Seth Brown Exits with injury
Thu, Sep 28, 2023, 1:59 PM
Brown was removed from the Athletics' game against Minnesota on Thursday due to left oblique soreness, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The Athletics haven't yet indicated how severe Brown's injury is, but with just three games left in the season, the 31-year-old will need to make a quick recovery in order to play again in 2023. Brown had gone 4-for-15 with a homer and three RBI across his last five games entering Thursday.
Dany Jimenez
Dany Jimenez Takes second loss Wednesday
Thu, Sep 28, 2023, 12:14 PM
Jimenez (0-2) took the loss against the Twins on Wednesday, allowing two earned runs on three hits and a wild pitch over one inning.
Analysis: Jimenez wasn't up to the task of preserving the 4-4 tie he inherited when entering in the eighth, allowing Max Kepler and Trevor Larnach to reach safely via a single and double, respectively, to lead off the frame, before advancing the latter to third on a wild pitch and then allowing him to cross the plate via Ryan Jeffers' run-scoring sacrifice fly. The right-hander's stumble snapped an extended stretch of strong performances for Jimenez, who'd generated scoreless appearances in 13 of his previous 14 trips to the mound, including six straight.
Nick Allen
Nick Allen Hits second career triple Wednesday
Thu, Sep 28, 2023, 12:08 PM
Allen went 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk in a loss to the Twins on Wednesday.
Analysis: Allen's three-bagger was the second of the season and his career, and it extended a brief but encouraging stretch of the plate for the young shortstop. The 24-year-old has hit safely in four consecutive starts, going 5-for-13 with a pair of walks and two runs in addition to Wednesday's three-bagger across 15 plate appearances in that span.
Lawrence Butler
Lawrence Butler Swats pair of doubles Wednesday
Thu, Sep 28, 2023, 12:04 PM
Butler went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs in a loss to the Twins on Wednesday.
Analysis: The rookie produced the only multi-hit effort of the night for the Athletics and the second multi-extra-base-hit tally of his nascent career as well. Butler's productive night snapped a brief 0-for-10 skid that had encompassed his previous three games, but he's picked up the pace at the plate since mid-September by producing a .259 average in his last nine contests (30 plate appearances) despite the aforementioned mini-slump.
Brent Rooker
Brent Rooker Productive in Wednesday's loss
Thu, Sep 28, 2023, 12:00 PM
Rooker went 1-for-4 with a two-run single and a stolen base in a loss to the Twins on Wednesday.
Analysis: Rooker made good use of the one at-bat he hit safely in, plating Ryan Noda and Aledmys Diaz to snap a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning. The slugger also added to his career-best stolen-base total with his fourth pilfer of the campaign after not having logged a single steal attempt over his previous three major league seasons. Rooker has also now reached safely in nine straight games and 10 consecutive starts, producing a .314/.368/.743 slash line in the 38 plate appearances he's recorded over the latter span.
Jordan Diaz
Jordan Diaz Sitting out Thursday
Thu, Sep 28, 2023, 9:58 AM
Diaz is absent from the lineup for Thursday's contest in Minnesota.
Analysis: Diaz started the first two games of the series but will begin Thursday's afternoon tilt on the bench. He'll yield to Aledmys Diaz at third base.
Esteury Ruiz
Esteury Ruiz Out of lineup again Thursday
Thu, Sep 28, 2023, 9:54 AM
Ruiz is not in the lineup for Thursday's game in Minnesota.
Analysis: It's the second straight game on the bench for Ruiz after he had started each of the previous three contests. JJ Bleday is again in left field for the Athletics while Lawrence Butler handles center.
Shea Langeliers
Shea Langeliers Not in lineup Wednesday
Wed, Sep 27, 2023, 3:00 PM
Langeliers is not in the lineup Wednesday at Minnesota.
Analysis: Tyler Soderstrom will start behind the plate and bat seventh for the visiting Athletics. Langeliers grabs a day of rest after going 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Tuesday's 11-3 loss to the Twins.
Esteury Ruiz
Esteury Ruiz On bench Wednesday
Wed, Sep 27, 2023, 2:56 PM
Ruiz is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Twins.
Analysis: JJ Bleday, Lawrence Butler and Seth Brown will start across the outfield for the visiting Athletics. Ruiz leads all American League players with 65 stolen bases, but he's slashed just .254/.307/.348 across his 483 total major-league plate appearances this season.
Tony Kemp
Tony Kemp Out again Wednesday
Wed, Sep 27, 2023, 2:52 PM
Kemp (ankle) remains absent from the lineup Wednesday at Minnesota.
Analysis: Kemp hasn't started a game for the Athletics since last Friday due to a right ankle sprain. JJ Bleday is patrolling left field Wednesday as Zack Gelof covers second base.
Tony Kemp
Tony Kemp Out again Tuesday
Tue, Sep 26, 2023, 4:04 PM
Kemp (ankle) is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Twins.
Analysis: Kemp hasn't been in the lineup since Friday versus Detroit, when he exited the contest with an ankle sprain. However, the 31-year-old received an at-bat off the bench Sunday, so the injury doesn't appear to be a serious issue.
Kevin Smith
Kevin Smith Sent to Triple-A
Tue, Sep 26, 2023, 2:40 PM
Smith was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.
Analysis: Smith was called up from Las Vegas on Sept. 5 and played in 15 games during his three weeks with the big club, but he failed to take advantage of the playing time with a .544 OPS and 38.6 percent strikeout rate in 41 at-bats. The 27-year-old has a .185/.220/.326 slash line over 146 plate appearances in the majors this season and is now likely to close the campaign with those figures.
JJ Bleday
JJ Bleday Activated from injured list
Tue, Sep 26, 2023, 2:29 PM
Bleday (knee) was activated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Bleday has been sidelined since mid-August with an ACL sprain in his left knee, but he'll be available for the Athletics this week after appearing in a few rehab contests. The 25-year-old should see playing time at least against righties down the stretch.
Esteury Ruiz
Esteury Ruiz Productive in shutout loss Sunday
Mon, Sep 25, 2023, 1:59 PM
Ruiz went 2-for-4 with a double and two stolen bases in a loss to the Tigers on Sunday.
Analysis: The rookie outfielder collected his 64th and 65th steals of the season, extending his insurmountable AL lead over the Royals' Bobby Witt (48 steals) and bringing him within three of MLB frontrunner Ronald Acuna. Ruiz is creating plenty of opportunities to utilize his blazing speed on the basepaths of late, as he's now hitting .381 (8-for-21) with Sunday's double, a home run, four RBI, two walks, seven steals and three runs across his last eight games.
JP Sears
JP Sears Fans seven in loss
Sun, Sep 24, 2023, 7:53 PM
Sears (5-13) yielded two runs on six hits and two walks over five innings Sunday, striking out seven and taking a loss against Detroit.
Analysis: Sears gave up a two-run single to Spencer Torkelson in the third inning but looked solid otherwise. Sears has given up two or fewer runs in four of his last five starts, posting a 2.93 ERA during that stretch. For the year, he owns a 4.49 ERA and a 157:51 K:BB through 168.1 frames. Sears' next outing is lined up to be on the road against the Angels.
Jordan Diaz
Jordan Diaz Not in Sunday's lineup
Sun, Sep 24, 2023, 1:51 PM
Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game versus the Tigers.
Analysis: Diaz is 2-for-26 over his past nine games and will hit the bench Sunday. Aledmys Diaz will receive a turn at third base and bat cleanup.
Seth Brown
Seth Brown On bench versus southpaw
Sun, Sep 24, 2023, 1:47 PM
Brown is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers.
Analysis: Lefty Eduardo Rodriguez is taking the mound for Detroit, so it's not a surprise Brown will open Sunday's contest on the bench. Brent Rookier will man right field while Shea Langeliers rests his legs as Oakland's designated hitter.
Tony Kemp
Tony Kemp Remains out Sunday
Sun, Sep 24, 2023, 12:21 PM
Kemp (ankle) isn't in the Athletics' lineup Sunday against Detroit.
Analysis: Kemp will now miss two straight starts after exiting Friday's contest due to a right ankle sprain. Esteury Ruiz will pick up another start in left field and bat in the leadoff spot while Kemp continues to recover.
JJ Bleday
JJ Bleday Stands out while playing full game
Sun, Sep 24, 2023, 9:32 AM
Bleday (knee) took a full game's worth of plate appearances as the designated hitter in Triple-A Las Vegas' win over Reno on Saturday, going 3-for-4 with a double, a solo home run, three total RBI and a walk.
Analysis: Bleday's night couldn't have gone much better, as the recovering outfielder continued to corroborate the improving health of his knee by suiting up for a second straight day. Bleday logged seven innings in the outfield during his rehab debut Friday night and reached safely twice in that contest, so he appears to be trending firmly in the right direction in all aspects. Bleday may only be deemed to need one more game with the Aviators before potentially being activated ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Twins.
Seth Brown
Seth Brown Records third steal of season
Sun, Sep 24, 2023, 9:01 AM
Brown went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in a win over the Tigers on Saturday.
Analysis: The swipe was only his third of the season, while the single marked the fourth time in the last five games Brown reached safely. The veteran has enjoyed a productive September overall -- he's carrying a .286 average and .801 OPS across 62 plate appearances this month -- but he uncharacteristically has only one extra-base hit, a double, over his last 10 games.
