Aroldis Chapman
Aroldis Chapman Secures second save
Fri, Apr 3, 2026, 3:56 PM
Chapman earned the save in Friday's 5-2 win over the Padres, allowing no hits and one walk with one strikeout in a scoreless ninth inning.
Analysis: Chapman was called on to protect a three-run lead and slammed the door despite throwing just 11 of 21 pitches for strikes. The veteran has picked up where he left off after a superb 2025 campaign, tossing three scoreless frames and converting both of his save opportunities to start the season.
Sonny Gray
Sonny Gray Logs quality start in win
Fri, Apr 3, 2026, 3:50 PM
Gray (1-0) earned the win against the Padres on Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks with three strikeouts over six innings.
Analysis: Gray allowed two runs in the fifth inning but held the Padres scoreless otherwise en route to his first quality start in a Red Sox uniform. While the veteran generated just eight whiffs on 87 pitches, it was a solid rebound after he lasted only four frames in his season debut Saturday. He's posted an 8:1 K:BB through 10 innings to open the 2026 campaign and lines up for a home matchup against the Brewers next week.
Johan Oviedo
Johan Oviedo Lands on IL with elbow strain
Fri, Apr 3, 2026, 8:42 AM
The Red Sox placed Oviedo on the 15-day injured list Friday with a right elbow strain, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Oviedo's velocity in his first appearance out of the bullpen was down considerably, and the IL move offers an explanation. Manager Alex Cora said Friday that Oviedo has undergone X-rays and an MRI, and those results would be compared to previous imaging, per Ari Alexander of 7 News Boston.
Garrett Whitlock
Garrett Whitlock Goes on paternity leave
Fri, Apr 3, 2026, 8:25 AM
The Red Sox placed Whitlock on the paternity leave list Friday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Whitlock will be away for the next 1-to-3 days while welcoming a new addition to the family. The setup man has made three scoreless appearances out of the Boston bullpen in the early going this season, recording one hold with a 4:2 K:BB.
Zack Kelly
Zack Kelly Summoned from minors
Fri, Apr 3, 2026, 8:18 AM
The Red Sox recalled Kelly from Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Kelly was a late cut in spring training but gets an early opportunity with the big club. The right-hander put up a 4.58 ERA and 35:12 K:BB over 35.1 frames for the Red Sox last season. He'll operate in middle relief.
Caleb Durbin
Caleb Durbin Hitless in loss
Thu, Apr 2, 2026, 8:47 AM
Durbin went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Wednesday's 6-4 loss to Houston.
Analysis: Durbin is one of many Red Sox hitters to have stumbled out of the gate. Following a fifth consecutive hitless performance, Boston's primary third baseman is 0-for-18 with five strikeouts and one walk.
Wilyer Abreu
Wilyer Abreu Hot stick continues
Thu, Apr 2, 2026, 8:43 AM
Abreu went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the Astros.
Analysis: Abreu belted his third home run of the season in the eighth inning. While his teammates are struggling, Abreu has stood out as the team's best weapon at the plate. He's hit safely in five of six games, with multiple hits in four of them, and is 10-for-24 (.417) with three doubles, three home runs and six RBI.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Homers off the bench
Wed, Apr 1, 2026, 9:31 PM
Anthony went 1-for-1 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the Astros.
Analysis: After starting the game on the bench, Anthony came on as a pinch hitter in the top of the ninth and launched an opposite-field homer off a Bryan Abreu two-strike slider, his first long ball this season. While Boston's comeback bid would fall short, Anthony's homer is certainly a positive sign -- the outfielder had gone 0-for-12 with eight strikeouts in his previous three contests.
Garrett Crochet
Garrett Crochet Stumbles vs. Houston
Wed, Apr 1, 2026, 4:56 PM
Crochet (1-1) took the loss Wednesday against the Astros, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits across five innings. He struck out seven.
Analysis: It was a different story for Crochet on Wednesday, after the left-hander shut out the Reds in his first start of the season. After giving up two runs in the first inning, Crochet surrendered a two-run homer to Carlos Correa in the fifth in an eventual 6-4 Boston defeat. Crochet will look to get back on track in his next outing, tentatively lined up for next week at home against the Brewers.
Kutter Crawford
Kutter Crawford Nearing rehab start
Wed, Apr 1, 2026, 2:32 PM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Crawford (wrist) is expected to make his first minor-league rehab start in about two weeks, MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Per Christopher Smith of MassLive.com, Crawford threw four innings in a simulated game Monday at the Red Sox's spring training facility, but the right-hander looks like he'll continue to build up in Florida a little while longer before joining a minor-league affiliate. Meanwhile, fellow rehabbing pitcher Patrick Sandoval (elbow) is set to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday at Double-A Portland, and he would appear to be on track to beat Crawford back from the 15-day injured list. The Red Sox don't have room in the big-league rotation for either pitcher at the moment, so Crawford -- who has two minor-league options remaining -- could be assigned to Triple-A Worcester once he completes his rehab assignment and gets activated from the IL.
Marcelo Mayer
Marcelo Mayer Resting Wednesday
Wed, Apr 1, 2026, 12:41 PM
Mayer is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros.
Analysis: After a string of four straight starts, Mayer will get a breather Wednesday while the Red Sox conclude their series in Houston with a day game after a night game. Isiah Kiner-Falefa will fill in for Mayer at second base.
Carlos Narvaez
Carlos Narvaez Scratched from lineup, but not hurt
Wed, Apr 1, 2026, 12:39 PM
Narvaez was scratched from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros for non-injury reasons, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Connor Wong will start at catcher for the second day in a row and the third time in four games, but Narvaez doesn't appear to be dealing with any sort of health-related concern. Instead, manager Alex Cora hinted that Narvaez's absence might be a matter of discipline, as the skipper noted that he would keep the reason as to why Narvaez was scratched between himself and the catcher. After undergoing surgery in October to repair the meniscus in his left knee, Narvaez enjoyed a healthy spring training and had recorded four hits in nine at-bats through his first three games of the season.
Triston Casas
Triston Casas Shut down with intercostal strain
Wed, Apr 1, 2026, 11:29 AM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Casas (knee) will be will be shut down from hitting after sustaining a left intercostal strain, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Casas missed time during the 2024 season due to torn cartilage in his left rib cage, though this setback appears unrelated. He hasn't undergone an MRI and will be re-evaluated in a few days. The first baseman is on the 10-day injured list as he continues his recovery from patellar tendon surgery and faces an uncertain timetable. If the intercostal issue is deemed serious enough of a setback, Casas will be a candidate to shift to the 60-day IL.
Patrick Sandoval
Patrick Sandoval Poised for rehab assignment
Wed, Apr 1, 2026, 11:21 AM
Sandoval (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday at Double-A Portland on Sunday, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Sandoval was held out of the entirety of the spring training schedule as he continues to work his way back from June 2024 internal brace surgery. The Red Sox don't have an opening in the rotation for Sandoval at the moment, and the lefty can't be optioned to the minors once he's activated from the 15-day injured list, so the team could slow-play Sandoval on his rehab assignment until they decide how to deploy him.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Sitting after four-strikeout game
Wed, Apr 1, 2026, 10:21 AM
Anthony is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: With an off day looming Thursday, Red Sox manager Alex Cora will hold the struggling Anthony out of the lineup Wednesday to effectively give the young outfielder two full days to clear his head. After donning the Golden Sombrero in Tuesday's 9-2 loss to Houston, Anthony has now gone hitless with eight strikeouts in 12 at-bats over his last three starts.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Fans four times in loss
Wed, Apr 1, 2026, 6:32 AM
Anthony went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in Tuesday's 9-2 loss to Houston.
Analysis: After collecting three singles Opening Day, Anthony's bat has gone silent. Over four subsequent contests, he's gone 1-for-17 with a whopping 10 strikeouts. He's hardly the lone member of the team struggling, but Anthony carries a high profile as Boston's leadoff hitter who signed an eight-year contract extension in August of 2025. The top four spots in the Red Sox's order are batting a combined .156 through five games.
Connor Wong
Connor Wong Off to good start
Wed, Apr 1, 2026, 6:18 AM
Wong went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI in Tuesday's 9-2 loss to the Astros.
Analysis: Wong is off to a good start after hitting .190 over 188 at-bats in 2025. The backup catcher is 3-for-7 with two doubles through three games (two starts).
Ceddanne Rafaela
Ceddanne Rafaela Homers in loss
Wed, Apr 1, 2026, 6:13 AM
Rafaela went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 9-2 loss to Houston.
Analysis: Rafaela, batting ninth, launched his first home run of the season in the eighth inning. He's been a rare bright spot in a struggling offense, batting .250 (4-for-16) and ranking second among the team's qualified players. The Red Sox have lost four consecutive, and the offense has been non-existent in two straight lopsided losses to the Astros.
Brayan Bello
Brayan Bello Roughed up in first start of 2026
Tue, Mar 31, 2026, 10:47 PM
Bello (0-1) took the loss against the Astros on Tuesday, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out two across 4.2 innings.
Analysis: Bello pitched to a 5.65 ERA during spring training, and things didn't get any better in his first regular-season start. Yordan Alvarez took Bello deep in the fifth inning, and four of the next five Astros reached base to bounce Bello from the game. Bello turned in a career-best 3.35 ERA across 29 starts last regular season, but his 4.19 FIP suggested it was a bit of a fluke. Bello will need to pitch better to hold off other starting candidates Johan Oviedo, Kutter Crawford (wrist) and Patrick Sandoval (elbow) once everyone is healthy. Bello's next start is scheduled for Monday against the Brewers.
Carlos Narvaez
Carlos Narvaez Receiving Tuesday off
Tue, Mar 31, 2026, 3:55 PM
Narvaez is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game at Houston, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Narvaez went 1-for-3 with two strikeouts in Monday's series opener and has hits in all three of his starts this season, but he'll head to the bench for Tuesday's contest. Connor Wong will do the catching for Boston righty Brayan Bello.
