Jake Bennett
Jake Bennett Another start awaits Thursday
Wed, May 6, 2026, 4:45 PM
Bennett is slated to start Thursday's game against the Rays at Fenway Park, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: The Red Sox welcomed Sonny Gray (hamstring) from the injured list Wednesday, but Bennett will wind up sticking around in the big-league rotation for another turn while the status of Ranger Suarez (hamstring) remains in the flux. Boston is still leaving the door open for Suarez to start either of the final two games of the series versus the Rays, and if that comes to pass, Bennett could be headed back to Triple-A Worcester following Thursday's outing. The 25-year-old lefty turned in a strong performance in his MLB debut last Friday, striking out three while limiting the Astros to one run on five hits and two walks over five innings en route to picking up a win.
Undergoes Tommy John surgery
Wed, May 6, 2026, 3:56 PM
Valera underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Tuesday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Valera injured his elbow in mid-April while pitching for High-A Greenville, and after an MRI and several consultations, he opted for surgery. The operation will likely knock the 19-year-old out until the second half of the 2027 season. Valera held a 1.93 ERA and 17:4 K:BB over 9.1 frames with Greenville before getting hurt.
Alec Gamboa
Alec Gamboa Heading back to Triple-A
Wed, May 6, 2026, 2:39 PM
The Red Sox optioned Gamboa to Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday.
Analysis: After being called up from Worcester on Monday, Gamboa will head back to the minors just two days later with Boston needing to clear a spot on the roster for right-hander Sonny Gray (hamstring), who was activated ahead of his start Wednesday in Detroit. Gamboa made his MLB debut in Tuesday's 10-3 win over the Tigers, striking out two batters over an inning of relief. The 29-year-old left-hander will likely move back into a starting role at Worcester.
Sonny Gray
Sonny Gray Activated ahead of start
Wed, May 6, 2026, 2:37 PM
The Red Sox reinstated Gray (hamstring) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday in Detroit.
Analysis: Left-hander Alec Gamboa was optioned to Triple-A Worcester to make room on the 26-man active roster for Gray, who ended up missing the minimum 15 days after being shelved April 21 due to a right hamstring strain. He was never shut down from throwing during his time on the IL and didn't require a rehab assignment prior to being activated. Gray should be ready to handle a normal workload as he takes the hill for Boston for the sixth time this season, after going 2-1 with a 4.30 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB in 23 innings over his first five starts.
Wilyer Abreu
Wilyer Abreu Strong showing in Detroit
Wed, May 6, 2026, 8:28 AM
Abreu went 3-for-4 with a walk, a solo home run, a second run scored and a stolen base in Tuesday's 10-3 win over the Tigers.
Analysis: The 26-year-old outfielder led the Red Sox in times on base while going back-to-back with Willson Contreras to lead off the fourth inning against Framber Valdez, a power display that prompted the frustrated southpaw to hit Trevor Story with a 94.4 mph fastball on his next pitch and sparked the benches to clear. Abreu has been a bright spot for Boston over the last couple weeks, slashing .362/.483/.532 over the last 13 games with two doubles, two homers, two steals, five RBI and seven runs.
Brayan Bello
Brayan Bello Sharp as primary pitcher Tuesday
Wed, May 6, 2026, 8:22 AM
Bello (2-4) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over seven relief innings in a 10-3 rout of the Tigers. He struck out seven.
Analysis: Working as a bulk reliever for the first time in 2026, the right-hander entered the game to begin the second inning after Jovani Moran had given up two runs as the opener. Bello responded with his best performance of the year, setting new season highs in innings and strikeouts while firing 66 of 94 pitches for strikes. It was a timely bounce-back effort, as Bello's rotation spot appears to be hanging by a thread with Sonny Gray (hamstring) due back Wednesday and Payton Tolle pitching well. Even after Tuesday's strong outing, Bello carries a 7.44 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 24:16 K:BB through 32.2 innings. He'll need to string together another couple good starts to keep his job, beginning with a trip to the mound at home this weekend against the Rays.
Ceddanne Rafaela
Ceddanne Rafaela Homers in win
Wed, May 6, 2026, 8:19 AM
Rafaela went 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and an additional run scored in Tuesday's 10-3 win over the Tigers.
Analysis: Rafaela launched his second home run of the season, a three-run shot in first inning to put Boston up early. The multi-hit effort was his fourth in the last nine games, during which Rafaela is slashing .342/.375/.553 with four extra-base hits, six RBI, one steal and five runs scored.
Sonny Gray
Sonny Gray Expected back Wednesday
Tue, May 5, 2026, 5:08 PM
Manager Chad Tracy said Tuesday that "all things are pointing toward" Gray (hamstring) being reinstated off the injured list to start Wednesday's game against the Tigers, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: The veteran right-hander threw a bullpen session Monday in Detroit that apparently went well, setting himself up to come off the IL for Wednesday's series finale. Gray landed on the shelf April 21 due to the hamstring strain, and he shouldn't face significant workload limitations in his return to the big-league mound given the brevity of the absence.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Dealing with sprain, may avoid IL
Tue, May 5, 2026, 4:16 PM
Anthony was diagnosed with a sprained right wrist after undergoing an MRI on Tuesday and may not require a trip to the injured list, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The 21-year-old was removed from Monday's game in Detroit due to the injury and returned to Boston on Tuesday to visit a hand specialist, who apparently provided an encouraging diagnosis. Anthony still seems likely to miss at least another game or two, but he could be back in action in the near future if he recovers well over the next couple days.
Masataka Yoshida
Masataka Yoshida Enters mid-game Monday
Tue, May 5, 2026, 8:29 AM
Yoshida entered Monday's 5-4 win over the Tigers to play left field after Roman Anthony (wrist) was removed from the game. Yoshida went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Analysis: Where former manager Alex Cora tried to weave Yoshida into starting lineups more consistently, interim manager Chad Tracy sees him more as a weapon off the bench -- the outfielder is 2-for-5 with two walks as a pinch hitter. He's started just once in the eight games since Boston's managerial change; however, with Anthony heading back to Boston for more testing, Yoshida could slip into the starting lineup Tuesday and/or Wednesday in left field or as the designated hitter. In limited run in 2026, Yoshida is slashing .296/.415/.370 with 10 walks, four doubles, five RBI and six runs scored over 65 plate appearances.
Sonny Gray
Sonny Gray Completes side session Monday
Tue, May 5, 2026, 8:06 AM
Gray (hamstring) threw a bullpen session Monday that went well, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Gray's right hamstring has responded well to multiple throwing sessions over the past week, which likely sets the right-hander up to return from the 15-day injured list to start Wednesday's series finale in Detroit. Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy plans to meet with Gray and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow before confirming Wednesday's scheduled starter. If the Red Sox elect to wait a little bit longer before activating Gray, Jake Bennett would likely be the top alternative to start Wednesday.
Justin Slaten
Justin Slaten Begins rehab stint
Tue, May 5, 2026, 7:48 AM
Slaten (oblique) allowed one hit and struck out two over a scoreless inning for Double-A Portland on Sunday.
Analysis: Slaten opened the rehab assignment by serving as a game opener for the Sea Dogs. The right-hander's next outing will be Tuesday or Wednesday at Triple-A Worcester, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. It's uncertain if Slaten will require more rehab outings beyond what's coming up in the next two days. He last pitched for Boston on April 4.
Payton Tolle
Payton Tolle Dominates for first MLB win
Mon, May 4, 2026, 11:28 PM
Tolle (1-1) earned the win Monday against the Tigers, allowing two unearned runs on one hit and one walk while striking out eight over seven innings.
Analysis: Tolle was dominant from the start, retiring 15 of the first 16 hitters he faced. The only damage against him came via two unearned runs in the sixth inning after a walk and hit-by-pitch, followed by a throwing error. Otherwise, Tolle was in full command, working efficiently (83 pitches) into the seventh inning for the first time in his career while piling up eight strikeouts. After being denied wins in previous strong outings, the 23-year-old finally secured his first MLB victory and, given this performance, there's no reason he shouldn't see multiple more starts in the rotation. Tolle is scheduled to start against Tampa Bay this weekend.
Brayan Bello
Brayan Bello Working as bulk reliever Tuesday
Mon, May 4, 2026, 8:49 PM
Bello will be deployed as the bulk reliever for Tuesday's game against Detroit, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: Bello has struggled to work deep into outings in the early going of the 2026 campaign, so the Red Sox are electing to utilize an opener Tuesday. The right-hander, who owns a 9.17 ERA and 2.15 WHIP over his last four appearances (17.2 innings), will follow Jovani Moran.
Jovani Moran
Jovani Moran Working as opener Tuesday
Mon, May 4, 2026, 8:45 PM
Moran will serve as the opener for Tuesday's game against the Tigers, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: Moran will presumably work the first inning or so before making way for Brayan Bello, who is expected to serve as the team's bulk reliever Tuesday. Moran is off to a strong start to the 2026 season and has delivered a 2.33 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 17 strikeouts across 19.1 innings.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Set to visit hand specialist
Mon, May 4, 2026, 8:36 PM
X-rays on Anthony's right wrist returned negative, but he'll fly to Boston on Tuesday morning to see a hand specialist, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: This appears to be a precautionary measure by the club to ensure Anthony avoided a significant injury. Boston is scheduled to play two more games in Detroit, so the 21-year-old will presumably miss the remainder of the series, with the hope that he'll be back in the starting lineup Thursday against Tampa Bay. Masatake Yoshida will be a candidate to see more at-bats in Anthony's absence.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Diagnosed with wrist injury
Mon, May 4, 2026, 6:10 PM
Anthony was removed from Monday's game against the Tigers due to right wrist discomfort, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Anthony appeared to tweak his right wrist during his plate appearance in the first inning and was replaced by Masataka Yoshida in the second. Anthony will undergo more tests on his wrist to determine the severity of the injury, by which time the Red Sox should provide an update on the young outfielder's status moving forward.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Exits with possible wrist injury
Mon, May 4, 2026, 5:43 PM
Anthony was removed from Monday's game versus the Tigers with a possible wrist injury, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Anthony tweaked something on a swing during his first plate appearance of the game in the first inning. He finished that at-bat but was then removed in favor of Masataka Yoshida. The Red Sox should have an update on Anthony's condition soon.
Receives first big-league call-up
Mon, May 4, 2026, 2:32 PM
The Red Sox selected Gamboa's contract from Triple-A Worcester on Monday.
Analysis: Back in December, Gamboa signed a minor-league deal with Boston that contained an upward mobility clause that could be triggered if he wasn't promoted by May 1. With Gamboa electing to exercise that clause, the Red Sox will add him to the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster rather than risk losing him to another organization. The 29-year-old southpaw had been working out of the Triple-A rotation, but he'll likely be relegated to a low-leverage, multi-inning relief role for Boston after posting a 6.23 ERA and 1.69 WHIP across 13 frames for Worcester.
Danny Coulombe
Danny Coulombe Heads to IL with neck injury
Mon, May 4, 2026, 2:27 PM
The Red Sox placed Coulombe on the 15-day injured list Monday with cervical spasms.
Analysis: It's unclear how long his neck has been bothering him, but Coulombe last pitched Friday. The lefty has yielded five runs with a 5:3 K:BB over eight innings out of the Boston bullpen this season. His spot on the roster and in the bullpen will be filled by Alec Gamboa.
