Angel Martinez
Angel Martinez Earns praise from decision-maker
Wed, Mar 25, 2026, 8:40 AM
Cleveland president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti on Tuesday lauded the work Martinez put in during the offseason to become a better hitter, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports. "He worked really hard on his left-handed swing over the course of the winter, and we saw that play dividends in spring training," Antonetti said.
Analysis: Pending any additional moves the team may make to finalize its Opening Day roster, Martinez appears to gave beaten out Stuart Fairchild for the final outfield spot. The switch-hitting Martinez closed the preseason slashing .356/.396/.800 with six doubles, one triple, four home runs, six RBI, three steals and 10 runs scored over 18 contests. Along with his ability to hit from both sides of the plate, Martinez brings defensive versatility and could play second base if needed. "He could be a really valuable member of our team and help us find ways to win games," Antonetti added.
Stuart Fairchild
Stuart Fairchild Bound for Triple-A
Wed, Mar 25, 2026, 8:16 AM
Fairchild is expected to open the regular season at Triple-A Columbus, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Fairchild, who was in camp as a non-roster invitee, appears to have lost out on his bid for a roster spot to Angel Martinez, who raked (1.196 OPS) this spring. The 30-year-old Fairchild has an upward mobility clause in his contract; if another team wants to add him to their 26-man or 40-man roster, the Guardians would have to decide whether they would match the proposition for part ways. Fairchild can play all three outfield spots and could be of value to another club.
Austin Hedges
Austin Hedges Day-to-day after clean X-ray
Tue, Mar 24, 2026, 12:19 PM
Hedges is considered day-to-day after an X-ray on his right hand came back negative, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Hedges had to leave Monday's exhibition against the Diamondbacks after being hit by a pitch. He has a bone bruise but managed to avoid any fractures. Hedges should be healthy enough to open the season as the Guardians' No. 2 catcher behind starter Bo Naylor.
Steven Kwan
Steven Kwan Will play two outfield positions
Tue, Mar 24, 2026, 7:38 AM
Kwan will play both left and center field this season, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Kwan has rotated between the two positions all spring training, and manager Stephen Vogt confirmed over the weekend that the mixed deployment will continue into the regular season. The four-time Gold Glove winner in left field understands that playing center field will help the Guardians overall. Promising prospects, such as Chase DeLauter, CJ Kayfus and George Valera (calf), are best at corner outfield, so Kwan making left field available gives Vogt flexibility.
Chase DeLauter
Chase DeLauter Goes deep twice
Tue, Mar 24, 2026, 7:28 AM
DeLauter went 2-for-2 with two solo home runs and an additional run scored in Monday's spring game against Arizona.
Analysis: DeLauter is putting the final touches on a strong training camp. The 24-year-old outfielder has hit safely in seven consecutive games and is slashing .459/.535/.838 over 14 spring games. He's expected to be the Guardians' primary right fielder.
Slade Cecconi
Slade Cecconi Ready for regular season
Tue, Mar 24, 2026, 7:20 AM
Cecconi allowed one hit and two walks while striking out two over four scoreless innings in Monday's spring start against the Diamondbacks.
Analysis: Cecconi looks like he's ready to make a leap in 2026 after pitching to a 1.62 ERA over 16.2 innings in the Cactus League. Monday's scoreless effort extended his spring streak to nine consecutive scoreless innings. The right-hander is penciled in to start the third game of the regular season Saturday on the road against Seattle.
Austin Hedges
Austin Hedges Exits after HBP
Mon, Mar 23, 2026, 11:14 PM
Hedges left Monday's exhibition against the Diamondbacks after being hit by a pitch on his right hand, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Hedges was hit by a pitch during his lone at-bat of the evening in the ninth inning, and he was unable to continue. He'll presumably be sent for further evaluation and can be considered day-to-day until the team has another update to share.
Angel Martinez
Angel Martinez Likely to make Opening Day roster
Mon, Mar 23, 2026, 7:36 AM
Martinez is expected to make the Opening Day roster, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The Guardians have space for four outfielders with Steven Kwan and Chase DeLauter locks. That leaves Martinez among a group of four competing for the final two spots, but it would be a surprise if Cleveland didn't add him to the 26-man roster after his performance this spring. Martinez, who belted a two-run home run in Sunday's spring game against Cincinnati, is batting .350 (14-for-40) with six doubles, one triple, four home runs and six RBI over 16 games. The other three outfielders in the mix are Stuart Fairchild, CJ Kayfus and George Valera (calf), who is expected to open the regular season on the injured list.
Gavin Williams
Gavin Williams Ready for regular season
Mon, Mar 23, 2026, 7:29 AM
Williams allowed one run on five hits and struck out three over five innings in Sunday's spring start against the Reds.
Analysis: Williams made his final Cactus League tune-up and appears ready for the regular season. He'll follow Opening Day starter Tanner Bibee and pitch Friday against the Mariners. The right-hander had one hiccup this spring but finished on a high note. Williams, who has averaged 4.2 BB/9 over three major-league seasons, walked just two batters over 17.2 innings this spring.
Rhys Hoskins
Rhys Hoskins Secures roster spot
Sun, Mar 22, 2026, 3:54 PM
Hoskins will be included on the Guardians' Opening Day roster, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: The veteran slugger still needs to be officially added to the active roster ahead of Thursday's season opener in Seattle, but that's a procedural move more than anything else. Hoskins had an .817 OPS with three homers in 12 spring training games after spending last season in Milwaukee, where he played in 90 regular-season contests and had a .237/.332/.416 slash line.
Nolan Jones
Nolan Jones Accepts outright assignment
Sun, Mar 22, 2026, 2:00 PM
Jones accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Analysis: The 27-year-old had the ability to reject the assignment and become a free agent, but he'll instead stick in the organization. Jones played in 136 regular-season games for Cleveland last year and had a .211/.296/.304 slash line with five home runs and eight steals.
Pedro Avila
Pedro Avila Back with Guardians
Sun, Mar 22, 2026, 11:38 AM
The Guardians agreed to a minor-league contract with Avila on Sunday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The right-hander was released by the Guardians on Tuesday but quickly returned to the organization on a minor-league pact. Avila spent last season in Japan but had a 3.81 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 82:36 K:BB across 82.2 regular-season innings between the Guardians and Padres in 2024.
Codi Heuer
Codi Heuer Added to 40-man roster, optioned
Sun, Mar 22, 2026, 11:25 AM
The Guardians selected Heuer's contract to the major-league roster Sunday and optioned him to Triple-A Columbus.
Analysis: The 29-year-old righty joined Cleveland as a non-roster invitee in December and grabbed a place on the 40-man roster despite giving up eight runs with an 11:5 K:BB over eight innings during spring training. Heuer made three MLB appearances last season after being sidelined the previous four years due to injuries, and he'll likely need to pitch well for Columbus to get another look in the big leagues.
Tanner Bibee
Tanner Bibee Makes final spring start
Sun, Mar 22, 2026, 10:34 AM
Bibee allowed eight runs on 10 hits while striking out three over 4.2 innings in Saturday's spring start against San Francisco.
Analysis: Bibee retired the first six batters faced before running into the trouble the rest of the way. He allowed two home runs Saturday and five over his final two Cactus League starts. The right-hander upped his pitch count to 70 (49 strikes) in advance of his Opening Day start at Seattle.
Parker Messick
Parker Messick Wins rotation spot
Sat, Mar 21, 2026, 11:39 AM
Messick will begin the regular season in the Guardians' rotation, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The race for the final spot came down to Messick and Logan Allen, and after the latter gave up a dozen runs in just 2.1 frames Friday, the Guardians decided to go with Messick. The 25-year-old southpaw performed well over seven starts during the late stages of the 2025 regular season, recording a 2.72 ERA and 1.31 WHIP alongside a 38:6 K:BB across 39.2 innings. His success has carried over into Cactus League play (3.60 ERA, 1.13 WHIP), though he gave up three solo home runs during his most recent spring outing.
Logan Allen
Logan Allen Loses battle for rotation spot
Sat, Mar 21, 2026, 11:33 AM
The Guardians optioned Allen to Triple-A Columbus on Saturday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Allen surrendered 12 runs on 14 hits and two walks over just 2.1 innings during his Cactus League appearance Friday, which seemingly put the final nail in the coffin for his hopes of making the Opening Day rotation. Parker Messick will instead claim the final spot; meanwhile, Allen will aim to rebound in the minors and earn an in-season promotion.
Logan Allen
Logan Allen Has night to forget
Sat, Mar 21, 2026, 9:41 AM
Allen allowed 12 runs on 14 hits and two walks while striking out two over 2.1 innings in Friday's spring game against Seattle.
Analysis: After Allen emerged from a first-inning jam unharmed, his night went sideways. He was twice removed in the middle of innings only to return later, as allowed under spring rules. Allen's night was finally over in the fourth when he gave up two runs. The positives are four up-and-downs, 85 pitches thrown and that is wasn't a regular-season game. The left-hander finished the Cactus League on a sour note, having allowed 18 runs on 21 hits and five walks over his final five innings. Allen is part of the Guardians' projected starting rotation; however, it should be noted the team evaluated six potential starters this spring, and Allen's hold on a rotation spot could be tenuous.
Hunter Gaddis
Hunter Gaddis Slated to open season on IL
Fri, Mar 20, 2026, 5:36 PM
Gaddis (forearm) is highly likely to begin the regular season on the injured list, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Gaddis has been making steady progress since reporting forearm tightness at the beginning of March and was even cleared to throw live BP earlier this week. However, he'll likely start the new campaign on the sidelines, which would create opportunities for players like Shawn Armstrong, Erik Sabrowski or Matt Festa to see high-leverage work.
George Valera
George Valera Expected to start season on IL
Fri, Mar 20, 2026, 5:30 PM
Valera (calf) is highly likely to start the regular season on the injured list, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Valera has been dealing with a strained left calf since early March, and it looks like the issue will put him on the sidelines to start the regular season. The 25-year-old left-hander had been competing with the likes of Chase DeLauter and CJ Kayfus for a starting spot in the outfield.
Petey Halpin
Petey Halpin Sent to Triple-A
Fri, Mar 20, 2026, 5:26 PM
The Guardians optioned Halpin to Triple-A Columbus on Friday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Halpin was in contention for a spot on the Opening Day roster, but it looks like the 23-year-old will start the new season in the minor leagues. Halpin has gone 8-for-30 (.267) with two home runs, two doubles, eight runs scored and five RBI during spring training. He could factor into the Guardians' 2026 plans as the season progresses, but Cleveland has plenty of depth in the outfield at this point.
