Caleb Durbin
Caleb Durbin Expected to play third base
Tue, Mar 10, 2026, 9:01 AM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora indicated Tuesday that Durbin will be the team's primary third baseman this season, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Durbin has played some second base this spring, as well, but signs had been pointing to him sticking at the hot corner where he played last season with the Brewers. He could wind up accruing enough time at second base to gain eligibility there in-season, but Durbin will enter the year eligible only at third base on most fantasy platforms. The Red Sox will likely go with either Marcelo Mayer or Isiah Kiner-Falefa at second base to open the season.
Garrett Crochet
Garrett Crochet Finds positives in third outing
Tue, Mar 10, 2026, 8:04 AM
Crochet allowed three runs on five hits while striking out two over 4.2 innings in Monday's spring start against the Phillies. He also hit a batter.
Analysis: Crochet's third Grapefruit League start didn't yield pretty results, but the left-hander was pleased overall with his execution, per Sean McAdam of MassLive.com. His velocity was down, but Crochet explained that was more a function of building arm strength and tinkering with mechanics. Philadelphia touched him for two runs in the second inning, which were aided by a couple of softly hit, well-placed singles. A third run was charged to him when a runner stole home after Crochet departed the game. Pitching into the fifth inning and hitting 59 pitches (42 strikes) leaves Crochet on schedule for Opening Day against the Reds on March 26.
Triston Casas
Triston Casas Won't play in spring training games
Mon, Mar 9, 2026, 11:33 AM
Casas (knee) conceded Monday that he won't play in any Grapefruit League games, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Casas had hoped to play in some spring training contests before the schedule concluded, but he will run out of time. He has yet to do any baserunning or sliding, and a clearer timetable for his game readiness won't be available until he checks off those boxes. Casas is working his way back from patellar tendon surgery on his left knee, which he underwent back on May 4.
Jake Bennett
Jake Bennett Bound for minor-league camp
Mon, Mar 9, 2026, 8:58 AM
The Red Sox optioned Bennett to minor-league camp Monday.
Analysis: Bennett had drawn positive buzz during his first spring training with the Red Sox after coming over in a trade with the Nationals over the winter, but the 25-year-old lefty never appeared likely to break camp with the big club. After Bennett turned in a 2.56 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 33:11 K:BB in 45.2 innings at Double-A Harrisburg upon being promoted following the All-Star break, the Red Sox could have him open the upcoming season in the Triple-A Worcester rotation.
Nick Sogard
Nick Sogard Back in action
Mon, Mar 9, 2026, 7:19 AM
Sogard (illness) is starting at first base and batting seventh Monday against the Phillies, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: He was scratched Friday with the illness but it was a minor issue. Sogard is competing for a bench spot on the Red Sox.
Marcelo Mayer
Marcelo Mayer Not guaranteed to make roster
Sun, Mar 8, 2026, 1:42 PM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Sunday that Mayer is "doing a good job" but wouldn't guarantee the young infielder will make the Opening Day roster, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: The 23-year-old is batting just .200 through four spring training games, though one of his two hits was a home run. Mayer struggled to a .228/.272/.402 slash line in 44 regular-season games as he received his first taste of the majors, and the offseason acquisitions of Caleb Durbin and Isiah Kiner-Falefa have resulted in a more crowded infield. If Mayer doesn't win a starting job, the Red Sox could prioritize getting him everyday opportunities in the minor leagues rather than keeping him in the majors as a bench option.
Johan Oviedo
Johan Oviedo Another strong outing
Sun, Mar 8, 2026, 12:49 PM
Oviedo allowed two hits and struck out four over 3.1 scoreless innings in Saturday's spring start against the Rays.
Analysis: After a wild, rocky start to the Grapefruit League, Oviedo has impressed in two subsequent outings and is the frontrunner for the final rotation spot. That first spring appearance, when the right-hander walked three and hit a batter, was followed by 6.1 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and zero walks.
Romy Gonzalez
Romy Gonzalez Could undergo surgery
Sat, Mar 7, 2026, 10:45 AM
Gonzalez will have his left shoulder injury evaluated Tuesday to determine whether he needs to undergo surgery, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
Analysis: Gonzalez has not participated in baseball activities in spring training due to left shoulder inflammation that he has dealt with for most of the offseason. He was already a long shot to be available for Opening Day, and it appears the 29-year-old utility man could be on the shelf well beyond the start of the 2026 regular season. An extended absence for Gonzalez increases Kristian Campbell, Nate Eaton and Andruw Monasterio's chances of cracking the Red Sox's Opening Day roster.
Wilyer Abreu
Wilyer Abreu With Team Venezuela
Sat, Mar 7, 2026, 8:55 AM
Abreu went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Team Venezuela in Friday's 6-2 win over the Netherlands at the World Baseball Classic.
Analysis: Prior to the WBC, Abreu appeared in six Grapefruit League games for Boston, going 2-for-14 with three walks. The Red Sox would like to see the lefty-hitting Abreu become an everyday right fielder, against both righties and lefties, but he had just three plate appearances against left-handers (0-for-3) during his time in Boston's camp. Abreu did have one at-bat against a lefty Friday and singled in a run during Venezuela's four-run fifth inning.
Kristian Campbell
Kristian Campbell Powers up Friday
Sat, Mar 7, 2026, 8:43 AM
Campbell started in center field and went 1-for-2 with a walk, a home run and two RBI in Friday's spring game against Detroit.
Analysis: Campbell put the Red Sox up early with a two-run shot in the first inning off Justin Verlander. It was the first homer of the Grapefruit League for Campbell, who has played exclusively in center field this spring. The 23-year-old is still figuring things out at the plate and in the outfield and doesn't have a clear path to playing time in Boston. As such, Campbell is expected to open the year at Triple-A Worcester, where plate appearances will be plentiful and the team can put the finishing touches on his transition from infield to outfield.
Connelly Early
Connelly Early Strong showing Friday
Sat, Mar 7, 2026, 8:20 AM
Early allowed two hits and walked one while striking out four over 3.2 scoreless innings in Friday's spring start against the Tigers.
Analysis: Early made his second Grapefruit League start and third appearance overall. The left-hander threw 51 pitches (31 strikes) and showcased a fastball that touched 96.2 mph and averaged 94.8, nearly one tick higher than it averaged in 2025. While nominally still in the competition for the final spot in the rotation, Early is expected to open the regular season at Triple-A Worcester. He's allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out eight over 8.1 spring innings.
Nick Sogard
Nick Sogard Scratched due to illnes
Fri, Mar 6, 2026, 10:29 AM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Sogard was scratched from Friday's Grapefruit League lineup against the Tigers due to illness, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: He should be ready to go in a day or two. Sogard is fighting to win a reserve role with the Red Sox.
Payton Tolle
Payton Tolle Dynamic relief outing
Thu, Mar 5, 2026, 5:42 PM
Tolle allowed one hit and one walk while striking out seven over three innings of relief in Tuesday's spring game against the Yankees.
Analysis: This was the best of three Grapefruit League outings for Tolle, who entered as a reliever and upped his pitch count reached 44 (28 strikes). It was his second straight relief outing, but he remains in the mix for a rotation spot along with Connelly Early and Johan Oviedo (the frontrunner). Red Sox manager Alex Cora was enthused by the performance and the results of Tolle's curveball, which along with his changeup, could make his fastball play better.
Vinny Nittoli
Vinny Nittoli Gets MRI on sore elbow
Wed, Mar 4, 2026, 8:19 AM
Nittoli underwent an MRI on his right elbow Tuesday after feeling pain during his most recent Grapefruit League appearance, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: The results of the imaging are not in yet. Nittoli is in Red Sox camp as a non-roster invitee and has been roughed up for four runs over 2.2 innings in his three spring training outings. Even if the MRI is clean, Nittoli will be ticketed for Triple-A Worcester.
Carlos Narvaez
Carlos Narvaez Back in action Wednesday
Wed, Mar 4, 2026, 7:07 AM
Narvaez (back) will start at catcher and bat sixth in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees, Chris Henrique of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.
Analysis: As expected, Narvaez will slot back in behind the plate after taking a day off to recover from a bout of back spasms. The Red Sox recently revealed that Narvaez played hurt for essentially the entire 2025 season before undergoing surgery in October to clean up his left knee. The 27-year-old is 5-for-10 with two RBI so far this spring.
Payton Tolle
Payton Tolle Likely bound for Triple-A
Tue, Mar 3, 2026, 3:38 PM
Tolle is expected to be optioned to Triple-A Worcester to begin the season if frontrunner Johan Oviedo wins the final spot in Boston's rotation, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Tolle is one of the organization's top prospects and made his MLB debut last year, but he's not likely to secure a place in the Opening Day rotation given how well the Red Sox improved their rotation during the offseason. The improved rotation depth serves an additional purpose for Boston, as it should allow the organization to secure an additional year of service time for Tolle, as long as he spends at least 46 days in the minors this season.
Connelly Early
Connelly Early Likely to open season at Triple-A
Tue, Mar 3, 2026, 3:06 PM
The Red Sox plan to option Early to Triple-A Worcester to begin the season if Johan Oviedo wins the final rotation spot, as expected, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Oviedo is the clear frontrunner to win the No. 5 spot in the rotation, and Boston has no plans to keep Early in the majors as a member of the bullpen. The left-hander received his first taste of the big leagues last year and pitched well across four regular-season starts with a 2.33 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 29:4 K:BB over 19.1 innings. Early is currently on the outside looking in for a rotation spot since the Red Sox significantly bolstered the unit this winter, but the organization can also get an extra year of service time if he spends 35 days in the minors this season. The top prospect is likely to begin the season in the rotation at Triple-A Worcester but will almost certainly be up with Boston at some point in 2026.
Brendan Rodgers
Brendan Rodgers Headed for second opinion
Tue, Mar 3, 2026, 2:08 PM
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that Rodgers' MRI and CT results were not encouraging, and the second baseman is seeking a second medical opinion with surgery expected to be necessary, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: Rodgers was sent for imaging after he tweaked his shoulder on a dive in the field last week, and it now appears he'll be unavailable to begin the season. The 29-year-old has previously undergone major surgery on both shoulders, but it's unclear if the current issue is related to those procedures. Rodgers wasn't likely to make Boston's Opening Day roster even if healthy, and he now appears set to begin the campaign on the IL at Triple-A Worcester.
Carlos Narvaez
Carlos Narvaez Scratched with back spasms
Tue, Mar 3, 2026, 12:43 PM
Narvaez was scratched from the lineup for Tuesday's exhibition game against Team Puerto Rico due to back spasms, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Narvaez experienced the back spasm Monday and is expected to return to action Wednesday after taking a day to recover. The 27-year-old is expected to open 2026 as Boston's No. 1 catcher after posting a .725 OPS with 15 home runs as a rookie in 118 regular-season games last year.
Carlos Narvaez
Carlos Narvaez Scratched Tuesday
Tue, Mar 3, 2026, 12:02 PM
Narvaez was scratched from the lineup for Tuesday's exhibition game versus Team Puerto Rico for unspecified reasons, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: It's unclear if Narvaez is dealing with an injury, but he's been removed from the starting nine after initially being penciled in as the designated hitter. The 27-year-old backstop underwent a left knee meniscectomy early in the offseason but entered camp fully healthy.
