Jarren Duran
Jarren Duran Remains at leadoff
Mon, Apr 27, 2026, 8:39 AM
Duran batted leadoff and went 0-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 5-3 win over the Orioles.
Analysis: Duran remained the leadoff hitter even with the return of Roman Anthony from a sore back. Anthony has been Boston's primary leadoff batter this season. It was the third time in the last five games that Duran was atop the order, all coming against right-handers. With a managerial change -- Chad Tracy replaced Alex Cora following Saturday's game -- more changes could be coming.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Dropped to third in order
Mon, Apr 27, 2026, 8:36 AM
Anthony batted third and went 0-for-3 with a walk in Sunday's 5-3 win over Baltimore.
Analysis: Anthony returned to action after missing four games due to a sore back. After serving as Boston's primary leadoff hitter to open the season, he was dropped to third in order in the first game under the leadership of interim manager Chad Tracy. Jarren Duran worked out of the leadoff spot for the Red Sox.
Payton Tolle
Payton Tolle Sticking around for another start
Sun, Apr 26, 2026, 5:05 PM
Tolle is slated to make his next start Tuesday against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre, Chris Henrique of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.
Analysis: Tolle's inclusion in the rotation for at least one more turn was a foregone conclusion after the 23-year-old lefty dazzled in his 2026 MLB debut this past Thursday. While making a start in place of the injured Sonny Gray (hamstring), Tolle racked up 11 punchouts and allowed just one earned run on three hits and one walk over six innings in a no-decision against the Yankees. Gray could be ready to return from the IL when first eligible May 6 or soon thereafter, but the Red Sox may still be willing to keep Tolle around in the rotation if he continues to pitch well and/or if Brayan Bello (9.00 ERA, 2.27 WHIP in 22 innings this season) continues to languish.
Aroldis Chapman
Aroldis Chapman Nabs fifth save
Sun, Apr 26, 2026, 4:05 PM
Chapman earned the save in Sunday's 5-3 win over Baltimore, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning.
Analysis: Chapman made easy work of the Orioles to close out the Red Sox's win Sunday, retiring the side on just seven pitches. The left-hander is a perfect 5-for-5 in save chances to start the year. Chapman's given up just one run through nine appearances (8.2 innings) while posting a 0.92 WHIP with 10 strikeouts.
Connelly Early
Connelly Early Grabs second win
Sun, Apr 26, 2026, 4:01 PM
Early (2-1) earned the win Sunday over the Orioles, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over 6.2 innings. He struck out four.
Analysis: Early held the Orioles scoreless through his first four frames, ultimately completing a season-high 6.2 innings en route to his second win and quality start this season. The 24-year-old Early has now held opponents to two runs or fewer in five of his six outings. His ERA sits at 2.84 with a 1.20 WHIP and 28:14 K:BB over 31.2 innings. Early is currently scheduled to face the Astros at home his next time out.
Trevor Story
Trevor Story Out of lineup Sunday
Sun, Apr 26, 2026, 11:31 AM
Story isn't in Boston's starting lineup Sunday against Baltimore, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Story has struggled to a .532 OPS and a 31.1 percent strikeout rate through 119 plate appearances this season, but he's kept an everyday role in the lineup. Boston shook up its coaching staff following Saturday's win, and Story voiced his displeasure with that decision, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. It's not clear if that has anything to do with his absence from the lineup Sunday. Andruw Monasterio is drawing a start at shortstop in Story's stead.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Back in action Sunday
Sun, Apr 26, 2026, 11:26 AM
Anthony (back) is starting at DH and batting third Sunday against Baltimore, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Anthony missed the past four games due to a sore back but is evidently feeling well enough to return to the lineup. The 21-year-old had exclusively batted leadoff this season, but he's slotting into the third spot in the order in his return to action. The Red Sox shook up their coaching staff Saturday evening, but it remains to be seen if that will result in any significant changes to the lineup.
Caleb Durbin
Caleb Durbin Big day in Saturday's rout
Sat, Apr 25, 2026, 5:15 PM
Durbin went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, a home run, three runs scored, three RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's 17-1 win over the Orioles.
Analysis: The long ball, a two-run shot in the ninth inning off position playing Weston Wilson, and the steal were each the first of the season for Durbin. The 26-year-old third baseman has had a tough start to his first season with Boston, but he may be getting his feet under him -- Durbin's batting just .237 (9-for-38) over his last 11 games, but six of his hits (five doubles and a homer) have gone for extra bases.
Willson Contreras
Willson Contreras Drives in five in Baltimore
Sat, Apr 25, 2026, 5:06 PM
Contreras went 2-for-4 with a walk, a home run, two runs scored and five RBI in Saturday's 17-1 rout of the Orioles.
Analysis: The veteran first baseman took position player Weston Wilson deep for a three-run shot in the ninth inning, part of a 10-run final frame for the Red Sox. It was Contreras' fifth homer of the year, and through 26 games he's slashing .250/.369/.435 with 12 runs and 17 RBI.
Andruw Monasterio
Andruw Monasterio Three XBH in Saturday's rout
Sat, Apr 25, 2026, 5:03 PM
Monasterio went 3-for-6 with two doubles, a home run, three runs scored and four RBI in Saturday's 17-1 win over the Orioles.
Analysis: Batting fifth as the DH, Monasterio banged out extra-base hits against three different Baltimore hurlers, including a grand slam in the ninth inning off Keegan Akin. It was the first homer of the year for the 28-year-old infielder, and through his first 13 games with the Red Sox, Monasterio is slashing .243/.317/.432 with one steal, five runs and seven RBI.
Garrett Crochet
Garrett Crochet Locks back in Saturday
Sat, Apr 25, 2026, 4:58 PM
Crochet (3-3) picked up the win in Saturday's 17-1 rout of the Orioles, allowing three hits and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out seven.
Analysis: After a pair of shockingly poor starts in which he coughed up 16 runs (15 earned) in only 6.2 innings, Crochet bounced back and was back in Cy Young-caliber form. The southpaw tossed 57 of 90 pitches for strikes as he produced his third quality start of the season, and fanned at least seven batters for the fifth time in six trips to the mound. He'll take a 6.30 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 37:11 K:BB through 30 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Astros.
Brayan Bello
Brayan Bello Disastrous outing in Baltimore
Sat, Apr 25, 2026, 8:56 AM
Bello (1-3) took the loss Friday, surrendering eight runs on 13 hits -- including five home runs -- and a walk over 3.1 innings as the Red Sox were routed 10-3 by the Orioles. He struck out two.
Analysis: The 13 hits and five long balls allowed were unsurprisingly career worsts for Bello, and the right-hander had already tied his previous career-worst mark by serving up three long balls before he'd even escaped the first inning. Bello has failed to complete five innings in four of his first five starts this season, stumbling to a 9.00 ERA, 2.27 WHIP and 15:13 K:BB through 22 innings, and it might only be injuries to other pitchers keeping him in the rotation at this point. Bello will try to right the ship in his next outing, which is set to come on the road next week in Toronto.
Carlos Narvaez
Carlos Narvaez Idle Saturday
Sat, Apr 25, 2026, 8:47 AM
Narvaez isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against Baltimore.
Analysis: Narvaez has tallied a base hit in each of his last five games, but the Sox will give him a breather Saturday and start Connor Wong at catcher instead.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Sitting fourth straight
Sat, Apr 25, 2026, 8:44 AM
Anthony (back) isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Orioles.
Analysis: The Red Sox had been hopeful that Anthony would return to action Friday, but his absence is now set to reach four consecutive games. Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu will start across the outfield while Andruw Monasterio starts as Boston's designated hitter.
Wilyer Abreu
Wilyer Abreu Encouraging effort in loss
Sat, Apr 25, 2026, 8:31 AM
Abreu went 2-for-4 with a double, a solo home run and an additional run scored in Friday's 10-3 loss to the Orioles.
Analysis: Abreu, who snapped an 18-game drought without a home run and a 15-game stretch without an extra-base hit, was the lone bright spot in another Red Sox loss, their fourth straight defeat. After a strong start over the first 13 games, Abreu has hit the skids and entered Friday's contest on a 6-for-40 (.150) stretch over the subsequent 11 contests.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Absence continuing Friday
Fri, Apr 24, 2026, 2:22 PM
Anthony (back) is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Orioles, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
Analysis: The 21-year-old outfielder will sit for a third straight game Friday due to upper-back tightness, which first surfaced on a swing during Tuesday's loss to the Yankees. According to Ian Browne of MLB.com, Anthony is showing improvement and could see the field at some point this weekend in Baltimore.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Hopeful to play Friday
Thu, Apr 23, 2026, 8:38 PM
Anthony (back) is hopeful that he'll be able to play Friday against the Orioles, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: Anthony forced to miss Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Yankees with a back injury, marking his second straight absence. The outfielder spoke with the media following the defeat, outlining that he felt tightness in his upper back after hitting a line drive in Tuesday's 4-0 loss to New York, but he's now feeling much better. Anthony explained that he is hoping to make his return to action Friday, but he'll have to see how he feels in the morning before the game.
Patrick Sandoval
Patrick Sandoval Pulled off rehab assignment
Thu, Apr 23, 2026, 5:33 PM
The Red Sox returned Sandoval (biceps) from his rehab assignment Thursday, Chris Henrique of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.
Analysis: Sandoval had been pitching in the minors while working his way back from an internal brace procedure he underwent in 2024, but he suffered a setback during his latest rehab outing at Worcester. Manager Alex Cora said Monday that Sandoval will likely need just a few days of rest before he's ready to begin throwing again, at which point an updated timeline for his return could emerge.
Sonny Gray
Sonny Gray Likely to play catch Friday
Thu, Apr 23, 2026, 2:36 PM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that the MRI on Gray's right hamstring did not reveal anything worse than expected, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: Gray is nursing a strain, but Cora's words Thursday suggest the strain is the Grade 1 variety. The skipper added that Gray will likely play catch Friday as he slowly ramps things back up. Gray is eligible for activation from the 15-day injured list May 6, and he has a chance to be ready on that date or shortly after.
Eduardo Rivera
Eduardo Rivera Optioned back to minors
Thu, Apr 23, 2026, 12:55 PM
The Red Sox optioned Rivera to Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Rivera made his major-league debut out of the bullpen Wednesday versus the Yankees and was impressive, fanning three over 3.1 shutout innings while yielding just one hit. Despite the good first impression, the plan was always to send Rivera back to the minors so that he can stay stretched out as a starting pitcher. The lefty could get another look later this season when a need arises.
