Ty Madden
Ty Madden Set to be activated Monday
Sun, May 31, 2026, 5:11 PM
Madden (forearm) is expected be activated from the 15-day injured list and start Monday's contest on the mound versus the Rays, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Madden will make his return to action with the Tigers after missing just over two weeks while recovering from a right forearm contusion. The 26-year-old tossed 4.1 innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out three in his only minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Toledo on Monday. Madden has posted a 2.38 ERA and 0.79 WHIP with 12 punchouts over 11.1 innings in three appearances with Detroit this season, and Monday's start will be his first of the 2026 campaign.
Drew Anderson
Drew Anderson Hit hard in third loss
Sun, May 31, 2026, 4:48 PM
Anderson (2-3) allowed two runs on four hits while retiring only two batters in relief to take the loss Sunday against the White Sox.
Analysis: After Detroit starter Keider Montero tossed six scoreless innings, Anderson came on in the seventh and got into some trouble. He retired the first batter he faced but then served up a solo home run to Colson Montgomery. Chicago proceeded to rattle off three more hits in a row to plate another run before Anderson got the hook with the Tigers trailing 2-1. The righty has allowed four runs (three earned) over his last two appearances, which has pushed his ERA from 3.44 up to 4.03, and he was charged with the loss in both outings as well.
Spencer Torkelson
Spencer Torkelson Records two hits, RBI in loss
Sun, May 31, 2026, 4:41 PM
Torkelson went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the White Sox.
Analysis: While Detroit is struggling with a 2-8 record in its last 10 games, Torkelson has been heating up. During that same stretch, he's batting .314 with five extra-base hits. Overall, Torkelson is now batting .214 with a .720 OPS, and he seems to be trending upward toward the career-best .240 batting average and .789 OPS he posted during the 2025 regular season. His power is down, however, with only eight home runs in 59 games this year after going deep 31 times in 155 games last regular season, which tied his career high.
Gage Workman
Gage Workman Returns to Triple-A
Sun, May 31, 2026, 1:09 PM
The Tigers optioned Workman to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday.
Analysis: Workman ended up being the roster casualty after the Tigers activated outfielder Kerry Carpenter (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list prior to Sunday's series finale versus the White Sox. After being called up from Triple-A on May 10 when Carpenter was initially placed on the shelf, Workman appeared in 16 games for Detroit but slashed just .158/.158/.553 with a 42.1 percent strikeout rate over 38 plate appearances.
Dillon Dingler
Dillon Dingler Taking seat Sunday
Sun, May 31, 2026, 12:45 PM
Dingler is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox.
Analysis: The absence ends a run of 24 consecutive starts for Dingler, who posted a .191/.194/.416 slash line with five doubles, five homers, 11 RBI and 11 runs during that span. Jake Rogers will step in behind the plate Sunday while Kerry Carpenter (shoulder) serves as the DH in his return from the injured list.
Kerry Carpenter
Kerry Carpenter Returning from IL as DH on Sunday
Sun, May 31, 2026, 10:29 AM
The Tigers reinstated Carpenter (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list Sunday. He'll start at designated hitter and bat cleanup in the Tigers' series finale versus the White Sox.
Analysis: Carpenter will be back in action for Detroit after a three-week absence while he recovered from an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder. The 28-year-old could eventually settle back into a regular role in the corner outfield, but after going 1-for-3 with three walks while playing in a pair of rehab games with Triple-A Toledo the past two days, Carpenter will handle a non-defensive role in his return from the IL.
Justin Verlander
Justin Verlander Completes bullpen session
Sun, May 31, 2026, 8:38 AM
Verlander (hip) tossed a bullpen session Saturday in Chicago, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Verlander returned to the mound three days after he completed a four-inning, 66-pitch simulated game Wednesday during which he topped out at 95.3 mph with his fastball, per Jason Beck of MLB.com. A left hip injury has kept him on the shelf since April 4, and while the 43-year-old hurler has been building up his pitch count in sim games, Detroit could still have Verlander go on a brief rehab stint before bringing him back from the injured list. He'll be re-evaluated Sunday before the Tigers determine his next step.
Wenceel Perez
Wenceel Perez Lifts off again in loss
Sun, May 31, 2026, 8:29 AM
Perez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 7-1 loss to the White Sox.
Analysis: Perez only has five home runs this season, but three of them have come in his last five games. The power surge is nice, but the outfielder is batting just .235 during the stretch, and he's only batting .172 overall this year. Perez looks like he can occasionally be a nice source of homers, but his low batting average will make him a volatile fantasy asset prone to extended slumps.
Framber Valdez
Framber Valdez Stuck with fourth loss
Sat, May 30, 2026, 4:30 PM
Valdez (2-4) took the loss Saturday, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks over 6.2 innings as the Tigers fell 7-1 to the White Sox. He struck out four.
Analysis: The southpaw got tagged for two runs in the first inning and two runs in the seventh, getting lifted after 89 pitches (59 strikes) having received little support from his offense. Valdez has allowed at least four runs in three of his last five outings, stumbling to a 5.93 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 22:11 K:BB in 27.1 innings over that stretch. He'll look for his first win since April 19 in his next start, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Mariners.
Zack Short
Zack Short Scores, drives in run Friday
Sat, May 30, 2026, 8:58 AM
Short went 0-for-2 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored in Friday's 4-3, 10-inning loss to the White Sox.
Analysis: That Short managed to score and drive in a run without recording a hit is fairly impressive, though his .125 batting average would have benefitted from a few base knocks. The 31-year-old has provided some infield depth in Detroit with Gleyber Torres (oblique) and Javier Baez (ankle) both currently out, though Short doesn't offer a ton of fantasy appeal with his limited offensive production.
Drew Anderson
Drew Anderson Tagged with loss, blown save
Sat, May 30, 2026, 6:26 AM
Anderson (2-2) was tagged with the loss and a blown save in Friday's extra-inning loss to the White Sox. He allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit over two-thirds of an inning, striking out one.
Analysis: Anderson entered the game with a 3-2 lead in the 10th inning and quickly retired Sam Antonacci and Derek Hill. However, with one out to go to get the job done, Anderson allowed a walk-off two-run homer to Miguel Vargas. Anderson has gone 2-for-3 in save chances this season but should continue in the late-inning mix, especially considering Kyle Finnegan's recent struggles and with Kenley Jansen (pelvis) sidelined. Despite this outing, Anderson is having a strong season with career-best marks in both ERA (3.62) and WHIP (1.18) through 37.1 innings in 2026.
Kyle Finnegan
Kyle Finnegan Another blown save
Sat, May 30, 2026, 6:21 AM
Finnegan was charged with a blown save in Friday's extra-inning loss to the White Sox. He allowed one run on two hits over one inning of work with no walks or strikeouts.
Analysis: With Kenley Jansen (pelvis) on the IL, Finnegan entered the game in the ninth inning to protect a 2-1 lead, but he couldn't close the door. With two outs, the White Sox forced extra innings when Andrew Benintendi crossed home plate on a sacrifice bunt from Rikuu Nishida thanks to a throwing error by Spencer Torkelson -- a throw that would've ended the game if it hadn't been an error. As a result, Finnegan was charged with a blown save for the fourth time in his last nine outings. He has one save and six holds this season, but his late-inning issues are worrisome -- even if he has a 2.03 ERA in 26 appearances so far. He also has a career-worst 1.58 WHIP.
Troy Melton
Troy Melton Not involved in decision Friday
Sat, May 30, 2026, 6:14 AM
Melton didn't factor into the decision Friday against the White Sox. He tossed seven innings of one-run ball, allowing six hits and a walk while striking out one.
Analysis: Melton walked the tightrope, allowing only one run on an RBI double from Miguel Vargas in the third inning. Melton has done an excellent job limiting the damage, giving up just two runs on 12.2 innings across two starts for Detroit, but his 4:4 K:BB isn't exactly encouraging from a fantasy perspective. With Casey Mize (adductor), Justin Verlander (hip) and Tarik Skubal (elbow) still out, Melton could have another turn in the rotation since he has a 1.42 ERA in his first two starts of the year. If that's the case, he'd be lined up to make his next start on the road against the Rays.
Dillon Dingler
Dillon Dingler Launches two-run homer
Sat, May 30, 2026, 6:08 AM
Dingler went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and two strikeouts in Friday's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the White Sox.
Analysis: Dingler went yard in the third inning off Erick Fedde, Dingler's third in his last eight games. Dingler looks set to have a career-best season from a power perspective in 2026. He already has 11 homers with 34 RBI and a .787 OPS in 52 games this season, compared to the 13 homers, 57 RBI and .725 OPS he posted across 126 regular-season games in 2025.
Brant Hurter
Brant Hurter Sent to 60-day IL
Fri, May 29, 2026, 5:44 PM
The Tigers transferred Hurter (back) to the 60-day injured list Friday.
Analysis: Hurter initially landed on the injured list Sunday due to lumbar spine inflammation, and his move to the 60-day IL will ensure that he remains sidelined through the All-Star break. He'll give up his place on the 40-man roster to Beau Brieske (thigh), who was activated off the 60-day IL in a corresponding move.
Beau Brieske
Beau Brieske Returns from IL
Fri, May 29, 2026, 5:41 PM
The Tigers reinstated Brieske (thigh) from the 60-day IL on Friday.
Analysis: Brieske has been on the injured list all season after suffering a left adductor strain late in spring training. He began a rehab assignment May 5 and has since given up four earned runs across 7.2 innings between Single-A and Triple-A. Now fully healthy, he'll return to the Tigers' bullpen, replacing Casey Mize (groin) on the active roster and Brant Hurter (back) on the 40-man.
Casey Mize
Casey Mize Lands on injured list
Fri, May 29, 2026, 5:33 PM
The Tigers placed Mize on the 15-day injured list Friday with right adductor inflammation, retroactive to Thursday.
Analysis: Mize left his start against the Angels on Wednesday with groin tightness, and although an MRI didn't reveal a strain, he'll still end up on the injured list while the Tigers treat his inflammation. Beau Brieske (thigh) was activated from the 60-day IL in a corresponding move, though it remains unknown who will take Mize's place in Detroit's rotation.
Troy Melton
Troy Melton Picking up another start
Fri, May 29, 2026, 1:40 PM
Melton is slated to start in Friday's game against the White Sox in Chicago, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: As expected, Melton will remain in the rotation for at least one more turn after a serviceable showing in his 2026 MLB debut. The right-hander picked up a win Sunday while striking out three batters and limiting Baltimore to one earned run on two hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. Detroit will eventually get some pitching reinforcements with Justin Verlander (hip) and Tarik Skubal (elbow) due back from the IL within the next few weeks, so Melton could be battling Keider Montero for the final spot in the rotation.
Ricky Vanasco
Ricky Vanasco Gets hit hard Thursday
Thu, May 28, 2026, 6:50 PM
Vanasco allowed four runs on four hits and two walks across two innings of relief in Thursday's 7-1 loss to the Angels. He struck out one.
Analysis: Making his first appearance since getting recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Vanasco struggled mightily. The 27-year-old righty saw his ERA jump up to 15.63, and he's now been scored upon in each of his five outings for the Tigers so far this season. It's safe to say that Vanasco is off the fantasy radar at the moment, and he may be ticketed for a return trip to the minors in the near future due to his lack of effectiveness at the MLB level.
Wenceel Perez
Wenceel Perez Homers again Thursday
Thu, May 28, 2026, 6:45 PM
Perez went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and a solo home run in Thursday's 7-1 loss to the Angels.
Analysis: Perez is now up to four home runs this season, with two of those long balls coming in the last three days. The 26-year-old outfielder still has an ugly .175/.241/.302 slash line overall, though he's showing some signs of life with the recent uptick in power. Perez should continue to see fairly regular playing time in the near term as Detroit deals with a number of injuries in the outfield.
