Tyler Uberstine
Tyler Uberstine Takes L in MLB debut
Mon, Apr 6, 2026, 8:46 AM
Uberstine (0-1) was credited with Sunday's loss, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out two over 2.2 innings in an 8-6 loss to the Padres.
Analysis: Uberstine made his MLB debut and pitched two scoreless innings before Jackson Merrill drove a middle-middle fastball over the fence to lead off the eighth. He also walked a batter and gave up a double later in the frame. Overall, the right-hander threw the ball well and filled up the zone (45 pitches, 34 strikes), but he left that one pitch up to Merrill. Uberstine, who was a starter in the minor leagues, is expected to provide length out of the bullpen while he's up in the majors.
Trevor Story
Trevor Story Chase percentage up
Mon, Apr 6, 2026, 8:33 AM
Story is tied for the MLB lead in swings outside the zone (43), and his 18 swing-and-misses are tied for fourth.
Analysis: Story, whose 51.2 chase percentage ranks third in the majors, has struck out 17 times in 42 at-bats (40.5 K%) and is batting .119 following a 1-for-5 effort with two punchouts in Sunday's loss to San Diego. "I think the swing is in a good place," Boston manager Alex Cora told Christopher Smith of MassLive.com. "And you watch video and yes, it's same timing mechanism, hands placement. The body looks the same. It's just, 'What are we swinging (at)?'" For comparison, Story chased at a 35.3 percent clip and posted a 26.9 strikeout percentage in 2025.
Patrick Sandoval
Patrick Sandoval Scheduled start rained out
Mon, Apr 6, 2026, 8:14 AM
Sandoval (elbow) did not make his scheduled rehab start for Double-A Portland on Sunday, because the game was postponed due to weather, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. The left-hander will now start Wednesday for Triple-A Worcester.
Analysis: Sandoval is returning from an internal brace procedure that he underwent in 2024 and prevented him from pitching in 2025. The Red Sox will eventually need to decide on a role for Sandoval. Connolly Early is currently the fifth member of the team's rotation, and it's possible that Sandoval works as a long reliever.
Ranger Suarez
Ranger Suarez Another short outing
Sun, Apr 5, 2026, 5:14 PM
Suarez (0-1) didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Padres, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out two.
Analysis: Suarez started the day well, holding San Diego scoreless through his first three innings. However, things began to unravel in the fourth, where the left-hander was tagged for three runs. Suarez would then give up a lead-off single in the fifth, eventually resulting in a fourth run, before departing. Suarez's Red Sox tenure has gotten off to a rocky start -- he's now given up eight runs on 13 hits across 8.1 innings in his first two starts. Suarez will look to turn things around in his next start, currently slated for next weekend in St. Louis.
Garrett Whitlock
Garrett Whitlock Expected back Monday
Sun, Apr 5, 2026, 11:44 AM
Boston is expecting Whitlock (paternity leave) to return to the team Monday, Chris Henrique of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.
Analysis: Whitlock has been away from the team since Friday while welcoming his second child into the world. The righty reliever should be back with Boston for the team's series opener at home versus Milwaukee. Whitlock has yet to give a up a run through three outings spanning three innings this season.
Masataka Yoshida
Masataka Yoshida Enters Sunday's lineup
Sun, Apr 5, 2026, 10:31 AM
Yoshida will start in left field and bat sixth in Sunday's game against San Diego, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Yoshida will be making his first appearance of the series and just his fourth through nine games to begin the year. Roman Anthony moves from left field to DH, while Jarren Duran replaces the idle Ceddanne Rafaela in center field. Yoshida is 0-for-9 with six walks in 2026.
Johan Oviedo
Johan Oviedo Getting second opinion
Sun, Apr 5, 2026, 10:14 AM
Oviedo will seek a second opinion on his elbow this week after an initial MRI was inconclusive, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Ovideo was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday after he displayed diminished velocity during a relief appearance last Monday, when he allowed four runs, six hits, two home runs and a walk over 3.2 innings. The right-hander will meet with Dr. Keith Meister on Tuesday, who performed Tommy John surgery on Oviedo in late 2023.
Trevor Story
Trevor Story Struggles continue
Sun, Apr 5, 2026, 10:04 AM
Story went 0-for-4 in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Padres.
Analysis: Much like 2025, Story is off to a poor start. His hitless streak reached 16 at-bats Saturday, with two of those plate appearances coming with runners in scoring position. The shortstop is 1-for-11 in such situations and batting .108 (4-for-37) with just two RBI through eight contests.
Ceddanne Rafaela
Ceddanne Rafaela Taking seat Sunday
Sun, Apr 5, 2026, 8:49 AM
Rafaela is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres, Chris Henrique of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.
Analysis: Rafaela started the previous five games and posted a .779 OPS with a homer, an additional RBI and an additional run scored, but he'll receive the day off Sunday. Jarren Duran will shift to center field and Roman Anthony to designated hitter, allowing Masataka Yoshida to pick up a start in left.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Triples in loss to San Diego
Sat, Apr 4, 2026, 6:56 PM
Anthony went 2-for-4 with a triple in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Padres.
Analysis: After being stuck in a 1-for-17 slump earlier this week, Anthony is 4-for-9 with a solo home run, triple and one run scored over his last three appearances. Boston's offense as a whole continues to struggle, as the Red Sox have scored two runs or fewer in four of their last six games. Through eight games, Anthony is slashing .267/.333/.433 across 33 plate appearances.
Aroldis Chapman
Aroldis Chapman Takes loss against San Diego
Sat, Apr 4, 2026, 6:50 PM
Chapman (0-1) took the loss Saturday against the Padres, allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout across one inning.
Analysis: With the game tied 2-2 headed into the ninth inning, manager Alex Cora brought on Chapman, but the closer allowed a double to Fernando Tatis followed by an RBI single from Ramon Laureano to give San Diego the 3-2 lead. Chapman now owns a 2.25 ERA and 3:1 K:BB across four innings this season. He's 2-for-2 on save chances.
Connelly Early
Connelly Early Goes four innings Saturday
Sat, Apr 4, 2026, 6:45 PM
Early did not factor into the decision Saturday against the Padres, allowing two runs on three hits and four walks with four strikeouts across four innings.
Analysis: Early labored through four innings, needing 88 pitches to do so, and struggled with his command. San Diego's sputtering offense was unable to do much with the baserunners, pushing across just two runs against Early. Through two starts, Early owns a 2.89 ERA and 10:6 K:BB across 9.1 innings. Early's next start will likely come next weekend in St. Louis.
Triston Casas
Triston Casas Nearing swinging progression
Sat, Apr 4, 2026, 12:27 PM
Manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Casas (knee) will begin a swinging progression Monday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Cora added that Casas' intercostal strain isn't as significant as the team initially believed, so it shouldn't have too much of an impact on his return timeline while he recovers from patellar tendon surgery. The Red Sox haven't moved him to the 60-day injured list yet, so the door remains open for Casas to return sometime before late May.
Jedixson Paez
Jedixson Paez Returned to Red Sox
Sat, Apr 4, 2026, 10:47 AM
Paez cleared waivers Saturday and was returned to the Red Sox, Chris Henrique of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.
Analysis: The White Sox selected Paez during the Rule 5 Draft, but he was DFA'd by the club after giving up six earned runs on four hits and three walks in just three innings. The 22-year-old had never pitched an inning above the High-A level before debuting for Chicago, so the Red Sox may send him back down to High-A or Double-A now that he's back in the organization.
Justin Slaten
Justin Slaten Works clean eighth inning
Sat, Apr 4, 2026, 9:50 AM
Slaten struck out one over a perfect inning to earn a hold in Friday's 5-2 win over San Diego.
Analysis: Slaten pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning to earn his second hold in three appearances this season, both of which set up saves for closer Aroldis Chapman. Coming off a 2025 season affected by a shoulder injury, a healthy Slaten will be a vital piece of the bullpen's setup crew in 2026.
Caleb Durbin
Caleb Durbin Breaks drought
Sat, Apr 4, 2026, 9:38 AM
Durbin went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Friday's 5-2 win over the Padres.
Analysis: Durbin, who was 0-for-18 on the road to start his stay in a Red Sox uniform, heard a smattering of boos Friday when introduced prior to Boston's home-opener. The boos grew a little louder after he hit into an inning-ending double play in the second inning. Durbin then turned the boos into cheers in his next plate appearance when he drove in the Red Sox's second run with a two-out RBI single. Despite the shaky start, Durbin will continue to be the primary starter at third base with the opportunity to build off his contribution to Friday's win.
Willson Contreras
Willson Contreras Hits first homer with new club
Fri, Apr 3, 2026, 4:54 PM
Contreras went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Friday's 5-2 win over the Padres.
Analysis: Contreras hit what proved to be the game-winning home run off Michael King in the sixth inning. The veteran has gone just 4-for-23 to start the year but appears to be finding his groove, hitting safely in each of the past three games. He's tallied 20-plus homers in six of his 10 major-league seasons, including four of the past five, and is coming off a 2025 campaign in which he posted a career-best 80 RBI.
Marcelo Mayer
Marcelo Mayer Sparks offense in win
Fri, Apr 3, 2026, 4:18 PM
Mayer went 2-for-2 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and two RBI in Friday's 5-2 win over the Padres.
Analysis: Mayer doubled and scored in the third inning before adding a two-run homer in the sixth. The long ball was particularly impressive, coming in his first at-bat against a lefty this season after he went just 4-for-26 against southpaws in 2025. The 23-year-old is off to an encouraging start, going 5-for-17 with four extra-base hits and five runs scored through seven games. Entering last season as one of the game's top prospects, he still offers upside as a potential post-hype sleeper in 2026.
Aroldis Chapman
Aroldis Chapman Secures second save
Fri, Apr 3, 2026, 3:56 PM
Chapman earned the save in Friday's 5-2 win over the Padres, allowing no hits and one walk with one strikeout in a scoreless ninth inning.
Analysis: Chapman was called on to protect a three-run lead and slammed the door despite throwing just 11 of 21 pitches for strikes. The veteran has picked up where he left off after a superb 2025 campaign, tossing three scoreless frames and converting both of his save opportunities to start the season.
Sonny Gray
Sonny Gray Logs quality start in win
Fri, Apr 3, 2026, 3:50 PM
Gray (1-0) earned the win against the Padres on Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks with three strikeouts over six innings.
Analysis: Gray allowed two runs in the fifth inning but held the Padres scoreless otherwise en route to his first quality start in a Red Sox uniform. While the veteran generated just eight whiffs on 87 pitches, it was a solid rebound after he lasted only four frames in his season debut Saturday. He's posted an 8:1 K:BB through 10 innings to open the 2026 campaign and lines up for a home matchup against the Brewers next week.
