Zach McKinstry
Zach McKinstry Coming back from Grade 3 tear
Tue, May 5, 2026, 3:39 PM
McKinstry revealed Tuesday that he was diagnosed with a Grade 3 tear off the pelvic bone when he was placed on the 10-day injured list in mid-April, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The initial feeling was that McKinstry could be shelved for 6-to-8 weeks, but the location of the tear allowed the utility player to return Tuesday after just a three-week absence. The nature of the injury would seem to leave McKinstry susceptible to a setback, but he will attempt to play through it for now. McKinstry is starting at third base and batting eighth Tuesday versus the Red Sox.
Beau Brieske
Beau Brieske Cleared for rehab assignment
Tue, May 5, 2026, 3:33 PM
Brieske (adductor) will begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Lakeland on Tuesday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Brieske is finally ready to pitch in games after recovering from a left adductor strain he suffered during spring training. He is on the 60-day injured list and not eligible to return until late May, but Brieske should be ready to go at that time, barring a setback.
Gleyber Torres
Gleyber Torres Sitting again Tuesday
Tue, May 5, 2026, 2:34 PM
Torres (side) is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: The veteran second baseman is sitting for a third consecutive game after exiting Saturday's contest due to left side tightness. According to Chris McCosky of The Detroit News, Torres said he's feeling better and plans to do some baseball work pregame Tuesday, which could allow him to be available off the bench.
Zack Short
Zack Short DFA'd by Detroit
Tue, May 5, 2026, 2:00 PM
The Tigers designated Short for assignment Tuesday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: The 30-year-old was added to the big-league roster Sunday and will quickly be removed with Zach McKinstry (hip) coming off the injured list. Short appeared in two games during his brief time with the Tigers and went 0-for-3 with a strikeout while also committing an error.
Zach McKinstry
Zach McKinstry Activated Tuesday
Tue, May 5, 2026, 1:50 PM
The Tigers reinstated McKinstry (hip) from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: McKinstry landed on the shelf in mid-April due to hip inflammation, and he's now rejoining the Tigers after going 1-for-11 with a homer during a three-game rehab assignment. Manager A.J. Hinch said earlier in the day that the veteran utility man will be in the lineup for Tuesday's matchup with the Red Sox, but the Tigers have yet to officially release their starting nine for the contest.
Nearing return from IL
Tue, May 5, 2026, 11:23 AM
Anderson has gone 4-for-7 with two home runs, two walks and one stolen base over three rehab games for Single-A Lakeland since Triple-A Toledo placed him on its 7-day injured list April 5 due to an unspecified injury.
Analysis: Anderson had recorded a hit in each of his first four games of the season with Toledo before hitting the shelf. The 24-year-old infielder looks poised to return to the Toledo lineup soon, though it's unclear if he'll be activated for the start of the affiliate's six-game homestand against Memphis or if he'll continue his rehab assignment in the Florida State League.
Zach McKinstry
Zach McKinstry Activation coming Tuesday
Tue, May 5, 2026, 10:21 AM
Manager A.J. Hinch said that McKinstry (hip) will be reinstated from the 10-day injured list and be in the lineup Tuesday against the Red Sox, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The 31-year-old has been sidelined nearly three weeks due to left hip inflammation but is ready to rejoin the Tigers after a three-game rehab assignment. McKinstry has yet to get his bat going this season with a .209/.261/.326 slash line in 46 plate appearances.
Paul DeJong
Paul DeJong Latches on with Tigers
Tue, May 5, 2026, 8:08 AM
The Tigers signed DeJong to a minor-league contract Tuesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: DeJong opted out of his minor-league deal with the Yankees last week after slashing .203/.361/.516 with six home runs and a 16:18 BB:K in 23 games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. With Javier Baez (ankle) on the injured list and Gleyber Torres (side) also banged up, DeJong could get a look with the big club sooner rather than later.
Gleyber Torres
Gleyber Torres Still battling side injury
Mon, May 4, 2026, 9:12 PM
Torres (side) wasn't available to pinch hit Monday against the Red Sox, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: This update indicates that Torres is still being bothered by his left side injury, and it seems as though a trip to the injured list is very much on the table at this juncture. Skipper A.J. Hinch was hopeful that Torres may be able to pinch hit late in Monday's matchup, but Hinch noted after the game that the 29-year-old wasn't feeling healthy enough for an at-bat. Given this information, it's unlikely that Torres will be back in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game.
Kerry Carpenter
Kerry Carpenter Idle against lefty
Mon, May 4, 2026, 2:04 PM
Carpenter is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Red Sox, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: The left-handed-hitting Carpenter will hit the bench for the series opener while southpaw Payton Tolle takes the hill for Boston. Detroit will go with Riley Greene, Matt Vierling and Wenceel Perez as its starting outfield from left to right.
Kevin McGonigle
Kevin McGonigle Receiving evening off
Mon, May 4, 2026, 2:01 PM
McGonigle is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Red Sox.
Analysis: The Tigers typically include the left-handed-hitting McGonigle in the lineup against southpaws, but he'll be given a day off for just the third time all season while lefty Payton Tolle toes the rubber for Boston. With McGonigle on the bench, the Tigers will go with Zack Short and Colt Keith as their starters on the left side of the infield.
Zach McKinstry
Zach McKinstry Could be activated Tuesday
Mon, May 4, 2026, 2:00 PM
McKinstry (hip) has rejoined the Tigers in Detroit and could be activated from the 10-day injured list prior to Tuesday's game versus the Red Sox, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: McKinstry is 1-for-11 with a home run in his first three rehab contests. He will go through a workout Monday before the Tigers decide whether McKinstry is ready to be activated Tuesday or needs another rehab game or two. The super utility player has missed more than two weeks with left hip/abdominal inflammation.
Gleyber Torres
Gleyber Torres Out again, but available off bench
Mon, May 4, 2026, 1:55 PM
Torres (side) remains out of the lineup for Monday's game versus the Red Sox.
Analysis: Torres departed Saturday's game against the Rangers with left side tightness and will now miss a second straight start. Per Evan Woodbery of MLive.com, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said that Torres could be available to pinch hit Monday, suggesting the 29-year-old is likely to avoid the injured list. Hao-Yu Lee will start at second base in Monday's series opener.
Tyler Holton
Tyler Holton Serving as opener Monday
Mon, May 4, 2026, 1:38 PM
Holton will serve as the Tigers' opening pitcher in Monday's game against the Red Sox, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Holton will be making his second "start" in as many days, after retiring two of three batters faced as an opener in Sunday's 7-1 loss to the Rangers. The southpaw hasn't been as effective in the early going this season as he's been in recent years, posting a 5.27 ERA and 10:8 K:BB over 13.2 frames.
Ty Madden
Ty Madden Moves up from Triple-A
Mon, May 4, 2026, 1:34 PM
The Tigers recalled Madden from Triple-A Toledo on Monday.
Analysis: In his first 21 innings with Toledo this season, Madden holds a 4.71 ERA and 21:12 K:BB. The Tigers are going with a bullpen game Monday against the Red Sox, and Madden is a candidate to enter as a bulk reliever following opener Tyler Holton. Madden posted a 4.30 ERA over six appearances (one start) for Detroit in 2024 before missing all of 2025 with a shoulder strain.
Tarik Skubal
Tarik Skubal Set for elbow scope, bound for IL
Mon, May 4, 2026, 1:29 PM
Skubal is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery to address loose bodies in his left elbow and was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday, Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Skubal was seen shaking his left arm in discomfort during the seventh inning of his most recent start Wednesday in Atlanta, but after being visited by team trainers, he stayed in the game and struck out the side to complete his night. Though Skubal indicated over the weekend that he was able to stick to his usual between-starts program and felt ready to take the hill for Monday's series opener versus the Red Sox, the Tigers scratched him just hours before first pitch. According to Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic, manager A.J. Hinch said that Skubal's arm locked up on him Sunday, prompting the Tigers to shut down the star southpaw for what the team hopes is an "easy process and procedure." An official timeline for Skubal's return won't be established until his procedure is performed, but elbow scopes often keep pitchers out for 2-to-3 months.
Tarik Skubal
Tarik Skubal Scratched from start Monday
Mon, May 4, 2026, 1:10 PM
Skubal has been scratched from his scheduled start Monday against the Red Sox due to an undisclosed injury, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: Though Skubal was able to finish out his most recent start last Wednesday in Atlanta, he was seen grabbing at and massaging his left forearm during the seventh inning and was visited on the mound by a team trainer before staying in the game. Per Jason Beck of MLB.com, the two-time Cy Young Award winner said over the weekend that he was able to complete his between-starts bullpen session Friday and was feeling good heading into Monday's start, but the Tigers may not have been as convinced that he was fully healthy. More on Skubal's status will be known when manager A.J. Hinch addresses the media prior to Monday's game. Heyman relays that the Tigers' decision to scratch Skubal is viewed as precautionary, so at this stage, the southpaw is expected to avoid a stint on the injured list.
Justin Verlander
Justin Verlander Close to facing hitters
Mon, May 4, 2026, 8:48 AM
Verlander (hip) threw a bullpen session Sunday at close to full intensity, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Verlander maxed out at 94 miles per hour with his fastball during the throwing session and seemingly checked out well following the workout, which potentially sets him up to face hitters later on this week. Once Verlander reaches that step in the recovery process, the Tigers could have more details regarding when the veteran right-hander might be ready to return from the 15-day injured list. Verlander has been on the shelf since April 4 after experiencing left hip inflammation coming out of his 2026 debut.
Beau Brieske
Beau Brieske Resumes facing hitters
Mon, May 4, 2026, 8:36 AM
Brieske (adductor) faced live hitters Friday for the second time during his throwing program, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: After suffering a left adductor strain during spring training, Brieske was placed on the 60-day injured list prior to Opening Day and won't be eligible to make his season debut for Detroit until late May. Brieske looks like he could have a shot at being ready to go by that time, as he already has two live BP sessions under his belt and may soon be ready to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment. Whenever he returns from the shelf, Brieske is likely to serve in a middle-relief role for Detroit.
Troy Melton
Troy Melton Shows good velocity in rehab start
Mon, May 4, 2026, 8:31 AM
Melton (elbow) yielded two runs (one earned) on two hits and no walks while striking out two batters over 1.2 innings in his rehab start Sunday with Single-A Lakeland.
Analysis: Melton missed nearly all of spring training after straining his right elbow in late February, but he reached the final phase of the recovery process by kicking off a minor-league assignment this past weekend. Since Melton resides on Detroit's 60-day injured list and won't be eligible for activation until late May, he'll likely use close to the entire 30-day rehab window in the minors to get stretched back out. He tossed just 32 pitches in Sunday's outing, and while the results weren't flashy, Melton sported a fastball that sat around 95-to-97 miles per hour and topped out in the 98-to-99 mph range. Melton could stick around in Lakeland for another start or two before eventually moving on to one of the Tigers' higher-level affiliates during his rehab assignment.
