Cole Ragans
Cole Ragans Expects to make next start
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 3:31 PM
Ragans said after being removed from Wednesday's start against the Guardians with a left thumb contusion that he "should be good" to make his next start, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Ragans' thumb was struck by a comebacker in the first inning. He initially remained in the game but was unable to continue after the thumb stiffened up on him and affected his command. Ragans will need to show during his between-starts bullpen session that his thumb is no longer an issue, but for now he's tentatively on track to take the ball next week in Detroit.

Cole Ragans Suffers thumb contusion Wednesday
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 2:08 PM
The Royals announced that Ragans was removed from his start in Wednesday's game against the Guardians in the first inning due to a left thumb contusion. He recorded two outs via strikeout and was charged with three earned runs on two hits and one walk.
Analysis: Ragans sustained the injury when he was struck on the hand by a Jose Ramirez comebacker. The southpaw initially stayed in the game, but after struggling with his control against the next two hitters he faced, the Royals opted to pull the plug on his start. Though preliminary X-rays have ruled out any structural damage to Ragans' pitching hand, he'll still need to show that the thumb contusion presents no issues with his ability to grip and command the baseball before the Royals clear him to make his next turn through the rotation. Ragans tentatively lines up to make his fourth start of the season during next week's series in Detroit.
Cole Ragans
Cole Ragans Lifted from start due to hand issue
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 12:36 PM
Ragans was removed from his start Wednesday against the Guardians in the first inning due to an apparent left hand injury, Jaylon T. Thompson of The Kansas City Star reports. He recorded two outs and was charged with three earned runs on two hits and a walk prior to departing.
Analysis: After striking out the first two batters he faced, Ragans was struck in his pitching hand by a 96-mile-per-hour comebacker off the bat of Jose Ramirez, who reached on an infield single. Ragans was evaluated by the Royals' training staff and cleared to remain in the game, but after issuing a four-pitch walk and then yielding a two-run double to Chase DeLauter, he was pulled from the contest. The Royals will likely send him in for X-rays to determine whether or not he suffered a fracture, but even if tests come back negative, Ragans could still be at risk of missing his next turn through the rotation.
Luinder Avila
Luinder Avila Shifting to bullpen role
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 11:26 AM
Avila is available to pitch out of the Royals' bullpen beginning Wednesday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Avila struggled in a spot start Saturday versus the Brewers, yielding five runs on eight hits and three walks in three innings. There's no longer a need for him in the rotation, but with the Royals' bullpen a bit short-handed, Avila will help out in relief for now rather than rejoin the rotation at Triple-A Omaha.
Kyle Isbel
Kyle Isbel Absent from lineup vs. LHP
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 9:42 AM
Isbel is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians.
Analysis: The left-handed-hitting Isbel has now been left out of the lineup three times through the Royals' first 12 games, with all of his absences coming against left-handed starters. Lane Thomas will step in for Isbel in center field Wednesday, and the two players appear likely to work in a platoon for the foreseeable future.
Isaac Collins
Isaac Collins Idle against lefty
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 9:40 AM
Collins is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians.
Analysis: Collins is a switch hitter, but he's been far more effective against righties (125 wRC+) then lefties (97 wRC+) in his career and could be treated as a quasi-platoon player. He'll hit the bench for the second time in the Royals' three matchups this season versus left-handed starters, as Michael Massey will cover left field in Collins' stead while southpaw Joey Cantillo toes the rubber for the Guardians.
Jac Caglianone
Jac Caglianone Exiting starting nine Wednesday
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 9:36 AM
Caglianone is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians.
Analysis: The left-handed-hitting Caglianone was included in the lineup the last time the Royals faced a lefty starter (Milwaukee's Kyle Harrison) on Sunday, but the 23-year-old will head to the bench for the series finale in Cleveland while southpaw Joey Cantillo takes the hill for Cleveland. Caglianone will give up his usual spot in right field to Starling Marte, who will bat eighth.
Nick Mears
Nick Mears Strong start to season
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 9:00 AM
Mears allowed no hits and a walk while striking out two over a scoreless inning in Tuesday's 2-1 loss against Cleveland.
Analysis: Mears delivered a clean eighth inning Tuesday, with a Chase DeLauter walk serving as the only blemish in a scoreless frame that kept the game tied heading into the ninth before a Cleveland walk-off. Coming off a 3.49 ERA and 0.97 WHIP across 56.2 regular-season innings last year with Milwaukee, Mears is off to a strong start this campaign with Kansas City, as he's yet to allow a run through five innings while already picking up a win and a hold.
Vinnie Pasquantino
Vinnie Pasquantino Slow start to 2026
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 8:48 AM
Pasquantino went 0-for-3 with a walk in Tuesday's loss to the Guardians.
Analysis: Pasquantino went hitless, reaching base only once via a walk in the eighth inning, though nothing came of it in a low-scoring loss for the Royals. After hitting three homers in six games for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic, Pasquantino has gotten off to a slow start to the regular season, slashing .195/.306/.220 through 11 games. While the sample is far too small to raise significant long-term concern, Kansas City could opt to give Pasquantino an off day soon to allow him to reset after starting every game to open the year.
Noah Cameron
Noah Cameron Lasts 5.2 frames in no-decision
Tue, Apr 7, 2026, 5:39 PM
Cameron did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Guardians, allowing one run on six hits and one walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out five.
Analysis: Cameron was unable to finish out the quality start but limited Cleveland to a single run while giving up just one extra-base hit. The left-hander has now surrendered just one run in each of his first two starts of the season, and his 10:2 K:BB over 10.2 frames is also encouraging. A matchup with the White Sox this weekend should provide a solid chance for Cameron to build on his strong start to 2026.
James McArthur
James McArthur Ready for throwing program
Mon, Apr 6, 2026, 11:21 AM
McArthur (elbow) is expected to resume a throwing program Monday, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: McArthur has yet to pitch in a game since he underwent surgery following the 2024 season to address an olecranon fracture in his right elbow. He required another procedure last July to remove screws from his elbow and was expected to be ready to go for the start of spring training, but he needed to be shut down again after experiencing inflammation in the elbow. The Royals have characterized McArthur's setback as minor, and though he'll start throwing again this week, he's expected to be eased along slowly in his rehab program. The reliever appears unlikely to be ready to return from the injured list until at least May.
Stephen Kolek
Stephen Kolek Ramping up in extended spring
Mon, Apr 6, 2026, 11:17 AM
Kolek (oblique) threw three innings and 49 pitches Thursday during a simulated game at extended spring training, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Kolek is in the process of building back up after suffering a Grade 1 left oblique strain in late February and missing the remainder of the Cactus League. The 28-year-old remains in Arizona but could soon report to an affiliate to begin what will likely be an extended minor-league rehab assignment. Kolek isn't projected to return from the Royals' injured list until late April or early May.
Michael Massey
Michael Massey Brought back from IL
Mon, Apr 6, 2026, 11:13 AM
The Royals reinstated Massey (calf) from the 10-day injured list Monday.
Analysis: Kansas City optioned Nick Loftin to Triple-A Omaha to clear room on the 26-man active roster for Massey, who was shelved to begin the season after suffering a mild left calf strain in early March during spring training. Massey proved his health in a three-game rehab stint with Omaha last week, during which he went 3-for-12 with a home run. He'll likely have to settle for a utility role with Kansas City and could struggle to see regular at-bats while the Royals have all of their key position players available.
Nick Loftin
Nick Loftin Sent back to Omaha
Mon, Apr 6, 2026, 11:10 AM
The Royals optioned Loftin to Triple-A Omaha on Monday.
Analysis: Loftin will cede his spot on the 26-man active roster to Michael Massey (calf), who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list. The 27-year-old utility player had appeared in four of the Royals' first nine games, going 2-for-9 with a double, two walks and three runs.
Maikel Garcia
Maikel Garcia Powers offense in loss
Sun, Apr 5, 2026, 5:35 PM
Garcia went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and an additional RBI in Sunday's 8-5 loss to the Brewers.
Analysis: After going 0-for-4 in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheder versus Milwaukee, Garcia got on track with three hits in the nightcap before delivering another multi-hit game Sunday. He launched his first home run of the season during the third inning to put Kansas City on the board. In addition to Sunday's long ball, Garcia has been productive as the Royals' leadoff man so far this season with two doubles, a .333/.425/.485 slash line and 6:5 BB:K in 40 plate appearances.
Kris Bubic
Kris Bubic Fans eight in loss
Sun, Apr 5, 2026, 5:23 PM
Bubic (1-1) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks over five innings against the Brewers. He struck out eight.
Analysis: The left-hander induced 18 whiffs on 96 pitches (58 strikes) on the way to eight strikeouts, but all four of the hits he gave up went for extra bases. Bubic also issued three walks for a second straight start to begin the season. The 29-year-old has a 4.09 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 12:6 K:BB across 11 innings and lines up to face the White Sox at home next weekend.
Michael Wacha
Michael Wacha Tabbed to start Monday
Sun, Apr 5, 2026, 10:42 AM
Wacha (illness) is expected to start against Cleveland on Monday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Wacha came down with an illness in the middle of this week and couldn't make his scheduled start Friday versus Milwaukee. The right-hander appears to be feeling better given that he will take his turn Monday. Noah Cameron is slated to start Tuesday, while Cole Ragans is scheduled to start the series finale Wednesday, per Rogers.
Eli Morgan
Eli Morgan Back to Triple-A after twin bill
Sun, Apr 5, 2026, 8:43 AM
The Royals returned Morgan to Triple-A Omaha following Saturday's doubleheader with the Brewers.
Analysis: Morgan will head back to Omaha following a dominant relief outing in his Royals debut Saturday. After Kansas City called up the veteran righty from Omaha ahead of the second game of the twin bill and designated him as its 27th man, Morgan proceeded to strike out five batters while allowing two baserunners over three scoreless frames en route to earning his second career save in the Royals' 8-2 win.
Maikel Garcia
Maikel Garcia Doubles in three-hit effort
Sat, Apr 4, 2026, 11:07 PM
Garcia went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Saturday's Game 2 win over Milwaukee.
Analysis: It was Garcia's second multi-hit game of the young campaign, and he picked up only his second extra-base knock. The infielder has logged at least one hit in six of his first eight contests, also posting one stolen base thus far. Garcia has been Kansas City's everyday leadoff man to begin the year, which should give him plenty of chances to score runs and swipe bags in the future.
Salvador Perez
Salvador Perez Smacks solo homer in nightcap
Sat, Apr 4, 2026, 11:03 PM
Perez went 1-for-2 with a solo home run, two walks and an additional run scored in Saturday's Game 2 win over Milwaukee.
Analysis: The homer was Perez's second of the young season, and he also drew a season-high two walks. The veteran backstop has hit safely in six of his first eight games, though he's without any multi-hit efforts to this point. Perez has hit cleanup in each of Kansas City's first eight contests, so he should have plenty of RBI chances moving ahead.
