Colt Keith
Colt Keith Exits with injury
Thu, Sep 18, 2025, 12:54 PM
Keith was removed from Thursday's game against the Guardians due to an apparent back injury, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Keith was spotted grabbing at his lower back at the end of the second inning before heading into the clubhouse alongside one of the Tigers' trainers. The severity of his injury isn't immediately clear, but the team should provide an update in the near future.
Jose Urquidy
Jose Urquidy DFA'd, but expected to be optioned
Thu, Sep 18, 2025, 11:32 AM
The Tigers designated Urquidy for assignment Thursday.
Analysis: While the transaction for the time being is officially labeled as Urquidy being designated for assignment, the righty has agreed to be optioned to Triple-A Toledo and that is expected to happen Friday. Urquidy has allowed two runs over 2.1 innings since the Tigers reinstated him from the injured list earlier this week, and the club has decided it doesn't have a spot for him on the active roster right now.
Paul Sewald
Paul Sewald Returns from 60-day IL
Thu, Sep 18, 2025, 11:29 AM
The Tigers activated Sewald (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Thursday.
Analysis: Sewald was recovering from a right shoulder strain when the Tigers acquired him from the Guardians at the trade deadline, but he's made his way onto the active roster following five rehab appearances. The veteran reliever will likely be used in low-leverage spots initially but could find himself working in key situations if he looks sharp.
Jack Flaherty
Jack Flaherty Stuck with 14th loss
Thu, Sep 18, 2025, 8:59 AM
Flaherty (8-14) allowed one run on three hits across five innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Guardians. He walked four and struck out four.
Analysis: Flaherty mostly pitched well, though he struggled a bit with command and also got zero run support in a 4-0 win for the Guardians. The veteran righty has been up-and-down all season, while his 14 losses are twice as many as he had in 2024 and easily a new career high. Flaherty has at least looked fairly sharp over his last two outings, allowing just one run across 10 innings while striking out 11. He'll look to carry some momentum into his next trip to the mound, which is currently scheduled for Tuesday against this same Cleveland squad.
Kyle Finnegan
Kyle Finnegan Cleared for rehab appearance
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 3:36 PM
Finnegan (groin) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Analysis: Finnegan has missed most of September with a right adductor strain but has been cleared to test things out in a game setting. Given his brief absence, it could be the only rehab appearance Finnegan needs before returning to the Tigers' active roster. He's made 12 scoreless appearances and recorded four saves since being acquired by Detroit at the trade deadline.
Javier Baez
Javier Baez Goes hitless in lineup return
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 2:13 PM
Baez (head) started at shortstop and went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in Tuesday's 7-5 loss to the Guardians in 10 innings.
Analysis: Baez rejoined the starting nine Tuesday for the first time since exiting last Friday's 8-2 loss to the Marlins after fouling a ball off his head. The 32-year-old passed all concussion testing following his departure and seemingly avoided any serious injury, as he was used off the bench a day later. Since making his third All-Star appearance in mid-July, Baez is slashing just .210/.219/.298 and appears to have settled back into a part-time role at both shortstop and in center field.
Will Vest
Will Vest Saddled with loss in extra innings
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 8:44 AM
Vest (6-4) allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits across an inning of relief to take the loss in Tuesday's 7-5, 10-inning defeat to the Guardians.
Analysis: After the Tigers forced extra innings on a Kerry Carpenter solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, Vest was tapped for the top of the 10th, and he ran into trouble right away. The veteran righty started the frame by allowing three doubles and a triple before recording any outs, giving Cleveland three quick runs. Vest had rattled off five straight scoreless appearances before Tuesday, and his ERA is still a tidy 2.91 overall, so the Detroit closer should be able to move past the rough performance and get back on track soon.
Casey Mize
Casey Mize Takes no-decision Tuesday
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 8:35 AM
Mize allowed three runs on seven hits across 5.1 innings and did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's 7-5, 10-inning loss to the Guardians. He walked one and struck out eight.
Analysis: Mize was in line for his sixth loss of the season before Kerry Carpenter homered in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at 3-3 and force extra innings. It was a slight step back for Mize, who had allowed a total of three runs on nine hits across 11 innings in his previous two starts combined. On the bright side, the righty continued to display good strikeout potential. He has now fanned 16 batters in 11.1 innings over his last two appearances, and his 8.3 K/9 is a big improvement from the 6.9 mark he posted during the 2024 regular season. Mize will look to keep missing bats and try to get back into the win column in his next outing, which is penciled in for Sunday against Atlanta.
Spencer Torkelson
Spencer Torkelson Homers in four-hit game
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 8:27 AM
Torkelson went 4-for-5 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 7-5, 10-inning loss to the Guardians.
Analysis: Torkelson was dialed in all night as he delivered his first four-hit performance of the season. He saved his best for last, belting his 29th home run of the year in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Tigers tried to cut into a 7-3 deficit. Torkelson is now two away from tying his career high of 31 homers, which he recorded back in 2023. Tuesday's long ball snapped an 18-game stretch without a home run for the 26-year-old slugger.
Kerry Carpenter
Kerry Carpenter Belts 26th home run Tuesday
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 8:23 AM
Carpenter appeared as a pinch hitter and went 1-for-1 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 7-5, 10-inning loss to the Guardians.
Analysis: Carpenter didn't get the start with Cleveland sending lefty Joey Cantillo to the mound, but the former still managed to have an impact. Appearing as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Detroit outfielder went deep to tie the game at 3-3 and force extra innings. Carpenter has been in a nice power groove recently with four long balls in his last 10 games, and he's already set a new career high with 26 home runs this season.
Gleyber Torres
Gleyber Torres Goes deep in loss
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 8:17 AM
Torres went 1-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Tuesday's 7-5, 10-inning loss to the Guardians.
Analysis: Torres struck in the third inning with his second home run of September and 16th of the season. Outside of the long balls, it's mostly been a struggle this month for the Detroit infielder, as he's batting just .152 across 13 games. Overall, Torres has been much better with a .254 average through 135 games, and his 16 homers and 73 RBI have both surpassed the totals he posted last year with the Yankees.
Matt Vierling
Matt Vierling Shut down following setback
Tue, Sep 16, 2025, 4:03 PM
Vierling has been pulled off his rehab assignment due to renewed soreness in his left oblique, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Vierling is undergoing further evaluation before the Tigers determine the next steps for him. With less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, a return for Vierling before the end of the month seems unlikely. He's been sidelined since early August and has been limited to only 31 games this season due to various injuries.
Tarik Skubal
Tarik Skubal Listed as Thursday's starter
Tue, Sep 16, 2025, 11:15 AM
Skubal (side) is listed as the Tigers' scheduled starter for Thursday's game against the Guardians, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Skubal had to be removed from his last start against the Marlins with left side tightness, but imaging came back clean. According to manager A.J. Hinch, Skubal threw his normal between-starts bullpen session Monday without issue, MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM reports. The Tigers will undoubtedly keep a close eye on their ace, but Skubal's fantasy managers can lock the southpaw into their lineup.
Brenan Hanifee
Brenan Hanifee Returned to Triple-A
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 9:44 PM
Hanifee was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Monday, per MLB's transactions log.
Analysis: Hanifee will retreat to the minors after spending the last month with Detroit. During that time, he posted a 2.35 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with five strikeouts over 7.2 frames. Brant Hurter was recalled in a corresponding move.
Brant Hurter
Brant Hurter Back with big-league club
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 8:40 PM
Hurter was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Monday, per MLB's transactions log.
Analysis: Hurter missed time at the end of August due to a back injury, but he's since returned to health and will now get a chance to help the major-league team down the stretch of the regular season. He's performed well in his last 10 appearances for Detroit, posting a 1.20 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 16 strikeouts over 15.0 innings.
Spencer Torkelson
Spencer Torkelson Reaches three times, scores in win
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 8:43 AM
Torkelson went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored in Sunday's 2-0 win over the Marlins.
Analysis: The Tigers could only muster four hits as a team, but Torkelson's patience at the plate helped lead to the first run of the game, which was ultimately enough for the win. The Detroit first baseman is known for his power, as he has 28 home runs on the season, though he's also shown an improved batting eye this year. Torkelson's walk rate is currently 11.6 percent, which is up from 8.8 percent during the 2024 regular season and would be a new career best.
Will Vest
Will Vest Secures 21st save
Sun, Sep 14, 2025, 8:27 PM
Vest allowed a hit and a walk in a scoreless inning while earning a save over the Marlins on Sunday. He struck out one.
Analysis: Vest had runners on first and second with one out but escaped the jam to close out the 2-0 win. It was his 21st save of the year and first since Aug. 29. He's now delivered 6.1 consecutive scoreless frames, dropping his season ERA from 2.81 to 2.53 in the process. Vest has produced a 67:22 K:BB through 64 innings.
Keider Montero
Keider Montero Cruises to victory
Sun, Sep 14, 2025, 8:22 PM
Motero (5-3) allowed three hits over five scoreless innings Sunday, striking out five and earning a win over the Marlins.
Analysis: Montero gave up three singles and did not allow a runner to reach scoring position. He fell short of a quality start, but tossed 50 strikes on 76 total pitches; it was his highest pitch count since July 25, which was his last MLB appearance before spending just over a month with Triple-A Toledo. Montero now owns a 4.32 ERA with a 63:27 K:BB through 83.1 MLB innings this season. He's lined up for a home start against Atlanta next weekend.
Will Vest
Will Vest Covers two clean innings Saturday
Sun, Sep 14, 2025, 9:30 AM
Vest tossed two scoreless innings of relief in Saturday's 6-4, extra-innings loss to the Marlins. He allowed a hit and a walk, while striking out one.
Analysis: Vest worked clean ninth and tenth innings to preserve a tied game, but the Tigers fell when Rafael Montero allowed three runs in the bottom of the 11th to blow a 4-3 lead. It was just the third appearance of the month for Vest, as the Tigers are now 4-7 in September and not giving the veteran reliever many games to close out. Vest has still pitched well with a 2.57 ERA and 9.4 K/9, and he should remain Detroit's closer, at least for however long Kyle Finnegan (groin) is on the injured list.
Rafael Montero
Rafael Montero Struggles in blown save
Sun, Sep 14, 2025, 9:22 AM
Montero (1-2) allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits while retiring only a single batter to blow a save and take the loss in Saturday's extra-innings contest against the Marlins.
Analysis: With Will Vest having already pitched the ninth and tenth innings, the Tigers had to turn to Montero in the 11th to protect a 4-3 lead. The veteran righty couldn't get the job done in an ineffective performance. Montero has a rough 4.88 ERA overall this season, though he's been better since joining Detroit before the trade deadline, posting a 3.71 ERA across 17 innings so far. He should remain in a middle-relief role with limited fantasy appeal.
