Kerry Carpenter
Kerry Carpenter Idle against lefty
Mon, May 4, 2026, 2:04 PM
Carpenter is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Red Sox, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: The left-handed-hitting Carpenter will hit the bench for the series opener while southpaw Payton Tolle takes the hill for Boston. Detroit will go with Riley Greene, Matt Vierling and Wenceel Perez as its starting outfield from left to right.
Kevin McGonigle
Kevin McGonigle Receiving evening off
Mon, May 4, 2026, 2:01 PM
McGonigle is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Red Sox.
Analysis: The Tigers typically include the left-handed-hitting McGonigle in the lineup against southpaws, but he'll be given a day off for just the third time all season while lefty Payton Tolle toes the rubber for Boston. With McGonigle on the bench, the Tigers will go with Zack Short and Colt Keith as their starters on the left side of the infield.
Zach McKinstry
Zach McKinstry Could be activated Tuesday
Mon, May 4, 2026, 2:00 PM
McKinstry (hip) has rejoined the Tigers in Detroit and could be activated from the 10-day injured list prior to Tuesday's game versus the Red Sox, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: McKinstry is 1-for-11 with a home run in his first three rehab contests. He will go through a workout Monday before the Tigers decide whether McKinstry is ready to be activated Tuesday or needs another rehab game or two. The super utility player has missed more than two weeks with left hip/abdominal inflammation.
Gleyber Torres
Gleyber Torres Out again, but available off bench
Mon, May 4, 2026, 1:55 PM
Torres (side) remains out of the lineup for Monday's game versus the Red Sox.
Analysis: Torres departed Saturday's game against the Rangers with left side tightness and will now miss a second straight start. Per Evan Woodbery of MLive.com, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said that Torres could be available to pinch hit Monday, suggesting the 29-year-old is likely to avoid the injured list. Hao-Yu Lee will start at second base in Monday's series opener.
Tyler Holton
Tyler Holton Serving as opener Monday
Mon, May 4, 2026, 1:38 PM
Holton will serve as the Tigers' opening pitcher in Monday's game against the Red Sox, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Holton will be making his second "start" in as many days, after retiring two of three batters faced as an opener in Sunday's 7-1 loss to the Rangers. The southpaw hasn't been as effective in the early going this season as he's been in recent years, posting a 5.27 ERA and 10:8 K:BB over 13.2 frames.
Ty Madden
Ty Madden Moves up from Triple-A
Mon, May 4, 2026, 1:34 PM
The Tigers recalled Madden from Triple-A Toledo on Monday.
Analysis: In his first 21 innings with Toledo this season, Madden holds a 4.71 ERA and 21:12 K:BB. The Tigers are going with a bullpen game Monday against the Red Sox, and Madden is a candidate to enter as a bulk reliever following opener Tyler Holton. Madden posted a 4.30 ERA over six appearances (one start) for Detroit in 2024 before missing all of 2025 with a shoulder strain.
Tarik Skubal
Tarik Skubal Set for elbow scope, bound for IL
Mon, May 4, 2026, 1:29 PM
Skubal is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery to address loose bodies in his left elbow and was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday, Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Skubal was seen shaking his left arm in discomfort during the seventh inning of his most recent start Wednesday in Atlanta, but after being visited by team trainers, he stayed in the game and struck out the side to complete his night. Though Skubal indicated over the weekend that he was able to stick to his usual between-starts program and felt ready to take the hill for Monday's series opener versus the Red Sox, the Tigers scratched him just hours before first pitch. According to Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic, manager A.J. Hinch said that Skubal's arm locked up on him Sunday, prompting the Tigers to shut down the star southpaw for what the team hopes is an "easy process and procedure." An official timeline for Skubal's return won't be established until his procedure is performed, but elbow scopes often keep pitchers out for 2-to-3 months.
Tarik Skubal
Tarik Skubal Scratched from start Monday
Mon, May 4, 2026, 1:10 PM
Skubal has been scratched from his scheduled start Monday against the Red Sox due to an undisclosed injury, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: Though Skubal was able to finish out his most recent start last Wednesday in Atlanta, he was seen grabbing at and massaging his left forearm during the seventh inning and was visited on the mound by a team trainer before staying in the game. Per Jason Beck of MLB.com, the two-time Cy Young Award winner said over the weekend that he was able to complete his between-starts bullpen session Friday and was feeling good heading into Monday's start, but the Tigers may not have been as convinced that he was fully healthy. More on Skubal's status will be known when manager A.J. Hinch addresses the media prior to Monday's game. Heyman relays that the Tigers' decision to scratch Skubal is viewed as precautionary, so at this stage, the southpaw is expected to avoid a stint on the injured list.
Justin Verlander
Justin Verlander Close to facing hitters
Mon, May 4, 2026, 8:48 AM
Verlander (hip) threw a bullpen session Sunday at close to full intensity, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Verlander maxed out at 94 miles per hour with his fastball during the throwing session and seemingly checked out well following the workout, which potentially sets him up to face hitters later on this week. Once Verlander reaches that step in the recovery process, the Tigers could have more details regarding when the veteran right-hander might be ready to return from the 15-day injured list. Verlander has been on the shelf since April 4 after experiencing left hip inflammation coming out of his 2026 debut.
Beau Brieske
Beau Brieske Resumes facing hitters
Mon, May 4, 2026, 8:36 AM
Brieske (adductor) faced live hitters Friday for the second time during his throwing program, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: After suffering a left adductor strain during spring training, Brieske was placed on the 60-day injured list prior to Opening Day and won't be eligible to make his season debut for Detroit until late May. Brieske looks like he could have a shot at being ready to go by that time, as he already has two live BP sessions under his belt and may soon be ready to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment. Whenever he returns from the shelf, Brieske is likely to serve in a middle-relief role for Detroit.
Troy Melton
Troy Melton Shows good velocity in rehab start
Mon, May 4, 2026, 8:31 AM
Melton (elbow) yielded two runs (one earned) on two hits and no walks while striking out two batters over 1.2 innings in his rehab start Sunday with Single-A Lakeland.
Analysis: Melton missed nearly all of spring training after straining his right elbow in late February, but he reached the final phase of the recovery process by kicking off a minor-league assignment this past weekend. Since Melton resides on Detroit's 60-day injured list and won't be eligible for activation until late May, he'll likely use close to the entire 30-day rehab window in the minors to get stretched back out. He tossed just 32 pitches in Sunday's outing, and while the results weren't flashy, Melton sported a fastball that sat around 95-to-97 miles per hour and topped out in the 98-to-99 mph range. Melton could stick around in Lakeland for another start or two before eventually moving on to one of the Tigers' higher-level affiliates during his rehab assignment.
Kenley Jansen
Kenley Jansen Could have pitched Sunday
Sun, May 3, 2026, 10:58 PM
Jansen (groin/abdomen) would have pitched, if needed, in Sunday's 7-1 win over the Rangers, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Jansen had been dealing with some right groin/abdomen tightness since Wednesday, but manager AJ Hinch explained that the right-hander would've pitched had the score been close in Sunday's series finale with Texas. The 38-year-old appears to be healthy heading into Monday's series opener with the Red Sox, and Jansen will look to get back on track against one of his former squads. He's surrendered four runs on three hits, including two home runs, and walk while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning in his last two appearances, both of which were blown saves.
Brant Hurter
Brant Hurter Secures win in bulk-relief outing
Sun, May 3, 2026, 10:09 PM
Hurter (4-0) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out two over 3.1 scoreless innings to earn the win over the Rangers on Sunday.
Analysis: Hurter was given bulk-relief duties in this bullpen game, and he delivered a strong performance. He entered the contest in the third inning and had his longest outing of the season, throwing 26 of 38 pitches for strikes. He's kept runs off the board over his last four games, covering eight innings with a 5:1 K:BB in that span. For the season, Hurter has a 1.50 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 12:4 K:BB across 18 innings as a multi-inning reliever. Casey Mize (thigh) and Justin Verlander (hip) are not close to returning, but the Tigers will be able to get by on a four-man rotation for most of the next two weeks, which limits Hurter's potential to rack up wins if the team doesn't use a bullpen game again for a while.
Jake Rogers
Jake Rogers Delivers rare triple Sunday
Sun, May 3, 2026, 9:30 PM
Rogers went 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored in Sunday's 7-1 win over the Rangers.
Analysis: Rogers delivered his first triple of the season and just the seventh of his six-year MLB career. The veteran catcher hasn't delivered many hits in general this year, as he's batting just .182 in a backup role to Dillon Dingler. Rogers doesn't really have much of any fantasy value due to his lack of regular playing time and poor production in general so far.
Spencer Torkelson
Spencer Torkelson Lifts off Sunday
Sun, May 3, 2026, 9:25 PM
Torkelson went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 7-1 win over the Rangers.
Analysis: It was the quintessential Torkelson game, as he struck out in his other three at-bats outside of his home run Sunday. The slugger had a five-game homer streak toward the end of April, and he now has six long balls for the season. Torkelson is also striking out nearly 30 percent of the time, making him a very boom-or-bust fantasy option moving forward.
Grant Holman
Grant Holman Loses 40-man roster spot
Sun, May 3, 2026, 4:02 PM
The Tigers designated Holman for assignment Sunday.
Analysis: Holman will be moved off an organization's 40-man roster for the fourth time in just under three months, as the Athletics, Diamondbacks and Dodgers had all previously designated him for assignment. Since Holman hasn't been previously outrighted, he'll have to accept an assignment to Triple-A Toledo if he clears waivers. The right-hander had made three appearances (one start) for Toledo since being claimed by the Tigers on April 11, logging a 6.75 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and 3:2 K:BB over four innings.
Jace Jung
Jace Jung Returns to minors
Sun, May 3, 2026, 4:02 PM
The Tigers optioned Jung to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Jung was called up from Toledo on Wednesday and will return there after going 1-for-4 with two walks and a run in two big-league contests. Zack Short is taking his spot on the major-league roster.
Zack Short
Zack Short Summoned from minor-league ranks
Sun, May 3, 2026, 3:57 PM
The Tigers selected Short's contract from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday.
Analysis: With Javier Baez (ankle) and Zach McKinstry (hip) on the injured list and Gleyber Torres (side) considered day-to-day, Short will help restore depth in the Detroit infield until the team reclaims some health. Short previously saw big-league action with the Tigers from 2021 through 2023 but most recently surfaced in the majors last season in Houston, with whom he slashed .220/.291/.380 over 56 plate appearances.
Dillon Dingler
Dillon Dingler Heading to bench Sunday
Sun, May 3, 2026, 3:50 PM
Dingler is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers.
Analysis: After making starts behind the plate in the first two games of the series, Dingler will receive a breather for Sunday's finale. Jake Rogers will fill in behind plate for Dingler, who has raised his OPS to .825 for the season after going 6-for-17 with three extra-base hits and a walk over his last five games.
Gleyber Torres
Gleyber Torres Held out of Sunday's lineup
Sun, May 3, 2026, 3:45 PM
Torres (side) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers.
Analysis: The second baseman departed Saturday's contest with left side tightness and will miss at least one game due to the injury. According to Chris McCosky of The Detroit News, Torres is expected to avoid a trip to the injured list since testing came back negative, so he appears likely to return to action within a few days.
