Masataka Yoshida
Masataka Yoshida Receives uptick in playing time
Thu, May 7, 2026, 10:20 PM
Yoshida started at designated hitter and went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Tampa Bay.
Analysis: Yoshida is getting an opportunity with Roman Anthony (wrist) landing on the 10-day injured list Thursday. Without Anthony, the lefty-batting Yoshida has started two consecutive games and should continue to get work whenever the Red Sox face a right-hander.
Wilyer Abreu
Wilyer Abreu Notches third steal
Thu, May 7, 2026, 10:16 PM
Abreu went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and one RBI in Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Rays.
Analysis: Abreu has gone 7-for-26 (.269) over the first seven games of May, and he's added a 6:9 BB:K and four RBI. The outfielder also has two steals over his last three contests, though he's up to just three thefts on four attempts, as running isn't a large part of his game. The outfielder is batting .300 with an .841 OPS, five home runs, 17 RBI, 19 runs scored, six doubles and one triple across 37 contests and has often been the Red Sox's most reliable hitter.
Trevor Story
Trevor Story Picks up steal in loss
Thu, May 7, 2026, 10:13 PM
Story went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Rays.
Analysis: Story has gone 11-for-45 (.244) over his last 11 games, but he's also racked up 14 strikeouts with just one extra-base hit and two steals in that span. The shortstop has struggled significantly so far, batting .204 with a .528 OPS, four steals, two home runs, 18 RBI, 14 runs scored and six doubles over 36 contests. The Red Sox haven't done well as a team, and Story's large contract gives him a bit more leeway to stay in the lineup, especially since other options at shortstop like Andruw Monasterio and Isiah Kiner-Falefa aren't hitting any better.
Jack Anderson
Jack Anderson Set to return to big leagues
Thu, May 7, 2026, 10:11 PM
Anderson is expected to be called up from Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Ari Alexander of 7 News Boston reports.
Analysis: Anderson will join the major-league roster for the second time this season, having produced a 3.38 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with six strikeouts over eight innings in three appearances with Boston earlier this season. The right-hander pitched multiple innings in all three of his previous outings with the Red Sox, reaching 52 pitches thrown in his longest appearance April 14 versus the Twins.
Jake Bennett
Jake Bennett Returns to Triple-A after start
Thu, May 7, 2026, 10:05 PM
Bennett was optioned to Triple-A Worcester after Thursday's 8-4 loss to Tampa Bay, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Bennett made his second career major-league start at home versus the Rays, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one batter over 5.1 innings. The southpaw has combined to pitch 10.1 innings while surrendering four runs in two outings with Boston, and he'll likely get another shot with the major-league roster down the road this season.
Mickey Gasper
Mickey Gasper Recalled from Triple-A
Thu, May 7, 2026, 5:12 PM
The Red Sox recalled Gasper from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: With Roman Anthony (wrist) headed for the IL, Gasper will come up from the minors to add depth to Boston's bench. The 30-year-old backstop owns a .445 OPS through 133 career plate appearances in the big leagues but has performed much better at Worcester, where he's slashed .295/.426/.524 over 27 games.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Officially placed on IL
Thu, May 7, 2026, 5:09 PM
The Red Sox placed Anthony (wrist) on the 10-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to Tuesday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: The Red Sox were holding out hope that Anthony would be able to avoid a trip to the IL after he sprained his wrist during Monday's game, but the team didn't like the idea of playing with a short bench for another few days. The 21-year-old will be eligible to return to the lineup May 15. Until then, Masataka Yoshida figures to continue benefitting from additional starts at DH.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Heading to injured list
Thu, May 7, 2026, 3:33 PM
Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said Thursday that Anthony (wrist) will be placed on the 10-day injured list, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Anthony hasn't played since suffering a sprained right wrist in Monday's game versus the Tigers. The injury hasn't gotten worse, but Anthony wasn't going to be able to play for at least a few more days, and the Red Sox didn't want to continue playing a man short. He will have a chance to be activated when first eligible late next week, though that possibility should become clearer over the next few days. Masataka Yoshida will continue to get increased reps at designated hitter while Anthony is shelved.
Johan Oviedo
Johan Oviedo Reevaluated in two weeks
Thu, May 7, 2026, 3:26 PM
Oviedo (elbow) will be reevaluated by Dr. Keith Meister in two weeks to determine his progress, Marcos Grunfeld of ElEmergente.com reports.
Analysis: Oviedo has been shut down over the past month after being diagnosed with a right flexor strain in early April. The Red Sox will determine the next steps for Oviedo's rehab based on what comes out of the upcoming exam with Dr. Meister.
Carlos Narvaez
Carlos Narvaez Getting day off
Thu, May 7, 2026, 1:43 PM
Narvaez is absent from the lineup for Thursday's contest against the Rays.
Analysis: It's a routine day of rest for Narvaez, who started three of the previous four tilts. Connor Wong will do the catching and bat eighth for the Red Sox in Thursday's series opener.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Missing third straight start
Thu, May 7, 2026, 1:42 PM
Anthony (wrist) remains out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rays.
Analysis: Anthony will miss a third straight start as he continues to recover from a sprained right wrist. The Red Sox have been optimistic that Anthony can avoid the injured list, but the more this drags out, the likelier an IL stint becomes. Masataka Yoshida is grabbing another start at designated hitter Thursday.
Sonny Gray
Sonny Gray Five shutout innings in return
Wed, May 6, 2026, 9:59 PM
Gray (3-1) earned the win Wednesday against the Tigers, allowing no runs on four hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out two.
Analysis: After missing about two weeks with a right hamstring strain, Gray worked with a pitch count but showed no signs of rust in his return to the mound. The veteran right-hander tossed 70 pitches in his second scoreless start of 2026, but he still hasn't been able to exceed five strikeouts in any of his six starts. Gray has a 3.54 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 15:7 K:BB over 28 innings, and he'll look to increase his workload in his next scheduled start versus Philadelphia.
Jake Bennett
Jake Bennett Another start awaits Thursday
Wed, May 6, 2026, 4:45 PM
Bennett is slated to start Thursday's game against the Rays at Fenway Park, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: The Red Sox welcomed Sonny Gray (hamstring) from the injured list Wednesday, but Bennett will wind up sticking around in the big-league rotation for another turn while the status of Ranger Suarez (hamstring) remains in the flux. Boston is still leaving the door open for Suarez to start either of the final two games of the series versus the Rays, and if that comes to pass, Bennett could be headed back to Triple-A Worcester following Thursday's outing. The 25-year-old lefty turned in a strong performance in his MLB debut last Friday, striking out three while limiting the Astros to one run on five hits and two walks over five innings en route to picking up a win.
Undergoes Tommy John surgery
Wed, May 6, 2026, 3:56 PM
Valera underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Tuesday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Valera injured his elbow in mid-April while pitching for High-A Greenville, and after an MRI and several consultations, he opted for surgery. The operation will likely knock the 19-year-old out until the second half of the 2027 season. Valera held a 1.93 ERA and 17:4 K:BB over 9.1 frames with Greenville before getting hurt.
Alec Gamboa
Alec Gamboa Heading back to Triple-A
Wed, May 6, 2026, 2:39 PM
The Red Sox optioned Gamboa to Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday.
Analysis: After being called up from Worcester on Monday, Gamboa will head back to the minors just two days later with Boston needing to clear a spot on the roster for right-hander Sonny Gray (hamstring), who was activated ahead of his start Wednesday in Detroit. Gamboa made his MLB debut in Tuesday's 10-3 win over the Tigers, striking out two batters over an inning of relief. The 29-year-old left-hander will likely move back into a starting role at Worcester.
Sonny Gray
Sonny Gray Activated ahead of start
Wed, May 6, 2026, 2:37 PM
The Red Sox reinstated Gray (hamstring) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday in Detroit.
Analysis: Left-hander Alec Gamboa was optioned to Triple-A Worcester to make room on the 26-man active roster for Gray, who ended up missing the minimum 15 days after being shelved April 21 due to a right hamstring strain. He was never shut down from throwing during his time on the IL and didn't require a rehab assignment prior to being activated. Gray should be ready to handle a normal workload as he takes the hill for Boston for the sixth time this season, after going 2-1 with a 4.30 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB in 23 innings over his first five starts.
Wilyer Abreu
Wilyer Abreu Strong showing in Detroit
Wed, May 6, 2026, 8:28 AM
Abreu went 3-for-4 with a walk, a solo home run, a second run scored and a stolen base in Tuesday's 10-3 win over the Tigers.
Analysis: The 26-year-old outfielder led the Red Sox in times on base while going back-to-back with Willson Contreras to lead off the fourth inning against Framber Valdez, a power display that prompted the frustrated southpaw to hit Trevor Story with a 94.4 mph fastball on his next pitch and sparked the benches to clear. Abreu has been a bright spot for Boston over the last couple weeks, slashing .362/.483/.532 over the last 13 games with two doubles, two homers, two steals, five RBI and seven runs.
Brayan Bello
Brayan Bello Sharp as primary pitcher Tuesday
Wed, May 6, 2026, 8:22 AM
Bello (2-4) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over seven relief innings in a 10-3 rout of the Tigers. He struck out seven.
Analysis: Working as a bulk reliever for the first time in 2026, the right-hander entered the game to begin the second inning after Jovani Moran had given up two runs as the opener. Bello responded with his best performance of the year, setting new season highs in innings and strikeouts while firing 66 of 94 pitches for strikes. It was a timely bounce-back effort, as Bello's rotation spot appears to be hanging by a thread with Sonny Gray (hamstring) due back Wednesday and Payton Tolle pitching well. Even after Tuesday's strong outing, Bello carries a 7.44 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 24:16 K:BB through 32.2 innings. He'll need to string together another couple good starts to keep his job, beginning with a trip to the mound at home this weekend against the Rays.
Ceddanne Rafaela
Ceddanne Rafaela Homers in win
Wed, May 6, 2026, 8:19 AM
Rafaela went 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and an additional run scored in Tuesday's 10-3 win over the Tigers.
Analysis: Rafaela launched his second home run of the season, a three-run shot in first inning to put Boston up early. The multi-hit effort was his fourth in the last nine games, a span in which Rafaela is slashing .342/.375/.553 with four extra-base hits, six RBI, one steal and five runs scored.
Sonny Gray
Sonny Gray Expected back Wednesday
Tue, May 5, 2026, 5:08 PM
Manager Chad Tracy said Tuesday that "all things are pointing toward" Gray (hamstring) being reinstated off the injured list to start Wednesday's game against the Tigers, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: The veteran right-hander threw a bullpen session Monday in Detroit that apparently went well, setting himself up to come off the IL for Wednesday's series finale. Gray landed on the shelf April 21 due to the hamstring strain, and he shouldn't face significant workload limitations in his return to the big-league mound given the brevity of the absence.
