Brice Matthews
Brice Matthews Swats fourth homer
Wed, May 6, 2026, 6:41 PM
Matthews went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 12-2 loss to the Dodgers.
Analysis: The 24-year-old led off the bottom of the first inning by ripping a Tyler Glasnow (back) sinker into the Crawford Boxes in left field, but it was the only lead the Astros would hold on the afternoon. Matthews is up to four homers on the season, and three of them have come in the last nine games -- a stretch in which he's batting .323 (10-for-31) with five runs and eight RBI as he begins to establish himself as an everyday player for Houston.
Jason Alexander
Jason Alexander Back in minors
Wed, May 6, 2026, 4:58 PM
The Astros optioned Alexander to Triple-A Sugar Land on Wednesday.
Analysis: Alexander was recalled from Triple-A on Tuesday, but he'll head back down after giving up five earned runs over 4.1 innings during Wednesday's loss to the Dodgers. The 33-year-old righty owns a 4.97 ERA and 1.52 WHIP through 29 innings (six starts) in the minors this season and could be called upon to make more appearances in the majors this year, especially considering the number of injuries that have already hit Houston's pitching staff.
Lance McCullers Jr.
Lance McCullers Jr. Short start due to possible blister
Wed, May 6, 2026, 2:27 PM
McCullers was removed from his start Wednesday against the Dodgers in the top of the third inning after he appeared to be contending with a blister on his pitching hand, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. He was charged with six earned runs on four hits and three walks over 2.2 innings prior to his departure.
Analysis: McCullers was visited on the mound by manager Joe Espada and a team trainer at one point during his start, and though he was able to stay in the game, he continued to struggle with his control before the Astros pulled him from the contest. In addition to issuing three free passes, McCullers threw three wild pitches and found the strike zone on just 39 of his 70 pitches overall. Even if McCullers checks out fine on the health front and is ready to make his next start, the Astros may have to begin to consider moving him out of the rotation. After the disastrous outing Wednesday, McCullers's ERA now sits at 7.41 over 34 innings on the season.
Shay Whitcomb
Shay Whitcomb Called up to majors
Wed, May 6, 2026, 12:17 PM
Whitcomb was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land on Wednesday.
Analysis: In response to Carlos Correa (ankle) being placed on the 10-day IL, Whitcomb will join Houston for the series finale against the Dodgers on Wednesday. The 27-year-old is back with the Astros after being demoted Monday and is likely to fill a reserve role.
Carlos Correa
Carlos Correa Shelved with season-ending injury
Wed, May 6, 2026, 11:31 AM
The Astros placed Correa (ankle) on the 10-day injured list Wednesday.
Analysis: The transaction was merely a formality after Correa told media members earlier Wednesday that he would require season-ending surgery after tearing a tendon in his left ankle during batting practice prior to Tuesday's game against the Dodgers. Correa will face an expected recovery timeline of 6-to-8 months, which should put him on track to be ready for the start of spring training. Houston recalled Shay Whitcomb from Triple-A Sugar Land in a corresponding transaction, but Isaac Paredes should step in as the Astros' everyday third baseman in Correa's absence. In the short term, Nick Allen and Braden Shewmake are likely to share the shortstop position until Jeremy Pena (hamstring) is activated from the IL.
Tatsuya Imai
Tatsuya Imai Next start will be in majors
Wed, May 6, 2026, 11:21 AM
Astros general manager Dana Brown said Tuesday that Imai (arm) will rejoin the rotation next week versus the Mariners, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: If Imai is kept on a schedule of five days of rest in between starts, he'll be in line to start Monday's series opener. He made his second rehab start Tuesday with Triple-A Sugar Land, allowing one run on one hit with a 3:5 K:BB over three innings. Imai, who is coming back from fatigue in his pitching arm, threw 63 pitches Tuesday, so he will not be ready for a full workload in his first start back with the big club.
Carlos Correa
Carlos Correa Set for season-ending ankle surgery
Wed, May 6, 2026, 10:45 AM
Correa will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a tendon tear in his left ankle, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Correa hurt his ankle during batting practice prior to Tuesday's contest versus the Yankees, and the decision to have surgery was made after he consulted with a foot specialist. The expectation is that Correa will require 6-to-8 months to recover, so he should be ready for spring training next year. With Correa out, Isaac Paredes will serve as the Astros' everyday third baseman, and Nick Allen should be the primary shortstop until Jeremy Pena (hamstring) returns.
Christian Vazquez
Christian Vazquez Absent from lineup
Wed, May 6, 2026, 10:27 AM
Vazquez is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Dodgers.
Analysis: Vazquez is at the top of the Astros' catcher depth chart following the injury to Yainer Diaz (oblique), but he'll get some rest during Wednesday's matinee. Cesar Salazar is doing the catching and batting ninth in what will be his season debut with the big club.
Jose Altuve
Jose Altuve Getting breather Wednesday
Wed, May 6, 2026, 10:24 AM
Altuve is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers.
Analysis: It's a routine day off for Altuve, who is celebrating his 36th birthday. The Astros are going with Brice Matthews at second base and in the leadoff spot in Wednesday's rubber match.
Christian Walker
Christian Walker Launches ninth homer
Wed, May 6, 2026, 6:28 AM
Walker went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Dodgers.
Analysis: Walker opened the scoring in the second inning with a 305-foot blast off Shohei Ohtani, his ninth homer of the year and the first given up by Ohtani this season. Walker has been red hot at the plate to start the year -- he's gone 21-for-54 (.389) with five homers and a 1.153 OPS in his last 14 games, boosting his slash line to .308/.384/.579 through 151 plate appearances this season.
Braden Shewmake
Braden Shewmake Capitalizes on start with homer
Tue, May 5, 2026, 10:39 PM
Shewmake went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in a 2-1 win over the Dodgers on Tuesday.
Analysis: Shewmake hasn't gotten many opportunities since he was called up April 20, and this was his first start in the Astros' past six contests. He made the most of it by logging half of Houston's four total hits, including a solo homer in the third inning, which proved to be the winning run. Shewmake has been effective when given a chance with a .308/.308/.769 slash line, two home runs and two RBI over 14 plate appearances, but his fantasy viability is very limited given how little playing time he's received.
Bryan King
Bryan King Picks up third save
Tue, May 5, 2026, 10:22 PM
King earned a save against the Dodgers on Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and no walks while striking out two batters over two innings.
Analysis: After Peter Lambert gave Houston seven scoreless frames, King was called upon in the eighth to preserve a 2-0 lead. The southpaw surrendered a run on two hits in the inning but was allowed to return for the ninth, and he worked around a one-out single to close out the Houston victory. King is up to three saves on the campaign and has earned a save in each of his past two appearances, so he's clearly a trusted part of the Astros' high-leverage mix. He could see more save opportunities over the next several weeks, though Josh Hader (biceps) figures to reclaim his closer role once he's ready to be activated from the injured list, which could happen in late May.
Peter Lambert
Peter Lambert Dominates Dodgers in victory
Tue, May 5, 2026, 10:17 PM
Lambert (2-2) earned the win over the Dodgers on Tuesday, allowing three hits and issuing four walks while striking out four batters over seven scoreless innings.
Analysis: Lambert was a bit wild in issuing four free passes, but those didn't hurt him since he gave up only three hits. The right-hander did face some tension when Los Angeles loaded the bases against him in the fourth frame, but he got out of that inning unscathed in the scoring column and surrendered just one baserunner thereafter. Lambert's seven innings were a season high, and he notched his second quality start through four outings. He's getting a chance with Houston's rotation due to injuries to other pitchers, but Lambert may be earning his way to a permanent starting role, as he's posted a 2.42 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 23:11 K:B across 22.1 innings so far.
Carlos Correa
Carlos Correa Scratched with ankle injury
Tue, May 5, 2026, 6:08 PM
Correa was scratched from the lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against the Dodgers due to a left ankle injury, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Correa will miss Tuesday's game after injuring himself during pregame batting practice. The severity of his injury is still unclear, though the Astros will presumably offer more information after they take a closer look at him. In the meantime, Nick Allen will shift to shortstop to cover for Correa, and Braden Shewmake will enter the lineup to start at third base.
Nick Allen
Nick Allen Reinstated, starting Tuesday
Tue, May 5, 2026, 4:21 PM
The Astros reinstated Allen (back) from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Julia Morales of Space City Home Network reports.
Analysis: It was thought Allen may not return until later in May, but he's set to start at third base and is batting ninth versus the Dodgers on Tuesday. The Infielder was shut down April 20 due to back spasms that had kept him out of the lineup in the few days prior. As part of a series of roster moves Tuesday, the Astros placed Yainer Diaz on the 10-day IL with a left oblique strain.
Yainer Diaz
Yainer Diaz Officially placed on IL
Tue, May 5, 2026, 4:17 PM
The Astros placed Diaz (oblique) on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: A left oblique strain caused Diaz to be scratched from the lineup ahead of Monday's contest and will now also prevent him from playing for another 10 days. Christian Vazquez will presumably take over as the Astros' primary catcher while Diaz is on the shelf, and Nick Allen (back) will come off the injured list to claim the open roster spot.
Zach Dezenzo
Zach Dezenzo Recalled following IL stint
Tue, May 5, 2026, 4:12 PM
The Astros recalled Dezenzo (elbow) from Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday, Julia Morales of Space City Home Network reports.
Analysis: Dezenzo is returning from a right elbow sprain he suffered while playing in the World Baseball Classic for Team Italy. He was activated off of the 10-day injured list Monday, but was promptly optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land. The outfielder is not in the lineup versus the Dodgers on Tuesday, so he will have to wait to see his first MLB action of the season. In part of a corresponding move, Dustin Harris was designated for assignment.
Dustin Harris
Dustin Harris DFA'd by Astros
Tue, May 5, 2026, 4:11 PM
The Astros designated Harris for assignment Tuesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Harris appeared in 11 games after joining the Astros in mid-April, during which he went 7-for-31 (.226) at the plate with four RBI, four runs and two steals. He'll lose his place on the active roster to make room for Zach Dezenzo, who was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land in a corresponding move.
Ryan Weiss
Ryan Weiss Demoted to Triple-A
Tue, May 5, 2026, 4:07 PM
The Astros optioned Weiss to Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Weiss was lit up for seven runs (six earned) over 4.1 innings during Monday's loss to the Dodgers, inflating his ERA to 7.62 to go with a 2.12 WHIP through 26 innings on the year. He'll now head back to the minors to right the ship, and Jason Alexander will come up from Triple-A to round out Houston's bullpen.
Jason Alexander
Jason Alexander Back up with Houston
Tue, May 5, 2026, 4:05 PM
The Astros recalled Alexander from Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday, Julia Morales of Space City Home Network reports.
Analysis: Alexander is returning to Houston after departing for Triple-A Sugar Land on Sunday. The move comes along with Ryan Weiss being optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land Monday night.
