Bailey Falter
Bailey Falter Mixed results in fourth loss
Fri, Jul 4, 2025, 7:23 PM
Falter (6-4) took the loss Friday against the Mariners, giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits and no walks in 5.2 innings. He struck out four.
Analysis: After working just 1.2 innings in a rain-shortened appearance in his last start, Falter managed his longest outing Friday since his May 31 start. The four strikeouts matched the southpaw's most in his last eight appearances, and he avoided lending a free pass for the first time since May 20. Falter will take a 3.69 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 56:32 K:BB across 92.2 frames on the road his next time out against the Royals, who have a paltry .588 OPS versus left-handed pitching since and including June 6.
Tommy Pham
Tommy Pham Sitting Friday
Fri, Jul 4, 2025, 12:19 PM
Pham is not in Friday's lineup against the Mariners.
Analysis: Pham had started four games in a row and is hitting .448 with two home runs over his last eight games. Adam Frazier is drawing the start in left field while batting seventh.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa
Isiah Kiner-Falefa Knocks in two runs
Wed, Jul 2, 2025, 10:28 PM
Kiner-Falefa went 1-for-3 with a two-run single in Wednesday's 5-0 win over St. Louis.
Analysis: Kiner-Falefa doubled the Pirates' lead in the seventh inning with a two-run single that brought Ke'Bryan Hayes and Tommy Pham home. Kiner-Falefa has recorded at least one hit in seven of his last eight games and has gone 8-for-27 (.296) with one steal and five RBI over that span.
Tommy Pham
Tommy Pham Stays hot at plate
Wed, Jul 2, 2025, 10:26 PM
Pham went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 5-0 win over the Cardinals.
Analysis: Pham was responsible for the Pirates' first two runs of the game with RBI singles in the second and seventh. The journeyman outfielder has gone 13-for-29 (.448) with two home runs and 13 RBI over his last eight games, which is in stark contrast to his 1-for-16 mini-slump across his prior nine outings.
Mitch Keller
Mitch Keller Blanks Cards across seven frames
Wed, Jul 2, 2025, 10:15 PM
Keller (3-10) earned the win against the Cardinals on Wednesday, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out seven batters in seven scoreless innings.
Analysis: Keller got off to a shaky start after letting the first three batters he faced on base, but he was able to escape the first frame unscathed. He was lights out after giving up two more baserunners in the third, retiring the last 11 batters he faced before the bullpen came in to complete the shutout and extend the Pittsburgh pitching staff's scoreless streak to 31 innings, per ESPN. Keller has won each of his last two outings after failing to record a win across his previous 15 starts and now has a 3.64 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 106.1 innings this season. He's slated to start against the Royals on the road next week.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa
Isiah Kiner-Falefa Drives in pair in win
Wed, Jul 2, 2025, 3:23 PM
Kiner‑Falefa went 1‑for‑3 with two RBI in Wednesday's 5‑0 win over the Cardinals.
Analysis: Kiner-Falefa came through in a big spot, lining a two-run single in the seventh inning to extend the lead. The hit was his sixth in the past five games and continued a productive stretch in which the 30-year-old has gone 7-for-24 (.292) with a triple and three RBI over his last seven contests entering Wednesday.
Adam Frazier
Adam Frazier Fading into reserve role
Wed, Jul 2, 2025, 10:25 AM
Frazier is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals.
Analysis: The left-handed-hitting Frazier will hit the bench for the Pirates' third straight matchup with a right-hander (Sonny Gray) and appears to have move back into a utility role. Though he's posted a .762 OPS while batting .306 dating back to May 20, Frazier has been overtaken in left field by Tommy Pham, who offers more power upside with four extra-base hits (two home runs, two doubles) in his last seven contests.
Tommy Pham
Tommy Pham Taking back control of left field
Wed, Jul 2, 2025, 10:21 AM
Pham will start in left field and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Cardinals.
Analysis: For the fourth game in a row, Pham will be included in the lineup against a right-handed starting pitcher (Sonny Gray). Pham appears to have overtaken Adam Frazier as the Pirates' preferred option in left field, with Pham's recent uptick in playing time coming while he's gone 11-for-25 (.440 average) with two home runs, 11 RBI and four runs over his last seven games.
Joey Bart
Joey Bart Sitting again in favor of Davis
Wed, Jul 2, 2025, 9:45 AM
Bart is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Cardinals.
Analysis: Even with the Pirates and Cardinals wrapping up their series with a day game after a night game, Pittsburgh will go with Henry Davis at catcher for the second day in a row. Since returning from the injured list June 17, Bart has made eight starts to Davis' seven starts, but Davis has started behind the dish in three of the last four contests.
David Bednar
David Bednar Nails down 12th save
Wed, Jul 2, 2025, 8:29 AM
Bednar gave up a hit and a walk in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday to record his 12th save of the season in a 1-0 win over the Cardinals.
Analysis: The veteran closer wrapped up a combined shutout begun by Paul Skenes, but Bednar needed 20 pitches (12 strikes) to get the job done. His control is beginning to waver again, as he sports a 9:4 K:BB over his last six innings, but Bednar hasn't allowed an earned run since May 23 as he continues a remarkable turnaround from a rough 2024 and a demotion to Triple-A Indianapolis early in 2025. He needs four more saves to become the sixth pitcher in history to collect 100 in a Pirates uniform, but with the trade deadline looming, it's possible he gets dealt away before he reaches that milestone.
Paul Skenes
Paul Skenes Runs up pitch count in no-decision
Wed, Jul 2, 2025, 8:22 AM
Skenes didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 1-0 win over the Cardinals, allowing five hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out five.
Analysis: The 23-year-old phenom found himself locked in an unlikely pitchers' duel with Andre Pallante, but Skenes bowed out early after needing 88 pitches (59 strikes) to record his 15 outs. He's failed to last more than five innings in three of his last four starts but has remained effective despite the inefficiency, posting a 2.70 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB through 20 innings over that stretch. Skenes will look for his first win since May 28 in his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week in Kansas City.
Ke'Bryan Hayes
Ke'Bryan Hayes Plates two runs in victory
Mon, Jun 30, 2025, 9:51 PM
Hayes went 1-for-4 with two RBI in Monday's 7-0 win against the Cardinals.
Analysis: The 28-year-old stretched Pittsburgh's lead to 6-0 when he ripped a two-RBI single off St. Louis starter Erick Fedde in the fifth inning. The hit caps a solid June during which Hayes hit .301 (25-for-83) with a homer, three steals, 12 runs scored and 11 RBI in 23 total games. Through 311 total plate appearances, the third baseman is slashing .246/.297/.304 with two homers, nine steals, 27 runs scored and 29 RBI.
Spencer Horwitz
Spencer Horwitz Slugs first leadoff homer
Mon, Jun 30, 2025, 9:45 PM
Horwitz went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and a two-RBI double in Monday's 7-0 victory over the Cardinals.
Analysis: The Pittsburgh first baseman launched his first career leadoff homer when he took St. Louis starter Erick Fedde deep on the second pitch. Horwitz then returned in the third to lace a two-RBI double off Fedde to notch his second two-bagger of the season. The former Blue Jay has settled into a strong-side platoon role and is now slashing .258/.324/.383 with two homers, 17 runs scored and 14 RBI across 142 plate appearances in 36 games.
Andrew Heaney
Andrew Heaney Fires 6.2 scoreless frames in win
Mon, Jun 30, 2025, 9:38 PM
Heaney (4-7) picked up the win in Monday's contest versus St. Louis, allowing three hits and one walk over 6.2 scoreless innings. He struck out seven.
Analysis: The veteran southpaw snapped a streak of two straight outings conceding seven runs and picked up his first win since May 21 against Cincinnati. Heaney did not allow an extra-base hit to the Cardinals lineup, as he notched only his second outing with seven or more Ks across his last 12 starts. Through 93 total innings, Heaney sports a 4.16 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 71:31 K:BB while yielding 14 homers. The 34-year-old currently lines up to make his next start at Seattle this weekend.
Jared Triolo
Jared Triolo Back on bench Monday
Mon, Jun 30, 2025, 2:54 PM
Triolo is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals.
Analysis: Triolo was included in the lineup in three of the Pirates' previous four games, but the bulk of his starts are still expected to come against left-handed pitching when Pittsburgh has all of its core infielders available. Most of the 27-year-old's value to the Pirates derives from his ability to play all four infield spots, as he's been an easy out at the plate with a .167/.260/.280 slash line over 152 plate appearances on the season.
Adam Frazier
Adam Frazier Idle against righty
Mon, Jun 30, 2025, 2:50 PM
Frazier is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals.
Analysis: The left-handed-hitting Frazier had batted out of the leadoff spot in both of the Pirates' previous two matchups with righties, but he'll be left out of the lineup entirely Monday while St. Louis sends right-hander Erick Fedde to the hill. Tommy Pham will take over Frazier's spot in left field, while Spencer Horwitz tops the batting order for Pittsburgh.
Johan Oviedo
Johan Oviedo Cleared to begin rehab assignment
Mon, Jun 30, 2025, 8:47 AM
Oviedo (lat) was sent to the rookie-level Florida Complex League on Monday to begin a rehab assignment.
Analysis: Oviedo missed the entire 2024 season following Tommy John surgery and then suffered a right lat strain during spring training. Given how long it has been since he's pitched in games, Oviedo is likely to use all of the 30 allotted days during his rehab assignment before the Pirates activate him from the 60-day injured list. The 27-year-old has minor-league options remaining, so he could stick around at Triple-A Indianapolis rather than rejoining the big club if the Pirates decide he's not ready to contribute at the major-league level once his rehab window closes.
Carmen Mlodzinski
Carmen Mlodzinski Earns win in relief
Sun, Jun 29, 2025, 9:08 PM
Mlodzinski (2-5) allowed two hits over 3.2 scoreless innings of relief against the Mets on Sunday. He struck out two and earned the win.
Analysis: Mlodzinski took on a bulk relief role in the blowout victory after Mike Burrows and Genesis Cabrera combined to allow one run over 5.1 frames. Mlodzinski threw 35 of 54 pitches for strikes and secured his first win since April 7. Since returning from Triple-A Indianapolis to join the big club's bullpen, he's produced a 3.09 ERA across 11.2 innings. For the year, Mlodzinski owns a 5.08 ERA with a 36:16 K:BB in 51.1 frames.
Mike Burrows
Mike Burrows Fans five in no-decision
Sun, Jun 29, 2025, 9:05 PM
Burrows did not factor in the decision during Sunday's win against the Mets. He allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out five over 4.1 innings.
Analysis: Burrows got the start Sunday on short rest after making a multi-inning relief appearance against Milwaukee on Wednesday. While he did not qualify for the win, he was sharp, with the lone blemish on his outing being Luis Torrens' solo shot in the fifth inning. Burrows dropped his ERA to 4.15 with a 35:10 K:BB through 34.2 innings this season. He's currently slated to start in Seattle next weekend.
Henry Davis
Henry Davis Knocks four hits
Sun, Jun 29, 2025, 9:02 PM
Davis went 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in Sunday's win over the Mets.
Analysis: Davis singled and scored in the second and eighth frames, sandwiched around a double in the fourth inning. He was stuck in a 3-for-33 (.091) skid since his last multi-hit performance June 7. Davis is now slashing .207/.273/.351 with eight extra-base hits through 38 appearances.
