Seth Lugo
Seth Lugo Takes loss despite quality start
Thu, Apr 9, 2026, 10:58 PM
Lugo (1-1) took the loss against the White Sox on Thursday, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and four walks while striking out four batters over 6.1 innings.
Analysis: Lugo was a bit wild with his four walks, but he got three double plays from his defense and gave up just one earned run. However, Kansas City was unable to score any runs, consequently saddling the right-hander with his first loss. Lugo has opened the season in strong form, notching two quality starts through three outings and posting a 1.53 ERA across 17.2 frames. His next start is projected to come on the road versus the Tigers.
Carlos Estevez
Carlos Estevez Throwing bullpen session
Thu, Apr 9, 2026, 4:08 PM
Estevez (foot) will throw a bullpen session Thursday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Estevez was placed on the 15-day injured list more than a week ago with a left foot contusion, and this appears to be the first time he's thrown off a mound since the injury. The Royals plan to eventually send Estevez out on a rehab assignment, not only to make sure he's healthy but to also give him time in a less-pressurized setting to hopefully rediscover some velocity. Lucas Erceg has been filling in as the Royals' closer and it's possible he won't relinquish the role when Estevez returns.
Stephen Kolek
Stephen Kolek Cleared for rehab assignment
Thu, Apr 9, 2026, 4:04 PM
Kolek (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha on Sunday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Kolek suffered a left oblique strain in late February and has finally been cleared to pitch in games again. He will need at least a couple rehab outings before being an option for the Royals' rotation or bullpen.
Ryan Bergert
Ryan Bergert Elbow injury at Triple-A
Thu, Apr 9, 2026, 4:01 PM
Royals manager Matt Quatraro said Thursday that Berget was removed from his last start at Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday because of right elbow discomfort, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Bergert has traveled to Kansas City to be evaluated by the Royals' medical staff, and more should be known about his prognosis following that visit. The right-hander missed out on a spot in the Royals' Opening Day rotation and has collected a 2.79 ERA and 10:5 K:BB over his first 9.2 innings at Omaha.
Carter Jensen
Carter Jensen Out of Kansas City lineup
Thu, Apr 9, 2026, 2:24 PM
Jensen is not in the lineup for Thursday's game versus the White Sox.
Analysis: Jensen had started the last two contests at catcher and the last three games overall, but he'll get some rest in Thursday's series opener. Jac Caglianone is serving as the Royals' designated hitter, and Lane Thomas will get the start in right field.
Steven Cruz
Steven Cruz Sent back to Omaha
Thu, Apr 9, 2026, 2:22 PM
The Royals optioned Cruz to Triple-A Omaha on Thursday.
Analysis: Cruz has struggled with consistency since being recalled to the big leagues at the beginning of the month, allowing eight earned runs over five innings despite going unscored upon in three of his five appearances. He'll aim to right the ship in the minors; meanwhile, Eli Morgan will come up from Omaha to fill the vacancy in Kansas City's bullpen.
Luinder Avila
Luinder Avila Sent down to Triple-A
Thu, Apr 9, 2026, 2:18 PM
The Royals optioned Avila to Triple-A Omaha on Thursday.
Analysis: Avila surrendered five earned runs in just three innings during his season debut against the Brewers on Saturday. He found more success after moving to the bullpen for his next outing, giving up just one run in three frames against Cleveland on Wednesday, but the Royals will remove him from their active roster nonetheless. Mitch Spence will come up from Omaha in a corresponding move to fill Kansas City's need for a multi-inning reliever.
Mitch Spence
Mitch Spence Recalled from Omaha
Thu, Apr 9, 2026, 2:14 PM
The Royals recalled Spence from Triple-A Omaha on Thursday.
Analysis: Spence gave up eight earned runs over seven innings during spring training but looked much better during his first start at Triple-A, tossing five shutout innings while allowing four hits and zero walks. Now back in the big leagues, the 27-year-old righty will presumably work in a long relief role, replacing Luinder Avila.
Eli Morgan
Eli Morgan Back in majors
Thu, Apr 9, 2026, 2:08 PM
The Royals recalled Morgan from Triple-A Omaha on Thursday.
Analysis: Morgan came up from Triple-A as the 27th man for Saturday's doubleheader against the Brewers, during which he gave up a hit and a walk while striking out five batters over three shutout innings. He'll now return to Kansas City alongside Mitch Spence to give the Royals a couple of fresh bullpen arms, replacing Luinder Avila and Steven Cruz.
Bailey Falter
Bailey Falter Resumes throwing
Thu, Apr 9, 2026, 10:21 AM
Falter (elbow) began playing catch Monday, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Falter was placed on the injured list Friday due to left elbow inflammation, specifically valgus extension overload that causes pain when extending the elbow. After receiving an injection, the southpaw began playing catch, with a bullpen session likely next in his rehab progression, though there is no clear timeline. Prior to landing on the injured list, Falter had been working out of the bullpen for the Royals and allowed five runs across 3.1 innings to begin the regular season.
Cole Ragans
Cole Ragans Expects to make next start
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 3:31 PM
Ragans said after being removed from Wednesday's start against the Guardians with a left thumb contusion that he "should be good" to make his next start, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Ragans' thumb was struck by a comebacker in the first inning. He initially remained in the game but was unable to continue after the thumb stiffened up on him and affected his command. Ragans will need to show during his between-starts bullpen session that his thumb is no longer an issue, but for now he's tentatively on track to take the ball next week in Detroit.
Cole Ragans
Cole Ragans Suffers thumb contusion Wednesday
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 2:08 PM
The Royals announced that Ragans was removed from his start in Wednesday's game against the Guardians in the first inning due to a left thumb contusion. He recorded two outs via strikeout and was charged with three earned runs on two hits and one walk.
Analysis: Ragans sustained the injury when he was struck on the hand by a Jose Ramirez comebacker. The southpaw initially stayed in the game, but after struggling with his control against the next two hitters he faced, the Royals opted to pull the plug on his start. Though preliminary X-rays have ruled out any structural damage to Ragans' pitching hand, he'll still need to show that the thumb contusion presents no issues with his ability to grip and command the baseball before the Royals clear him to make his next turn through the rotation. Ragans tentatively lines up to make his fourth start of the season during next week's series in Detroit.
Cole Ragans
Cole Ragans Lifted from start due to hand issue
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 12:36 PM
Ragans was removed from his start Wednesday against the Guardians in the first inning due to an apparent left hand injury, Jaylon T. Thompson of The Kansas City Star reports. He recorded two outs and was charged with three earned runs on two hits and a walk prior to departing.
Analysis: After striking out the first two batters he faced, Ragans was struck in his pitching hand by a 96-mile-per-hour comebacker off the bat of Jose Ramirez, who reached on an infield single. Ragans was evaluated by the Royals' training staff and cleared to remain in the game, but after issuing a four-pitch walk and then yielding a two-run double to Chase DeLauter, he was pulled from the contest. The Royals will likely send him in for X-rays to determine whether or not he suffered a fracture, but even if tests come back negative, Ragans could still be at risk of missing his next turn through the rotation.
Luinder Avila
Luinder Avila Shifting to bullpen role
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 11:26 AM
Avila is available to pitch out of the Royals' bullpen beginning Wednesday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Avila struggled in a spot start Saturday versus the Brewers, yielding five runs on eight hits and three walks in three innings. There's no longer a need for him in the rotation, but with the Royals' bullpen a bit short-handed, Avila will help out in relief for now rather than rejoin the rotation at Triple-A Omaha.
Kyle Isbel
Kyle Isbel Absent from lineup vs. LHP
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 9:42 AM
Isbel is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians.
Analysis: The left-handed-hitting Isbel has now been left out of the lineup three times through the Royals' first 12 games, with all of his absences coming against left-handed starters. Lane Thomas will step in for Isbel in center field Wednesday, and the two players appear likely to work in a platoon for the foreseeable future.
Isaac Collins
Isaac Collins Idle against lefty
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 9:40 AM
Collins is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians.
Analysis: Collins is a switch hitter, but he's been far more effective against righties (125 wRC+) then lefties (97 wRC+) in his career and could be treated as a quasi-platoon player. He'll hit the bench for the second time in the Royals' three matchups this season versus left-handed starters, as Michael Massey will cover left field in Collins' stead while southpaw Joey Cantillo toes the rubber for the Guardians.
Jac Caglianone
Jac Caglianone Exiting starting nine Wednesday
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 9:36 AM
Caglianone is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians.
Analysis: The left-handed-hitting Caglianone was included in the lineup the last time the Royals faced a lefty starter (Milwaukee's Kyle Harrison) on Sunday, but the 23-year-old will head to the bench for the series finale in Cleveland while southpaw Joey Cantillo takes the hill for Cleveland. Caglianone will give up his usual spot in right field to Starling Marte, who will bat eighth.
Nick Mears
Nick Mears Strong start to season
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 9:00 AM
Mears allowed no hits and a walk while striking out two over a scoreless inning in Tuesday's 2-1 loss against Cleveland.
Analysis: Mears delivered a clean eighth inning Tuesday, with a Chase DeLauter walk serving as the only blemish in a scoreless frame that kept the game tied heading into the ninth before a Cleveland walk-off. Coming off a 3.49 ERA and 0.97 WHIP across 56.2 regular-season innings last year with Milwaukee, Mears is off to a strong start this campaign with Kansas City, as he's yet to allow a run through five innings while already picking up a win and a hold.
Vinnie Pasquantino
Vinnie Pasquantino Slow start to 2026
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 8:48 AM
Pasquantino went 0-for-3 with a walk in Tuesday's loss to the Guardians.
Analysis: Pasquantino went hitless, reaching base only once via a walk in the eighth inning, though nothing came of it in a low-scoring loss for the Royals. After hitting three homers in six games for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic, Pasquantino has gotten off to a slow start to the regular season, slashing .195/.306/.220 through 11 games. While the sample is far too small to raise significant long-term concern, Kansas City could opt to give Pasquantino an off day soon to allow him to reset after starting every game to open the year.
Noah Cameron
Noah Cameron Lasts 5.2 frames in no-decision
Tue, Apr 7, 2026, 5:39 PM
Cameron did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Guardians, allowing one run on six hits and one walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out five.
Analysis: Cameron was unable to finish out the quality start but limited Cleveland to a single run while giving up just one extra-base hit. The left-hander has now surrendered just one run in each of his first two starts of the season, and his 10:2 K:BB over 10.2 frames is also encouraging. A matchup with the White Sox this weekend should provide a solid chance for Cameron to build on his strong start to 2026.
