Casey Mize
Casey Mize Exits early with injury
Sun, Jul 19, 2026, 4:34 PM
Mize exited Sunday's start against the Angels in fourth inning after being struck in the left hand by a comebacker, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Mize entered the bottom of the fourth inning having tossed three innings of one-run ball before he took a 108.8 mph ground ball from Jo Adell off his glove hand to open the frame. The right-hander was able to finish the play, throwing out Adell at first base, but Mize was then forced to exit the game. He was already up to 74 pitches on the day, and it's possible that his removal was simply precautionary. More information on the status of Mize moving forward will likely come in the near future.
Will Vest
Will Vest Transferred to 60-day IL
Sun, Jul 19, 2026, 2:02 PM
Detroit sent Vest (elbow) to the 60-day injured list on Sunday.
Analysis: After being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right elbow, it was determined that Vest would miss an extended period of time. Through 27 games, the 31-year-old has struggled greatly, posting a 6.08 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 27:10 K:BB in 26.2 innings this season. With a roster spot opening up on the 40-man roster, Detroit selected Troy Watson's contract from Triple-A Toledo.
Contract selected, sent to Toledo
Sun, Jul 19, 2026, 1:55 PM
Detroit selected Watson's contract from Triple-A Toledo and optioned him back to Toledo on Sunday.
Analysis: Watson had his contract selected by the big-league club to be placed on the 40-man roster, but was then immediately optioned back to Triple-A Toledo. In 11 games with Toledo, the 29-year-old has posted a 3.33 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 31:14 K:BB through 46 innings. To make room for Watson on the 40-man roster, the Tigers transferred Will Vest to the 60-day injured list.
Zach McKinstry
Zach McKinstry On the bench Sunday
Sun, Jul 19, 2026, 12:35 PM
McKinstry is out of the lineup for the series finale against the Angels on Sunday, Chris McKosky of The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: McKinstry will take a rare day off, marking his first rest day in over a month since June 17. Kevin McGonigle will leadoff and play shortstop, while Hao-Yu Lee will play second base and bat seventh for the Tigers.
Kevin McGonigle
Kevin McGonigle Doubles, scores twice in win
Sun, Jul 19, 2026, 8:51 AM
McGonigle went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in Saturday's 7-0 win over the Angels.
Analysis: Like he did throughout the first half of the season, McGonigle served as an effective offensive catalyst for the Tigers. The rookie infielder now has a .389 OBP, which is good for ninth in the majors. McGonigle also has 60 walks versus only 59 strikeouts through 95 games, and his good eye at the plate along with his strong contact skills should make the 21-year-old a fairly reliable fantasy option the rest of the way.
Jackson Jobe
Jackson Jobe Moving rehab to Double-A
Sat, Jul 18, 2026, 7:37 PM
Jobe (elbow) will make his next rehab start Sunday with Double-A Erie, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Jobe started his rehab assignment July 7 with Single-A Lakehead before making another outing in the rookie-level Florida Complex League this past Monday. He has allowed one run on four hits while striking out five over 4.1 innings across his two rehab starts. Jobe is in the final stages of his recovery from Tommy John surgery that he underwent in May of 2025, and he'll need a few more rehab outings before being cleared to return to the majors.
Beau Brieske
Beau Brieske Pushed back to Toledo
Sat, Jul 18, 2026, 5:46 PM
The Tigers optioned Brieske to Triple-A Toledo on Saturday.
Analysis: Brieske made four appearances after joining the Tigers' bullpen July 1, during which he gave up one run on three hits and no walks while striking out four batters in five innings. He now owns a 6.75 ERA through 9.1 major-league innings this year and remains an option to return as bullpen depth for the big club later in the season.
Framber Valdez
Framber Valdez Rejoins team
Sat, Jul 18, 2026, 5:44 PM
The Tigers reinstated Valdez from the bereavement list Saturday.
Analysis: Valdez isn't lined up to make his next start until Detroit's next series against the Cubs, but he'll return to the team a few days ahead of time after moving to the bereavement list before the All-Star break. Beau Brieske was sent down to Triple-A in a corresponding move.
Troy Melton
Troy Melton Matches career-high mark in Ks
Sat, Jul 18, 2026, 8:45 AM
Melton didn't factor into the decision Friday against the Angels, allowing one run on four hits and four walks while striking out nine over 5.2 innings.
Analysis: Melton has struck out nine in both of his last two starts, showing excellent form of late. He's given up one run or zero in each of his last five starts, posting a 36:9 K:BB with a 0.92 ERA and 0.75 WHIP across 29.1 innings in that stretch. Melton, who made his first start of the season May 24 and hasn't left the rotation since, will try to keep it going in his next start, scheduled to come on the road against the Cubs.
Keider Montero
Keider Montero Earns win in relief
Sat, Jul 18, 2026, 8:40 AM
Montero (6-5) earned the win in relief Friday against the Angels after tossing 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out five without a walk.
Analysis: Montero has posted excellent numbers in long relief since moving to the bullpen in late June. He's held the opposition scoreless in four of his five appearances out of the bullpen while posting a 2.08 ERA and 14:4 K:BB across 13 innings. Montero has been a valuable arm in fantasy this season and is showing he's capable of handling a swingman role. He had a 3.34 ERA across 15 starts earlier in the year and is now sporting a 2.51 ERA in six relief outings.
Javier Baez
Javier Baez Taking live BP, running on tap
Fri, Jul 17, 2026, 8:47 PM
Baez (ankle) began participating in live batting practice this week and is scheduled to run the bases Saturday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Baez initially landed on the injured list in late April due to a sprained right ankle, but a setback combined with overall slow progress has caused his time on the shelf to approach the three-month mark. He'll presumably require an extended rehab assignment in the minor leagues before rejoining the Tigers, and a clearer timeline for his return to play should emerge as he increases his activity.
Brenan Hanifee
Brenan Hanifee Back in majors
Fri, Jul 17, 2026, 7:14 PM
The Tigers recalled Hanifee from Triple-A Toledo on Friday.
Analysis: Hanifee owns a 3.29 ERA and 1.39 WHIP through 13.2 innings with Detroit this season, but he's given up 11 earned runs in just 12 innings since being sent down to Toledo on June 12. His recent struggles in the minors will likely limit him to low-leverage work with the Tigers.
Bailey Horn
Bailey Horn Slated for TJ surgery
Fri, Jul 17, 2026, 7:07 PM
Horn (elbow) will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Horn has been on the injured list all season while working his way back from an arthroscopic procedure he underwent on his left elbow during the offseason. He was cleared to begin throwing in late May, but progress in his recovery has been slow, so he'll go under the knife once again to address the issue. He'll officially miss the entire 2026 campaign as a result, and the timing of his surgery makes it likely that he'll miss most, if not all, of the 2027 season as well.
Burch Smith
Burch Smith Cleared for rehab assignment
Fri, Jul 17, 2026, 5:54 PM
Smith (shoulder) will start a rehab assignment with Single-A Lakeland on Friday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Smith has been shelved by right shoulder inflammation since May 22 and was transferred to the 60-day injured list in late June. He's progressed enough in his recovery to embark on a rehab assignment and could be back in the majors by late July or early August. Prior to his injury, Smith posted a 3.18 ERA and 1.47 wHIP across 17 innings.
Reinstated from IL at Double-A
Fri, Jul 17, 2026, 11:00 AM
Briceno (wrist) was activated from the 60-day injured list at Double-A Erie on Friday, Emily Waldon of Baseball America reports.
Analysis: Briceno had surgery to repair a tendon in his right wrist back in March and began a rehab assignment late last month. The Tigers' top catching prospect, Briceno slashed .266/.383/.500 with 20 homers, 76 RBI, 60 runs scored and a 66:87 BB:K across 441 trips to the plate between High-A and Double-A as a 20-year-old last season.
Back in action in FCL
Thu, Jul 16, 2026, 7:25 AM
Oliveto (toe) has gone 3-for-13 with a triple, five walks, two RBI and two runs in five games since being assigned to the rookie-level Florida Complex League after being reinstated from Single-A Lakeland's injured list.
Analysis: Oliveto had already been on a rehab assignment in the FCL prior to being activated from the IL, going 8-for-37 (.216 average) with an 8:6 BB:K over 12 games. The 19-year-old catcher has shown a discerning eye at the plate through 17 total FCL games with a 20.6 percent walk rate across 63 plate appearances. He could get the chance to debut for Lakeland later on this season.
Gleyber Torres
Gleyber Torres Kicks off rehab assignment
Mon, Jul 13, 2026, 3:47 PM
Torres (oblique) played five innings at second base and went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI in his first rehab appearance Monday in the rookie-level Florida Complex League.
Analysis: Torres was given the green light to begin a rehab assignment after he completed a running, hitting and defensive progression during the final week before the All-Star break. The 30-year-old is on the mend from a left oblique strain, which sent him back to the shelf June 17 after he had previously missed just over a month with the same injury earlier in the season. He played in just two rehab games before returning from the injury the first time, but the Tigers may take a more conservative approach with Torres' ramp-up program this time around. While a return during the Tigers' first series following the All-Star break could be ambitious, Torres would still appear likely to make it back from the injured list at some point during the final week and a half of July.
Jackson Jobe
Jackson Jobe Hits three innings in rehab start
Mon, Jul 13, 2026, 3:09 PM
Jobe (elbow) struck out four while allowing two hits and no walks over three scoreless innings in a rehab start Monday in the rookie-level Florida Complex League.
Analysis: Jobe tossed 38 pitches (27 strikes) during the appearance, his second in the FCL after kicking off his rehab assignment last Tuesday. The flamethrowing righty could shift his assignment to a higher-level affiliate coming out of the All-Star break as he continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent last June. Jobe is expected to need the entirety of his 30-day rehab window to get fully stretched out and regain command, but the Tigers could open up a spot for him in the rotation once he's ready to return from the 60-day injured list. As a rookie last season, Jobe turned in a 4.22 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 39:27 K:BB in 49 innings over 10 starts before being shut down due to the elbow injury.
Jake Miller
Jake Miller Back on IL
Sun, Jul 12, 2026, 9:16 PM
Double-A Erie placed Miller on its 7-day injured list Sunday due to an unspecified issue.
Analysis: Miller opened the season on Triple-A Toledo's IL while he was recovering from October labral repair surgeries on both of his hips, but he was activated and assigned to Erie earlier in the week after completing a six rehab appearances across stops with three of the Tigers' lower-level affiliates. He made his debut for Erie on Tuesday and struck out two over three scoreless frames, but Miller apparently succumbed to a new injury coming out of that appearance.
Keider Montero
Keider Montero Allows three runs Sunday
Sun, Jul 12, 2026, 7:01 PM
Montero allowed three runs on four hits across three innings of relief in Sunday's 5-0 loss to the Phillies. He walked one and struck out five.
Analysis: For the first time across his last four appearances in long relief, Montero allowed a run to cross home plate. Even with the brief stumble, it was a good first half of the season for the righty, who posted a 3.33 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 65 strikeouts across 97.1 innings. Montero may slide back into Detroit's rotation at some point, but for now, expect him to stick in his bullpen role, as he's been fairly effective in relief.
