injury optimism from a player which can be common at this time of year. However, it appears he does indeed have a chance to avoid a stint on the injured list, with the reliever noting Friday of the Padres' medical staff that, "I think they're on board." Recovering from left quadriceps tendon repair surgery, Adam has been throwing bullpens since early December and recently began change-of-direction drills and fielding his position while remaining stationary. The veteran reliever is slated to work as one of closer Mason Miller's main setup men.
Yuki Matsui
Yuki Matsui Suffers groin injury
Fri, Feb 20, 2026, 11:25 AM
Padres manager Craig Stammen said Friday that Matsui halted a live batting practice session short Thursday due to left groin tightness, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Analysis: Matsui is now questionable to participate in the World Baseball Classic for Team Japan, though he could resume playing catch as soon as Saturday. The left-hander has been a solid contributor in his first two regular seasons with the Padres, posting a 3.86 ERA and 130:60 K:BB over 126 innings.
Randy Vasquez
Randy Vasquez Has 'inside track' for rotation
Thu, Feb 19, 2026, 10:19 AM
Padres manager Craig Stammen said recently that Vasquez has an "inside track" to one of the spots in the rotation, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Nick Pivetta, Michael King and Joe Musgrove are locked into the rotation, and Vasquez is likely to join them after making 28 appearances (26 starts) in 2025. While Vasquez finished with a 3.84 ERA over 133.2 regular-season innings, his 78:52 K:BB wasn't pretty. Some ERA regression is likely coming, but he did enough last season that he's expected to open in San Diego's rotation.
Griffin Canning
Griffin Canning Will begin season on injured list
Wed, Feb 18, 2026, 2:55 PM
Canning (Achilles) will begin the season on the injured list but "might not be there for very long," AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Recovering from a torn left Achilles, Canning said Tuesday that he feels 100 percent when throwing off the mound, but he still has some work to do in regard to the running and agility portion of his rehab. Cassavell suggests that Canning could be ready for his season debut around late April or early May, though a there's no clear timetable just yet. The right-hander held a 3.77 ERA and 70:35 K:BB across 76.1 innings for the Mets in 2025 before getting hurt. Once healthy, Canning should slot into the Padres' rotation.
Joe Musgrove
Joe Musgrove Full go in Padres camp
Wed, Feb 18, 2026, 1:25 PM
Musgrove (elbow) is considered a full participant in Padres camp but will have his workload watched early in the season after missing the entirety of the 2025 campaign, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Analysis: Musgrove is coming back from Tommy John surgery but will not have a strict innings limit in 2026 in his age-33 season. The Padres will be sensible about how hard they push him early on, however, and an initial six-man rotation is one avenue they're considering. Musgrove boasts a 3.20 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 25.5 percent strikeout rate and 6.1 percent walk rate in his four seasons with the Padres.
Tirso Ornelas
Tirso Ornelas Booted off 40-man roster
Tue, Feb 17, 2026, 2:04 PM
The Padres designated Ornelas for assignment Tuesday.
Analysis: The club had to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Griffin Canning (Achilles), whose signing was officially announced Tuesday. Ornelas did not appear to be in the Padres' immediate plans, but it's still a bit surprising that they elected to expose him to waivers. The 25-year-old outfielder went 1-for-14 during his brief time in the majors in 2025 but boasts a .291/.369/.465 slash line during his time at Triple-A El Paso.
Walker Buehler
Walker Buehler Latches on with Padres
Mon, Feb 16, 2026, 9:11 PM
Buehler signed a minor-league contract with San Diego on Monday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Analysis: Buehler is expected to join the competition in camp for San Diego's final rotation spot, per Acee. He'll be up against the likes of Matt Waldron, Triston McKenzie, German Marquez, JP Sears and Marco Gonzales. Buehler bounced between the Red Sox and Phillies a season ago, posting a 4.93 ERA and 1.52 WHIP with a 92:61 K:BB across 126.0 innings.
Jhony Brito
Jhony Brito Moved to 60-day IL
Mon, Feb 16, 2026, 6:05 PM
Brito (forearm) was placed on the 60-day injured list Monday.
Analysis: This is a corresponding move to make room on the 40-man roster for German Marquez, who signed a one-year deal with San Diego earlier in the day. Brito underwent a UCL internal brace procedure and a repair of his flexor tendon in April of 2025, and the team has yet to provide a timetable for his return.
Ty France
Ty France Back to San Diego as NRI
Mon, Feb 16, 2026, 9:01 AM
The Padres signed France to a minor-league contract Monday that includes an invitation to spring training, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: France was drafted by the Padres and reached the majors with them before being traded to the Mariners. The 31-year-old graded out well defensively at first base in 2025 but turned in a sub-.700 OPS for the second straight regular season between the Twins and Blue Jays. France will join a suddenly-crowded mix at first base and designated hitter in San Diego.
German Marquez
German Marquez Latches on with Padres
Sat, Feb 14, 2026, 3:12 PM
Marquez signed a one-year contract with the Padres on Saturday, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Marquez struggled mightily during his first full season back from Tommy John surgery, finishing 2025 with an unsightly 6.70 ERA and 1.71 WHIP over 126.1 innings. Leaving the pitcher-unfriendly environment of Colorado will help to improve the 30-year-old's performance, but he still likely faces an uphill battle to make the Padres' rotation and could be moved to the bullpen.
Nick Castellanos
Nick Castellanos Lands in San Diego
Sat, Feb 14, 2026, 8:41 AM
Castellanos signed a one-year, $780,000 contract with the Padres on Saturday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: Castellanos will receive the league minimum from the Padres while the Phillies pay him the remainder of the $20 million he's owed this season. The 33-year-old has spent time this offseason working out at first base, per Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com, and he is expected to see time there with the Padres while also bouncing around between the outfield and DH.
Griffin Canning
Griffin Canning Signs with Friars
Sat, Feb 14, 2026, 8:24 AM
Canning (Achilles) signed a one-year contract with the Padres on Saturday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Analysis: Canning was on his way toward having one of the best seasons of his MLB career in 2025, posting a 3.77 ERA and 1.38 WHIP across 76.1 innings before rupturing his left Achilles tendon in late June. It's unclear where the 29-year-old is in his rehab process, but when healthy, he will likely claim a spot in San Diego's rotation.
Jason Adam
Jason Adam Thinks he could be ready for opener
Fri, Feb 13, 2026, 11:38 AM
Adam (quadriceps) said Friday that he "absolutely" thinks he could be ready in time for Opening Day, 97.3 The Fan reports.
Analysis: Coming back from left quadriceps tendon repair surgery, Adam has been throwing bullpen sessions but still needs to show he can field his position and run without issue. The reliever said that the "ultimate priority" is to be healthy for the bulk of the season, but he believes he has a chance to be available for Opening Day. Previous estimates have had Adam in line for his season debut around mid-April, and that's probably still the most likely scenario.
Mason Miller
Mason Miller Named closer by manager
Wed, Feb 11, 2026, 2:17 PM
Padres manager Craig Stammen confirmed Wednesday that Miller will serve as the team's closer in 2026, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The announcement was merely a formality, as Miller always appeared likely to open the season as the Padres' closer once Stammen confirmed in December that the 27-year-old righty would remain in the bullpen in 2026 and after Robert Suarez bolted for Atlanta in free agency. After being acquired from the Athletics last July in a stunning deadline deal, Miller turned in a 0.77 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and 45 strikeouts to go along with two saves in 23.1 innings to close out the Padres' regular season. Now that he's in line to receive the overwhelming majority of save chances in San Diego to go along with his typically pristine ratios, Miller has a strong argument for being the first closer off the board in fantasy drafts.
Jason Adam
Jason Adam Could be back by mid-April
Tue, Feb 10, 2026, 10:18 AM
Adam (quadriceps) could be ready for his season debut "by mid-April or thereabouts," AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Adam is working his way back from left quadriceps tendon repair surgery, which he had last September. The Padres anticipate the veteran reliever throwing off a mound during spring training, and he could be ready for a rehab assignment around Opening Day. Once healthy, Adam will be a top setup man to closer Mason Miller.
Riley Pint
Riley Pint Lands with Padres on MiLB deal
Thu, Feb 5, 2026, 8:17 AM
The Padres signed Pint to a minor-league contract Tuesday.
Analysis: Pint signed a minor-league deal with the Guardians last offseason but never wound up pitching in their organization or anywhere else in 2025, presumably due to an undisclosed injury. The one-time No. 4 overall draft pick has been tattooed for nine runs over 3.2 innings during his brief time in the majors.
Miguel Andujar
Miguel Andujar Lands in San Diego
Wed, Feb 4, 2026, 8:48 PM
Andujar signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Padres on Wednesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Andujar finished the 2025 campaign on a high note after being traded from the Athletics to Cincinnati at the deadline, slashing .359/.400/.544 with four homers, 17 RBI and 14 runs scored over 110 regular-season plate appearances with the Reds. Now with the Padres, the 30-year-old outfielder is likely to see most of his playing time come against left-handed starters, as he's posted an impressive .967 OPS versus southpaws since 2023.
Marco Gonzales
Marco Gonzales Nets NRI pact from San Diego
Thu, Jan 29, 2026, 1:59 PM
The Padres signed Gonzales to a minor-league contract Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: Gonzales will receive $1.5 million if in the majors, with an additional $1 million available in incentives. The lefty went unsigned while missing the entire 2025 season following flexor tendon surgery, but he should be fully recovered from that operation and enter spring training without major restrictions. Gonzales -- who turns 34 in February -- hasn't pitched in a game setting since Aug. 2024, so he'll surely need some time in the minors. He holds a career 4.16 ERA over 170 appearances (162 starts) at the major-league level.
Samad Taylor
Samad Taylor Finds work with Padres
Sat, Jan 24, 2026, 5:23 PM
Taylor signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Saturday that includes an invitation to spring training, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Taylor elected free agency Friday after being outrighted by the Mariners, and he'll now attempt to carve out a role for himself with the Padres. The 27-year-old carries just a .532 OPS through 83 career plate appearances in the majors, but he slashed .296/.378/.461 with 86 RBI, 124 runs scored and 44 steals over 137 games at Triple-A Tacoma in 2025.
Yu Darvish
Yu Darvish Considering retirement
Sat, Jan 24, 2026, 3:26 PM
Darvish (elbow) is considering retiring from professional baseball, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Darvish is slated to earn $46 million over the next three years, but after undergoing UCL repair surgery in November that will cause him to miss all of 2026, the 39-year-old's future in MLB is uncertain. Injuries have limited him to just 31 big-league starts over the past two regular seasons, during which he's turned in a 4.28 ERA and 1.12 WHIP across 153.2 total innings.
