Andruw Monasterio
Andruw Monasterio Slides in at shortstop
Sun, May 17, 2026, 9:57 PM
Monasterio started at shortstop and went 1-for-4 in Sunday's 8-1 loss to Atlanta.
Analysis: Monasterio has made two consecutive starts at shortstop, as Trevor Story (groin) was added to the injured list and could face surgery. It's unclear if Monasterio will become the everyday fill-in at shortstop, but interim manager Chad Tracy put him in the starting lineup against right-handers Saturday and Sunday. Other than Monasterio, the Red Sox have a host of options on the 26-man roster that can play shortstop, including Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Nick Sogard and Marcelo Mayer.
Brayan Bello
Brayan Bello Jumped early in loss
Sun, May 17, 2026, 7:16 PM
Bello (2-5) took the loss against Atlanta on Sunday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and three walks with one strikeout over five innings.
Analysis: Bello allowed runs in four of his five innings pitched, including five across the game's first two frames. He generated just seven swinging strikes on 98 pitches and yielded 11 hard-hit balls in his first start since April 29 after two impressive performances in bulk relief to open May. The 27-year-old now owns an unsightly 7.16 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and 30:20 K:BB across 44 innings this season and lines up for a home matchup against the Twins next weekend, though it's currently unclear in what role that will be.
Carlos Narvaez
Carlos Narvaez X-rays negative on finger
Sun, May 17, 2026, 4:56 PM
Narvaez underwent X-rays on his finger, which came back negative, after Sunday's 8-1 loss to Atlanta, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Narvaez exited the game in the third inning after dealing with finger pain on his right hand, and he is now considered day-to-day. The 27-year-old was replaced in the contest by Connor Wong, who is likely the next man up behind the plate if Narvaez is forced to miss any action moving forward.
Carlos Narvaez
Carlos Narvaez Managing finger issue
Sun, May 17, 2026, 3:30 PM
Narvaez was removed from Sunday's game against Atlanta due to pain in the third finger on his right hand, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: It's unclear exactly how he sustained the injury, but Narvaez was replaced defensively for the bottom of the sixth inning after going 1-for-2 at the plate. Connor Wong (ankle), who has been dealing with his own injury, replaced Narvaez at catcher.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Expected to swing bat Monday
Sun, May 17, 2026, 11:20 AM
Anthony (wrist) is slated to starting swinging a bat by hitting flips Monday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: This is a big step for Anthony, as it will be his first time swinging a bat since landing on the IL with a right wrist injury in early May. The talented young outfielder will presumably still have several obstacles to clear -- including hitting off a machine and facing live pitching -- but he appears to at least be making progress in his recovery. A timeline for his return to the Red Sox should become clearer as he moves along in his hitting progression.
Caleb Durbin
Caleb Durbin Beginning on bench Sunday
Sun, May 17, 2026, 9:23 AM
Durbin is not in Boston's starting lineup Sunday versus Atlanta, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: Durbin will get a breather amidst a rough start to May, as he's batting just .150 through 14 games so far this month. Nick Sogard is starting at third base Sunday for the Red Sox.
Brayan Bello
Brayan Bello Starting Sunday vs. Atlanta
Sat, May 16, 2026, 8:40 PM
Bello will start in Sunday's series finale against Atlanta, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Bello has worked behind Jovani Moran in each of his last two outings, but Bello will be the starter for Sunday's contest, rather than operate in a bulk-relief role. He's pitched well in each of his last two appearances on the mound, allowing two runs and eight hits and two walks while striking out 12 across 13.1 innings.
Jedixson Paez
Jedixson Paez Dealing with hip soreness
Sat, May 16, 2026, 6:46 PM
Paez will not pitch for Double-A Portland on Saturday due to right hip soreness, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: It's unclear when Paez sustained the injury, but the Red Sox should have an update on a recovery timeline for the 22-year-old pitching prospect once he undergoes more tests on his right hip. He was roughed up in his last outing in Double-A this past Sunday, when he allowed three runs on four hits while striking out two across three innings.
Trevor Story
Trevor Story Seeking medical opinions
Sat, May 16, 2026, 3:26 PM
Story is seeking additional opinions about whether surgery is needed for his sports hernia, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Story was placed on the 10-day IL on Saturday due to the issue, which he's reportedly been dealing with for much of the season. The expected length of his absence should become clearer once it's determined whether or not he'll need to go under the knife. Story said Saturday that he'll likely be out 6-to-10 weeks if surgery is indeed required.
Trevor Story
Trevor Story Injury deemed sports hernia
Sat, May 16, 2026, 3:02 PM
Story, who was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday, has been diagnosed with a sports hernia, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Story was originally said to have a groin injury, so the sports hernia diagnosis provides more specificity to the issue he's reportedly been dealing with for much of the season. According to Bill Koch of the Providence Journal, a sports hernia can sideline a player six weeks if surgery isn't needed and for about four months if surgical, so Story appears to be facing an extended absence. Andruw Monasterio is starting at shortstop for Boson on Saturday and could pick up regular playing time there in Story's stead.
Carlos Narvaez
Carlos Narvaez Out of lineup Saturday
Sat, May 16, 2026, 2:12 PM
Narvaez isn't starting Saturday versus Atlanta.
Analysis: It's a routine day off for Narvaez, who started each of Boston's previous two games. Connor Wong (ankle) remains sidelined, so Mickey Gaspar is starting behind the plate for the Red Sox on Saturday.
Nick Sogard
Nick Sogard Recalled from Worcester
Sat, May 16, 2026, 11:16 AM
The Red Sox recalled Sogard from Triple-A Worcester on Saturday, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Sogard will come up from Triple-A to replenish Boston's infield depth following Trevor Story's (groin) move to the injured list. Sogard has spent the entire 2026 campaign in the minors up to this point, slashing .269/.417/.454 with five homers, 23 RBI, 27 runs scored and four steals across 168 plate appearances.
Trevor Story
Trevor Story Placed on injured list
Sat, May 16, 2026, 11:12 AM
The Red Sox placed Story on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a groin injury, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Story has reportedly been battling a groin issue for the majority of the season, and the Red Sox will now place him on the injured list so they can properly treat his injury. Andruw Monasterio and Isiah Kiner-Falefa will likely split reps at shortstop while Story is on the shelf, and Nick Sogard could factor into the mix as well after coming up from Triple-A Worcester.
Ceddanne Rafaela
Ceddanne Rafaela Aggressive on basepaths
Sat, May 16, 2026, 9:26 AM
Rafaela went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, a stolen base and was caught stealing in Friday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to Atlanta.
Analysis: Rafaela was one of three Red Sox players to be thrown out on the basepaths when he was caught attempting to steal third base after a leadoff double in the fifth inning. It appears being aggressive was a plan for interim manager Chad Tracy, who also watched Jarren Duran get picked off and Mickey Gasper gunned down by several steps while attempting to swipe second base. Rafaela, who stole 20 bases in 2025, now has three steals and has been caught four times. For a player that sits in the 90th percentile in sprint speed, Rafaela hasn't helped the Red Sox much when attempting to steal during his four MLB seasons; he has successfully stolen a base on 69.2 percent of his career attempts (45 of 65).
Marcelo Mayer
Marcelo Mayer Smacks game-tying homer Friday
Fri, May 15, 2026, 9:13 PM
Mayer went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run during the Red Sox's 3-2 extra-inning loss to Atlanta on Friday.
Analysis: Friday's contest was a low-scoring affair, and Meyer ended up tying things at 2-2 in the seventh inning after smacking a solo homer. It was his second home run of the season, with his first taking place April 3 against the Padres. Meyer has struggled at the plate as of late, but perhaps Friday's performance was a sign of things to come for the 23-year-old second baseman.
Connelly Early
Connelly Early No-decision against Atlanta
Fri, May 15, 2026, 9:10 PM
Early did not factor into Friday's decision against Atlanta. He allowed two runs on five hits while striking out six across five innings. He did not issue a walk.
Analysis: Both of the runs Early gave up came on solo home runs by Drake Baldwin and Michael Harris in the first and fourth frames, respectively. Early was solid outside of those two long balls, and he ended up avoiding the loss after his Red Sox teammates scored two runs across the sixth and seventh innings. The 24-year-old southpaw has a 3.21 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 45:18 K:BB across 47.2 innings this season, and he's slated to face the Royals on the road next week.
Danny Coulombe
Danny Coulombe Making rehab appearance Friday
Fri, May 15, 2026, 5:26 PM
Coulombe (neck) will begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Portland on Friday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Neck spasms sent Coulombe to the injured list toward the beginning of the month, and the Red Sox will now look to get the 36-year-old southpaw a tune-up outing in the minors before adding him back to their bullpen. He'll be eligible to return from the IL on Sunday, so there's a good chance that Friday's rehab appearance will be the only one he makes.
Roman Anthony
Roman Anthony Sheds brace, plays catch
Fri, May 15, 2026, 4:34 PM
Anthony (wrist) began playing catch Friday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Friday marks the first time that Anthony has taken off his brace and done any sort of activity since he landed on the injured list last week with a sprained right wrist, and he said afterward that he feels like he's "in a good spot." The Red Sox have yet to provide a return timeline for the young outfielder, though that may come whenever he is cleared to begin a hitting progression.
Masataka Yoshida
Masataka Yoshida Sitting against right-hander
Fri, May 15, 2026, 2:45 PM
Yoshida is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against Atlanta.
Analysis: Even with right-hander Spencer Strider on the mound, interim manager Chad Tracy is going with Mickey Gasper in the second spot in the lineup at designated hitter. Yoshida is 7-for-24 at the plate this month but has just one extra-base hit and zero RBI since April 19.
Ranger Suarez
Ranger Suarez Quick hook was precautionary
Fri, May 15, 2026, 7:34 AM
Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy's decision to pull Suarez in the sixth inning Thursday after 76 pitches was due to the left-hander "starting to fatigue" an inning earlier, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis: Suarez was cruising against the Phillies, his former team, before getting the hook after 5.1 scoreless frames. "Based on the fact that he hadn't thrown in 11, 12 days, it felt like that was the right time to cut it," Tracy added after the game. While Suarez was never told he was under a pitch count, the pitcher believed he would be held to around 75-80 pitches. He shouldn't have any restrictions for his next outing, which lines up to come on the road early next week in Kansas City.
