Connor Wong
Connor Wong Homers in loss
Mon, Aug 17, 2026, 7:52 AM
Wong went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in Sunday's 8-3 loss to Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Wong supplied Boston's lone offense with a three-run homer in the fifth inning. It was his fourth of the season to go along with 22 RBI over 62 games. Wong's playing time took a hit when Adley Rutschman came off the injured list last week, but the latter is still finding himself at the plate. Rutschman, who served as the designated hitter Sunday, is 1-for-17 with nine strikeouts since being activated Aug. 11.
Aroldis Chapman
Aroldis Chapman Triggers vesting option
Mon, Aug 17, 2026, 7:44 AM
Chapman triggered a vesting option in his contract when he pitched a scoreless ninth inning in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Pirates.
Analysis: The appearance was a non-save situation for Chapman, but it took him beyond the 40-inning mark and triggered an option for 2027. Pending an end-of-year physical, the left-hander will be under contract with Boston for another season and make $13 million.
Trevor Story
Trevor Story Begins rehab assignment
Mon, Aug 17, 2026, 7:26 AM
Story (sports hernia) started at shortstop and went 1-for-2 with a run scored for Triple-A Worcester on Sunday.
Analysis: Story played four innings in the field and handled the lone chance that came his way. Following a day off Monday, Story will join the WooSox for a trip to Syracuse and start at shortstop Tuesday. The Red Sox haven't mapped out anything beyond that, and interim manager Chad Tracy confirmed Story won't play any position other than shortstop. Utility infielder Andruw Monasterio has held down shortstop nicely over the last month, but the Red Sox did not add an established shortstop at the trade deadline, suggesting Story, who played second base when he first signed with Boston, can reclaim the position he's play the most during his career.
Promoted to Double-A
Sun, Aug 16, 2026, 10:20 PM
Gonzales was promoted to Double-A Portland on Sunday, Ari Alexander of 7 News Boston reports.
Analysis: Gonzales will make the jump to the Double-A level after batting .271 with 17 home runs, 58 RBI, 68 runs scored and 11 stolen bases over 350 at-bats in 89 contests with High-A Greenville this season. The 19-year-old is an incredibly impressive batter for his age, and he is considered to be one of Boston's top overall prospects.
Brayan Bello
Brayan Bello Slated to have big role Monday
Sun, Aug 16, 2026, 7:59 PM
Bello is expected to pitch in bulk relief behind left-hander Alec Gamboa in Monday's game against the Diamondbacks at Fenway Park, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Gamboa has served as a swingman at Triple-A Worcester for a good chunk of the season and is capable of offering more length than the typical opener, but he might be capped at around one or two frames Monday since he'll be pitching on two days' rest after tossing three innings and 36 pitches in Friday's 8-4 loss to the Pirates. As a result, look for Bello -- who last pitched Aug. 9 -- to be called upon to provide length behind Gamboa. Bello has been hit hard over his eight starts this season, but he's been lights out in 10 relief appearances, pitching to an 0.75 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 42:6 K:BB across 48 innings. The 27-year-old righty could be a worthy streaming option Monday for fantasy managers looking to make up ground in the wins category.
Patrick Sandoval
Patrick Sandoval Stumbles vs. Pittsburgh
Sun, Aug 16, 2026, 7:28 PM
Sandoval (1-2) took the loss Sunday against the Pirates, allowing seven runs on nine hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out six.
Analysis: The Pirates got to Sandoval early Sunday, scoring twice in the first inning before putting up a five spot in the fifth. Coming into the day, Sandoval had held opponents to two runs or fewer in each of his previous four outings, posting a 2.61 ERA across 20.2 innings in that span. Sandoval's ERA now sits at 4.76 through seven starts (34 innings) this year with a 1.85 WHIP and 35:16 K:BB. The southpaw will look to bounce back his next time out, currently scheduled to come next weekend at home against the Giants.
Alec Gamboa
Alec Gamboa Set to operate as opener Monday
Sun, Aug 16, 2026, 6:48 PM
Gamboa will operate as Boston's opening pitcher Monday against the Diamondbacks, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: Gamboa will make the first start of his major-league career, albeit in a non-traditional capacity. The southpaw has produced an impressive 1.59 ERA and 1.12 WHIP with 12 strikeouts over 17 innings in nine appearances out of the bullpen. Since Gamboa most recently tossed three innings and 36 pitches in Friday's 8-4 loss to the Pirates, he'll likely be in store for a limited workload before turning the game over to right-hander Brayan Bello, who is expected to pitch in bulk relief.
Mickey Gasper
Mickey Gasper Summoned to majors
Sun, Aug 16, 2026, 10:21 AM
The Red Sox recalled Gasper from Triple-A Worcester on Sunday.
Analysis: Gasper will be back with the Red Sox for the first time since late June, replacing the injured Masataka Yoshida (hamstring). Adley Rutschman will occupy the designated hitter spot for Sunday's series finale in Pittsburgh, but Gasper could get some looks as the DH while Yoshida is out. During his time in the majors this season, Gasper has slashed .243/.305/.308 with no home runs or stolen bases, 11 runs and seven RBI across 119 plate appearances.
Justin Slaten
Justin Slaten Move to IL official
Sun, Aug 16, 2026, 10:19 AM
The Red Sox placed Slaten (elbow) on the 15-day injured list Sunday.
Analysis: Slaten's placement on the IL is retroactive to Thursday, so he'll be eligible to return as soon as Aug. 28 if he's fully recovered from right elbow inflammation by then. The Red Sox recalled left-hander Raymond Burgos from Triple-A Worcester to take Slaten's spot in the bullpen.
Raymond Burgos
Raymond Burgos Moves up from Triple-A
Sun, Aug 16, 2026, 10:17 AM
Boston recalled Burgos from Triple-A Worcester on Sunday.
Analysis: Burgos will join the big-league club for the second time this season, replacing the injured Justin Slaten (elbow) on the active roster. During his brief stint with Boston earlier this month, Burgos made a pair of relief appearances and gave up two earned runs while striking out four over six innings.
Masataka Yoshida
Masataka Yoshida Shelved with hamstring strain
Sun, Aug 16, 2026, 10:13 AM
The Red Sox placed Yoshida (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list Sunday due to a left hamstring strain.
Analysis: Boston recalled catcher/designated hitter Mickey Gasper from Triple-A Worcester as a replacement for Yoshida, who is likely to be shelved into September while he recovers from a left hamstring strain he sustained Saturday. Adley Rutschman will serve as Boston's designated hitter in Sunday's series finale, but interim manager Chad Tracy could elect to rotate in a number of players through the DH spot while Yoshida is on the mend.
Justin Slaten
Justin Slaten Heading to injured list
Sun, Aug 16, 2026, 9:46 AM
The Red Sox are expected to place Slaten on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to right elbow inflammation, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Slaten last pitched Wednesday against the Blue Jays, so his move to the IL will be retroactive to Thursday. Per Sean McAdam of MassLive.com, Slaten had been pitching through discomfort in his forearm/elbow for a period of time, and the Red Sox have decided that the righty reliever needed a chance to rest up and recover. The 28-year-old will make his second trip to the IL this season after missing a little over a month at the start of the campaign due to a right oblique strain.
Willson Contreras
Willson Contreras Sitting out Sunday
Sun, Aug 16, 2026, 9:08 AM
Contreras is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Following a 0-for-3 performance with a walk and two strikeouts in Saturday's 4-0 win, Contreras will ride the pine for the series finale. Nick Sogard will move over to first base in place of Contreras, who had started in each of the previous eight contests.
Masataka Yoshida
Masataka Yoshida Headed for IL
Sun, Aug 16, 2026, 8:33 AM
The Red Sox are expected to place Yoshida (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list prior to Sunday's game against the Pirates, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Boston intends to call up Mickey Gasper from Triple-A Worcester as a replacement for Yoshida, who strained his left hamstring while legging out a double during Saturday's 4-0 win. Per MLB.com, the Red Sox expect Yoshida to miss more than the minimum 10 days, with the 33-year-old unlikely to return until September. Gasper could be an option to take over Yoshida's role as the primary designated hitter against right-handed pitching, though interim manager Chad Tracy may prefer to rotate a number of different players in that lineup spot.
Masataka Yoshida
Masataka Yoshida Removed early from Saturday's game
Sat, Aug 15, 2026, 7:02 PM
Yoshida left Saturday's game early in the top of the third inning against the Pirates after sliding into second base on a double, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: The 33-year-old slid headfirst into second base after legging out a double and came up limping before being removed from the game in the third inning, exiting with left hamstring tightness, per Ian Browne of MLB.com. Anthony Seigler pinch-ran for Yoshida at second base and will remain in the game as Boston's designated hitter. If Yoshida is to miss time, Romy Gonzalez would be a potential replacement after logging a four-hit game Saturday with Triple-A Worcester.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa
Isiah Kiner-Falefa Cleared for rehab assignment
Sat, Aug 15, 2026, 5:11 PM
Kiner-Falefa (forearm) will start his rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Worcester, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Kiner-Falefa was diagnosed with a stress reaction of his left forearm in late June, prompting the Red Sox to place the veteran utility man on the injured list. He was cleared to begin a hitting progression shortly after the All-Star break, and Kiner-Falefa is ready to take the next step in his recovery program by embarking on a rehab assignment. It looks like the Red Sox are set to receive significant reinforcements for the final weeks of the regular season, as both Roman Anthony (finger) and Trevor Story (sports hernia) have also been cleared to start their respective rehab assignments.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Embarking on rehab assignment
Sat, Aug 15, 2026, 5:07 PM
Anthony (finger) will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Portland, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Anthony has been on the injured list since early May due to a sprained wrist and sprained finger, but he's hit all the benchmarks to be cleared for a rehab assignment. He may need a lengthy stint in the minors given his extended absence, but the Red Sox are inching closer to getting significant reinforcements for the final weeks of the regular season.
Trevor Story
Trevor Story Ready for rehab assignment
Sat, Aug 15, 2026, 5:04 PM
Story (sports hernia) will embark on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Story travelled to Worcester on Friday for a workout, and the veteran infielder has been given the green light to take the next step in his recovery program by starting a rehab assignment. He's been on the injured list since early June due to a sports hernia injury, and he may need a few minor-league outings under his belt before he's cleared to return to the Red Sox.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Will be evaluated next week
Sat, Aug 15, 2026, 9:22 AM
Anthony (finger) will undergo an evaluation following this weekend, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said Anthony is making significant progress with his hitting program and is "getting closer" to beginning a rehab assignment. "He's got a real good setup there in Fort Myers right now," Tracy said. "He's got everything he needs, and then we'll see how he does over the weekend and go from there." Anthony is hitting off the Trakjet machine and recently incorporated breaking balls.
Jake Bennett
Jake Bennett Struggles continue Friday
Sat, Aug 15, 2026, 9:01 AM
Bennett (7-6) took the loss Friday, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk over four innings as the Red Sox fell 8-4 to the Pirates. He struck out six.
Analysis: The rookie left-hander gave up a solo shot early to Rafael Flores, but the wheels really came off in the fourth when four of the first five Pittsburgh batters rattled hits off Bennett, including a two-run double by Esmerlyn Valdez. Bennett has been tagged for at least three runs in five straight trips to the mound, stumbling to a 5.67 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 23:8 K:BB in 27 innings over that stretch. He'll try to turn things around in his next start, which lines up to come at home next week against the Diamondbacks.
