Trevor Story Early season struggles continue
Sat, Apr 18, 2026, 6:12 PM
Story went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts during the Red Sox's 4-1 loss to the Tigers on Saturday.
Analysis: Story served as the designated hitter for Saturday's bout, though that shift didn't pay off as he was struck out in all three of his at-bats against Tarik Skubal. Story has gone 0-for-9 with six strikeouts over the first two games of the series and is slashing .188/.202/.306 with one steal, two home runs, 17 RBI and a 30.6 percent strikeout rate over 89 plate appearances this season.
Brayan Bello
Brayan Bello Struggles out of gate
Sat, Apr 18, 2026, 6:09 PM
Bello (1-2) took the loss against the Tigers on Saturday, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four across four innings.
Analysis: It was going to be tough for Bello to come away with the win Saturday as he faced Tarik Skubal on the mound, but the former did himself no favors in the first inning. Bello ran up his pitch count to 35 in the opening frame, somehow limiting the damage to just one run despite loading the bases. He settled in over the next two innings before giving up another three runs in the fourth, and Bello was unable to avoid the loss as his teammates generated just one run. He has given up three runs or more in three of his first four starts of the season and has a 6.75 ERA and 1.93 WHIP over 18.2 innings. Bello will look to bounce back in his next start, which is tentatively slated for next week at home against the rival Yankees.
Justin Slaten
Justin Slaten Progresses to playing catch
Sat, Apr 18, 2026, 12:25 PM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters that Slaten (oblique) played catch Friday and Saturday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: Slaten landed on the 15-day injured list April 8 due to a right oblique strain. He's progressed enough in his recovery to start playing catch and will likely need some turns in a rehab assignment before being cleared to return to major-league action. Slaten appeared in four regular-season games prior to his IL stint, recording two holds while allowing one unearned run on two hits and two walks with five strikeouts over 3.1 innings.
Trevor Story
Trevor Story Working as DH
Sat, Apr 18, 2026, 10:46 AM
Story will start at DH and bat fourth against the Tigers on Saturday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: Story lost his four-game hitting streak with an 0-for-4 performance in Friday's series opener, but he'll remain in the lineup Saturday as the designated hitter against Tarik Skubal and the Tigers with Andruw Monasterio at shortstop.
Carlos Narvaez
Carlos Narvaez Sitting third straight
Sat, Apr 18, 2026, 10:42 AM
Narvaez isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Tigers, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: Narvaez will miss a third consecutive start Saturday after posting a .409 OPS through his first 12 games of the season. Connor Wong, on the other hand, owns a 1.006 OPS through eight games and may have finally surpassed Narvaez as Boston's primary starter at catcher.
Aroldis Chapman
Aroldis Chapman Works out of jam
Sat, Apr 18, 2026, 7:24 AM
Chapman allowed a walk and two hits over a scoreless ninth inning in Friday's 1-0 extra-inning win over Detroit.
Analysis: Chapman, pitching in a non-save situation, allowed base runners for the fifth consecutive outing. It may not be much of a concern at this point, but his 3.9 BB/9 this season is higher than his dominant 2025, when walked a career-low 2.2 batters per nine innings.
Connor Wong
Connor Wong Outperforming starter
Sat, Apr 18, 2026, 7:15 AM
Wong went 1-for-2 with a walk and a double in Friday's 1-0 extra-inning win over the Tigers.
Analysis: Wong recorded his fourth double of the season in the third inning but was stranded there. While the catching depth chart hasn't changed, it's hard to ignore Wong's production is better than that of starter Carlos Narvaez. Entering Saturday, Wong owns a 1.006 OPS, while Narvaez is at .409 and has struck out seven times over the last two games.
Ranger Suarez
Ranger Suarez Throws eight scoreless Friday
Fri, Apr 17, 2026, 9:38 PM
Suarez did not factor into the decision in Friday's 1-0 extra-inning win over the Tigers, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out four over eight scoreless innings.
Analysis: Suarez worked eight strong innings but was locked in a pitcher's duel with Casey Mize for most of the contest. Despite throwing just 55 of 93 pitches for strikes and generating only four whiffs, the 30-year-old has now tossed 14 straight scoreless frames without allowing an extra-base hit after yielding eight combined runs over his first two starts with the Red Sox. He'll carry a 3.22 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB across 22.1 innings into a home matchup against the Yankees next week.
Kutter Crawford
Kutter Crawford Will undergo further testing
Fri, Apr 17, 2026, 3:20 PM
Manager Alex Cora said Friday that Crawford (wrist/forearm) will likely require an MRI on his injured forearm, Chris Henrique of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.
Analysis: Cora initially said Crawford probably wouldn't require imaging, but Crawford is still feeling sore after he was pulled off his rehab assignment Wednesday. The right-hander missed the entirety of the 2025 season with a right wrist injury that required surgery.
Tyler Uberstine
Tyler Uberstine To 7-day IL with shoulder soreness
Fri, Apr 17, 2026, 2:15 PM
Uberstine was placed on the 7-day injured list with right shoulder soreness at Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Chris Henrique of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.
Analysis: Uberstine made his major-league debut earlier this month, appearing in one game for the Red Sox back on April 5 against the Padres. He allowed one run on three hits and one walk with two strikeouts across 2.2 innings. Uberstine was sent back to Worcester the following day.
Willson Contreras
Willson Contreras Back in lineup Friday
Fri, Apr 17, 2026, 1:25 PM
Contreras (back) is starting at first base and batting second Friday against the Tigers, Chris Henrique of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.
Analysis: Contreras' back tightened up on him Tuesday, and he was out of the lineup Wednesday against the Twins ahead of Thursday's off day. Contreras has been one of baseball's best hitters over the last couple weeks, as he's slashing .378/.500/.676 with three home runs, 10 RBI and eight runs scored over the last 15 days.
Trevor Story
Trevor Story Drives in five in Minnesota
Wed, Apr 15, 2026, 6:08 PM
Story went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, a home run and five RBI in Wednesday's 9-5 win over the Twins.
Analysis: The veteran shortstop capped a five-run third inning with a three-run shot off Simeon Woods Richardson before adding a two-run double in the sixth. The long ball was Story's first in April and second of the season, and while he had a sluggish start to the campaign he appears to have found his groove -- over the last nine games he's batting .314 (11-for-35) with a whopping 15 RBI.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa
Isiah Kiner-Falefa Logs two hits in win
Wed, Apr 15, 2026, 6:06 PM
Kiner-Falefa started at third base and went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Wednesday's 9-5 win over the Twins.
Analysis: Kiner-Falefa, who filled in for the resting Caleb Durbin, made a second consecutive start. His start Tuesday came at second base against a left-hander as part of a platoon role with Marcelo Mayer. Kiner-Falefa's playing time has been sporadic, which hurts his offense. He entered Wednesday's contest batting .133 (2-for-15).
Connelly Early
Connelly Early Sharp in first win of 2026
Wed, Apr 15, 2026, 6:03 PM
Early (1-0) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over six innings in a 9-5 victory over the Twins. He struck out five.
Analysis: The young southpaw delivered his first quality start of the season along with his first win, and the only blemish on his line was a first-inning solo shot by Austin Martin. Early tossed 52 of his 85 pitches for strikes, and he has yet to give up more than two runs in an outing in 2026. He'll take a 2.29 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 20:10 K:BB through 19.2 innings into his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come at home early next week against the Yankees.
Andruw Monasterio
Andruw Monasterio Slots in at first base
Wed, Apr 15, 2026, 5:55 PM
Monasterio started at first base and went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 9-5 win over Minnesota.
Analysis: Monasterio, who stepped in at first base Tuesday when Willson Contreras was removed due to a back issue, started there Wednesday. The three-hit day was the first multi-hit effort of the season for Monasterio, who entered the contest batting .143 (2-for-14) in limited playing time. The Red Sox are off Thursday, which gives Contreras downtime ahead of the four-game set with the Tigers begins Friday.
Carlos Narvaez
Carlos Narvaez Out of Boston's lineup
Wed, Apr 15, 2026, 9:55 AM
Narvaez is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest in Minnesota.
Analysis: Narvaez started at catcher in the first two games of the series, so he's earned a breather in Wednesday's finale. Connor Wong will be behind the dish and bat eighth for the Red Sox.
Caleb Durbin
Caleb Durbin Taking seat in series finale
Wed, Apr 15, 2026, 9:53 AM
Durbin is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins.
Analysis: Durbin will receive a routine day off after compiling a poor .389 OPS in his first 16 games this season. Isiah Kiner-Falefa will handle third base and bat ninth for the Red Sox.
Wilyer Abreu
Wilyer Abreu Getting first day off Wednesday
Wed, Apr 15, 2026, 9:51 AM
Abreu is out of the lineup for Wednesday's contest in Minnesota.
Analysis: Abreu will receive his first breather of the season in a planned day off. Roman Anthony will occupy right field, Jarren Duran will play left field, and Masataka Yoshida will serve as the designated hitter as the Red Sox try to avoid the sweep.
Willson Contreras
Willson Contreras Out of Wednesday's lineup
Wed, Apr 15, 2026, 9:48 AM
Contreras (back) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game in Minnesota.
Analysis: Contreras exited Tuesday's 6-0 loss after his lower back tightened up on him. With a team off day looming Thursday before the Red Sox begin a homestand Friday, it's sensible to rest Contreras for the series finale Wednesday. Andruw Monasterio will handle first base and bat sixth for Boston. Per Ian Browne of MLB.com, manager Alex Cora believes Contreras has a good chance to be ready to play Friday versus the Tigers.
Sonny Gray
Sonny Gray Knocked around during loss
Tue, Apr 14, 2026, 9:52 PM
Gray (2-1) took the loss Tuesday against the Twins, allowing five runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out one over four innings.
Analysis: Gray couldn't replicate the success from his previous outing, when he tossed 6.1 scoreless innings, as Minnesota consistently squared him up from the start. The right-hander allowed at least one hit in every inning he worked, beginning with the leadoff batter in the first inning who later came around to score. The trouble continued in the third when Byron Buxton took him deep, and the fourth inning unraveled with another homer followed by three straight singles that brought home an additional two runs. In his first season in Boston, Gray now owns a 4.43 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and an 11:4 K:BB across 20.1 innings and will look to limit the damage more efficiently in his next start, slated against Detroit.
