Rob Refsnyder
Rob Refsnyder Not in lineup Thursday
Thu, Sep 18, 2025, 9:45 AM
Refsnyder is not in the lineup for Thursday's contest versus the Athletics.
Analysis: After starting each of the last two games against right-handed pitching (and four straight overall), the right-handed-hitting Refsnyder will retreat to the bench for Thursday's series finale against Athletics righty J.T. Ginn. Nate Eaton will play right field and bat eighth for Boston.
Romy Gonzalez
Romy Gonzalez Exiting starting nine
Thu, Sep 18, 2025, 9:42 AM
Gonzalez is absent from the lineup for Thursday's tilt against the Athletics.
Analysis: The right-handed-hitting Gonzalez has seen more and more reps versus righties lately -- in addition to his regular starts against lefties -- but he'll take a seat for this one as the Athletics send righty J.T. Ginn to the bump. David Hamilton is at second base and batting seventh for the Red Sox.
Carlos Narvaez
Carlos Narvaez Sitting out for day game
Thu, Sep 18, 2025, 9:39 AM
Narvaez is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Athletics.
Analysis: It's a routine day off for Narvaez, who started each of the last five contests (four at catcher, one at designated hitter). Connor Wong will do the catching during Thursday's matinee.
Masataka Yoshida
Masataka Yoshida Knocks in two in win
Thu, Sep 18, 2025, 8:55 AM
Yoshida went 2-for-4 with two RBI in Wednesday's 5-4 extra-inning win over the Athletics.
Analysis: Yoshida, who entered the game with a .618 OPS through 44 games, batted cleanup and delivered a run-scoring single in the first inning. He later hustled out an infield single with the bases loaded to plate a run in the fifth. His season numbers are underwhelming, but Yoshida is making a modest impact in September. He's gone 10-for-32 (.313) with two doubles and six RBI over 10 games this month.
Rob Refsnyder
Rob Refsnyder Homers in win
Thu, Sep 18, 2025, 8:44 AM
Refsnyder went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 5-4 extra-inning win over the Athletics.
Analysis: Refsnyder picked up a rare start against a right-hander and homered in the second inning to give Boston a 2-1 lead. The blast, which caromed off the Carlton Fisk pole in left field, was Refsnyder's ninth of the season. He's been a steady contributor in the 12 games played since returning from an oblique injury in August, which has been helpful considering the Red Sox are without Roman Anthony (oblique) and Wilyer Abreu (calf). Refsnyder has a .992 OPS with three doubles, three homers, six walks, eight RBI and six runs scored since his activation off the IL.
Lucas Giolito
Lucas Giolito Struggles with command vs. A's
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 11:17 PM
Giolito didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's win against the Athletics, allowing four runs on five hits and five walks while striking out five over 4.1 innings.
Analysis: Giolito worked around constant traffic early, stranding multiple runners to limit the damage through four frames, but it caught up to him in the fifth. After a single and two walks loaded the bases, the right-hander was lifted, and all three inherited runners came around to score. The rough outing snapped a strong stretch in which he had posted a 1.46 ERA and 22:10 K:BB across 24.2 innings over his previous four starts. Giolito is slated to take the mound against the Blue Jays next, a tough assignment given Toronto leads MLB in runs scored in the back half of the season.
Payton Tolle
Payton Tolle Shifting to bullpen role
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 3:11 PM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Tolle will be used out of the bullpen for the remainder of the season, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Connelly Early is remaining in the rotation and Kyle Harrison will join the rotation this weekend, leaving Tolle to fill a relief role the rest of the way. All three of Tolle's appearances for the Red Sox to this point have come as a starter, and he's posted a 7.84 ERA and 12:6 K:BB over 10.1 innings.
Wilyer Abreu
Wilyer Abreu Day-to-day, eyeing weekend return
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 3:06 PM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Abreu (calf) isn't ready to return from the 10-day injured list, but the skipper is "hopeful" that the outfielder will be ready for activation at some point during the team's weekend series at Tampa Bay, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: MLB.com reported Saturday that Abreu was running at about 85 percent intensity as he works his way back from a right calf strain. Per Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, Cora noted that Abreu was scheduled to do some sprinting Wednesday, so if the 26-year-old is able to run at closer to 100 percent speed in that workout, it could be enough for him to return to action this weekend. The Red Sox have been leaning on a committee of Rob Refsnyder, Nate Eaton and Nick Sogard in right field while the 2024 Gold Glove Award winner has been on the shelf.
Kyle Harrison
Kyle Harrison In line to start Saturday
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 3:02 PM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Harrison will start Saturday's game against the Rays in Tampa, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Harrison will move into the rotation as a replacement for rookie lefty Payton Tolle, whom Cora said would be used in the bullpen for the remainder of the season. After getting called up from Triple-A Worcester last week, Harrison made his Red Sox debut out of the bullpen Sept. 10 in Sacramento, striking out two over three scoreless innings. Though he had been serving in a starting role for Worcester, Harrison hadn't covered five frames in an outing since Aug. 19, so the Red Sox may not be counting on the lefty working deep into his start Saturday.
Connelly Early
Connelly Early Starting on four days' rest Sunday
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 1:29 PM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Early will start Sunday's series finale in Tampa against the Rays, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Early will unsurprisingly stick around in the rotation for a third turn after looking sharp through his first two outings in the majors, both of which came against the Athletics. Between the two starts, the 23-year-old rookie punched out 18 batters and allowed just one earned run on 10 hits and one walk across his first 10.1 big-league innings. The left-hander will have less time than usual to recover ahead of Sunday's start; he'll be taking the hill on four days' rest for the first time in the majors and for just the third time all season, including his stints with Triple-A Worcester and Double-A Portland. After Sunday's outing, Early will likely make one final start the following weekend in Detroit as the Red Sox look to lock down an AL wild-card spot.
Rob Refsnyder
Rob Refsnyder Making fourth consecutive start
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 1:26 PM
Refsnyder will start in right field and bat sixth in Wednesday's game against the Athletics.
Analysis: The right-handed-hitting Refsnyder traditionally sees his playing time versus lefties. However, injuries to Roman Anthony (oblique) and Wilyer Abreu (calf) have afforded Refsnyder some reps against right-handed pitching, as he'll be making his second straight start versus a righty and fourth consecutive start overall. The 34-year-old Refsnyder is slashing .303/.410/.576 in 11 contests since returning from the injured list Aug. 28.
Nate Eaton
Nate Eaton Not in Boston lineup
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 1:20 PM
Eaton is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Athletics.
Analysis: Eaton had started five of the last six tilts, but he'll begin Wednesday's festivities on the bench. Rob Refsnyder will handle right field and bat sixth for the Red Sox.
Nick Sogard
Nick Sogard Not in Wednesday's lineup
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 1:18 PM
Sogard is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Athletics.
Analysis: Sogard had started five of the last seven tilts, seeing action at both second base and right field. He'll take a seat Wednesday, as Romy Gonzalez will occupy the keystone and Rob Refsnyder will patrol right field.
Connelly Early
Connelly Early Impresses again Tuesday
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 8:37 AM
Early allowed one run on five hits and no walks while striking out seven in 5.1 innings Tuesday against the Athletics. He did not factor into the decision.
Analysis: Early was phenomenal again in his second career major-league start, both of which have come against the Athletics. He generated 14 whiffs and was pounding the zone with a 70 percent strike rate on 80 pitches. Early also tied the Red Sox record with 18 strikeouts through his first two career starts. He was pulled for Greg Weissert with a runner on first after pitching into the sixth and Weissert would allow the runner to score on a double, spoiling Early's chances for the win. Early has done enough to continue on in the rotation and lines up for a road start versus the Rays this weekend.
Trevor Story
Trevor Story Reaches 30 steals
Wed, Sep 17, 2025, 7:52 AM
Story went 3-for-4 and stole two bases in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Athletics.
Analysis: Story stole bags after singling in the first and third innings. The two thefts upped his season total to a career-high 30. More impressive, no backstop has been able to catch him stealing yet in 2025. This marks the fourth time since the expansion era began in 1961 that a player has started a season with 30 straight successful attempts.
Wilyer Abreu
Wilyer Abreu Not ready to come off IL yet
Tue, Sep 16, 2025, 3:14 PM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that Abreu felt some soreness in his right calf after his recent heavy workload and it's not clear when the outfielder will be activated from the 10-day injured list, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Abreu's activation was considered imminent and likely to happen at some point during Boston's series against the Athletics that runs through Thursday. While his return could still occur any day now, it appears more up in the air than it had been. Abreu has been sidelined since mid-August.
Payton Tolle
Payton Tolle Appears pegged for bulk relief
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 11:21 AM
The Red Sox could use Tolle in a bulk-relief role over the final two weeks of the regular season, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Tolle made an abbreviated start last week versus the Athletics, allowing two runs over two innings. Lucas Giolito and Brayan Bello have both been moved up ahead of Tolle to start Wednesday and Thursday against the Athletics, respectively, on regular rest. While Tolle could conceivably receive another start this weekend versus the Rays, a more likelier scenario is that both he and Kyle Harrison serve as multi-inning relievers or work as a tandem when the fifth spot in the rotation comes up. Tolle struck out eight and yielded just two runs over 5.1 frames in his major-league debut Aug. 29, but he's permitted seven runs with a 4:4 K:BB across five innings in two outings since then.
Garrett Whitlock
Garrett Whitlock Shuts down threat
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 9:08 AM
Whitlock allowed one hit and struck out three over a scoreless inning in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Yankees.
Analysis: The Yankees had clawed their way back from a 6-0 deficit in the first inning and threatened in the eighth, when Aaron Judge led off with a single. Whitlock then shut it down and earned his 24th hold, getting three consecutive punchouts. It was the ninth consecutive scoreless outing for the reliever, who has allowed nine hits and two walks while striking out 14 over 10 innings during the streak.
Romy Gonzalez
Romy Gonzalez Extends hit streak
Mon, Sep 15, 2025, 9:03 AM
Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Yankees.
Analysis: Gonzalez extended a hit streak to 14 games and did it early with a run-scoring double as part of Boston's six-run first inning. He's batting .434 (23-for-56) with a .954 OPS and 10 RBI during the streak. He was primarily a regular against left-handers earlier in the season, but due to injuries and slumping teammates, Gonzalez has recently been given opportunities against righties.
Carlos Narvaez
Carlos Narvaez Caps early rally with homer
Sun, Sep 14, 2025, 9:36 PM
Narvaez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Yankees.
Analysis: The Red Sox rallied in the first inning, but the bases were clear after a pair of run-generating outs. That's when Narvaez homered to provide Boston's sixth and final run, which ended up being more than enough for the win. The catcher has gone deep five times over his last 22 games, batting .254 (18-for-71) in that span while adding 12 RBI. On the year, he's up to a .248/.318/.429 slash line with 14 homers, 45 RBI, 50 runs scored, 25 doubles and a stolen base through 109 contests.
