Andrew Abbott
Andrew Abbott Fans seven during loss
Tue, Sep 16, 2025, 10:57 PM
Abbott (9-7) took the loss against the Cardinals on Tuesday, allowing three runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out seven.
Analysis: The left-hander gave up an early sacrifice fly after opening the game with consecutive hits in the first inning before surrendering a two-run homer to Thomas Saggese in the third, and he received no run support from the Reds' offense leading to the loss Tuesday. Abbott needed 96 pitches to get through 4.2 frames, marking the third time in his last five outings he's failed to complete five innings -- a stretch marked by inconsistency despite flashes of dominance, such as his previous start, when he went eight strong innings against San Diego while allowing just one run. The 26-year-old will take a 2.88 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 143:42 K:BB across 156.1 innings into his next scheduled start against the Cubs.
Spencer Steer
Spencer Steer Feels good after chiropractor visit
Tue, Sep 16, 2025, 4:16 PM
Reds manager Terry Francona said Tuesday that Steer (neck) "feels great" after getting a chiropractic adjustment, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Analysis: Steer was scratched from Monday's lineup in St. Louis due to neck spasms and remains out of the lineup Tuesday, but it sounds like he could be available off the bench. Sal Stewart is receiving a fourth straight start at first base Tuesday.
Zack Littell
Zack Littell Allows four runs in no-decision
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 11:19 PM
Littell did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing four runs on five hits and no walks over 5.2 innings against St. Louis. He struck out three.
Analysis: Littell ran out of steam Monday, giving up three of his four runs in the sixth inning before being pulled. Since being dealt at the trade deadline, he hasn't replicated his Tampa Bay form, where he logged a 3.58 ERA across 22 starts and 133.1 innings, instead posting a 4.74 ERA over eight starts and 43.2 frames with Cincinnati.
Ke'Bryan Hayes
Ke'Bryan Hayes Late entry into lineup
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 5:40 PM
Hayes will start at third base and bat eighth in Monday's contest in St. Louis.
Analysis: Hayes had been scheduled for a day off, but he's been added to the lineup after Spencer Steer (neck) was scratched. Sal Stewart will move from third base to first base to cover for Steer, while Hayes will occupy the hot corner.
Spencer Steer
Spencer Steer Scratched with neck spasms
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 5:39 PM
Steer was scratched from Monday's lineup in St. Louis due to neck spasms.
Analysis: Steer had already been losing playing time to Sal Stewart, and now he has an injury to contend with. To this point, he should be considered day-to-day. Stewart will shift over from third base to first base Monday and Ke'Bryan Hayes will enter the lineup at the hot corner.
Will Benson
Will Benson Sitting after three straight starts
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 2:55 PM
Benson is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals.
Analysis: After making starts at three different outfield spots and going 3-for-8 with two home runs, one triple, one walk and four RBI during the Reds' weekend series in Sacramento, the left-handed-hitting Benson will hit the bench while St. Louis sends southpaw Matthew Liberatore to the hill. Despite his big weekend, Benson is still likely to be more of a part-time presence in the lineup versus right-handed pitching while all of Austin Hays, Gavin Lux, TJ Friedl and Noelvi Marte are available.
Gavin Lux
Gavin Lux Idle against southpaw
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 2:52 PM
Lux is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals.
Analysis: With a left-hander (Matthew Liberatore) on the hill for St. Louis, the left-handed-hitting Lux will head to the bench after he had started in each of the Reds' previous eight games. Miguel Andujar will serve as Cincinnati's designated hitter in Lux's stead.
Ke'Bryan Hayes
Ke'Bryan Hayes Resting in series opener
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 2:51 PM
Hayes is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals.
Analysis: After going 0-for-7 with a walk over the final two contests of the Reds' weekend series in Sacramento, Hayes will get a chance to catch his breath as Cincinnati kicks off a three-game set in St. Louis. Sal Stewart will step in for Hayes at third base and will bat fifth.
Sal Stewart
Sal Stewart Taking over at first base
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 8:20 AM
Stewart started at first base and went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 7-4 loss to the Athletics.
Analysis: Stewart launched his third homer in 10 games since being called up when rosters expanded in September. He's started four of the last five games and six of the last seven at first base, as the prospect has nudged Spencer Steer out of the way. The Reds, who were swept by the A's, are still in the hunt for a playoff spot, but manager Terry Francona appears to be juggling two missions -- develop young talent while not abandoning the quest for the postseason.
Will Benson
Will Benson Goes deep again
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 7:38 AM
Benson started in left field and went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 7-4 loss to the Athletics.
Analysis: Benson upped Cincinnati's lead to 3-0 with his second-inning home run. He's started four of the last five contests and gone deep three times during that stretch. The bump in playing time came out of nowhere for Benson, who rode the bench for the first 20 games after being called up in mid-August.
Rhett Lowder
Rhett Lowder Next rehab outing scheduled
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 7:27 AM
Lowder (oblique/forearm) will make his next rehab start Friday for Triple-A Louisville, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Lowder began a rehab assignment Saturday, throwing 34 pitches over two innings and allowing one run for Louisville. Per Mark Sheldon of MLB.com, Reds manager Terry Francona has been non-committal about Lowder returning from the 60-day injured list before the end of the regular season to aid the team in its bid for a wild-card spot, but that could change if he performs well in his upcoming rehab start. Even if he comes off the IL for the final week of the season, Lowder would likely be deployed out of the bullpen.
Austin Hays
Austin Hays Idle for series finale
Sun, Sep 14, 2025, 2:03 PM
Hays is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics.
Analysis: Hays will get a chance to catch his breath Sunday after he had started in each of the Reds' last 12 games, during which he slashed .292/.300/.583 with four home runs, one stolen base, 10 RBI and seven runs. Will Benson will spell Hays in left field and will bat sixth.
Tyler Stephenson
Tyler Stephenson Taking seat Sunday
Sun, Sep 14, 2025, 2:01 PM
Stephenson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics.
Analysis: Stephenson will be given the afternoon off after he started behind the plate in each of the Reds' last four games while going 3-for-15 with two home runs, a walk, five RBI and three runs. Jose Trevino will handle catching duties Sunday.
Spencer Steer
Spencer Steer Losing out to Sal Stewart
Sun, Sep 14, 2025, 1:59 PM
Steer is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics.
Analysis: On the bench for the fourth time in five games, Steer appears to have faded into a bench role while the Reds have opened up more opportunities for rookie Sal Stewart, who has produced a .714 OPS since getting called up from Triple-A Louisville on Sept. 1. Over that same two-week stretch, Steer has matched Stewart with a .714 OPS, so Steer could be just one Stewart cold streak away from regaining playing time.
Rhett Lowder
Rhett Lowder Works two innings in rehab game
Sun, Sep 14, 2025, 7:35 AM
Lowder (oblique) allowed one run on two hits and struck out two over two innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Louisville on Saturday. He also hit a batter.
Analysis: Lowder began a rehab assignment with the Bats, who have enough games left in the regular season for the right-hander to get in another start. Beyond that, Lowder will pitch in the Arizona Fall League and have what the Reds described earlier as a normal offseason of preparation for 2026.
Matt McLain
Matt McLain Getting rest Saturday
Sat, Sep 13, 2025, 5:57 PM
McLain isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Athletics.
Analysis: McLain will get a breather Saturday after going 9-for-32 (.281) with a homer, four RBI and six runs scored through his first 10 games of September. Gavin Lux will start at the keystone instead, moving TJ Friedl into the DH spot and opening up center field for Will Benson.
Spencer Steer
Spencer Steer Idle Saturday
Sat, Sep 13, 2025, 5:54 PM
Steer isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Athletics.
Analysis: Steer will take a seat on the bench Saturday after going 1-for-4 with a steal and two strikeouts in Friday's series opener. Sal Stewart will fill in as Cincinnati's first baseman and bat sixth.
Rhett Lowder
Rhett Lowder Beginning assignment Saturday
Sat, Sep 13, 2025, 11:37 AM
Lowder (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville on Saturday.
Analysis: Lowder has sat out the entire season while working his way back from injuries to his forearm and, more recently, his oblique. The Reds haven't ruled out a late-season return for the 23-year-old righty, though he would need a relatively quick rehab assignment to have time to make an appearance for the Reds before the end of the season.
Noelvi Marte
Noelvi Marte Sitting Friday
Fri, Sep 12, 2025, 4:20 PM
Marte is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Athletics.
Analysis: Marte will yield to Will Benson in right field on Friday for the second time in three games. Marte is in the midst of a 1-for-21 (.048) slump, and he's struck out 13 times during that stretch.
Yosver Zulueta
Yosver Zulueta Pushed back to Triple-A
Thu, Sep 11, 2025, 12:11 PM
The Reds optioned Zulueta to Triple-A Louisville on Thursday.
Analysis: With Graham Ashcraft (forearm) and Chase Burns (elbow) both returning from the injured list Thursday, the Reds will move Zulueta and Lyon Richardson to Triple-A in order to create roster space. Zulueta gave up two runs over two innings during his latest stint with Cincinnati, elevating his big-league ERA to 6.14 through 7.1 frames.
