Caleb Durbin
Caleb Durbin Makes impact off bench
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 10:46 AM
Durbin entered Tuesday's game as a pinch hitter and went 0-for-1 with an RBI in a 3-2 win over Milwaukee. He remained in the game at third base.
Analysis: Durbin pinch hit for Marcelo Mayer in a tie game with runners in scoring position against a left-hander in the sixth inning and plated the eventual game-winning run on a slow roller to second base. Following an 0-for-18 start to the season, Durbin has found moderate success since, going 4-for-15 with a walk, a double and two RBI over the last five games.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Early throwing issues
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 10:35 AM
Anthony had three instances of poor throws from left field early in the regular season that has been a topic of discussion, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Anthony had two throws to home plate during the team's season-opening road trip which were not close, including one that arrived on multiple bounces. He followed up with an offline throw to third base Monday that led to two runs in an 8-6 loss. Both manager Alex Cora and third base coach Kyle Hudson, who was an outfielder during his tenure as a player in the majors and minors, believe the issue revolves around Anthony's lower-half mechanics. Hudson indicated the arm strength is there, but improper mechanics puts him in a tough position to maximize the strength. Anthony served as the DH on Tuesday, and his throwing issues aren't going to cost him plate appearances; however, as Cora manages playing time for five worthy outfielders, limiting Anthony to DH reduces roster flexibility. It's unclear when he'll return to the outfield, but when he does, teams are expected to challenge Anthony's arm.
Johan Oviedo
Johan Oviedo Shut down with flexor strain
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 10:28 AM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Oviedo will be shut down for six week after being diagnosed with a right flexor strain, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Cora is optimistic Oviedo can avoid surgery, but the Red Sox will have to wait and see if the injury heals with extended rest. Oviedo will need plenty of time to get ramped back up after the six-week shutdown period, so he'll be in line for an extended absence, even if all goes well during the recovery process. The righty is already on the 15-day injured list and is a candidate to shift to the 60-day IL if/when Boston needs to free up a spot on its 40-man roster.
Zack Kelly
Zack Kelly Succeeds in high-leverage spot
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 10:01 AM
Kelly retired both batters faced in the seventh inning to earn a hold in Tuesday's 3-2 win over Milwaukee.
Analysis: Kelly entered a high-leverage situation that might normally be entrusted to Justin Slaten, but he was unavailable due to an oblique injury. With Boston leading, 3-1, the bases loaded and one out, Kelly limited the damage to one run on a pair of groundouts and recorded his first hold. In three appearances since being called up from Triple-A Worcester last week, the right-handed reliever has allowed one run and one hit while striking out one over 2.2 innings. The 31-year-old Kelly is a well-known commodity in the bullpen, having made 98 appearances for the Red Sox over the previous four seasons.
Justin Slaten
Justin Slaten Shelved with oblique strain
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 9:18 AM
The Red Sox placed Slaten on the 15-day injured list Wednesday due to a right oblique strain.
Analysis: Boston had previously noted that Slaten wasn't available out of the bullpen for Tuesday's 3-2 win over Milwaukee due to a sore oblique, but the righty reliever will now be shut down for at least two weeks after being diagnosed with a strain. The Red Sox recalled lefty Tyler Samaniego from Triple-A Worcester to take Slaten's spot in the bullpen. For his part, Slaten believes his injury is minor and is hopeful to return from the IL when first eligible April 20, per Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic.
Jarren Duran
Jarren Duran Idle against southpaw
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 9:13 AM
Duran is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers.
Analysis: Duran will sit for the third time this season but for the first time against a lefty (Shane Drohan), after he had previously been included in the lineup in the Red Sox's lone other matchup versus a southpaw (Cincinnati's Andrew Abbott) back on Opening Day. With Duran on the bench, the Red Sox will use Roman Anthony in left field, while Trevor Story gets a day off from playing shortstop but stays in the lineup at designated hitter.
Marcelo Mayer
Marcelo Mayer Taking seat against southpaw
Wed, Apr 8, 2026, 9:04 AM
Mayer is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: With southpaw Shane Drohan on the hill for Milwaukee, Mayer and fellow left-handed hitters Jarren Duran and Masataka Yoshida will be held out of the starting nine. Isiah Kiner-Falefa will replace Mayer at second base and will bat ninth.
Justin Slaten
Justin Slaten Dealing with sore oblique
Tue, Apr 7, 2026, 8:44 PM
Slaten was unavailable for Tuesday's game against the Brewers due to oblique soreness, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: The team has labeled Slaten as day-to-day, so his injury doesn't seem to be too severe. The 28-year-old is off to a strong start this season after striking out five batters over 3.1 shutout innings, picking up holds in two of his four appearances.
Triston Casas
Triston Casas Undergoing imaging after setback
Tue, Apr 7, 2026, 3:22 PM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Casas (knee) is headed for imaging on his ribs after he tried to swing a bat Monday and "it didn't go well," Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: Casas -- who initially went on the injured list as he recovers from last May's knee surgery -- was recently diagnosed with a left intercostal strain. More will be known about a possible timetable for Casas after his imaging results are in, but he won't be back anytime soon even if he gets a favorable result.
Kutter Crawford
Kutter Crawford Closing in on rehab assignment
Tue, Apr 7, 2026, 2:28 PM
Crawford (wrist) is on track to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester this weekend, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Crawford is set to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, and as long as he gets through that without any setbacks, he'll be cleared to take the ball for the WooSox. It would be the first time Crawford has pitched in a game since he underwent right wrist surgery last summer. The righty will need a few rehab outings, and he could remain with Worcester rather than rejoin the Red Sox after the rehab assignment is over.
Carlos Narvaez
Carlos Narvaez Taking seat Tuesday
Tue, Apr 7, 2026, 1:32 PM
Narvaez is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Brewers, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Narvaez went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in Monday's series opener but is batting .273 through 24 plate appearances this year, though he's still in search of his first extra-base hit. Connor Wong is starting behind the plate and batting eighth Tuesday.
Caleb Durbin
Caleb Durbin Getting breather Tuesday
Tue, Apr 7, 2026, 1:29 PM
Durbin is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game versus the Brewers.
Analysis: Durbin logged his first career two-hit game as a member of the Red Sox in Monday's loss to Milwaukee, but he'll get a breather a day later. Isiah Kiner-Falefa will cover third base and bat ninth for Boston.
Willson Contreras
Willson Contreras Eventful night in loss
Tue, Apr 7, 2026, 8:43 AM
Contreras went 3-for-3 with a walk, a double, a home run and two RBI in Monday's 8-6 loss to Milwaukee. He was also hit by a pitch.
Analysis: Contreras delivered his first multi-hit game and was involved in all four innings in which the Red Sox scored, but the event causing the most drama was the HBP. He was buzzed by a fastball that barely struck his hand in the third inning, but it fired up Contreras -- it was the 24th time he's been hit by a pitch by Brewers pitchers over the years, and he had a message. "They always say, 'I'm not trying to hit you.' That gets old," Contreras told Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. "So next time they hit me again, I'm going to take one of them out. That's the message." Contreras has turned around a slow start, going 7-for-21 over the last six contests, and he's reached base safely in nine of 10 games played (.409 OBP) to go along with three extra-base hits and four RBI.
Trevor Story
Trevor Story Moved down order
Tue, Apr 7, 2026, 8:19 AM
Story batted fifth and went 1-for-4 with two RBI in Monday's 8-6 loss to the Brewers.
Analysis: Red Sox manager Alex Cora dropped Story from second to fifth in the order, and the move paid dividends early, when Story singled in a run in the first inning. He later drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. While Story's offense (.130 average, .143 with RISP) has been a contributing factor to the team's malaise, it's far from the lone issue tormenting Boston which is an MLB-worst 2-8 due to a variety of reasons.
Brayan Bello
Brayan Bello Another poor outing Monday
Mon, Apr 6, 2026, 10:56 PM
Bello took a no-decision Monday against the Brewers, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks in 3.1 innings. He struck out five.
Analysis: After being torched by the Astros for five earned runs in his season debut, Bello struggled once again in his second start. Besides piling up 17 swinging strikes Monday, the right-hander labored while throwing 86 pitches (50 strikes) and had a hard time finding the plate versus a tough Milwaukee lineup. Bello has a bit of a softer matchup against St. Louis slated for this weekend, when he'll be trying to improve on his 7:7 K:BB through his first eight frames.
Tyler Uberstine
Tyler Uberstine Goes back to Triple-A
Mon, Apr 6, 2026, 1:49 PM
The Red Sox optioned Uberstine to Triple-A Worcester on Monday.
Analysis: Uberstine was unlikely to be available to pitch for another day or two after tossing 2.2 innings and 45 pitches in relief during Sunday's loss to the Padres, so the Red Sox will send him back to the minors to clear room on the active roster for right-hander Garrett Whitlock (personal), who was reinstated from the paternity list. Once he's back in Worcester, Uberstine will likely settle back into the rotation after making his MLB debut out of the bullpen.
Garrett Whitlock
Garrett Whitlock Returns from paternity list
Mon, Apr 6, 2026, 1:45 PM
The Red Sox reinstated Whitlock (personal) from the paternity leave list Monday.
Analysis: Boston sent out right-hander Tyler Uberstine to Triple-A Worcester to clear room on the active roster for Whitlock, who spent the maximum three days away from the Red Sox while observing the birth of his child. The 29-year-old right-hander should return to a high-leverage role in the Boston bullpen.
Jarren Duran
Jarren Duran Exiting lineup Monday
Mon, Apr 6, 2026, 1:04 PM
Duran is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Brewers, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: He'll take a seat for the second time in the Red Sox's first 10 games of the season as manager Alex Cora makes room in the lineup for Masataka Yoshida, who will serve as Boston's designated hitter in the series opener. Duran is one of multiple Boston hitters who has yet to get going at the dish amid the team's 2-7 start to the season; he's mustered a .200/.314/.267 slash line with zero home runs and two stolen bases over his 35 plate appearances.
Tyler Uberstine
Tyler Uberstine Dealt loss in MLB debut
Mon, Apr 6, 2026, 8:46 AM
Uberstine (0-1) was the pitcher of record in Sunday's 8-6 loss to the Padres after allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out two over 2.2 innings of relief.
Analysis: Uberstine made his MLB debut and pitched two scoreless innings before Jackson Merrill drove a fastball over the fence to lead off the eighth. The right-hander also walked a batter and gave up a double later in the frame. Overall, Uberstine threw the ball well and filled up the zone (45 pitches, 34 strikes), but the mistake pitch to Merrill proved to be costly. Uberstine, who had been used as a starter in the minor leagues, is expected to provide length out of the bullpen while he's up in the majors.
Trevor Story
Trevor Story Chase percentage up
Mon, Apr 6, 2026, 8:33 AM
Story is tied for the MLB lead in swings outside the zone (43), and his 18 swing-and-misses are tied for fourth.
Analysis: Story, whose 51.2 chase percentage ranks third in the majors, has struck out 17 times in 42 at-bats (40.5 K%) and is batting .119 following a 1-for-5 effort with two punchouts in Sunday's loss to San Diego. "I think the swing is in a good place," Boston manager Alex Cora told Christopher Smith of MassLive.com. "And you watch video and yes, it's same timing mechanism, hands placement. The body looks the same. It's just, 'What are we swinging (at)?'" For comparison, Story chased at a 35.3 percent clip and posted a 26.9 strikeout percentage in 2025.
