Overview
The Best Ball Cutline Championship will consist of multiple leagues each comprised of 10 teams/managers. This is an optimal scoring format, where an owner's best scoring lineup will automatically be used every week. Owners will not have to choose who to start or bench on their rosters. Cost of entry is $175.00 per team, and a $50 discount is issued for every third team.

Teams will draft 42 players online with online drafts being held throughout the off-season. FAAB will be run twice during the season, with no roster expansion. FAAB will run on the following dates:

Tuesday, April 9th:
Tuesday, June 4th:

The Best Ball Cutline Championship Playoffs
The top two teams in each league will advance to the Championship Tier, while the third place, fourth place and fifth place teams in each league go into the Wild Card Tier. All teams tied for fifth place in their respective leagues will advance to the Wild Card Tier.

The NFBC Cutline Championship has a regular season, which concludes just prior to the MLB All-Star Break on Monday, July 15, and a championship playoff which runs for 9+ weeks beginning in the week of the All-Star Break and ending in mid-September. Championship Rounds run from:
Round 1: July 18-Aug. 4
Round 2: Aug. 5-Aug. 25
Round 3: Aug. 26-Sept. 15

Round 1: (July 18 through Aug. 4) Each advancing team from the regular season will have their Round 1 total calculated by adding their weekly average point total from the season to their team totals from July 18 to Aug. 4. The shortened Thursday-Sunday July 18-21 schedule is considered a separate week of scoring for Round 1, followed by three full weeks. The Top 95 teams in the Championship Tier will advance to Round 2 in the Championship Tier. All other teams move into the Wild Card Tier. The top 5 teams from the Wild Card Tier move into the Championship Tier for Round 2, while the next 95 Wild Card teams also advance to Round 2 in the Wild Card Tier. All other teams in the Wild Card Tier are eliminated from the contest.

Round 2: (Aug. 5 through Aug 25) The Top 95 teams from Round 1 of the Championship Tier plus the top 5 Wild Card teams will advance to Round 2 in the Championship Tier, while the remaining teams from the Round 1 Championship Tier and the remaining Top 95 Wild Card teams will compete in Round 2 in the Wild Card Tier. Each team's Round 2 total is calculated by adding 25% of their Round 1 Total Score, to their team totals from Aug. 5 to Aug. 25. The Top 18 teams in the Championship Tier will advance to Round 3 in the Championship Tier, while all other teams in the Championship Tier will move into the Wild Card Tier. The Top 2 Wild Card teams will move up to the Championship Tier for the next round, putting 20 teams in the Championship Tier for Round 3. The Top 20 teams after removing the Top 2 teams in the Wild Card Tier move on to Round 3 in the Wild Card Tier. All other Wild Card teams are eliminated.

Round 3: (Aug. 26 through Sept. 15) The 20 teams left in the Championship Tier will compete for the 20 Championship Tier prizes. Each team's Round 3 total is calculated by adding 25% of their Round 2 Total Score to their team totals from Aug 26th to Sept. 15. The team with the most points in the Championship Tier wins the grand prize. The same scoring formula is used for the Wild Card Tier, which has prizes for the Top 5 highest scoring teams in Round 3.
Stats
Best Ball Cutline Championship scoring for the regular season of this contest is final as of Thursday, July 17 at 9 am ET. In the event that Elias or Major League Baseball make scoring changes after that of games played before the All-Star break, those changes won't be made in the Best Ball Cutline Championship. All scores for the regular season are final as of Thursday, July 17th at 9 am ET. Championship Round and Wild Card Tier scores are also final as of Monday, Sept. 16th at 6 pm ET.

Option 1: SLOW Draft
Drafts will take place online at playnfbc.com from November through March. Participants can enter as many Best Ball Cutline Championship leagues as they would like. Leagues form as they fill up and they start shortly after a league is full, unless they fill overnight. Then they will start at 8 am ET. Draft spots are announced via email and on the team pages shortly after the league fills.

Each league will be comprised of 10 teams, and each draft will consist of 42 rounds, with each team selecting a player from the AL or NL in each round in a serpentine fashion (team 1 through team 10 in odd-numbered rounds, team 10 through team 1 in even-numbered rounds) . This goes on for 42 rounds, with each team having a 2 or 4 hour time limit (depending what you choose) to make a pick.

Each team must start a weekly lineup of 23 players with required positions and maintain a reserve roster (which includes DL players) of 19 players. There is no position requirement necessary for your reserve roster. You also do not need to fill your 23 required starting positions with your first 23 picks; your No. 2 catcher could be selected with your 30th overall pick if you choose. Players will be selected from all 30 Major League Baseball rosters and any player from any MLB organization is eligible to be drafted.

If an NFBC participant inadvertently leaves the draft with an illegal lineup (for instance, was without a middle infielder or second catcher), then the NFBC will drop the last pick made by that team (or more picks if needed) and add the last player at that position on the NFBC's final Cheat Sheet on Draft Day to make that lineup legal. All lineups must be legal before the season starts and the NFBC will correct all roster errors that may have been missed at the draft. All decisions by the NFBC commissioner involving final rosters are official.

Random League/Draft Spot Selections: The Best Ball Cutline Championship Leagues go once they are filled. Once 10 teams are signed up, we will close that league, run the KDS for the participants shortly after the league fills, email the participants the draft order and begin the draft process that day. If a league fills after 10 PM ET that league will start at 8 AM ET the following day.

Time Limit for Draft: There will be either a 2 or 4 hour time limit (depending what you choose) for each owner to make his/her pick during each round of the Best Ball Cutline Championship League draft. If a participant does not make a selection in the allotted time, the computer will select the top player from that owner's Player queue and if no player is in the queue then the top available player from the player's default list will be selected. If a participant times out once, their team will be put on Auto Draft. A participant may toggle the auto draft feature off at any time. If there is a computer failure, an error made with a selection by an owner or any other type of technical malfunction, the draft moderator can stop the draft at any time and correct the error and then resume the draft. The NFBC reserves the right to allow the draft moderator to roll-back the draft if a technical error occurred, but if the desired player had already been selected before the draft was stopped, that player is no longer available to be drafted. Although there is a time limit, we expect owners to make picks in a timely fashion, to set players in their queue before they are on the clock and to keep drafts moving.

Please note: If a participant times out in a slow draft, their pick will not be replaced by the draft administrator. It is up to the participant to make their picks within the allotted time or have their queue set up if they cannot make their pick on time.

Pick Timers Cut in Half: In order to increase draft efficiency, once round 31 begins, the pick timer is cut in half for the remainder of the draft.

Overnight Pause: Drafts are paused overnight from 1 AM ET - 9 AM ET.

Commissioner Decisions: All decisions made by the NFBC commissioner are final. Tough decisions sometimes must be made about eligibility rules, lineups, etc., and NFBC participants must accept the unbiased ruling of the NFBC commissioner.
Option 2: EXPRESS Draft
Drafts will take place online at playnfbc.com from November through March. Participants can enter as many Best Ball Cutline Championship leagues as they would like. Leagues form as they fill up and they start at their scheduled draft time.

This goes on for 42 rounds, with each team having either a 55 second time limit to make a pick.

All decisions by the NFBC commissioner involving final rosters are official.

Random League/Draft Spot Selections: The Best Ball Cutline Championship Leagues start at their scheduled draft time. Once 15 teams are signed up, we will close that league, run the KDS for the participants shortly after the league fills, email the participants the draft order and prepares for the draft process.

Time Limit for Draft: There will be a 55 second time limit for each owner to make his/her pick during each round of the Best Ball Cutline Championship League draft. If a participant does not make a selection in the allotted time, the computer will select the top player from that owner's Player queue and if no player is in the queue then the top available player from the player's default list will be selected. Position Eligibility
The NFBC will use the following position eligibility rules in 2024:

a) Players who played at least 20 games at any position in 2023 will qualify at that position for the entire 2024 NFBC season. Players who play 10 games at a new position in 2024 will be eligible at that position after they have played there for the 10th time during the 2024 MLB regular season. Any player who missed all of the previous season to injury or retirement will qualify at the position he last was eligible for in the majors.

b) If a player did not appear in 20 games at any position, he qualifies at the one position he played most frequently the prior season in the majors. Designated Hitter is considered a position for these purposes (pinch-hitting is not). A player who only qualifies as a DH may only be assigned to the UT position. If a player's most games played at a position is less than 20 and tied among more than one position, the NFBC commissioner will assign eligibility at one position only based on prior year minor league games played.

c) Those players who only pinch-hit in the majors in 2023 will be position eligible according to their minor-league games played status in 2023. They would qualify at the position they played the most games in the minors.

d) Players who played all of 2023 in the minor leagues will be awarded position eligibility for the 2024 NFBC season based on the most games played at all levels in the minors for the previous year. NFBC will determine that one eligible position before Draft Day and that will determine that player's status for 2024 once he is called up to the majors. Those players who only pinch-hit or DH in the minors will only be UT-eligible.

e) In random cases, such as being injured or out all season, resulting in ZERO GAMES being played at any professional level, a player's position eligibility will default to what it was entering the previous season.

f) The NFBC commissioner will rule on player eligibility prior to the draft as he deems necessary. Those eligibility lists are final and will be available to all owners prior to Draft Day.
Lineup Submission
The Best Ball Cutline Championship has an optimal scoring format where your highest scoring player from each of the starting positions is scored at the end of each week. Owners do not have to set their starting lineups at all during the season. Live league scoring and overall standings will be run in real-time, but the final calculation for each week is done after all Sunday games are complete. Weeks run from Monday through Sunday.
Free Agents
Each team will have a free agent acquisition budget of $1,000, but there will be only two free agent periods during the regular season and none during the championship playoff. Free agency will run on the following nights:

FAAB 1: Tuesday April 9th
FAAB 2: Tuesday June 4th

The first free agent period will be during the first two weeks of play on Tuesday April 9th, followed by the last and only other FAAB period on Tuesday June 4th. The Cutline FAAB deadline is on Tuesday’s and those players acquired in FAAB still have their stats from Monday and Tuesday calculated into their new teams’ stats for that week. Players will be allowed to pick up as many free agents each time as they’d like. At no time can any team have more than the required number of players allowed on its roster.

Free agent pickups during the season will include players who are on major-league rosters at the time or players who were selected on Draft Day and later dropped. Even players who were originally selected on Draft Day, cut and then sent to the minors are eligible during the regular season FAAB bidding period as once they are a part of that league they continue to be part of the free agent listing. If the players were good enough to be selected on Draft Day, they are then good enough to remain in that league's free agent pool.

Any player who is not on a team roster within your league and is on a major league roster or once was on an NFBC team in your league is considered a free agent for that league. Even players on the MLB disabled list are eligible to be picked up during the FAAB bidding process. The player pool is deemed closed of new free agents each Sunday at 7 AM ET before the FAAB bidding deadline and a player must have played at least 1 MLB game to be added to the pool at that time. Once a minor-leaguer plays his first game in the majors, he remains in every NFBC FAAB pool whether he returns to the minors or not. Once in the majors, he remains in all FAAB pools. Participants should also note that MLB unsigned veteran free agents at the time of Draft Day are eligible to be drafted in all NFBC leagues. However, after Draft Day they can only be added via free agency once they are added to an MLB 26-man roster.

Free Agent Bidding Process: The free agent system will be a blind bidding process for each individual league. Each team will start with 1,000 free agent dollars for the season, and will be permitted to bid for free agents two times per year with a minimum bid of $1 per player. Teams will not be able to see other team's free agent bids. The team with the highest bid on any given player will be awarded that player. The amount of the winning bid will be deducted from the winning team's free agent dollars. For each winning bid, the winning team must drop a player to make roster room for the free agent acquisition. If a team's free agent dollars go to zero, that team will no longer be allowed to bid for the rest of the season. No bid will be accepted that is larger than a team's available free agent dollars. All bids must be in increments of dollars (no cents). Only winning bids and the runner-up bids on each player will be shown after the FAAB bidding period for each NFBC league.

Bidding Time Frame: The NFBC bidding process starts the week before Opening Day and runs for the first time on Tuesday April 9. FAAB will run one more time on Tuesday June 4. There are no additional FAAB pickups in the playoffs. Bids will be accepted on the league website from Tuesday at 3 PM ET until the day of the deadline at 10 PM ET in each of those weeks. Rosters will be updated shortly after 10 PM ET on Tuesday with the results of all successful bids. First and Last Free Agent Bidding Deadlines: The first free agent bidding deadline is Tuesday April 9, at 10 PM ET. The last free agent bidding deadline is on Tuesday June 4 at 10 pm ET.

Conditional Bids: Conditional bids can also be offered. In the event you may lose out on a player, you can place conditional bid(s) for other players during the bidding time frame. Subsequent conditional bids will become relevant only if the previous conditional bid fails. Bids do not require conditional bids. Bids may have several sequential conditional bids. Participants should note that the computer takes the HIGHEST BIDS and processes each bid in that order if you have multiple FAAB acquisition bids. ALL BIDS WILL BE PROCESSED IN THE ORDER OF DOLLAR VALUE ASSIGNED TO THOSE FREE AGENTS, highest to lowest.

Example:

Acquire Willie Calhoun, $19, cut Jorge Soler
Acquire Eloy Jimenez, $16, cut Jorge Soler
Acquire Nick Gordon, $2, cut Jorge Soler

Number of Bids Limit: There is no limit to the number of bids that may be submitted each week in which bids are permitted.

Tied Bids: If there is a tie bid during the season, the team that receives the player will be determined in order by

Worst league standing at the time FAAB was run (Tuesday night using Monday's standings).
Lowest standing the previous week.
Lowest draft position from Draft Day.

Commissioner Review of Player Drops: All player drops for free agents are subject to review by the NFBC commissioner and can be revoked if the dropped player is deemed too valuable to be offered to that league's free agent pool, thus damaging the credibility of the overall contest. In the case of a star player being dropped in a league for a valid reason, the NFBC commissioner reserves the right to allow the cut but keep the player out of that league's free agent pool for any length of time, possibly the entire season. All decisions by the NFBC commissioner will be final.

Overview
The Best Ball Cutline Championship is a points-based league designed to approximate the relative contribution value of batter and pitcher outcomes in standard NFBC rotisserie leagues.

A starting lineup will consist of 14 hitters and 9 pitchers, with the same positions and position eligibility of standard NFBC leagues. Scoring is automatic, with each teams highest scoring lineup of 2 catchers, 1 first baseman, 1 second baseman, 1 third baseman, 1 shortstop, 1 middle infielder (2B or SS), 1 corner infielder (1B or 3B), 5 Outfielders, 1 Utility Hitter and 9 pitchers counting toward that teams points.

Every team's optimal scoring lineup will be automatically scored each week (Monday through Sunday) from the required 42 starting positions.
