Noah Murdock
Noah Murdock Designated for assignment
Fri, May 9, 2025, 4:09 PM
Murdock was designated for assignment by the Athletics on Friday, Jessica Kleinschmidt of Baseball America reports.
Analysis: The 26-year-old right-hander has been blasted to the tune of a 13.24 ERA and 2.71 WHIP across 17 innings out of the bullpen. Murdock was Rule 5 draft pick during the offseason, so he'll be offered back to the Royals if he passes through waivers unclaimed. With him removed from the 40-man roster, the Athletics recalled Elvis Alvarado from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move.
Jacob Wilson
Jacob Wilson Four more hits Wednesday
Thu, May 8, 2025, 8:49 AM
Wilson went 4-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 6-5 loss to the Mariners.
Analysis: Wilson has been on a tear at the plate, recording multiple hits in four of his last five games -- he's gone 12-for-21 (.571) with a 1.275 OPS in that span. The rookie shortstop has boosted his slash line to .357/.383/.476 across 150 plate appearances this season with three homers, 21 RBI, 20 runs scored and a stolen base.
Gunnar Hoglund
Gunnar Hoglund Solid in second outing
Wed, May 7, 2025, 7:09 PM
Hoglund did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Mariners, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out three.
Analysis: Hoglund was sharp early Wednesday, as he held Seattle scoreless through his first four innings. However, he'd allow a run in the fifth before walking two batters in the sixth, both of whom would come around to score against the A's bullpen. Despite the shaky finish, Hoglund's gotten off to a strong start in his big-league career, posting a 2.38 ERA with 10 strikeouts and just one walk through his first two starts (11.1 innings). The 25-year-old Hoglund certainly appears to have done enough to remain in the A's rotation -- he'd line up for a tough road matchup with the Dodgers in his next start.
Gio Urshela
Gio Urshela Losing out to Andujar at 3B
Wed, May 7, 2025, 12:17 PM
Urshela is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mariners.
Analysis: Urshela will hit the bench for the third game in a row and appears to have ceded primary duties at third base to Miguel Andujar, who was displaced in the corner outfield as part of the domino effect of first baseman Nick Kurtz's promotion to the big leagues. Though Urshela brings better defense to the table, Andujar has been one of the team's top hitters this season with a .786 OPS -- more than 150 points ahead of Urshela's mark (.621). Playing time will likely become even more difficult to come by for Urshela once Zack Gelof (wrist) comes off the injured list, as Gelof's return will result in Luis Urias moving off second base and vying for reps at the hot corner.
Miguel Andujar
Miguel Andujar Getting regular run at 3B
Wed, May 7, 2025, 12:11 PM
Andujar will start at third base and bat cleanup in Wednesday's game against the Mariners.
Analysis: Andujar broke into the big leagues as a third baseman with the Yankees in 2017, but he's seen most of his action in the corner outfield since the 2021 season. However, with the recent promotion of first baseman Nick Kurtz from Triple-A Sacramento having resulted in Tyler Soderstrom taking over as the Athletics' primary left fielder, Andujar has been seeing more time at third base of late as manager Mark Kotsay makes an effort to keep his bat in the lineup. Andujar will be making his fourth straight start and his third in a row at third base, where he's seemingly supplanted Gio Urshela as the primary option. Andujar could face more competition for reps at the hot corner from Luis Urias once Zack Gelof (wrist) returns from the injured list and takes over as the Athletics' primary second baseman.
Shea Langeliers
Shea Langeliers Sitting out matinee
Wed, May 7, 2025, 12:03 PM
Langeliers is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Mariners.
Analysis: Langeliers started at catcher in each of the first two games of the series, so he's earned a rest for Wednesday's matinee. Jhonny Pereda will do the catching and bat ninth for the Athletics in this one.
Nick Kurtz
Nick Kurtz Exiting starting nine
Wed, May 7, 2025, 12:00 PM
Kurtz is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Mariners.
Analysis: It's Kurtz's second day off since his promotion in late April and the first time he's been out of the lineup against a right-hander. The rookie has been better so far in May (.278/.417/.389, 7:5 K:BB) after a sluggish April (.250/.240/.250, 12:0 K:BB) but is still looking for his first major-league home run. Tyler Soderstrom is handling first base Wednesday for the Athletics while Seth Brown patrols left field.
Gunnar Hoglund
Gunnar Hoglund Remains in rotation
Tue, May 6, 2025, 9:07 AM
Hoglund is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Mariners in Sacramento.
Analysis: The 25-year-old righty will be awarded a second turn through the rotation following an excellent MLB debut this past Friday, when he limited the Marlins to one earned run on six hits and no walks while striking out seven over six innings en route to picking up the win. Oakland will likely have a spot in the rotation available for Hoglund as long as J.T. Ginn (elbow) remains on the injured list.
Brett Harris
Brett Harris On shelf at Triple-A
Mon, May 5, 2025, 8:01 PM
Triple-A Las Vegas placed Harris on its 7-day injured list April 18 due to an unspecified injury.
Analysis: Harris opened the season on the Athletics' 10-day injured list due to an oblique strain, but he was activated April 3 and optioned to Triple-A. Before succumbing to another injury, Harris was sizzling at the plate for Las Vegas, slashing .373/.459/.627 with three home runs and three stolen bases across 61 plate appearances.
Zack Gelof
Zack Gelof Pausing rehab stint
Mon, May 5, 2025, 6:11 PM
The team has paused Gelof's (wrist) rehab assignment after being diagnosed with a stress reaction in his ribs, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Gelof was sent out on a rehab stint with Triple-A Las Vegas that started Tuesday as he continues to work back from surgery on his right wrist, but he's now being bothered by his ribs. He'll be shut down from swinging a bat until he can get the stress reaction under control, likely pushing his 2025 debut to late May in a best-case scenario.
Gio Urshela
Gio Urshela Not in Monday's lineup
Mon, May 5, 2025, 5:23 PM
Urshela is not in the Athletics' starting lineup against the Mariners on Monday.
Analysis: Urshela will take a seat for Monday's series opener while Luis Urias and Miguel Andujar start at second and third base, respectively. Urshela has gone 11-for-34 (.324) with four RBI over his last 10 games.
Tyler Ferguson
Tyler Ferguson Earns first save
Sun, May 4, 2025, 3:30 PM
Ferguson earned the save in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Marlins, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning.
Analysis: After Mason Miller threw 28 pitches in a blown save Saturday, Ferguson got the call in the ninth inning Sunday, with the A's holding a one-run lead. The 31-year-old Ferguson made quick work of the Marlins, retiring the side on just 11 pitches, to pick up his first save this year. While Ferguson isn't likely to challenge Miller for the closing job, he's been excellent in a setup role this season, allowing just one earned run through his first 16.1 innings.
JP Sears
JP Sears Solid in no-decision
Sun, May 4, 2025, 3:20 PM
Sears did not factor into the decision Sunday against the Marlins, allowing two runs on four hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out two.
Analysis: Sears has held opponents to two runs or fewer in each of his last four starts -- he's gone 3-0 with a 1.95 ERA in that span (23 innings). Overall, the 29-year-old left-hander sports a 2.93 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP and an impressive 32:6 K:BB across seven starts (40 innings) to open the year. Sears will look to keep rolling in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week against the Yankees.
Tyler Soderstrom
Tyler Soderstrom Receiving first day off
Sun, May 4, 2025, 12:24 PM
Soderstrom is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins.
Analysis: Soderstrom will get his first day off of the season, in the midst of a rough patch at the dish. After slugging nine home runs in the Athletics' first 19 games, Soderstrom has gone without a long ball over the ensuing 15 contests and is slashing .228/.286/.281 with three doubles, one stolen base, six RBI and five runs during that stretch, a downturn that has coincided with a shift to the outfield to accommodate rookie Nick Kurtz. Soderstrom will give up his spot in the lineup Sunday to Miguel Andujar, who will start in left field and bat cleanup.
Shea Langeliers
Shea Langeliers Getting Sunday off
Sun, May 4, 2025, 9:32 AM
Langeliers is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins.
Analysis: Langeliers started the first two games of the series but will take a seat for the finale after going 0-for-9 with an RBI. Jhonny Pereda will step in behind the plate to catch for lefty JP Sears on Sunday.
Mason Miller
Mason Miller Implodes in first blown save
Sat, May 3, 2025, 11:14 PM
Miller (0-1) was charged with the loss and a blown save Saturday against the Marlins after surrendering five runs on two hits and two walks over two-thirds of an inning. He struck out two.
Analysis: The right-hander entered for the bottom of the ninth with a 6-4 advantage and struck out two of the first three batters he faced, but a double, two walks and a walk-off grand slam by Kyle Stowers resulted in a five-run frame for Miami. It's the first blown save of the season for Miller, who entered the day with just two runs allowed through 12 appearances. He's now 10-for-11 in save chances, with the rough performance ballooning his ERA to 4.97. A 0.95 WHIP and 25:4 K:BB are still a good indication of his standing as arguably the best closer in baseball.
Seth Brown
Seth Brown First multi-hit game this season
Fri, May 2, 2025, 11:18 PM
Brown went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base in Friday's 6-1 win over Miami.
Analysis: It was Brown's first extra-base hit and steal since April 24, when he also doubled a swiped a bag, and he submitted his first multi-hit game of the campaign. The outfielder's playing time has been sporadic -- Friday marked his first start in his last six appearances -- but he's been effective at the plate when given the opportunity. Over his last 10 outings, Brown is batting .333 (4-for-12) with one home run, two doubles, two RBI and four runs scored.
Gunnar Hoglund
Gunnar Hoglund Shines in major-league debut
Fri, May 2, 2025, 9:29 PM
Hoglund (1-0) earned the win Friday against Miami after allowing one run on six hits and no walks in six innings. He struck out seven.
Analysis: Making his major-league debut, the 2021 first-rounder mostly cruised through Miami's lineup. Dane Myers did take him deep for a solo homer to lead off the sixth inning, but the Athletics took a 6-0 lead in the fifth frame to give Hoglund plenty of run support. The right-hander produced a 2.43 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 30:7 K:BB over 29.2 innings at Triple-A Las Vegas this year, and he almost certainly earned another chance in the rotation with Friday's impressive performance. Hoglund's next turn lines up for next week in a tough test versus the Mariners, who rank fourth in the majors in home runs (48).
Lawrence Butler
Lawrence Butler Getting day off Friday
Fri, May 2, 2025, 2:11 PM
Butler is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Marlins.
Analysis: It's a routine day off for Butler, who is slashing .244/.316/.415 with five home runs, 11 RBI, 18 runs scored and five stolen bases across 136 plate appearances to begin the 2025 campaign. With Butler sitting, Seth Brown is getting the start in right field and batting sixth, while Jacob Wilson moves up to the leadoff spot.
Gunnar Hoglund
Gunnar Hoglund Recalled ahead of MLB debut
Fri, May 2, 2025, 1:09 PM
The Athletics recalled Hoglund from Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday.
Analysis: Hoglund is set to make his major-league debut Friday with a start against the Marlins. The 25-year-old right-hander boasts a 2.43 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 30:7 K:BB over 29.2 frames this season in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. Hoglund should have an opportunity to stick in the big-league rotation for the long haul if he pitches well.
